Importance of Dean Production in Hichignn. q The Promi ' of white pee. beans 11113 0800110 one of I.Zicl1ij;an1's (0 leading industries. Over the five year I1e1iod, 1925-192 , this croy has been worth 17 million dollars annually to the rro;e‘s. 2) Heny factors have contributed to the develogient of this industry. Zea beans are ed pted to Licnio1n's climate end fit well into its diversified QHricultural grogrem. The improvement in £1n;11mecliine y has made it possible to greatly increase the acreage and also reduce the cost of groduction. ine introduction of the Robust variety, egr t11e Iichi'011n3x11erii1ent Station, offered a greater profit on beans than that obtained from lower yielding varieties. However, be- cause of personal plstanCCS, seie farmers continue to grow their old varieties because they believe that their variety gives a better stand, matures earlier, has a c’11elkier seed coat, a lsr er vine, nicks less, shells less during harvest, or, in some cases, gives a B. Problem. The harvest of 192 5 bron nt to he attention of certain menoers of the r: rm Crovs Degartient the necessity for a study of varietal factors infln ncin; yield of white pea beans. "Ereguent reins reguired the reyeeted turning of all plots before they could ‘3 u.“— be threshed. It soon became separent that some of the strains were shelling much more under this treatment than othe‘s. A few warm days caised the beans to Sprout. Counts of the beans germinating in ten—foot sections of the rows, were tahen at regula intervals along the plot. In order to have a comparison between all of the varieties, wherein the pick and shelling would be uninfluenced by delayed harvest, Group I was to be sacked and taken into storage Lunediately after being pulled. Group II was to remain in the field one week before being taken to storage. To prevent accidental mixing a systematic method of piling, as shown in Plate I was used. All group piles were turned after each rain or at least every third day. Plate N00 1 The diagonal method of piling the vines and beans from each lot to pre- vent accidental mixing. -7- Group III was to be left in the field one week longer than Group II before being stored. Group IV vas to be left in the field a wee: longer than Group III and then stored. Group V, which had been standing throughout the harvesting of the other groups, was to be pulled and stored the same day that Group IV'was removed frmi the field. Group V was treated in this manner so that a comparison.might be made between the varietal response of delayed harvest upon standing vines and that upon vines which had been piled upon the ground fr m one to three weeks. ’4. Shelling. .A shelling count was rude on.every plot of beans 1 mediately after they were ahen out of the field. Bone whole pods were broken off in the process of pulling or turning. The beans from these were shelled out and counted tepether with the loose beans found upon the plot. Care was exercised in turning the piles so that shelling would be a varietal reSponse to weathering and not a result of rough handliig. 5. Weight of Vine. The plants were rBdOVOd from the sacks and weighed before thresh n3. Later, the thrashed beans were fanned and weighed and this weight sub racted from the total weight of beans and vines, thus giving the weight of vine. ~8— I‘ ‘ o. Threshing and Cleaning. The beans were allowed to dry thoroughly in the field barn before thresn n3. The handymade thresher used was not eguipped with a fan for cleaning, but attached to the chute or outlet was a 1/2 inch mesh screen tray which pensitted the beans to 30 thrugh into a box, and retained the larger bits of broken vines and pods. The latter were removed by hand. It was necessary to drive the cylinder at 900 R. P. h. in order to mane a thorough job of threshing, even though the Speed was such that a high percentage of the beans were Split. In cleaning the beans, a screen was used on tOp which.would peniit only the beans and small bits of trash and dirt to pass through. The bottom screen eernitted only the dirt to sift through. The fan was driven at a Speed great enough to blow away the immature or light bea1s and chaff. The cleaned beans were put back into their reSpective sacks. 7. Yield. 1 The weight of the cleaned beans, or yield of each plot, was taken on 3 Toledo no—Sprinr era; balance. V L) 8. Per Cent of Good Beans. Unfortunately, white pea-beans, then nature, will discolor very easily, if subjected to slightly adverse weather. In 1925, unfavorable weathe‘ caused a state average pic: of 10.7 per cent. Probable Errors (1) All probable errors were eonguted in the usual manner In the Hro o treatxents where X was less than Sb, 3+1 was used -10- in obtaining the standard deviations Iron thich the errors mere conyuted. The probable error of the difference was used to deterxin whether or not the difference between any two means was significant. ( t n13 considered that there was no correlation between varietal 1 3 0:; (a + DH)“ means and in such conputations the formula, P. B. dif : was used. A difference was considered significant only when it was at least 5.3 times the grobable error. (fhis lhiit is used fre4uent1y as the odds are over thirty to one that the difference is not due to chance.) 5. Correlations. Vhei dealing with those characters which are not perfectly correlated, it is necessary to know the degree of correlation actually shown. A statistical calculation is the only accurate way by which.we can definitely detenxine the anount of relationship. Coefficient of Yield. This is known as the "P over 6" method of cengarin; yields. P is the actual yield of the plot and C is the calculated yield of the plot as interyolated between the tee nearest checks. -11- "The coefficient of yield is the quotient obtained by dividing the 1 a yield of a variety sy the calculated yield of the standard or check variety; ro in; on the sage plot the sane year. This is a ratio that becomes unity when the yield of the variety it regresents c'uals that of th standard.
