Please find enclosed trans. for Mr. Thomas from New York to Suffolk and refund to Kittaning with what remains. If Mr. Thomas does not recover the remains he should only certify of having received trans. for himself Respectfully Your Old Servt. [illegible in original] Chief of Trans & [illegible in original] Dear Son Enclosed you will find a map of the place where the remains repose _ (See letter #4 from JA Whitaker to BH Thomas June 4 1863) On the bank of the Nansemond river, on the farm of Rev Mr Riddick which is about 3 Miles from Suffolk _ The grave is about ½ mile from the farm house _ which was burnt down _ Any one in Suffolk can tell where This farm is _ One one Side of the Swamp is a large pine _ on the other a large Holly _ between the Holly and the Swamp is the grave. I said this farm house is bur nt down _ but you can find some traces of when it stood and then you can easily find the grave by the map get a plain Cheep rough close jointed box made of ¾ in boards _ and let the coffin of it is Sound remain undisturbed _ You must Keep very quiet about his dieing with Small pox or you may have trouble to get transportation _ Say not a word about this [illegible in original] _ and if you think there is any danger whatever do not touch the remains Rev Riddick that has Sold the farm and gon South The distance by rail road from Norfolk to Suffolk is about 20 miles. Could you not take the “Sea Board Rail road” to when the Sage Road from Norfolk to Suffolk crosses it and get off then and take the road directly to the farm _ as marked down in the map _ which you Should Studdy closely- If you buy any clothing perhapse you had better not buy until you are returning home –at Bal- timore - when you get ready to Start if you get the remains push through as fast as possible Write and let me know when to meet at Rittanning _ If any thing will occur telegraph from Rittanning to Clarion _ [illegible strikeout] Reid & Patrick and I will get them to Send telegram down if Such Should come ___ Any Money we must meet adv ance for transportation to or from remains will bee refunded by the State _ go as Sving as you can I know you will As Ever BH Thomas
