May the 5th 1865 Athins State of Georga Dear father now having an oportunity to write to you I will improve the time and inform you that I am well and hope these fiew lines will find you the same we are still on the march and whear we are going to now is more that I can tell but I think to Missipi the report is hear now that Lee and Johnson has surendered all the states and this part of the country east of the chaladocha river to out forces and the report is that General lee is killed but probly you have heard all this before now I have passed through some considerable of country since we started on this saw some very nice country and som very rough country I passed buy the bald mountain the highest peak in the blue rain and was prety near [Written upside down at the top of letter] Mr Webster Teachout Co L 11 Michigan Cavelry Knoxville Tenna [End] the top of it I had a view of a very nice landscape it was worth North seeing that was in ^ south carolina then we passed through into South Carlina and their we came to a mountain called Seayor head their we had still nicer landscape than before we could see just as far as our nicked Eye would let us right over the rest of the mountains and valies oh it was a splendid sight the nicest thing I ever saw then we passed on through South Carolina so on into Georga this is more of a levil state that part whear I have ben their corn and eaten is just up nice and all the gardings are nice as can bee gardin sauce and things are plenty hear w now I picked all the ripe sta^buries and ait the first day of may that I could eat that is sonthing that I never done before corn has ben high enough to cultivate for the past weak or ten days we are having very fine weather hear now and very warm and dry so it makes it very dusty traveling Old General Lear and Johnsons army is disbandered and sent home they come scattering through our lines evry day they dont pay no more tention to them them they do so many hags tell them to go home and stay their and take care of their farms and families and they say that they will and never will fight us again they have disbandened all their forces but those in Missipi and they had better do it their I dont know wheather we are going to go to Missipi now or whear some thinks that we are going to Chatanuga from hear and some thinks not for my part I dont care if they will fetel my male to me and give me a chance to send some back I keep just as fat as ever and weigh 182 pou nds all the rest of the Rome boys are well and fat as cubs all in good spirits thinks rebbion is plaid all the disbadndened men sais that it is all through with I keep the same horse I started with he is the only one that is in our count company now all the rest has plad out and is left I have ben of from the comand three and four dais at a time hunting horses with him run and gaded him around enough to kill half a dozen but he is prety well plaid now but I haint afraid of being dismounted for the boys steal from fifty to a hundread horses a day and fetch into the comand and them that has poor horses takes them keep up good spirit if you dont hear from me in a good while again for I dont know how long before you will hear from me again I will rite just as soon as I can the chance I have now in buy a conductor of the railroad which runs to this place he sais that he is going some whear in our reckalect lines with a flag of tince I dont no^ whear but he said he could cary mail if I wanted to rite I remain as ever you son W Teachout [Written on left side of letter] Direct as before Knoxville Tenn [End]
