Proposed Project Due to the development of rapid methods of trans- portation, it has become imperative that crossings be elimi- nated wherever possible. Aside from the convenience afforded, safety should not be disregarded. many accidents could have been averted in the past which will be averted in the future due to the extensive construction campaign now being adopted by most cities and states. We believe that the amount of traffic is sufficient to justify the cost of constructing a grade crossing at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and the Pere marquette Railroad Crossing at Lansing,.Michigan. We submit as a thesis an investigation of the cost and a preliminary design of such a crossing. The natural slopes of the road bed indicates that it is more advantageous to lower the road bed below the tracks and support the railroad by means of a bridge. It should also be noted that the present slope of the road bed is unsatis- factory, being very rough and badly in need of repairs. i . l , V n n ‘ O _ 1' . Egaliminary Survey A line was established along the curb witin the center section of the boulevard and wooden stakes driven down at necessary intervals. 2.‘ggpographicalfl§urvey All buildings, trees, sidewalks, curbs, etc., were tied in with especial regard to driveways and sidewalks opening into the street to be lowered, and land which must be condemned or allowed property damage. 3. Profile and Cross Section An elevation was assumed at the top of a fire hydrant as 100 feet and regarded as a bench mark from which all other elevations were computed. A set of cross section notes were taken along Pennsylvania Avenue and profiles were drawn of roads joining into Pennsylvania within the limits of the roject. V. Design of the Structure 1. Type 2£_Separation The topography or the site makes the selection of the type obvious. There is a decided dip in the road just south of the tracks, and a slight grade up to the tracks from.the north side. This type requires the construction of retaining walls but property damage is diminished consider- ably. 2. Earthwork The earthwork will consist of 38,198.2 cubic yards of cut. This excavated material may be dumped three blocks away, the haul at no time being greater than 1350 feet. The street is bounded on the east by small residences and on the west by one store and several small frame houses. This will necessitate the construction of retaining walls throughout the length of the cut and for considerable distances up side street. 3. Property Damag_ Damages must be allowed to property owners whose property adjoins the cut. In.some cases an entrance driveway cannot be constructed and it wascieemed more economical to con- demn the property outright and obtain as high a resale value as possible. 5. Kind and Type of Structure As the existing street is a boulevard, a center pier will be used which is more economical than a single long span simply supported at the ends. The bridge is a plate girder- type with floor beams supporting a concrete slab. The built up section of the girder was designed but the floor beams and slabs 4. Kind and Type 2; Structure (Continued) were selected from a similar bridge constructed by the Eishigan State Highway Department. The bridge is especially long due to its being on a skew of 72°, and a1- lowances made for a side walk on each side of the road. PLHTE GIRDER 4" spa/7: each 3849' c,- 6. Qgtermination 2: Street Grades In an attempt to minimize the damage to abutting property as much as possible, a maximum.gradient of 6% was used at approaches. This is permissable within the City of Lansing and is not on a state trunk line. Higher gradients are used on some side streets but this is necessary to avoid an exorbitant cost of construction. 2. Economic Considerations To avoid the necessary construction of retain- ing walls, Euclid Street west of Pennsylvania, was di- verted into Bement Street, and Heald Place west of Penn- sylvania was diverted into Larned Street. As no property fronted on these streets no damage was incurred by the change. Retaining walls will be needed for the full length of fill. VII. Conclusion The purpose of this investigation is prime to obtain an approximate figure of the cost of the p: For this reason the actual design was not formally w: out as a final design. However, sufficient care was cised to obtain a practical design from.which estimat cost can be accurately obtained. Unit costs were secured from the Hichigan S' Highway Department and may be considered to remain raj constant for a reasonable period of years. While the total cost of construction may seem.fairly high, the l cation warrants considerable expenditure, and the pres tendency is toward the elimination of crossings whenev possible.
