Duvalls Bluff Ark. May 1st 1864 Dear folks at home. I received a letter this morning. dated April 23, It is a pleasent day. I am on camp guard to day my health is better but yet I have to be very carefull of myself. In the night I cheat Uncle Sam. by taking my cartridge box off and letting the ground support my gun all I can, it comes hard enough even then. Yesterday we had general inspection. [illegible in original] had to put on our whole rig throughout, which was quite heavy, The gGeneral for his own amusement marched us out on to the prairie, and maneuvered us around awhile through the water and mud then we came back and waited 3 or 4 hours him for the Gen to inspect each man seperately They keep us pretty busy, Battallion drill evry afternoon. Fatigue comes hard for me, to use a shovel all day is not exactly what I was cut out for. but it is soldiering and I shall get along as well as [Written upside down on top of Scn 2] I just cleaned a watch got $1.50 for it Fred P. Warren I can. Ed inquired how much money I have got thinking that perhaps I was out. I have about $15. on hand yet. I eat bread and butter. and some kind of sauce. butter costs from 60 cts to $1.00 per lb. dried apples I get for 35 cts. I have cleaned two watches since I have been here. I buy a paper wonce in while. 15 cts each We get papers 3 days old. Mail comes regular twice a week. you letters are about a week coming. the Sci. America and Journal. come regular also the other papers. they are a good deal of company Our Shanty looks so rough and dirty. that I pick a bouquet of flowers. and put into an old fruit can. to have something pretty to look at. Perry went to the hsopital yesterday with the measles he will have them light the Finch boys are doing well. Albert Hogan. who was once 1st Lieu in our en com, but released to the ranks for drunk^ness was shot night before last and mortally wounded trying to break into a negro shanty. Fred
