Department of Tennessee District of Memphis. ss. I T. Williamson being first duly sworn deposes and says I am a loyal citizen of the United States of America and reside in Cincinnati Ohio . In the year 1861 I was owner of the stern wheel Steamboat W A Healy which was then new and in an unfinished condition at Cincinnati my boat was taken possession of in the fall of the year 1861by John A Duble who at that time was in command of a fleet on the Ohio River. The boat was taken for the use of the United States and used some fifty days in that capacity when Duble discharged my Steamboat for the United States. Service and made a voucher for the use of said Steamer at the rate of One hundred and fifty dollars per day for the time said Steamboat has been used and told the Captain A.Q. Ross that he (the Captain) must give him out of the allowance of One Hundred and fifty dollars per day the sum of Twenty five dollars for each day. The Captain of the boat being unable to get the pay for the boats Services without acceding to this arrangement agreed to it and Duble [made?] out the vouchers at the rate of One hundred and fifty dollars per day and paid over to Captain Ross the money received on said Voucher. deducting therefrom Twelve hundred and fifty dollars being the twenty five dollars per day above referred to. Capt. Ross came to me and informed me of the transaction and I went to Duble to see about the matter and he admitted to me the facts of the case as herein set forth and said he had acted dishonestly and would refund the money he said he did not then have any money as he had spent the money received in this transaction but would pay it in March then next following this occurred about January. 1862 I never again saw Capt Duble until the 13th of January 1863 when I again met him and he said he had no money but gave me a note for the money which is as follows to wit: “Cincinnati Jany 13th 1863 “Sixty Days. after date I promise to pay I T. “Williamson on order Twelve hundred and fifty “dolls for value received [written diagonally] [liquid?] “$1250 Ino A Duble I have never sen Duble since and the money has never been paid to me nor any part thereof Subscribed and Sworn to before me this 24th day of March I.T.
