Fifty-eight 85 were given the Stanford Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility to select highly responsive 85. As a result, 85 were divided into an experimental group of 24 responsive Ss, and a control group of 34 unresponsive 85. All 85 dreams were recorded on tape and examined for the first 5 nights to estab- lish a baseline of types of dreams. At the end of this period, each 8 was invited into a sound proof laboratory and given posthypnotic suggestions to lessen anxiety and modify superego reactions. The findings demonstrated that desensitization, and suggestions to modify the superego suggestions were not effective in revealing latent dream content or,i%3ucidating the dream work itself. Marked differences were found between the responsive and unresponsive group regarding vari- ous personality variables and their application of security operations. To My Family ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to express my fondest appreciation to Dr. Joseph Reyher, my committee chairman, for his support, generosity, and friendship; he has helped to make my graduate education a most rewarding and exciting mile- stone in my life. Correlation Between Frequency of Drive . . . . . . . 20 INTRODUCTION Within the past 25 years, it has become apparent that dream recall is at least partially a function of personality structure. Prior to the development of sleep monitoring, Schrotter (1911) and Nachmansohn (1925) demonstrated that posthypnotic suggestions of dream content could be a powerful method of studying Freud's conceptualization of dreaming. Unfbr- tunately, both investigations were limited by deficiencies in experimental design and quantitative analysis. More recently, many of Freud's theoret— ical formulations of unconscious processes and their relationship to mentation and behavior have received increasing support from varied sources. Of particular interest is his topographic theory or id psychology. Consistent with Freudian theory, Reyher and Della Corte (1981) also reported that low GSR frequency but high primary process mentation and indirect sexual representation surface during the revisualization of dis- turbing dreams. They also cited other investigations showing relation- ships between primary process thinking and creativity; a possible rela- tionship between creativity and emotional instability; a relationship between repression and psychOpathology, the organization of personality in terms of psychosexual stages; and the fUlfillment of repressed sexual wishes. It is the latter finding that is of principal interest in this investigation. Freud's t0pographic theory (Arlow 8 Brenner, 1964) explains dreams to be caused by an automatic, instinctual process that contains the 1 unconscious, preconscious, and conscious. He theorized that all dreams are substitute fulfillments of repressed sexual wishes originating in infancy. Later he included aggression as an instinct (drive) in his con- ception of the psyche (id, ego, and superego) which is generally referred to as his structual theory. Vogel (1978) thought Freud's topographic theory was similar to his theory of sleep-onset mentation. He theorized that sleep-onset mentation is initiated by ego regression. The failure of a number of investigations to demonstrate the influ- ence of a dream through presleep stimulation or REM sleep stimulation (Goodenough, 1978) implies that dreams are instinctual. Studies designed to influence the dreamwork itself have been more successful. Cartwright (1974a) utilized dependent variables that could possibly uncover the process of dream work. She compared the effects of intervals of dreaming and wakefulness on problem solving, and tested her subjects on matched problems before and after two conditions on three problem types: Cross- word puzzles, Remote Associates Test, and Thematic Apperception Test story completions. She found that only the story endings changed more follow- ing a sleep period than an awake period. There was no evidence that a period of sleep could enhance performance on intellectual tasks. However, there was evidence that problems of an emotional nature underwent more change. This might be considered as weak evidence for primary process thinking (distorted drive representation). In another investigation, Cartwright (1974b) used as a presleep stimulus, the wish of her subjects to change some personality quality. Since these qualities occasionally were incorporated into the dream con- tent, she concluded that one function of dreams was an exploration of the emotional components of tensions, using different means from those available to the waking self. Indirect methods employing hypnosis also have been informative with respect to the operation of the dream work. In accordance with Freud's contention that the manifest dream content becomes drawn into the unconscious system, Wiseman and Reyher (1976) demonstrated that hypnotically induced dreams using Rorschach inkblots as stimuli resulted in higher primary process involvement in two subsequent standard administrations of the Rorschach. They tested both waking and simulating subjects. Stoyva (1975) reported that when a subject was given a hypnotic suggestion to dream about a particular topic such as "climbing a tree," these suggestions became a part of a sequential epi- sode; but surprisingly, the total amount of dreaming (REM sleep) was reduced significantly. Reyher (1977a, 1978, 1980) and Reyher and Della Corte (1981) have reported successful uncovering of repressed infantile sexuality when the method of emergent uncovering psychotherapy is applied to dream revisual- ization. Aggression-frustration is almost invariably a secondary reaction to frustration of infantile sexual strivings. However, generalizing from these procedures to noctural dreams is limited because the imager is not asleep, moreover the person is in a waking interpersonal relationship. Nevertheless, the sexual material that comes forward had originated in infancy or early childhood, and it is extremely disturbing to clients. Recent research (Reyer, 1977b, 1980) demonstrated a growing body of evidence that persons who are responsive to a formal hypnotic induction differ in personal strivings from those who are unresponsive. Reyher (1980) fbrmulated two contrasting personality types in which these divergent strivings are embedded within the individual and usually prompts the use of security operations in challenging interpersonal situations (Cavrilides, 1980; Rehyer, 1978, 1980). Reyher's formulation which relates to the present study is as follows: Among those persons who score high on scales of suggestibility are those who seek approval from others, particularly authoritative per- sons, and those who anticipate rejections because of self-conceptions of personal insufficiency. Accordingly, they react with intense anxiety or anger which they must suppress or repress when they objectively are made to feel insufficient through failure or when they perceive signs of disapproval, real or imagined. This conbina- tion of aversive cognitions and affects are referred to as dystonia (Reyher, 1978). They tend to be submissive, conforming, placating and self-effacing, which is a coherent set of strivings and security operations. 0n the other hand, among those individuals who score low on hypnotic susceptibility scales are those individuals who are more concerned with strivings of mastery and autonomy rather than generalized approval seeking. Accordingly, they are more disposed to confer approval upon themselves for behaving and perfbrming in accordance with their own standards rather than those of others. Approval from others is meaningful only when it is deserved. Since they are less dependent on the approval of others, they are more apt to be competitive, defiant and moved to anger; consequently, they are likely to respond with poorer performance to task motivating instructions than to hypnotic suggestions (Dhanens G Lundy, 1975). They also have been characterized as possessing a generalized unwill- ingness to cooperate (Spanos G Bodorik, 1977). Unlike those highly susceptible individuals who seek approval indiscriminatingly to reduce anxiety about personal unacceptance, they tend to have received less severe punishment in childhood (J. Hilgard, 1970) and to have had mothers who were more approving and less anxious (London, 1976). They are characterized by a different coherent set of strivings and security operations. These divergent strivings are consistent with the findings of a series of investigations by Sheehan and his associates (Sheehan, 1971; Sheehan 8 Dolby, 1979). They repeatedly have shown that a subset of highly responsive subjects who score high on dependency also pay more attention to subtle cues (Sheehan, 1971; Sheehan 8 Dolby, 1979). The failure of laboratory methods to influence dream content or to elucidate the dream work itself is consistent with Freud's conception of dreams; that is, visual images (manifest content) serve as vehicles for the gratification of repressed, infantile strivings (latent content). Dreaming is determined by instinctual drives of biological origin, con- sistent (internal mechanisms that cannot be influenced from the outside) with Freud's topographic theory, external stimuli (information) merely is incorporated into some ongoing process. If Freud's formulation is correct, then greater clarity in identifying latent dream content might be forth- coming if the dream censorship can be mitigated. The purpose of this investigation was to explore the feasibility of modifying the dream censorship (an aspect of the superego in Freud's structual theory). Two questions were posed: (1) can posthypnotic sug- gestions be used to desensitize latent dream thoughts and, therefore increase the blatancy of drive representation in the manifest content; and (2) is the sex drive more response-producing than other drives? If Reyher's (1978) formulation regarding the differential distinctive strivings of high and low responsive subjects is valid, then, the two groups should react divergently to desensitization suggestions. METHOD Subjects and Materials Fifty-eight college students in an introductory psychology course volunteered to participate in an experiment in "dreaming." They were given the group form of the Stanfbrd Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility (SSHS) for the purpose of selecting highly responsive 85. On the basis of their scores, each subject was assigned to one of two groups: a responsive group (a score of 7-12) or an unresponsive group (a score of 1-6). There were 24 subjects in the responsive group and 34 subjects in the unresponsive group. Procedure and Equipment Four trained experimenters who were ignorant of the two groups recorded the dreams of all subjects. All used portable tape recorders with microphones aligned to the phone receiver for the express purpose of transcribing dreams verbatim. Subjects were called by telephone during a previously arranged morn- ing time, usually before their usual wake-up hour. Each was asked to tell their former night's dream. In addition, subjects were also asked to report the type of sleep they experienced that previous night (i.e., light, deep, comfortable, restless, etc.). At the end of a 5 day period, each subject was invited into a sound- proof laboratory and greeted warmly by an experimenter who proceeded with the SSHS:H only for the responsive group. Treatment Upon concluding the hypnotic procedure, an attempt was made by the experimenter to attenuate any anxiety that might have been aroused by repressed material during subjects' dreams. Two types of anxiety—reducing suggestions were given: Densensitization Suggestion. "Most of our dreams do not clearly reveal their deeper meanings to us. Very often they seem silly or portray things that make us feel bad and we would rather not think about them or tell them to someone else. Actually there is nothing about our dreams that should make us feel bad or silly and cause us to think less of our- selves. Our thoughts and feelings are not bad in and of themselves. We cannot help having the dream thoughts and feelings that we do; they are simply a part of us. There is another reason why you need not fear any thought or feelings associated with your dreams during the past few nights of dreaming; when you are asleep, your body is immobilized; you are incapable of acting on anything that you might be thinking or feeling. Therefore dreams are a safe way of discovering more about yourself." Superego Modification Suggestion. "'For the next 5 nights, you are going to find that the deeper meaning of your dreams will be more clearly revealed to you. This will be all right. You will learn more about yourself and so will I, and that will be OK. In a sense I will be right inside your head experiencing your dreams along with you as your mind allows the deeper meaning of your dreams to be revealed. This will be a source of comfort for you. Let me assure you that your dreams and their meanings will not be new to me. You will become a more complete person as you achieve these new understandings.'" These suggestions were fOrmulated both to desensitize subjects to whatever repressed drives might be involved in the instigation of dreams and to foster a collaborative attitude. In psychoanalytic terms, the experimenter becomes a secondary and more permissive