Lexington Ky January 4th 1865 Dear father now just having returned of from a raid I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am all right and tough as ever we have had a very hard raid and accomplished a great deal we have swept evry thing that was before us we got the salt this time and gave the rebs the pepper before they give us the pepper and kept the salt we took the salt works with only half days fighting and it took us one day and a half to brake and to destroy the place we broke most three thousand bottles up so they could not use them again and we burnt the buildings and filled up the wells and tore up evry thing that [that] we could find we tore up about to hundread milds of rail road and burnt eight locomotives and trains all laded with sonthing some with provisions some with amunitions some with arms some with salt and all other things clothing with the rest evy quantity of it we took a place called arlington one called bristal one call Marion we had a day and a half fighting at mayrien and some prety hard fight ting the money that you Sent me is all right and came the handiest of eny thing that I could have had for I had my satch -el stole and evry thing in it while I was on the raid all of those clothes that you sent me was stole except one pair Socks and one Shirt the rest was stole I had one pair of these gloves with me the other pair was stole the buxkin gloves was the ones that was stole the one took them is the one that we left in charge of the company while we was gon all the satchels and trunks but the caps was broke open and the things taken out and sold for what ever he could get for them after we had ben gon three weaks he with some others was sent to folow the regiment and went to a place called crab orch -ard and was ordered to stop their and they are their now when they come back to camp he will git a trial and probly it will send him an the forttifications for Six month or more at hard labor diging and throwing up forts and such like Wright as Soon as you receive this I remain as ever your Son Webster Teachout
