It is Poa seed.. .but is it annua, or Merion? In May, bluegrasses make seed, and two of the grasses widely found on golf courses are Merion bluegrass and annual (Poa annua) bluegrass...the former is a desirable turfgrass and the latter is "that good looking weedy pest" that plagues the northern courses. It is a widely known fact that Poa cnnua seeds profusely in Spring under any height of cut...it is not such common knowledge that Merion bluegrass also produces seed under low heights of cut. Merion bluegrass does produce a seedhead somewhat like annua, being a member of the Poa family, but close inspection of blade and seedhead will tell the story...it isn't all Poa annua just because it produces seedheads under close mowing® Headway reported in the selective chemical control of pearlwort - At the Cornell Conference this year, Dr. Jack Harper, Extension Agronomist of the Pennsylvania State University reported on a selective control of pearlwort in putting green turf with the use of Endothal...and this being the first herbicide that we heard of providing successful selective control of this pernicious weed, we requested full particulars which herewith are supplied by way of Dr. Harper's letter with his permission... "Regarding the use of Endothal for the control of pearlwort, Joe Duich has found on the University plots that there is a wide range of difference in susceptibility of various bentgrasses to injury from Endothal. With this in mind, and in many cases the superin- tendent not being completely sure as to what species of grass he has on his greens, we have suggested that the following program be followed where Endothal is to be used for pearlwort control. 1. The material should be applied at a rate of one-quarter pound of actual ingredient per acre, preferably under Pennsylvania conditions at approximately the middle of May. Air temperatures should not exceed 75> degrees Fahrenheit. 2. As with any other herbicide, it should be applied when the green has adequate soil moisture. Discoloration even on the less susceptible strains of bentgrass may last for 3 to 7 days but seldom any longer. Discoloration on the more susceptible strains often persist for as long as 10 days. A ,j> "3. Seldom will one application be sufficient to completely control the pearlwort. In areas where cool temperatures persist into June, it is suggested that a second application be applied approx- imately three weeks after the first application. Where climatic conditions get quite warm by this time, it is suggested that two additional applications be made in the fall, one in early fall and one in mid fall* km After the first application has been made at the rate of one-quarter pound of actual ingredient per acre, it is suggested that if there is little or no apparent damage to the desirable grass the rate can then be doubled to one-half pound of actual ingredient per acre for subsequent treatments. This increased rate is to be used only on those bentgrasses which show high tolerance to the material. At Rolling Rock Country Club where Endothal is being used quite successfully, they have followed a program of one application spring and fall annually." Dr. Harper above stresses the need for extreme caution in the use of Endothal ...and he asked that we especially point this up to our readers...so use this herbicide carefully, it is a potent chemical, and try it on a small scale first if you have a pearlwort problem...do not under any circumstances exceed the rates suggested above. * * * * Support National Golf Week - May 29 through June 6 FIELD DAYS Rutgers Universi*tyNew Brunswick, N.