parental introject which fosters a perception of an accepting superego surrogate. This is mediated by a regressive transference which the hypnotic induction pro- cedure contained. Part of the hypnotic procedure contained a basic reassurance that whatever the subject dreamed, would not be objectionable to the experimenter. Scoring A "motivation" and "anxiety" scale was used to score subject reac- tions during their dream narrations. This was done to assess group dif- ferences. Each scale consisted of five intervals. The motivation scale ranged from (1) little to no effort to recapture dream material to (S) extremely helpful in supplying information in dreams and sleep experiences the previous night. The anxiety scale ranged from (1) mild feelings of uncertainty or apprehension to (S) manifestations from the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system characterized by increased heart rate, shortness of breath or heavy breathing, dryness of the mouth, change in tone of voice, choking, tightness in the chest, trembling and faintness, agitation. The Drive Activation Scale (see Appendix A) is composed of criteria for assessing the degree of activation of drives (sex and anger— aggression) and affects (guilt and love) that have many of the response- producing characteristics present within dreams. Both upward (syntonia) and downward (dystonia) variations in self-esteem also have drive characteristics and were assessed. Nonscorable (NS) was a catch-all category to include any representation in imagery that did not indicate the presence of any of the other mentioned drives. Each of the component drives was scored for explicit depiction and implicit (unconscious) depic- tion. The degree of activation of each drive is assessed by applying implicit and explicit criteria to each visual episode, then determining the degree of drive representation in explicit imagery and whether the imagery, both implicit and explicit, is kinetic and/or interactive. A Drive Activation Score is obtained by summing up drives and dividing by the number of episodes. An episode is defined as that mentation occur- ring between a change in persons, objects and/or settings (Burns G Reyer, 1976). RESULTS Two persons trained on the Drive Activation Scale independently scored 20 randomly selected protocols and achieved an interrater corre- lation coefficient (Pearson) of .95. Interrater correlations of .81 and .86 were obtained for the motivation and anxiety scales, respectively. These were considered to be satisfactory fer the purposes of research. Experimental Manipulation Table 1 reveals that implicit (unconscious) sex decreased in the posttreatment period for both the responsive and unresponsive groups. In contrast, all the remaining drives for the responsive group increased. The increase in anger-aggression, guilt, and negative self-esteem, are all components of dystonia. The increase in anger-aggression reached significance, t = 2.20 (22), p < .05. Also all drives except love, increased on the explicit subscales. The increase was significant for negative self-esteem (high scores indicate low self-esteem), t = 2.11 (22), p < .05. The pattern of results for the responsive group is con- sistent with topographic theory. A decrease in drive representation on the implicit scales would thus indicate an increase in repression. The degree of gratification is directly related to the degree of blatancy of drive representation, whereas frustration appears to be inversely related to the degree of blatancy of drive representation. Thus, a decrease in implicit sex scores should be associated with an increase in anger- aggression, guilt and negative self-esteem. The increase in love is 10 11 Table 1.—-Summary of Means on the Implicit and Explicit Subscales. Means with common superscript differ at the .05 level of significance. consistent with Freud's topographic theory in that love is aim inhibited (desexualized) sex. If these changes in implicit means are not artifact- ual, then the conception of a dynamic unconscious is supportable. Perhaps the uncovering thrust of the procedures and suggestions were sufficiently effective to weaken the integrity of repression over odious infantile longings for the responsive group. This weakening causes anxi- ety which intensifies repression. A series of investigations (Burns 6 Reyher, 1976; Silverman, 1976; Sommerschield G Reyher, 1973) have shown that posthypnotic cues to act upon antisocial impulses creates a momentary weakening in inhibition (repression) which is accompanied by a variety of symptomatic reactions, including outright psychOpathology. A backfire only with respect to sex implies that this is the more response- producing drive and that all the other changes, in the opposite direction 12 are secondary reactions because of increased indirectness (disguise) of drive gratification (wish fulfillment). Nevertheless, the orderliness of the effects with respect to Freudian psychodynamics is invalidated by the lack of a significant pre-post mean difference for sex. Although there was a decrease in the sex drive for the unresponsive group, there was not the same orderliness with respect to Freudian theory on the implicit scales. Of course, by design they were not supposed to be as affected by the experimental treatment. The explicit level, how- ever, is another matter. Anger-aggression significantly, t = 3.10 (22), p < .005, decreased and sex narrowly missed, t = 1.92. Furthermore, all the explicit drive means were smaller than those of the responsive group. As we shall see, they also reported fewer dreams. These data closely conform with Sullivanian constructs (security Operations in self-esteem maintenance). That is, they opposed full compliance to avoid experiencing a loss in autonomy and the formation of negative self- conceptions. This included editing their dreams. Type of Security Operation in Relation to Responsiveness Tables 2 and 3 present a condensed version of a continuum of security operations derived from Gavrilides' (1980) data and which was used pro- ductively in another investigation (Reyher, Allen, 8 Sills, 1980). These data were generated by two raters who were blind as to the subject's group membership. Only those security Operations were used that were independently identified by the two raters. In the center is verbalized and behavioral indicators (sighs) of psychic pain (distress) associated with admission of performance insufficiency (failure to recall a dream). 13 Table 2.--Summary of Security Operations for the Responsive Group. Extending from the right of Pn are the risk-taking security operations of mastery-dominance-autonomy which specify common interpersonal methods fbr enhancing one's own self-esteem at the expense of another. They are: nasty/testy, critical, confronting (N/T), autonomy (Aut), self-aggrandizement (SAg) and resistance (Rt). N/T is self-evident. Autonomy is indexed when subjects' place their own concerns and convenience before the interests of the experimenter. Self- aggrandizement is denoted by statements highlighting one's own skills, assets, knowledge, connections and so forth; resistance is exhibited most commonly by noncompliance, asking trivial questions, making requests for rationales, and otherwise distracting conversation. Along with verbal expressions of anxiety, yet to be reported, the security operations identified in Tables 2 and 3 monitor how subjects cope with the component processes of dystonia: psychic pain, guilt- tinged feelings of insufficiency, anger-aggression, and anxiety generated by anticipated rejection (Reyher, 1978). These tables show that both responsive and unresponsive subjects equally experienced psychic pain when recall failed and they were highly motivated to win approval by cooPeration and by being a person worthy of esteem. In fact, the unre- sponsive group was more (x2 = 2.28, p < .05) self-disclosing of psychic pain and tended to engage preferentially in appeasement by comments 16 implying that they could or would do better with the Offer of apologies. At the same time, however, they were more able to define their own priori- ties, establish limits, and assert themselves, usually guardedly. Ten of the unresponsive subjects received scores on interpersonal risk-taking, whereas none of the responsive subjects received even one such score. When the two groups were compared with respect tO the two types of security operations, a significant Chi square, x2 = 4.02 (1), p < .05, was produced. Obviously, the absence Of risk-taking security operations in the responsive group contributed most to the overall variance. Motivation and anxiety Table 4 shows the means and standard deviations Of the pre and post scores of the respondent and unrespondent groups for both motivation and anxiety. There were no significant differences (ANOVA on repeated mea- sures), but there was a significant increase in the variance of the responsive group for the post motivation scores, F (23, 23) = 24.83, p < .01. This increase in variability suggests that the experimental manipulation had a differential effect across subjects in the respondent group because of undetected personality differences. Future investigations might identify these differences by trichotomizing responsivity and using a more refined instrument (Cavrilides, 1980) for assessing security Operations. Insert Table 4 about here To determine if the two experimental groups represented divergent yet coherent strivings and related behaviors, Pearson correlations were 17 Table 4.--Summary of means and F values for the anxiety and motivation scales. Table 5 shows an impres- sive increase in coherence Of effects for the responsive group. With the exception of the correlation between frequency and anxiety, all the cor- relations increased in the post period. The number of significant cor— relations increased from 1 to 3. Table 6 shows the Opposite pattern for the unresponsive group. It was initially coherent in the pre—period. Whereas five of the six correlations were significant in the pre-period, only one was significant in the post—period. A more delineated profile of the two divergent personality organiza- tions associated with the responsive and unresponsive groups is provided by Tables 7 and 8 which show the correlations between the frequency of representation of each of the component drives of the Drive Activation Scale with motivation and anxiety for the pre- and post-periods. Not only do the correlations consistently increase in the post-period for the unresponsive group, for both anxiety and motivation, but sex and anger-aggression become significant for motivation (Table 8). These tables clearly show the oppositional tendencies of unresponsive group and a significant nega- tive correlation (-.32) between guilt and anxiety only in the post- period. Could this mean that anxiety in unresponsive persons tends to mask guilt stemming from their oppositional tendencies? This interpre- tation is consistent with the correlation of .47 between guilt and anxiety for responsive persons. They tend not to suppress their anxiety. Dream Recall As would be expected from other investigations (Reyher, 1980), the responsive group recalled significantly (t = 2.19 [56], p < .05, two- tailed) more dreams than did the unresponsive group. The means and standard deviations were 2.74 (2.68) and 4.38 (2.10), respectively, for the two groups. A dream was defined as an episode which included some action by or upon the dreamer. A cursory comparison between the dreams of responsive and unrespon- sive subjects was uninformative with respect to differences. It should be noted that many Of the dreams would have been classifiable as anxiety dreams, and they appeared to differ in no obvious ways from the usual dreams reported by clients in psychotherapy. They varied from fragmen- tary mentation to long involved sagas. DISCUSSION The results are ambiguous with respect to the first hypothesis posed, "Can posthypnotic suggestion be used to desensitize latent dream thoughts?" The orderliness of the mean changes on the implicit scales of the respon- sive group was impressive with respect to Freud's topographic theory; that is, a decrease in sex, but an increase in the other subscales. Neverthe- less, the decrease in sex was not significant. Even if sex had decreased significantly, 3 cause and effect relationship could not be made. A con— servative interpretation of the implicit scale means demonstrates that anger-aggression on the implicit scale for the responsive group has the same source as the anger-aggression on the explicit scale for the unrespon- sive group; namely, a reaction to an intrusion on one's private life. The only difference is that the responsive subjects tended to repress the anger and aggressive impulses. Noted earlier, this is consistent with their personal strivings and associated characteristics. The morning wake-up calls constituted an Objective intrusion in the subjects' early morning sleep time and was likely to be a conscious source of annoyance for the unresponsive subjects in particular. This interpre— tation is consistent with their markedly lower dream recall mean. It is not unreasonable to suppose that responsive subjects may have lowered their criteria for what constitutes a dream or even exaggerated a few to avoid discord (Reyher, 1980). The resulting anger-aggression because of the