Wishi stories : rhetorical strategies of survivance and continuance in Oklahoma Cherokee foodways
The author employs a description of the Cherokee practices of foraging and cooking wishi (hen-of-the-woods mushrooms), a Cherokee delicacy, to argue that American Indians use foodways to survive and resist the ongoing project of settler colonialism, and to carry culture forward for future generations. Using a cultural rhetorics methodology of story, she gathered the oral histories of three tradition-bearers from her own tribal community who shared with her their experiences of foraging and cooking wishi.
