1865 Duvalls Bluff Ark. Apr 15 Dear Brother Albert I have been sick with the camp diarhea. but am getting better now, I am subject to duty [illegible in original], but our orderly. (James Hunt. of Hollbrooks school district) is very kind, and has not put me on for two days. I feel a good deal as a persons leg does when it gets to sleep. I do dont like to stir. Soldiering in camp is a lazy life, when off duty, Our duty is of three kinds Picketing. Show duty. and fatigue, There is a picket line around us from one to 3 miles away, we go out at 7 oclock in the morning. taking one days rations a rubber and [illegible in original] blanket We are two houres on and four houres off, being relieved the next morning we come to camp and have that day to ourselves. The 3d day we are generally put on [Provo?], that is guarding quarter master's stores. Public buildings Guard house etc. We are two houres on and four houres off. for 24 houres. We have to have our boots blacked our clothes brushed. our brasses and guns bright for this duty. Fatigue consists of working on roads, [illegible in original] forts, cleaning up generally. we go on at 7.o,cl work till 12. go on at one and work, till 5 I shall get enough of soldiering while I am in the army to last me during life [Written on the left side and top of Scan 2] You need not send this to albert as i intended I will write [illegible in original] ink FPW