frustration of their strivings for mastery and autonomy may have 22 23 been repressed. These questions have some hope of being resolved now that procedures and instruments are available. They no longer have to remain in the limbo of clinical inference. The conception of the highly hypnotizable person evolving in this line of inquiry is at variance with the widely held view that such per- sons possess a constellation Of characteristics that make them a model of emotional adjustment (Hilgard, 1965), which includes the capacity to become absorbed in imaginal activities (Hilgard, 1979), to possess an adventuresome mind, and enjoy creativity (Bowers 6 Bowers, 1979). This excludes competitive athletes and scientists who tend to be unresponsive (Hilgard, 1979). It also should be noted that the imaginative absorption of responsive persons may include an escape from harsh reality into books and daydreams and the creation of imaginary playmates (Barber 6 Glass, 1962). Not to be overlooked is an impressive literature which casts an unfavorable shadow over the intra- and interpersonal adjustment of creative persons (Stein, 1974). Creativity, primary process thinking, and psychosis appear to be linked (Suler, 1980). Also, creative persons at an impasse show a marked insufficiency of repression and psycho- pathology (Reyher, 1980; Bendefeldt, Miller, G Ludwig, 1975). There also appears to be a relationship between hypnotizability and phobias (Frankel, 1976). The relative adequacy of Freud's topographic and structural theories is not at issue. Other measures would need to have been integrated into the research design if these theories were to be incorporated into this study. All that can be said is that the concepts Of unconscious motiva- tion (implicit subscales) and security Operations are useful. The term 24 security operation coined by Sullivan, reflects an interpersonal theory based upon the pursuit of security, not instinctual, repressed drives. Obviously, both are useful ways of conceptualizing behavior. Unfortun— ately, the data cannot clarify these issues. Neither do they elucidate the genesis of dreams. Almost all the subjects had one or more dreams that could be classified as either an anxiety dream or a nightmare, yet the reasons for them were not apparent in any objective sense. A cursory comparison of dream content in no way differentiates responsive and unresponsive subjects nor male and female subjects. This study has shown that the use of unconscious subscales and security Operations can be useful in dream research. An examination of dream protocol of each group shows that the responsive Ss tend to have strivings for approval which require them to suppress anger-aggression and react with submissiveness or placation. They tend to over respond or increase their efforts when given directives. Their primary goal seems to be to avoid disapproval and failure at any cost. On the other hand, the results have demonstrated that the unresponsive Ss tend to have greater strivings for autonomy or mastery of a task. They are less apt to suppress anger-aggression, and above all, become competitive or uncoopera- tive when they sense they are under pressure to conform or submit to authority (Reyher, 1978, 1980). The significance of the scale was to reflect the activation of oedipal strivings. Without modifying or sacrificing the ability of the scale, this author has incor- porated it in the present study to increase its sensitivity to oedipal drive expressions in dreams. In their scale, Burns and Reyher (1976) weighed the five principle drives of the oedipal complex in accordance with their presumed patho- genicity. These were: Sex, Anger-Aggression, Love-Tenderness, Guilt, Self-esteem, and a catch-all category called NS or Nonscorable which included any representation in imagery that did not indicate the presence of any of the five oedipal complex drives. The drives were then examined and compiled on the following dimen- sions: (D) drive presence, (R) the degree of drive representation, (Dr) the remoteness of derivatives, (K) whether the drive achieved expression in motility, and (1) whether or not the images interacted with each other or with other Objects. When applied to the present study, each of these factors received a score which when either combined or multiplied together, produced a drive activation score for each episode* in all dream protocols. *episode = a cohesive sequence of images. 29 APPENDIX B STANFORD SCALE OF HYPNOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY APPENDIX B STANFORD SCALE OF HYPNOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY Name: Date: Age: Sex: Class: Major: Present Address: Phone: Permanent Address: Phone: Have you ever been hypnotized? We wish you to estimate whether or not you objectively responded to these 11 suggestions, that is, whether or not an onlooker would have Observed that you did not did not make certain definite responses by certain specific, predefined criteria. In this section we are thus interested in your estimates of your outward behavior and not in what your inner, subjective experience of it was like. Later on you will be given an Opportunity to describe your inner, subjective experience, but in this section refer only to the outward behavioral responses irrespective of what the experience may have been like subjectively. It is understood that your estimates may in some cases not be as accurate as you might wish them to be and that you might even have to guess. But we want you to make whatever you feel to be your best estimates regardless. Beneath a description Of each of the 11 suggestions are sets of two responses, labeled A and B. Please circle A or B for each question, which- ever you judge to be the more accurate. Please answer every question. Failure to give a definite answer to every question may lead to disquali- fication of your record. I. HEAD FALLING You were first told to sit up straight in your chair for 30 seconds and then to think of your head falling forward. Would you estimate that an onlooker would have Observed that your head fell forward at least two inches during the time you were thinking about it happening? Circle one: A. My head fell forward at least two inches. B. My head fell forward less than two inches. II. EYE CLOSURE You were next told to rest your hands in your lap and pick out a spot on either hand as a target and concentrate on it. You were then told that your eyelids were becoming tired and heavy. Would you estimate that an onlooker would have observed that your eyelids had closed (before the time you were told to close them deliberately)? Circle one: A. My eyelids had closed by then. B. My eyelids had not closed by then. 34 Page 5 III. HAND LOWERING (Left Hand) You were next told to extend your left arm straight out and feel it becoming heavy as though a weight were pulling the hand and arm down. Would you estimate that an onlooker would have observed that your hand lowered at least six inches (before the time you were told to let your hand down deliberately)? Circle one: A. My hand had lowered at least six inches by then. B. My hand had lowered less than six inches by then. IV. ARM IMMOBILIZATION (Right Arm) You were next told how heavy your right hand and arm felt and then told to try to lift your hand up. Would you estimate that an onlooker would have observed that you did 233 lift your hand and arm up at least one inch (before you were told to stop trying)? Circle one: A. I did not lift my hand and arm at least one inch by then. B. I did lift my hand and arm an inch or more by then. V. FINGER LOCK You were next told to interlock your fingers, told how your fingers would become tightly interlocked, and then told to try to take your hands apart. Would you estimate that an onlooker would have observed that your fingers were incompletely separated (before you were told to stop trying to take them apart)? Circle one: A. My fingers were still incompletely separated by then. B. My fingers had completely separated by then. VI. ARM RIGIDITY (Left) You were told to extend your left arm straight out and make a fist, told to notice it becoming stiff, and then told to try to bend it. Would you estimate that an onlooker would have Observed that there was less than two inches of arm bending (before you were told to stop trying)? Circle one: A. My arm was bent less than two inches by then. B. My arm was bent two or more inches by then. 35 Page 6 VII. MOVING HANDS TOGETHER You were next told to hold your hands out in front of you about a foot apart and then told to imagine a force pulling your hands together. Would you estimate that an onlooker would have Observed that your hands were not over six inches apart (before you were told to return your hands to their resting position)? Circle one: A. My hands were not more than six inches apart by then. B. My hands were still more than six inches apart by then. VIII. COMMUNICATION INHIBITION You were next told to think how hard it might be to shake your hand to indicate "no" and then told to try. Would you estimate that 33 onlooker would have observed you to make a recognizable shake of the head "no"? (That is, before you were told to stop trying?) Circle one: A. I did pg: recognizably shake my head "no." B. I did recognizably shake my head "no." IX. EXPERIENCING OF FLY You were next told to become aware Of the buzzing of a fly which was said to become annoying, and then you were told to shoo it away. Would you estimate that an onlooker would have Observed you make any movement, any grimacing, any outward acknowledgment of an effect (regardless of what it was like subjectively)? Circle one: A. I did make some outward acknowledgment. B. I did not make any outward acknowledgment. X. EYE CATALEPSY You were next told that your eyelids were so tightly closed that you could not Open them, and then were told to try to do so. Would you estimate that an onlooker would have Observed that your eyes remained closed (before you were told to stop trying)? Circle one: A. My eyes remained closed. B. My eyes had Opened. 36 Page 7 x1. POST-HYPNOTIC SUGGESTION (Touching Left Ankle) You were next told that after you were awakened you would hear a tapping noise at which time you would reach down and touch your left ankle. You were further informed that you would do this but forget being told to do so. Would you estimate that an onlooker would have Observed either that you reached down and touched your left ankle, or that you made any partial movement to do so? Circle one: A. I made at least an observable partial movement to touch my left ankle. B. I did not make even a partial movement to touch my left ankle, which would have been observable. 37 Page 8 YOU MAY NOW REFER TO EARLIER PAGES - BUT PLEASE DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING FURTHER ON THEM SECTION ON INNER, SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCES 1. Regarding the suggestion of EXPERIENCING A FLY--how real was it to you? How vividly did you hear and feel it? Did you really believe at the time that it was there? Was there any doubt about its reality. 2. Regarding the two suggestions Of HAND LOWERING (Left) and HANDS MOVING TOGETHER--was it subjectively convincing each time the effect was happen- ing entirely by itself? Was there any feeling either time you were help- ing it along? 3. On the remainder of this page please describe any other Of your inner, subjective experiences during the procedure which you feel to be of interest. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION APPENDIX C DREAM RE PORTS APPENDIX C DREAM REPORTS RESPONSIVES Subject #1 Oh, oh, ok, -um (9 sec.) I can't really remember em right now. Ah yeah! Um, I was . . . at some concert. Outside. First of all, and l was, I paid a lot of money . . . to see it. (6 sec) by Tommy James and the Shondells. I saw them last night, so um, (laughs) and um, then later on, um, we were all walking up north to go fishing or something, and um, (5 sec.) I don't know why but, (breathy sigh) we're walking along like an ocean, except, along the way (sigh) I don't know (said quietly). We were almost there and I woke up. (laughs) OK. Um . . . all I remember is there was um . . . some class here that I really really wanted, and I went to sign up for it and the pro- fessor wasn't there, and I don't . . . anymore, and they weren't Offering it . . . and so I signed up for it anyway (breathy laugh) and um . all we did up . . . everytime when I just went ice-skating. . . . All around because the river was flooded . . . and (breathy laugh) . . . and um, at the end of the term I went to get my grades you know, and I went to my grandmother's to get my grades, cuz she lives in Lansing. And, all she kept doing was giving me these plants, these green plants that she said she got from the greenhouse and I had 'em all over my room, and they were all, oh, they didn't look very healthy (breathy laugh) and um, (5 sec) oh, that's about all I remember. 