Wilkin Chaplin Chaplain 11th Pa. Cavl. and my Regt went to Black water after Rebels and the letter was Returned to me through P.O. I wrote on the 20th Inst which I hope has Reached you ere. This your Beloved Son A.W. Thomas came here Apirl 26th he was Verry Sick the eruption was all over his Body his Throat was verry sore I applied a solution Prescribed d by the Dr. Reed who had charge of the Hospital I fixe^ a bead for him I give him some warm Tea he said he was slept me better he^ to 11 oclock he told^ he would like me to lie down was Robbed in Washontont the house he Stopt at they took about $20..00 from him he said he would not like his Father or Mother or his Brother [then?] Dr would Know it would [vesc?] them he said he got sick coming to [Fortess?] Monroe they Put him on duty it Rained that night he slept on the ground he said he was verry sick in the morning when he came to to his Regt he was sent to their own Hospital under care Dr Harlow James Doherty [N.B.?] he stopd their to the eruption small Pox Broke out well in Respect o fyour Questions the were two men Edward Finnagan 11th R..I.. vol Lanso Andrews 118th N..Y.. vol a feiw days after peter A.. Chandlen & Westley. J. [illegible] 1st Delaware Battery 1.. Dr Reid phila. had charge of the Hospital he was one Surg. D.W. Hand.. M.D staff he come mostly twice day Dr Harlow verified a long with him Reid stops at Head quarters in Suffolk Dr Baker Relieved Reid 3 days before your son died he has charge Mt. Rose Hospital and this as a Branch he attended to day to 60 Sick & wounded Soldiers Dr Harlow Sent aman name Schully to help me he was worthless he drank the medicine and went to Sleep Amos him wakened me and told me I never Allowed ^ in the Room after he Received two letters, here but no money his Papers & Satchel is in care of the Capt. Hospital in Care Dr harlow I will find out through the Chaplin Regt and write you he brought nothing here but his Blanketts Plate & cup the night he come he give me his Pocket Book containing 1 Bone Ring 1 ten cents & [Key?] of his Carpet sack the Ring & [Key?] I gave to the Rev J.M. D. he come back at dark he Brought him shirts and drawers jelley milk eggs oranges in fact every thing to comfort him sheets towels Pillow slips [illegible in original] - Dr. W Hand M.D. come here to see him the were nothing neglected that could be done 14th Inst after 9 oclock he said he would like to sleep at 10 oclock he asked did I see [illegible strikeout] Ruby he said he saw jesus he saw the baby the second time he said he was going to heaven he told me to tell you not to Lamet at 11 oclock a bile Broke in his throat the Run Blood and matter out of his mouth he got Better he said he would like to sleep he told me to eash him and stay with him he had no Pain the last two howers he asked me to sit beside him in the bed he asked my hand at 1 oclock he said he did not see [me?] he asked me to write you he said god Bless you & Moth[er?] & Brother & all his Friends he Kissed my hand and reviewed the Promise concerning his Burial at 10 minutes to 2 oclock he Brathed met his last and^ his god in Mercy he is Buried on the Fare well Bank Nansmond River & yours truley Rev J.W.
