To determine the rate of calcium and pnOSphorus storage in children of different ages, the subjects received a fixed diet contain- ing 750 grams of milk and supplying an average of 1.12 grams of phosphorus per child per day. The retentions of phosphorus varied from 0.09 to 0.53 gram, increasing with the age and size of the Child. the average phosphorus retention for the preschool group as shown in Table l. was 0.008 gram per kil- ogram of body weight. The authors determined the daily allowance of phosphorus which would secure optimal retention by giving three children, 5,5 and 12 years of age a fixed diet to wnich they added milk at five different levels, 250, 500, 750, 1000 and 1500 grams. Although the differences in retention were hrveeivuwi“ 31p3i— gible, the results seemed to indicate that optimal retention of phosphorus occurred when the diet contained from 750 to 1000 grams of milk.