38 39 Um, . . . (sigh) oh, I can't really remember today. Um . . . let's see. I can't remember today's but yesterday right after I hung up I remembered mine and wrote it down if you want it. Oh, um . . . yesterday was ah . . . ok first of all I had two, in the first one I was golfing, with my dad and some other man; I don't know who it was (said aside). And . . . it was somebody who was supposed to be really good though . . . and we got out there and . . . he um . . . on the first tee he went to the wrong green and he was just playing really awful. And on one hold, like he--there was a . . . a big hill on the other side of the green and he hit up it and then . . . rolled all the way past the tees where we were standing and everything--it was really funny. And um . that's about the whole-~all I can remember about that one. And then the next one was . . . kind Of a nightmare like. It was um . . . well I live in Dearborn. And I was um . . . going shopping . . . and 1 took a bus down to Detroit. And . . . I was going to go to the Jacobson's there and . . it was a really huge building on the outside and I went inside and I kept going up and down the ele-escalators . . . and I couldn't find any rooms it was just all hallways. Then I then I spent all day going up and down these escalators and the stairs and everything looking for these rooms. And um . . . finally it was the end Of the day and I saw this man standing around and so I went up--I went over and I asked him where . . . they kept the women's clothes and stuff . . . and he said, "oh, fOllow me” and so I started to follow him and then . . . oh I don't know-~something happened and I realized I better not go with him anymore . . . or um . . . that this was just a big front for somethin' goin' on in the building . . . and if I went in there something would happen to me and so I started running 40 outside and it was . . . Oh it must have been about five, cuz it was rush hour outside. And I just . . . I ran and I . . . ran into this girl's car. I don't know who it was . . . and she asked me . . . what I was doing and I said I. . . . You know I had to get away from there . . . and she um . . . I . . . she asked me where I lived and I told her Dearborn, and she said she lived in Dearborn . . . and so she gave me a ride home I guess she lived on my street or something but I'd never seen her before. (sniffs) and . . . I think that's all I can remember about that one too. Oh . . . oh . . . well I can't remember right now . . . um . . . I (laughs) I might remember later. Yeah, um, I don't remember a whole lot but I remember my sister was um . . . I don't know she was engaged, on, oh about five times to the same guy and then she kept breaking it off, and then finally she told us some- thin one day somethin she was going to elope with some other guy and um oh I don't remember she was we were helping her get dressed and everything and I don't know, some guy we didn't know, that's all (laughs) I can remember about it. Oh (sigh) Ok. um, oh, I just woke up I can't remember usually it takes me a few um, I'm trying to think, oh I really can't remember. I'll tell you tomorrow if I remember. Um, I really didn't get very much sleep last night (laughs) so you, might be better, to try another time. Subject #2 All I can think of is a car, you know like, riding in a car? And end of the year. That's about all. 41 And, some of em, everybody had, funny they all had cards in their hands at the table and then I dreamed that that there was a snake that got loose like, you know, it was ah, it was like after me except that nobody could find it and nobody could see it, but like I knew it was there, it was really strange like you know, nobody believed that there was a snake but me (laughs). That's really all I remember. Ahh, yeah. I was dreaming that my boyfriend's mother was in the hospital. And, I don't know, that I was visiting her, and then, I don't I took her jello, (laughs), that's about all. Yeah, um, I was dreaming that I was I was cutting my sister's hair, and that ah, all her friends were over and they were all crying and every- thing, but she already had short hair and I don't know, it didn't look any different, (laughs), but um, it was really short and ah, I dreamt earlier like I dreamt something else and I woke up you know so I . . . I dreamt that I was at a hos, working at a hospital? and this guy that I had met, that I had met a couple weeks ago he came in the hospital . . . he's from, he's from Virginia . . . and she said I had to go to Virginia with him and I didn't wanna' go and everybody was makin me go but I didn't (laughingly) wanna' go . . . and that was all. Ah, Yeah, let me think a second (8 sec) I know I was dreamin . . . cuz like you know l--I can think from what I was dreamin--about when . . . oh, I don't remember. Ah, Yeah--I . . . dreamt that like . . . I was in--l was in this room . cuz like most of my dreams . . . when I have a bedroom it's always the same bedroom you know, but it's not-~I've never seen the room before' except for in my dreams and . . . it was ah like there was all kinds of 42 spider webs . . . and um . . . I hate spiders and I couldn't get in--you know, and there was this great big Old giant spider and I was scared to death but I had to go to bed cuz I was so tired——so . . . these, these, these guys--I don't even know who they were-~were--were--trying to kill the spider and . . . they couldn't find it you know cuz like it was like it disappeared--you know--it--it was like it was hiding you know and they couldn't find the spider there to kill the spider . . . so I don't really-- I don't even remember if they ever found it or not (laughs). Mmmmm yeah--let me think a second . . . um . . . I dreamt I was like opening all these giftsl guess--I don't know, I don't remember if it was like my birthday or what . . . but um . . . they were like big boxes and littler boxes that--all the way down and . . . except that when I got all the way down (laughs) there was nothin in it and I was gettin really, you know, upset and everything cuz there was . . . nothing ever inside of 'em (laughs). And . . . that's all I can--that's all I can remember was openin' all the boxes. I don't think I dreamt any--I don't remember anything at all (laughs). Subject #3 Ah-—yeah--um . . . let's see. The main one . . . that I remember-- but--right now, is ah, is about chemistry it's about a chem lab I hadda do to make this compound. I was trying all different ways to do it and kept screwin up. (laughs) Couldn't get it to work out. That's it right now. Mm-hm, I had a few last night. Um first I had this dream that ah this guy down the hall had a girl in his room, so ah we all got out this paint and paintbrushes and we painted all this weird stuff on his door. Then ah, I had another dream, that ah, I took some people on my floor went 43 on a canoe trip up north on some river and we canoed, and ah I think that's it yeah. Mm-hmm. Ah, ok, I had this one dream last night that I was goin to Florida. Ah, ok, ok, but anyway I was in Florida in this dream. Another dream my suitemate and I went to the store and bought some food, and all we did was come back to the dorm and eat some sandwiches. That's about it. Ah yes. I had one too, let me think. No not right now. I've got a (unclear word) or somethin two nights ago that I remembered ah during the day and I was going to tell you the other morning but ah, I was at work until 9:30. I'm sorry, all right. I have this 'I just don't wanna wake my roommate.’ Ah, all right I had a dream, that I was livin in this dormitory and my little sister was livin' down the hall and I went down to her room to see her, and when I got there there was 4 ah, alligators on the floor so I grabbed em by the tail, an put em in there and a little bit later my older sister got there. I opened up the bag to show her, and the alligators had turned into turtles. And that was the end of the dream. And the other dream I went to apply for a job and I was talkin to this secretary and ah she asked me when I could start workin' and I said ah you know right then, then ah the boss came in and asked me why I couldn't have been there two weeks ago and I got really ticked off at him and started shoutin' at him, cussin' him out and everything and so he just told me to go there . . . cuz ah . . . anybody who cussed out the boss couldn't have a job there. So ah . . . I left an I--I--but later on that night I broke into their workshop. An I--just played around with the tools and stuff. An ah--that was the end Of that dream. 44 And-~I had one more. That ah . . . (sniff) my best friend and I--my best friend from ah . . . when I was little. I haven't seen him in about . . . 6 years or so . . . um . . . came over . . . to my house. In this dream (said aside). And ah . . . we ah . . . went out for a walk. And . ended up by this lake. . . . An'--remember when I told ya I had a . A dream-~like I was walkin in the woods? (UH-HUH) Well this is part of it. That's--that's all I remembered at the time, but . . . we ended up ah . . . at this lake. There was ah, an Old garage down there . that ah . . . these people that owned a funeral home--it was their garage. SO ah . . . Gordon wanted to break into see if there's any ah . dead bodies or anything in there . . . so we broke in but all they had was . . . a lot of hardware and stuff in there--shovels and things. But anyway we got caught and we were in there . . . but--somebody started comin' after us . . . so ah . . . we took off and ran . . . an' ah--ended up at this camp that I used to work at . . . and . . . got there . went to the nature--I used to work there in the nature area, so I got to the camp and went up to the nature area (unclear) and looked around and . that was the end of that. An I--I remember having . . . at least one last night but I can't remember it right now but like I'll probably remember it later on today. Ah . . . I had a hard time gettin' to sleep. Terry was at work when I called. Uh-huh . . . ah . . . wow, I can't remember last night's right now ah . . . the night before last . . . I didn't have any . . . that I can remember. But, the night before that . . . I had a dream that, well, first of all a bunch of us are lookin' for a house for next year . . . so 45 I just had a dream that we were checkin' out of this house an' we were just . . . lookin' it all over. It was a really neat house it w- it was an old one we went up in the attic . . . an' we just explored the whole thing--had a lot of secret passages and stuff. That's the end of that dream. But ah . . . I think . . . I'm pretty sure I had some last night so I'm goin' to have to try to remember 'em today. Ah . . . I didn't have any last night . . . that I can remember it right now but I remembered some yesterday I had the night before. Ok. There is um . . . uh . . . I had a dream. In my dreams-—all the dreams I had the night before last. I dreamt that I was in Kalamazoo-- that's the town I grew up in. An' an . . . so my mom was talkin' to my grandmother . . . and--we were just kind of . . . sittin' there talkin' I don't remember too--to what she's--she told me-—I remember she said my hair was too long--to get a haircut. But . . . 223 dream. Another dream . . . I got a . . . a ppppy. I never had a dog, but I got this dog in my dream and I taught him how to do tricks and stuff. . . . An' ah the 333: dream. My parents were . . . leaving for Ohio . . . an' they were in their car an' they wanted me to follow 'em down there--in this dream I had a . . . sports c-- a sports car . . . in the garage. And so instead of followin' 'em down, I just went out in the garage . . . an' ah, a friend of mine—-a football player--we just got in the car an' set up the stereo in the garage. . . . We didn't even start up the car--we just like pre- tended we were drivin' . . . it was pretty strange (laugh). And--that's all. Ah--yeah, I remembered the one I had the other night ah . . . I just remember I was. (mumble) Ok I just remember I took my girlfriend shopping 46 . . and we passed this display that had a bunch of kites in it. And, she wanted to buy a kite and go kite flying, but I wouldn't buy her one. That's all I remember from the . . . one . . . last night. Ahh . . . that was the night before last--and . . . ah 3333 nights (breathy laugh). I don't remember just after I wake up. I'll have to tell you tomorrow--are you callin' tomorrow morning? Subject #4 Well . . . um, I woke up about 10 minutes ago. (uh-huh) all right? And all 1 could remember was this one about some--some lady was giving me . some pills. (uh-huh) and there was like two red, two green, and two white. (2 sec) (uh-huh) and that was all I could--like remember. Real good! (laughs) I can't even remember. Pretty good. Wow (laughs) . . . I don't know it--it seems like I can't even think of it when I'm getting up. (uh-huh) like I'll sleep at night and if I wake up or something I'll know it. Real good. Um . . . yeah. I was dreaming about homework. (laughs) I think it's been bothering me that I have what three tests and a paper but I wrote my paper in my sleep (laughs) (3 sec) Ok? W., Well, I woke up real hot (laughs) it's real hot in here, but other than that . . . Yeah we did. Um . . . Saturday woke--I woke up and I had dreamt about . . . this girlfriend and I . . . we worked in a factory? And it was like a machine factory only that we were making doughnuts. And they 47 were oblong and we had to put green glaze on 'em (laughs) oh! (laughs) A--and--I think that was about it. Well, I've been up studying for about an hour you know I can't even remember (laughs). Real good. Uh--huh. Um . . . one of my dreams I dreamt that I was skiing on a mountain . . . and I couldn't get down . . . 