May 20/63 Small Pox Hospital Rev Sir: ing Pardon me this address^ you but it is imperitave at Present as it was the last request of you dying Son that I should write you and let you Know what he Suffered the 10th Inst at 2 oclock A.M. he asked me if I would get the Chaplin I told him yes he Said he would die he asked me where he would be berried I told him at Pray for him home in Pa. he asked me if I would^ he asked me if I would take him home I said yes he said that was all he asked. at 4 olock I sent for the Chaplin of in 13th N.. Hampshire he was camped with^ 600 yards he said let him die he did not want to infect his Regt I send for the Chaplin 11th Pa Cav he come Dr. Harlow they brought nourishment change of dress the minister found that he was well aware that he had a merciful god to meet he Prayed for him and not him alone but for his Parents that god would Support them in [illegible in original] that same day after Sundown he Come back and Brought shirts & drawers milk & eggs jelley every thing for his comfort he attended every day Amos said he was a good man his Father would Respect him he died 13th at 10 minutes to 2 oclock he died easey he had no Pain the last half houre he said he would a like to Sleep he could not let my hand go he turned his head on the Pillow he held my hand shook it hard and mett his god in Mercies She told me he was Robed of his 20 dollars in washeton he had onley 10 cents he gave me Ring & Pocket Book I gave the Ring to the Chaplin the Pocket Book I will Keep I might see some of his Friends he is Buried on the Bank of Nansmond River I viset his grave he is always in my mind all honer in due the Chaplin of 11th Pa.
