[Written on Envelope-Margin] Letter from Chaplain [Written on Envelope-Front] Rev. B.H. Thomas Reidsburg Clarion Co. Pa. Rev. B.H. Thomas. Dear Broth. Yours of 22nd inst. with letter to nurse in Hospital was received yesterday. He sent the enclosed with note just before yours was re- ceived. I sent your note to him in afternoon. I am afraid his note will make you feel sad. I hope what he says will not prejudice you against Chaplain at this Post. You know as it was in a regiment to which they did not belong it was natural they should hesitate to visit the hospital least they may be censur- ed by some in their own regiments It is a pleasure for me to answer all your questions . Do not think it trouble. There was one other case not quite so bad as your son's. Two or three others were convalescent. There was no res- ident physician but one detailed to at- tend to it in connection with another be- longing to a battery. Dr. Harlan our surgeon also attended him. I will as- certain the name and have it sent you. Three or four times I was with him. The distance to the hospital is such that with [Written Along Margin] The nurse never said anything to me about the $20 of which he spoke. I suppose it is so. I.A.W my other duties particularly as our Col. was lying at point of death, rendered it impossible for me to see him oftener. Yes! my dear broth. he spoke of his home very often, and as was natural long for it. I think he was fully prepared for heaven. He enjoyed my prayers & took in, as it were, all that an earnest soul could possess. I do not think your son needed any thing. or was neglected or he would have inti- mated it to me in some way. His nurse is a as faithful soul as I have ever seen. Each time I left your son, I cautioned him over & over to do all for Amos that a brother could do, and I believe he did. I was not with him when he died but the nurse speaks of his last words Write as often as you desire I am a Presbyterian Clergyman belonging to 4th Prsby. Philada. My residence is Belvidere N. Jersey. I am the proprietor and principal of a large Young Ladies Seminar there. Respectfully your brother in Christ J. Addison Whit-a-ker May 29th/63 Chap. 11th Pa. vol. cav. The leaf is from the tree near Camp Suffolk Va. Amos' grave. The nurse has just sent me the inclosed. You must make some allowances. I think for what he says. He is a stran- ger to me: but I have seen so much of [tricked?] soldiers that I suspect he may say much to enlist himself in your sym- pathies. In haste. Ever yours etc J.