1 just kept skiing and I never hit the bottom (uh-huh) and then I had another dream that our dog had won an award for eating the most chipmunks in the neighborhood. (laughs) Real good. Oh yeah, that's right . . . Yeah! I had had a dream that um, . . . my boyfriend was in the hospital for an operation on his arm . . . [uh-huh. . . . How did you sleep the night before?] Well . . . pretty good. I can't remember. You just . . . pulled me right out of 333 and I can't even think. Ok! Great! Real good. Yeah . . . I dreamt about this girlfriend of mine . . . who put her --her dog and her bird on her porch and somebody stole it. It's kind of strange 'cuz she doesn't have a dog, a bird, or a porch (laughs). And then I dreamt that I was at a party . . . just watching people (uh-huh). And that was it. Real good. 48 Subject #5 Ohh, uh, well and about the other day. I was thinking about a lady who was really like she was drunk and the things I can remember real well. The things she did to me when I was little, like uh, they--they didn't fit together too well a lot of the time, um, and she stuck one in my mailbox and I can remember playing tennis with her and so forth. That's about all I remember. Yeah, I had about 3 of 'em, um . . . the first one I had . . . was um kind of the suggestion of someone else's dream. We were playing yuker? and . . . oh the rules were really different we were just playing um . . . do you know how to play yuker? Cuz otherwise it'd be really hard for me to explain. Um, ok, well we played with really different rules and all of a sudden all these people started walking into my room I said you know, ”please don't mess up, ok?” But they still kept coming three any- way, so . . . I said 'all right' you know and just picked up and walked to another room and, it was . . . it was a room, I don't--can't explain it really there wasn't too much in it except there was ah, ah . . . there was a bed in it, there was just a floor and a rug, so we played in there. And that wasn't somebody's um dorm room-—it was an empty room down there (sigh) and . . . then I had another dream that it was warm outside and we were all, you know, walking to class without any . . . coats on etc., etc., and there wasn't too much to that one. That's about all I can remember on that one--I just remember it was really nice. Um, . . . yeah if I can remember 'em . . . um . . . let me think for a minute. (5 sec) 1 really can't remember any. Um, ok, let me think for a minute (3 sec) um . . . I remember I had a dream about a castle and . . . I was with a bunch Of my friends there 49 and everyone else was dressed up in you know, helmets and all that kind Of stuff all but me I'm in my real clothes so we were just walking, through it you know like and, . . . we went out onto the porch and . sat around for a little while and then we went swimming . . . and, oh (7 sec) that's about all. Um . . . yeah . . . oh, um . . . that's Ok. I dreamed about a lake and that woke me up and then (9 sec) then (5 sec) I remember thinking about warm weather. . . . I don't know if I was dreaming about it or what (4 sec) but that's about all that I can think of. Yeah . . . well all my dreams have been about that, so . . . like um . . . last night I had a dream that um . . . my roommate and I were just laying in bed sleeping . . . and it was pretty late at night and um . . . her bed goes along the window it's kinda' low . . . and all of a sudden they was throwin' stuff thru the window breakin' glass . . . so I threw my coat on top of her and told her you know not to move and I went around to her desk . . . and peaked out the window but I couldn't see anybody so I ran to the phone and . . . started calling the police then somebody . . . came down the next door was banging on the door . . . and um . . . (unclear) . . . crawling around . . . that's all I can remember. Um . . . shit, I gotta' think (5 sec) I had a dream about hair! (and um, I don't know if it's just cuz I got my hair cut or not) but I was chokin' on all this hair--ah really-~super, super long hair . . and it was all in my mouth . . . and I was just, you know, pullin' to get some of it out . . . (think what you want (hugh) but that's what it was). Um . . . I'm sure there was something else (9 sec) Oh, I don't know I had a dream that . 50 I had lived in the house of the people that I used to work for . . and um . . . everything was the same, you know, all their furnishings and everything when I was a (unclear) there and . . . I had a dream that I had a dream sort of a really bad dream that I woke up screamin' and I went . round and around the house . . . finally I got back into bed and I sat up . . . in bed and I pulled the sheet over my head . Yeah . . . um but that was strong cuz I . . . when I started dreamin' that, I dreamt I was sleeping . . . and then--then I woke up--just really quick, I mean--pg£flmg--but in the dream I woke up really quick. Um . . . gosh I had so few cuz I went to bed so late um . . . um . . oh I remember another dream I had yesterday . . . um . . . I was . talking--I was waiting in line to talk tt> my professor . . . and ah--this guy in front of me--who I think was in my class . . . and he was there--we were . . . waiting and waiting (unclear) he said 'oh, um--do you have any cats?!‘ and . . . the professor says "yeah--I have one." He says "oh-~I have two!" and then the guy asked him if he wanted to buy anymore . . . that was all I could remember. Um I can't remember if I even had any last night-~I went to bed around five. Subject #6 Um, I didn't dream at all last night. Nothing I can think of er you know, I just got up a little while ago, but I just can't think of anything. It was weird, it was really bizarre. Um . . . I dreamt, (ha) I think itwas like about, like my ex-boyfriend (laugh) and that we were married and got divorced . . . and . . . that was about it (laugh). 51 Um . . . um . . . I'm trying to remember . . . Oh, I can't remember all of it, I was . . . um . . . running through a field . . . and (sigh) there're all kinds of people running after me but I don't know why (sigh) (4 sec). I'm trying to think. I can't remember anything else. (sigh) oh I'm just tryin' to think. I just got . . . I can't remember. Um . . . oh the more I try to think the more I forget. Oh, I honestly can't remember (breathy laugh) and it bothers me cuz I just woke up. Um yeah . . . it was um . . . I dreamt like it was . . . I was . I went out west? . . . For spring break (breathy laugh sigh) and, oh (sigh) . oh . . . a lot of weird things really weird things happened to me like (sigh) . . . like I--I ran out of money and I got lost and (sigh) . . . just all kinds of really little things and . . . and I and I—- I started to cry and stuff like like really dumb things like my mother told me would happen if I went alone. (sigh) I think that's all (sigh) I can't remember all the things that happened. Um . . . yeah . . . I dreamt that m-my brother-in-law was in a car accident and . . . I went to stay with my sister . . . fOr awhile--I was living in her house . . . staying with her cuz she didn't want to be alone and . . . and then all of a sudden it was a really weird thing cuz I don't remember what happened but all of a sudden my sister wasn't there anymore I was just living in her house . . . all by myself and I just . . . it wasn't in the house she lives in now it was in her (laughs) old house . . . that was it. Um . . . yeah . . . I dreamt . . . I was back in high school . and I wrote a-a story for my English teacher . . . and she really liked 52 it she wanted to publish it . . . and I--I lost it (laughs) and somebody else found it--and gave it to her . . . and . . . and um . . . she--she took it from them, she didn't--she didn't think it was mine . . . and it upset me (breathy laugh) and . . . I don't know I kind of blanked out after that 1 don't think anything happened after that. Um—-yeah--um--I dreamt that I went--it was summer time . . . and I went-—to--to Massachusetts to visit my roommate . . . and ah . . . we were just doing all kinds of stuff and having a good time and then she got mad at me for somethin' . . . and--she wouldn't pay any attention to me and it was real miserable (half laughs) and I felt really lonely . and I couldn't get home (breathy laugh) and . . . I think that was it. Um . . . yeah um--I think I had two dreams (laughs). Um there was one ah. I was standing on a stage and I was wearing a long dress . . and there was a-a big audience and I was speaking . . . and there was a guy in the front row prompting me . . . and I got--so involved in him prompting me I forgot what I was saying and watching him . . . and I was tryin' to read his lips and then all of a sudden I couldn't remember what I was supposed to say . . . and I just stood there and everybody laughed at me . . . and then . . . and then there was one where I was—-I was in Canada where we go every summer and I was--I was walkin' down the beach and it was . . . it started to rain . . . and I--then I went . . . up the-- the camp road, I was walkin' down a dirt road and it was like kinda-- kinda through the woods to the campground, and I got to a campsite but it wasn't ours and there was a--there was a a car and a tent and--a tarp over the picnic table so I just went and sat at the "table” under the tarp . . . and ah . . . all of a sudden my--my mom came out of the tent 53 and . . . and she--she said that she'd been really worried about me and she put a blanket around me . . . and and then ah . . . just then when I woke up I was--they--they had just put me to bed--they put me in a sleeping bag and it--it felt so good to sleep (laughs) it was weird (laughs) and that was it I think I can't . . . cuz I just woke up then when (laughs) that was happening. Uh--ok—-just a second let me sort out everything. Uh. . . it was at my house and I was home . . . all alone and . . . it--there was a big storm--a big thunder storm . . . and it--it was really, really windy . . and then I got scared cu: I thought there was going to be a tornado . and I . . . and I wentchnn1in the--in the basement and I was all by myself --I was really scared . . . an' I was crying and stuff . . . and then . after a little while my parents came home . . . and they came down and got me and they asked me what was the matter and I told them I was scared becuz' of the storm and they kept saying, "what storm? What storm?” I said that it was raining and it was really windy and . . . and I was scared so I went down in the basement and they said, "well it was raining a little but there wasn't any wind--there wasn't any problem," they--they had come home from work and . . . they thought I was crazy . . . (laugh) and . . . 1 said that there was a big storm . . . that's all I can remember I just kept insisting that there was a stonn (laughs) . . . I think that's it. Subject #7 Yeah, um . . . um . . . they had something to do with . . . some store . . . and, this one guy he said that he was like a . . . a security guard, . . . and I went back and I was trying to find out what I could 54 . and then all of a sudden (4 sec) there were these little kids and they kept on watching T.V., I mean waiting for their parents, but then, they got a call over the intercom to . . . go and do something? And then that guy turned out to be the cop . . . but he had died or something before . . . so that's about it. Huh (4 sec) Oh let me see (4 sec) I know I dreamed of something but I can't remember. Ok, ok, like um, are you the one that has called me all week? All right like Monday I didn't remember you know? But after I hung up with you I remembered. DO you want to know that? Oh ok all right it was--um . . . I was still in high school and . . . this one kid was con- ducting a band or something. This one girl was putting on a show . and she just kept on going on and on . . . someone (unclear) I warned her about quitting and stuff and she wouldn't and then . . . all of a sudden all the instruments turned to pineapple or something, I don't know . or something like that. But I don't remember one from this morning yet. Oh,--let me think (4 sec) oh . . . I really can't remember any. Oh let me think (3 sec) um . . . it had something to do . . . it was a place like the lounge--a lounge in one of the dorms, you know, one of those big places? And . . . I remember we were going to have a party there or something? and this one record kept on playing and I don't even know what record it was . . . and I mean there were all these people there and (4 sec) I don't know it was just really strange . . . I don't know how to explain it. Mostly it was just a bunch of people at that . . . one party in that um . . . at a lounge and this one record kept on playing over and over and over again . . . and my mom was even sitting across the way 55 . . and this one other lady was . . . they're her friends . . . and . oh . . . I can't think of anything else. Oh . . . yeah . . . oh let me think a minute (3 see) it had something to do with getting a report card or something? . . . And . . . oh . . . I can't--just a minute (6 sec) oh I know it had to do with that much, but I'm not sure what else . . . um, like every morning after I get done talking to you and I . . . I sometimes remember 'em. Oh . . . let me see . . . I'm awake . . . this morning but I didn't have that much of a dream hmm (5 sec). No, I can't remember anything. Oh--1et me see . . . now I know I dreamt . . . 