Mt Sturling Ky January 24th 1865 Dear father now having a fiew leasure moments I thought I would answer your letter it found me well and hope that this will find you the same we still stay at mount Sturling and the prospect is that our company will Stay hear all the rest of the winter our company has mooved up to the fort to support the battery some of the companies has mooved to a place called Fleming burg and some to a [Written upside down at top of letter] we got to months pay the 1 [?] day of this month I have used most of it geting things that I wanted I shal not send eny thing home [End] place called Owens ville they are sending the companies round so as to Scout the country they are gurilies Scouting all around us and robing the country of horses all they can find you wanted to now wheather I went into the battles or the last raid I was in evry battle and on all the Skirmish lines that was formed while I was gon I was in a prety tight place for forghty hours the rebs was on thre sides of us we was in a brige holding it So the rebs could not get it and burn it the rebs would d Shout and the balls woul^ would go whisling over our heads and their was three or 4 Shot and to killed and to wounded it was a kind of a tickelish pla- ce and they would not let us Shoot a shot for they did not want [us] them to no how strong we was in the bridge for if they had known it they would shelled the bridge all to pieces but I came out all sound right and tight Mother when they send that box pleas bake to or three chickens and put it in the box Father you had better come down hear if yoy can and see the company and country for it will pay you to see the country if it dont to see the company which we have down hear if you are a country wright and let me know and if the you haint let me know the horses what went on the raid their a was out of eight hundre^d their was not over 200 come back I dont believe We dont hear nothing more about William Hood nor George Ayers we cant get no track of them after we left them at that fire I dont think of eny thing more at present I remain as ever your friend and son W Teachout [Written on right side of letter] & Wilaeme Teachout [End]
