ABSTRACTPATERNAL RESPONSES TO TODDLERS' NEGATIVE EMOTIONS By Duangporn Pattanakul The purposes of this study were to examine father attachment to the family of origin, fathers' emotion beliefs, toddler temperament, and toddler gender as predictors of fathers' self-reported reactions to their toddlers' negative emotions. The sample was comprised of 31first-time fathers of toddlers between the ages of 18 and 36 months. Simple linear regression analyses were used to examine whether fathers' emotion beliefs mediated the relationship between fathers' attachment to parents and fathers' responses to toddlers' negative emotions. Independent-Samples T-Tests were conducted to test whether fathers responded differently towards toddler boys' and toddler girls' negative emotions. Results indicated that paternal emotion styles did not mediate relations between paternal attachment to the family of origin and fathers' responses to their toddlers' negative emotions. In addition, fathers did not respond differently to toddler boys' and toddler girls' emotions.