333 . . . it's the thing of remembering--I--god! . . . I never can remember 'em in the morning. . yeah I had . . . well I had dreams about getting a lot of really weird phone calls . . . and . . . um . . . I remember most of it was just a bunch of mumble jumble and I can't really remember specifics . . and that's about all. . huh-um (30 sec) Oh, let's see . . . I can't think . . . I hate this! Subject #8 Um, I dreamed about, I dreamed about grocery shopping, and I dreamed about goin' on vacation to Africa and I believe that's it. Um, (laughs) this is really funny--I dreamed about who you were (laughs) and I dreamed about a baseball game. Uh-huh and . . . that's about all I can remember. (laugh) yeah I can't think of any. No, I can't remember, um, I'm trying' to think ah . . . I can't remember what I dreamed last night. 56 Um ok I dreamed about going home. And I dreamed about spring break going to Florida and I dreamed about an old friend. And, that's it. Um, let's see um . . . ok I dreamed of like um . . . like a future job . . . um . . . oh let me think (sigh) . . . ok I dreamed about, you know, an old friend again . . . let me think (7 sec) gosh, I can't think of anything else. Um . . . ok um . . . you know recently I been I . . . been um dreaming about this old friend that I keep saying? Ok um . . . well, I had a dream about 33m again-—it'szaguy and . . . it's . . . it was like I--I really wanted to see him and I haven't seen him in like a long time like about a year and um . . . I dreamt I dreamt that I saw him and I dreamt that things . . . did not go you know very well . . . and um like we didn't even get along as friends anymore . And um . . . and also I um I just changed my major (laughs) um . ta' marketing um . . . and um . . . um . . . I guess that's-—I guess I just went through the process again . . . just had . . . I guess it just went a little better I guess I had a hard time with it when I did it here um, and that's about it. Well I haven't been in bed very long (laughs) and I haven't had any dreams. Um . . . yeah . . . again, I didn't have much sleep (laughs) um . . . I had a really--I have a really big test today so I went to bed really late but um . . . what I did--I worked last night I work at the Big Boy and usually it seems when I get back from work I'm really flustered so what I dreamed about last night was um . . . um . . . work, and then it 57 seems like um . . . my my test . . . you know I'm studying for a test in humanities and . . . seems like I was back in those days (laughs) you know? Um, . . . whereas . . . I'd have like seems . . . from like what I had just studied . . . and . . . but about . . . and about work . . . um . . . I have to ask . . . the boss about working . . . in the summer, a--and . . . I dreamed that I asked him last night and he said it was all right . . . and . . . I was really glad because like that means I can stay here this summer and go to school and work here . . . the same so it was like . . . I dreamed about work and then . . . (laughs) flashes form my humanities test today. Um . . . (laughs) ah, let's see . . . I dreamed that my suitemate and I ah we wanted to go to Florida for spring break and we didn't have a ride down so we put our name on the ride board? And like um there was like 50 other million people that wanted a ride too and like the day before um spring break was over we got a--this phone call . . . this girl said that_§hg . . . and a friend of hers were . . . going to Florida and wanted us to know if we still were interested in riding down . . . and-- and we said ah, "oh yeah, yeah--sure!” You know and we um . . . um called our parents and told 'em that we were going down to Florida with these people and they weren't very happy but anyways we left the next day . and um . . . and um . . . it was this guy and this girl . . . and . I don't know they . . . it seemed like they were . . . you know had some . . . in some trouble or somethin' but . . . anyways we were just so excited cuz we wanted to get down there . . . my grandparents had . . . have a trailer down there so we were . . . heading for the St. Petersburg area so we got down there . . . and like we stopped at this rest area 58 like um--I think it was in Georgia just right before we got to Florida and um . . . we . . . like we got separated somehow in the rest area like we like Ann and I were waiting there like fOr £33 hours cuz we just didn't have any idea where they went. No, Ann's my suitemate . . . and um . . . so um . . .tflun1they came back--finally after two hours and . . . and we asked a couple questions, but you know they didn't say anything they were very evasive to what happened and so--um . . . let's see what happened then--um . . . ok so then . . . yeah we got back . . . we got into Florida finally and um they dropped us off . . . at St. Petersburg but they told us that they would be in touch with us . . . you know about going back which would be like in a week or a week and a half becuz um--vacation's only a week and a half . . . so um--we stayed at my grandparents . . . um . . . and then for awhile they they have a tent and they--let us camp 3339--in the area for awhile because you know . . . we felt that . . . we were staying too much with them . . . and then um . . . I guess in the meantime they'd been callin' my grandparents' like everyday . . . and they never left a number . where they were . . . 50, um . . . I don't know, in the meantime Anne and I had a really good time we were . . . swimmin' and stuff like that and we never . . . we never got ahold of them until um like the next to the last day and . . . and . . . because we were at my grandmother's and they called . . . and they just sounded like something was really weird was gonna' happen and then um . . . so they came to get us . . . on the day . . . that we had planned to leave . . . and . . . we were——we were riding back and then the phone rang. 59 Um (laughs) this is really bad-~I just had two little short ones last night um . . . I dreamed--well, my sister bought a new car and I dreamed that on the test run I smashed it all up. And um . . . I dreamed that a bunch of my friends we went to Russia . . . and um . . . I--I don't remember any detail about that . . . but I just--that's all I remember. Subject #9 Hello, yea, um,tmu yea. OK. I'm rushing to be a little sister for a fraternity for this term. I dreamed of what I'm going to tonight, and I dreamed about what would happen tonight, but it happened last night. Pause, I can't remember, I was having a dream when I woke up, but I can't remember it now. Good Morning, this is Sue. Yea. I had a really strange one last night. But, it might of been, I'll tell you this, I slept really bad. It was, it was my little sister and I, we were like in this lake, and um, she was like bringing me things, and like, they weren't like normal size. Like she was bringing me shoes, and they were like really, really miniature, like you could barely see them. And like she just kept bringing me all these things and I kept putting them on this deck, and piling them up; and then we just got up and walked away. It was really weird hum. Good Morning. Yea. Um, yea, ok, one I can remember, it was about taking my accounting test that I have to take today. I was partying last night, it was a guilt dream. Hello, yea, hi. Not that I can remember but . Hello, hi, yea. I had the shoes dream again! A bunch of us, my friends, were all at Dooley's dancing. Then, all of a sudden, the whole place was empty, and I was by myself on the dance floor. It was really strange. 60 Hello, yea. Yea, yea, um, Ok. I had a dream I was swimming. 0k, and um I was just like, I was just like swimmin' and goin' out to sea. (laugh) This was really weird. But, you couldn't see any shore or any- thing. That's all, it was pretty stupid. I had another dream for you from last night. I'm sorry about that, I was calling home about a financial emergency and my parents were out of the country, so I had to go home. Ok, she said to just like keep track of what had happened you know. Ok, um I had this dream and um, we were like walkin' on this road and I was with my two sisters. That's who I went home to see. Um, we were walkin' on this one road and it was like it went from like country to city, immediately. It was really nothin' like a read. And um, we got into the city, and it was just like really strange, like there was all kinds of stuff happenin' around; and all we did was watch. You know, like we watched people fighting, and um, there was little kids playing and stuff like that. Then that was all, we just kept walkin'. Hello, hi. Um, um. Yea. Ok, I had one where we were playin' a baseball game, (I went to a baseball game last night. I just, I usually dream about things that happened to me the night before). And, we won. And um it was really strange because the other team that we were playin', they weren't people. They were like, well on the bottom they were like people and on the t0p they had really weird faces. Well like, I don't know like they were like defermed or somethin'. I don't know how to describe em. (laugh) Really strange. But um, I thought it was really weird too because like the team I was on, I didn't know anybody on it. It was kind of a bummer, because like, they had really strange faces. 61 Hello, hi, um, um, (pause). Not that I can remember right now. Hello, um, um. Yea, um. I had a really weird one like about a disaster. Ok, we were in this building and ah we were sitting around we were having like a business conference, and I wasn't with anyone I could recognize or anything. And ah, like the sky, we could see out, and it was just lookin' really, really bad, and like one lady came in I guess she was the secretary. She told one of the guys that there was like this really bad storm coming, so we best consider going down to the basement, and so we went down there. And um, I don't know it was really strange cause like we just sat around in the basement and water was fillin' up around our feet and stuff. And we couldn't like hear anything, we just sat down there talking. We couldn't like hear the storm or anything. But then, everybody started talking about all this stuff about that um, about the whole world was gonna go and all this stuff. He came running by and he started yelling all this stuff to us, it was really weird, and that's all I can remember. I don't know I guess it was like you know, weird. And um, we just sat there, and we didn't do anything about it. Pretty weird huh. Hello, um um. Um, um. Um, not that I can remember, I was up at 7:00, and I was trying to think of em, and I can't remember any of em. Subject #10 Let me think just a minute. There was one where I was being chased over a mountain by lizards, and they kept on crumbling. They kept setting Off rock slides. Ah (pause). One where I was going into my girlfriend's high school, I had never been there before. She took me into this study lounge, (can't make out a few words) place. We sat down at a table Ah, (pause). 62 There was one where I went over to my roommate's brother's at his house. I had to take something down to his house that he had forgot. We started climbing around on a big Jungle Jim like thing. Ah, swinging in the air and stuff, ah (pause). That's about it. There were a couple other ones. It was strange because, ah, I'd have a dream and then I'd wake up or something and try to remember it, and then go back asleep and have another one. Two small ones; just one that was about a race, um a car race and I don't even, it was just a quick one. And then one about just a foot race that was really, and then, I woke up and I thought you hadn't called and so I layed over and went back asleep; I dreamt that this whole thing was a hoax. And then (pause) and then you called and then we were going to have a cocktail party, and then we could invite some friends and we went and we had some friends get together and then we just talked it over or something. And we were going to go on a hayride, we went on a cross- country ski trip (pause) and I broke my ski cause my brother stepped on it, and ah then I came back and we found out that the whole thing was a hoax. We didn't get any credits and she didn't even tell us why. Boy was that a nightmare. Yea, I had this one where I went to Florida to visit my cousins, I think we were hiking. I guess we walked or we got a ride or something to get down there and we just went down to say Hi or something. We were coming right back just drive down and come right back. And then when we were in this place when we were on our way back and then three guys tried to jump us or something, but I don't know; I punched one of them in the nose and he started laughing. And we started talking and we got together. 