Statement of Thomas. C. Bradley. of the United States Police Force Memphis Tenn:- My name is Thomas. C. Bradley I am and have been since March 19" 1863 been a member of the U.S Police Force. at Memphis Tenn:- I was appointed by Col. W. [illegible] Then Provost Marshal General, Dept of the Tenn:- who appointed me by orders from Maj Gen U.S Grant commanding "Dept of the Tennessee." On or about the 4" of April 1864 I received orders in writing from Geo: A Williams. Capt 1st U.S Inft and Provost Marshal Dist of Memphis to go to Chicago. to sell a certain amount of Specie consisting of gold and silver at such premium as it was then and there commanding In pursuance of said Orders. I left Memphis on the night of the 4" of April 1864 and arrived at Chicago on the night of the 6" of April 1864.- and on the 7" of April sold the gold to Boyd and Co. No. 38′ Clark Street _ and received in return for said gold $9015 43/100 (Nine thousand. fifteen dollars. and forty three cents ... On the Tuesday night follow ing. (Apr. 12") I left chicago _ and arrived in Cairo Ill’s on Wednes -day afternoon. found the river blockaded – and no boats leaving in consequence of news from Fort Pillow – I went on board the Steamer Constitution and deposited the money in the safe of the said Steamer _ and remained until Friday – at which time I heard that the gunboat New National – was coming down the river. I applied to Cap’t Pennock Commanding Navel Station at Cairo for permission to come down on said boat -. He. Pennock. informed it was contrary to his orders unless I got a request from Gen Brayman Commanding Post at Cairo _ I then went to Gen Brayman – and told him who I was. and showed him my orders – and what I wanted _ He declined making the request on Capt Pennock _ I then waited until Saturday. the next day. when the Steamer Constitution got orders to leave _ As the boat was on the point of leaving I was arrested. by a man representing himself as Chief of Police, taken to the Guard house and searched and every thing. papers, orders & etc – taken from me – in about half an hour I was taken to the Police office. where I saw Capt [illegible] and Capt Talmadge Dist. and Local Provost Marshalls they refused to answer any questions, regarding my arrest. nor did they ask me any questions and refused me permission to write or communicate with any one _ I was then sent back to the Guard House. and kept in confinement until Monday following. at 4 oclock P.M. when I was again taken to the Police office. no questions asked nor answered – but was allowed to write. and send the letters to their office and if the letters suited them they would let them go if not they would keep them. I was sent back to the Guard House and kept there until Friday night I was then released without any trial or examination. taken to the Police office were all my things were given back to me with the exception of a pistol.. I then went with Capt Talmadge – to Gen Brayman’s Hd [Qurs.?] where the package of money that I had left on the Constitution was returned to me. All my personal baggage was left on the boat = I requested the officer who arrested me to look after it = and he said he would I have never heard or seen anything of said articles since Thomas C Bradley [U.