63 They took us to this big like big house, it was like a, it reminds me of something out of Young Frankenstein. And it was really nice, ah really clean and stuff, and a lot of mysterious things around. And we got stuck and we couldn't get out and finally we found our way out and um that's the last thing I remember, we got out and we were back, back on our big high- way, hitching home. Yea, it will take me a minute to recollect it, (long pause). Oh I had one but I can't remember it at all. Um not any big ones, it was just sort of, I remember the idea of a conflict somewhere. Some type of game or competition, but that was it. And yesterday, I didn't remember anything about it. I was trying to think about it all day yesterday, and I didn't come up with anything. Ah, just, ah it just, it was like the one last week. I think it was sort of like a college bowl, it was some sort of competition. It was like, I can't you know, get a handle on it. It seemed to be, be something like there, are familiar with the college bowl thing that's going on? It was something like that. That's all I remember. Oh boy, yea, I remember being over at a girls' dorm or something. There was someone there who was collecting money for something. My brother and I were meeting all sorts of people somewhere. I think I remember that it was some kind of game show. Ah no not really, I did have a dream but I can't remember it now. Subject #11 One, just being in a big building such as like maybe the auditorium and um, taking some sort of test, um (pause) let's see, I can't remember, just parts of things. Lots of stuff, um, I was like this is probably the 64 best time to call me, if you keep calling me at this time, yea because I have to leave by 8:00 a.m. First one, I was on a bicycle with a friend of mine, showing around the town where I grew up, and we ran into a friend of mine, he was telling us about, about his trip to Europe and was drawing a map of it in his bathtub. She was outside. Um and, she had, she had (bad recording) and um, then we saw um a friend of Paul's go by in a car. And I thought we could go catch up with him so we got into our car and we went over to get gas. And we saw this old man standing on the side of the road and he looked like he was having trouble his hand's were tied, and there was some grass on fire around him. So we stopped and helped him. And as it turned out, he had a little, um, road side booth where he was selling trinkets, I guess it . . . hot pads and washclothes and things. Um, but then I was in a car with another friend of mine, um. All I can remember, we were getting ready to go on a trip, and we had washed her car and there were soap suds all over on the inside of her car, and um, she had on a real pretty scarf. I, I, remembered that. And before we left on our trip, we stopped at this party store and bought a bunch of cookies, I guess that's about it. I just woke up so I have to think for a minute, um let's see. I was, there's something about, about a like cabin, it had all the paint scratched off. All the paint was ripped off of it. I don't know, apparently I was there by myself. Um, um ok, another dream about (pause) I came home at my parent's house, um it was like a holiday or something like that. A lot of my friends were home. Um, um. My old boyfriend was there, um, he kept calling me at real weird hours in the morning (laugh). Ah, oh yes. Then 65 I was standing on the sun porch of my house smoking a joint, and my mother was getting a little uptight, you know, about that. Um, and then there was something about some holiday like Christmas or something. There were all sorts of greeting cards or whatever. Let's see, that's about all. Yep I did, I dreamed I was, let's see, I was with three friends, and we were someplace way out in the country, in a big open area. It wasn't like a tourist area, because very few people knew about it. There was a big, high swimming pool, and um, you had to reach up and hang on to this thing to get into it. There was a wooden frame that divided the pool into two different parts. We could see that there were two different sides. On the other side of the frame was a whole different world. One of my friends, she got under the wooden frame, underneath the water, and it was like, like this whole other world. It was really beautiful. There were all kinds of things going on. People skating and dancing, and um, it was really beautiful. Apparently I had been there before and I was taking some of my friends through there again, and I was trying to dis, discourage one of my friends, one of my other friends from coming under there with all those people. And oh when we did get down there, I ran into a friend, and I talked to her for a little while. I was really surprised to see this friend there. (pause) That's it I guess. Yep, well let's see. What I was dreaming about was um, um, registering at night and most of it was outdoors. There was one point in the dream where I was in this class and this other woman and I were on this skate- board. Um, then, and someone stole my bicycle and my purse, and my sweater, and I was chasing them down. (Sniff) um, let's see, anything else. (pause) It's been funny because everytime you call and then you 66 hang up, I remember mine. 0k, and one I remembered yesterday's dream right after I got off the phone. It really wasn't a whole lot, it was just like a section Of a dream. Do you want me to tell you that one? I dreamed that I lived in California with a friend, and um, she had impetigo all over her face. And she was getting ready to go on a trip, and I was helping her with all her packing, and getting her ready, and she was playing different parts of different movies. That's all I remember. Um let's see if I can remember. Um, it seems like I had, I was um going on a trip um I was getting ready to go because it was a really quick decision to go and um I had to really hurry and pack. And apparently I was living in this kind of a big boarding house and there were all sorts of other people living in the house. And they had to run upstairs and get my clothes and stuff as if I had never been up there before. And my clothes, all my stuff was up there, and I got up there and the stairs were all winding, and I got all my stuff. And I got my friend Paul, he was going with me and, his old girlfriend was there. And, let's see. And we, and after we were getting ready to leave we noticed that that the bus already left. But, um, the police went by and I flagged him down and he went with us and flagged the bus down. Um let's see, (pause), hum, (pause) I can remember the rest. I have started writing it down when I remember it. Like I know yesterday I was sort of drowsy. Like I remember yesterday I was sort of conscious, but I was dreaming and it was like there was this voice kept talking to me, you know? And I kept having to talk to myself so I wouldn't hear the voice. You know, I just talked to myself. And at the same time I could hear the people next door, and I could hear their own telephone ringing. And um, apparently this voice was telling me about the telephone ringing. And um, and when 67 I got up to let's see, and then then there was a sound like someone was knocking on the door. And I got up to look, you know in my dream. The knocking was happening and slowly the door was opening and all I saw was a fist. So I ran into the bathroom and locked the door because I was really scared. I remember that the voice was really unusual though. That's all I remember about that. Hello, um, no I didn't, I do remember something about fixing pipes. Slept: Good, when I was sleeping, but I had a hard time getting to sleep. Subject #12 Hello, this is Tim, hi. (laugh) ah yea, yea. (laugh) They're pretty strange. Um I guess, uh. I feel pretty stupid telling them. Ummm. What I dreamt, that I had to go to the bathroom, (laugh) so I got up and I walked into this really big room. It was a really large bathroom and um, the next thing I woke up and I had to go to the bathroom. So ah, and let's see. I had a couple dreams and I knew I was going to have to tell them this morning you know, so I kept on saying them over to myself, but, I got a few. Um, (pause) (laugh) I had this really strange dream. (laugh) That I was down in the grill (laugh) and I was sitting with this girl. This guy walked up to the grill and he didn't have any clothes on (laugh) and I just looked at, ah, Jamie and started laughing. You know, and then all of a sudden, you know, I noticed that he had an erection. (laugh) and I just looked at her and we started cracking up, and he just walked by and then that was pretty weird. Um that was real weird (laugh) um gee oh and then I just had a dream, now about this very thing right here. 3. I had a dream that I got up at 1:30 in the morning for this telephone call and I was eating a plate of spaghetti, that my mother fixed me fOr breakfast. And um, I, I had this, this sheet, and a this test was 68 coming on over T.V. and it asked me my favorite book um, my favorite number, my student number (pause) um, and then this giant pig came along and I just swatted it with my hand. It just happened a few minutes ago, and (pause) ah and it's really and then right before that 4. I had gotten up and it was quarter to 6 and my friend came over and he wanted to get high. And I told him no way, and he wanted me to roll him a joint, and I told him to forget it, and that was about the end of that. No that was a dream. No that wasn't no I don't get high. That's about, yea, I think I had a more than that but I just couldn't remember them. Yea, sure. What time is it: Ok that's a good time. Um well you could probably call me about 10 after 8 if that's possible. 0k, see you tomorrow. Bye, (laugh). Good morning, hi, yea, ah geez no, I know I did, but see, just when I wake up. Like after I get up for an hour or so I start making associa- tions with objects like what I see and that brings back my dreams. But, right now I can't remember. Um, like if I remember from today, could I tell you tomorrow? Yea, that would be a good idea. Like a lot of times I'll be standing in the shower and I'll see something and that will pop into my head. Ok. Slept: yea, really well, what time is it? Oh God! It goes too quick. Yea um let me see. First of all, I remembered yesterday's. Um let's see, some of these dreams you know like they're in pieces, 1. But I dreamt that, I dreamt a story almost out of the Free Press. And um I remember it was out of the feature page. And ah, it was a story about this woman that had two children and for some reason she had left her husband and she went to live with another person, another guy. And then for some reason, she had to, she had to go back to her original husband. And, and I don't, I 69 don't know, it didn't make too much sense to me, but for one minute, I think I was the person she left. 2. And then um in this other dream, I saw this photograph of this girl I know, it was just a closeup photograph of her face, and then another girl came up to me and she asked me, um, how come she couldn't take pictures that good because, her camera was blurring all the time, and so she wanted to know if she could use my camera. So I said yea, and that's about it for last night. Slept: really good, I always sleep good. Um, I really can't remember right now because, but I did dream a lot, yes because I know I did dream a lot. Ok. Hello, hi. Um, well from the night before, I couldn't remember any- thing. Geez, I'm going downhill. Um, and tonight I can't remember any- thing either. How are other people doing? I don't know, usually I can remember my dreams. Well, might be. Slept: great (laugh) bye. Ah, hello yea. Um, I just had one, it was kind of strange. I dreamt that I was in London, and ah, let me see, and I was walking around with this girl I knew. First of all, there was like a murder, wait, now I'm starting to remember it. Ok, I'll tell you first one part. Well I just remember that I was in this park and all of a sudden these two horses went by. And one had ah John Lennon and Paul McCartney on it. And they were really huge horses and ah, they told me to jump on. But, they were so high, that I couldn't jump on. And right now. I was just trying to jump on as you know. And before that I dreamt that um I don't know it was kind of I experienced some mystery murder plot or something, like on T.V. It had a couple underwater scenes. And the police were there. I can't really describe it. It was kind of abstract. That's about it. Slept: really good. 70 Hello, hi, hi, um, (pause) oh geez, um! I can't remember, I'm doing terrible. What time is it? That's good. Slept: um terrific. I just went to bed at 4:00 a.m. Yeah, have a good weekend, bye. Yea that's Ok. I tried to call you back but no one was home. Oh, yea I did. Um, they were pretty strange. I dreamt that, are you writing this down? Oh, oh I see. Um, well I had this dream, but I don't know if it was me or someone else. But, I saw a person and this person had a bowling ball in his hand, and he was standing on this deck and like the dock, it was in it went straight and then it, um it ah, it jutted to the right. So it was like a right angle and, ah, when this person bowled down it went straight down the dock until it came to the point where it curved right, and then it hit a mirror and then it reflected it down to the right and it hit some bowling pins. And I don't know, I watched a couple frames of that, and that was about it. And then I dreamt that I don't know if it was me or someone else, someone else was in this truck or something and we weren't paying attention to the road, and we, we flew off the road and we, ah, we crashed. But, we were Ok. Um, I think I saw myself knocked out by a tree, and this person came up and asked me if I was all right. (pause) and I was 0k, um God. And then I had another one that I, I remember now (whisper) I wish I could remember it. Slept: Um really, was last night Sunday night? Oh good, I was really tired.’ Yea. Hello, ah yea, um let's see, I dreamt that I was driving in a car with some friends of mine from high school. And it was kinda of like back in high school. And we were driving around, and ah, I remember ah, someone was making a comment about how much gas the car ate. And ah, then I remember us getting stuck and oh, we had to get out and push. And I 71 remember this one person, um, in my dream, that was a friend of mine, that I remember telling him to take it easy you know, he was really a fat per- son, because I thought maybe you know, he could have a heart attack or something. And well it was kinda strange because this person um, was killed ah, this fall. So I can, I don't know why I thought that. But anyways and anyways, he was killed when a car fell on top of him too, I remember. In the dream um, he was pushing, you know, and he was really close to being under the car, and I was telling him to be careful. But he was, uh, and ah, that was about the only one I can remember. I know I had others but, like I woke up in the middle oftlmanight and I knew that dream, and it was real good. Slept: oh good, I got up at 6:30 and then I went to breakfast and that's why I wasn't there Ok, we'll see you. Hi, yea I called you back twice, you were sleeping, sure. Yea caught ya. And then I called you again and you were out to eat. Ready, ok well, I had two dreams and I remembered them both in the shower this morning, and then when I went back to call you I had forgotten one of them. So I only have one to do. It was kind of a strange dream, um, I dreamt that, um for some reason my brother was in the dream and, and we were going to go skiing or somethin' like a long underwear top on and ah, then someone said, well did you get all the equipment in the car? And from that scene it was really weird and then I popped right into the State Discount. And everyone at State Discount was wearing all the employees were wearing black and white, and the ah, entire store was white. And I walked up to this girl, and I recognized her, she was ah, this girl I, I knew from like high school and like grade school, and it was Kathy Arrow and like during high schoolznnlstuff. We were always real good friends, we used to go out 72 a little. And ah, I like I've lost contact with her and I really wanted to get in contact with her cause she goes to Central and I go here. And, then she really hurt my feelings because she said to me, "all you are is well first of all, I'm an Art major you know? And what I do is I do really like real detailed pencil drawings you know? And she goes, all you are is just a, a, cut dry pencil drawer," or something like that, you know. I just remember feeling really put down in the dream. That's about it. Slept: Fine, the other one was really strange and I really wanted to tell you but, I just forgot it. Hello, hi, um geez, I can't remember right now. What time is it. Oh geez my alarm didn't go off. Slept: Oh, fantastic. Bye. Hello, yea I did. It was either last night or the night before. I dreamt I was with some friends, and we were going skiing, but there was hardly any snow because it was really warm outside. Well I remember that it was weird because my friends were skiing on the grass. And then last night I had a dream about this girl that was coming up to see me this weekend from Central. Well she came up. Sometime I think this girl is not too smart. I mean intelligence wise, you know what I mean. Well we're in the cafeteria upstairs, and she picked up a tray, and was putting stuff on it and she put a glass on her tray, but she didn't know what to do with the glass. I was just standing there, looking at her face and looking her up and down, checking her body. Slept: I slept really good, I went to bed really late. Subject #13 Hello, hi. Yea this is Bob. How are you? Um, yea, listen there's something I wanted to know. Like ah I usually, you know get up and then 73 like I really can't put all this together, you see. 15 there any way like we could call you, um, yea. Like the first night I had, the only thing I could remember was about having something to do with the testing of the ah, it had something to do with the testing er, in the room, you know? At this table of some sort. Slept: Great! Bye, bye. Hello, hi. Um, um, um, I don't know what's wrong with me (laugh) Um, it might be because I went to bed late, I don't know. But, no I didn't have any. Slept: Fine. Bye, bye. Hello, hello, yea. Hi, ah, not that I can recall, but I wanted to tell you about two nights ago, I mean um, you know, Saturday night. Um, I had one about my ah, roommate's folks just bringing ah, doing a special favor for me of some sort. And um, for some reason I'm calling them on the phone. It was a short dream. And um, just after you called, I went back to sleep. And um, I don't even know if it was a real dream because you know, like sometimes you can force a dream like. Like you set up all the characters and stuff. And I don't know if I did that or not. And um, but it was about a card game. Slept: Oh, fine, bye bye. Hello, hi. No I didn't, didn't dream last night. Slept: Fine. Ok, bye. Hello, hi. Um, ah, not that I remember right now. (laugh) Um, but one thing I do want to tell you, um, um, last night, I mean um, not last night, two nights ago. Well, after you called yesterday I went back to sleep, and I had a little dream right after that. Um, yea it was about um, two gerbils, and one was really big, about um, about the size of a shoe- box. Pause. And it took place I guess in my house. You know, where I usually live. Pause. And I guess that's about it. Slept: Oh nice. Ok, take it easy. 74 Hello, hi, um, um. No, I'm having the worst time. (laugh) Slept: Ok, ok, bye. Hello, yea. Hi, no um, I wanted to know, um if um, you know, the ah, who the main tester is? Ok. No, yea I wanted to ask her. You know. All right. Well cause I was like remembering em, until I went to see her. You know, and then, um, um. Ok. Slept: Ok. Hello, hello, hello, hi. Um, um, um, can I call you back? Ok, Ok. All right ok, bye, bye. Called back: Well, I really don't know what to say, because I didn't dream at all. You know, I was thinking about it for a while and, you know, try to think of what I was thinking about, and I didn't come up with anything. I guess I just didn't dream. Slept: Pretty well, actually I came in pretty late, so I was pretty tired too. (laugh) Yea. Yea, ok, thanks for the wake up service. Bye. Subject #14 My dream, laughed, wow, my dream, (long pause) I forgot everything, I was just thinking about it too when the phone rang, I just can't think of it. Slept: I mean comfortable, restless, light, deep, rested. Oh I had a hard time falling asleep but hard, I mean I'm still really tired now. (laugh) Um, oh yea, I have a dream for you, (laugh) um, it was really weird, (laugh) ah, let's see, this is about my brother, my oldest, next to oldest brother, he was in charge of the farm when my parents were down in Florida and (laugh), ah let me see, ah, let me see, it started out he was really mad because my brother and sister were late getting to work down at the farm milking cows and (laugh) (these guys) see everybody's up around here and laughing at me, (laugh), and anyhow he was really mad at them because, because they were late getting out there and he came up to the house to 75 get em you know and he was really mad and I was just standing there in the kitchen saying oh my gosh this is him you know and (pause) another sister of mine was there in the kitchen too, she was saying. Well you haven't been doing what you're suppose to and all this stuff, you know and I sure and so (laugh), it was! (Talking to roommates at this point.) And so anyhow then it went to like later after my parents got back and and then my brother was explaining all the trouble he went through and all this stuff and all he went through when stuff broke down, getting parts and stuff and he was talking about this one place he went and when he got there the place wasn't there anymore, (laugh) it was really weird, he was looking for a rake and I don't know what for, then he was talking about some door- knobs he got, (laugh). It didn't make too much sense, (laugh) that was really weird. Slept: How'd I sleep? Good, yea, well, except, I woke up about, about a little bit before six or something like that and I couldn't get to sleep, ah I got a dream, I remember a dream from yesterday too though, Oh yea, do you want me to tell you. I remembered after you hung up, um, let's see it was about this computer class that I'm suppose to have um, suppose to be taking some time I don't know when but anyhow see, I had this other computer class that I that I ah took and I found out that it doesn't fulfill my require- ments so I had to have a different one instead and I was really mad about it, you know so I had dreamt that that I um, I was like too or three weeks into the course and I looked on my schedule card and found out that there was another hour and week that I was suppose to go for this thing that I was missing every week and I was really mad because I was going to flunk the class and have to take it all over again, (laugh), three times for one, for one requirement, you know, I was really mad. 76 Um, I've been dreaming about all kinds of stuff, nothing that makes any sense, ah just a bunch of I don't know, (laugh), I didn't dream about anything in particular, um, let me think, um, (long pause), I'm trying to think of one but I was woke up by the phone, (laughs) yesterday I was up, so would you call me later? Later, um I don't know, I went to bed really late, and I got, I don't know, I can't remember any good dreams that I had, you know, it was a lot of stuff that I just, my mind was just like floating around between certain things like I don't know, a lot of it had to do with like ah puritans and stuff, cuz like, (laughs) I was reading ah the Scarlet Letter before I went to bed, but some of the stuff had to do with that, some of it had to do with like people up here and stuff but, I can't remember anything, any like definite things that happened. You know, it was just like fooling around with different ideas and things, I don't know. I didn't have really good dreams this morning yet. I'll go back to bed and then I'll start dreaming. (laughs) Slept: Good, I don't know, sound alseep, (laughs) probably because I didn't go to bed til what 2:30, something like that. Um let me see, oh yea, yea I did have a dream, ah, laughed, it wasn't very much, (laughed), very short, I got woke up by the alann, um, anyhow, I didn't remember too much, I didn't go to bed til three, so laughed um since I don't remember too much from last night 'cept the only thing that I remember was right before the alarm went off was, was like um, my suite- mate and I were sitting here and studying you know, listening to the radio and a song came on, (laughed) and (is this your dream?) Yea, yea and (laughed) we both started singing this song you know, like we always do, cuz whenever, whenever we're studying we sing songs together we both like and stuff and (laughed) and then we both, it, it was a love song so, you 77 know, it was kind of queer, you know, we just started laughing and cracking up and then the alarm went off, (laughed) so it wasn't too exciting, you know, (laughed) it was just like what I do when I'm awake, you know. How'd you sleep? Ah, very very bad (laughs), I was dead to the world. Ah, I don't think I, I don't remember if I dreamt (laughed) I don't know um, pause, all I remember is um, well my suitemate and me were at this party and um there's this guy from the dorm that ah (laughed), she kinda um likes (laughed) and I can remember that I was talking to him and stuff, you know for my suitemate, (laughed) and anyhow I was talking to him and by the end of the party this guy, he started to like me, instead, (laughs) and I felt really bad, you know, cuz I was talking to him for my suitemate, that's about all I can remember. Slept: Um, good. Um, um shoot, I can't think of nothing, anything of, out of the ordinary, (laughs), um I can't think ah, shoot, I just, I just slept good, I can't think of nothing, oh shoot, oh well. Ah, let's see, um let me see, I don't have any good stories, but I studied for a while in my sleep, (laughs), its exhausting, (laughs), ah I'm tired, I have a paper to write and I was up forever trying to get it done. Let me see and, oh, I milked some cows in my sleep last night too, (laughs), I, I had a completely exhausting night. Um, let me see, (laughs), let me see, I dreamed all kinda things last night um, I (mumbled something), I went to bed really late again last night so ah, I really I didn't get into any really good stories so just a lot of doing things, (laughs), um, I remember um images of ballet, see I went to a ballet last night too, (laughs), um, let me see, ah that was it. Oh, good, I'm going to go back and sleep somemore right now. (laughs) 78 I finally got eight hours of sleep last night that's why you know, (laughs) um but I don't know I just slept, slept and I can't remember any dreams, I remember having a dream and I think it must have been like right after I went to sleep last night because like, you know long time before I got up, you know, and, and I remember it had something to do with home, but I can't, can't, remember what it was or nothing, I just slept and slept and enjoyed it last night, (laughs), I had about eight hours, like before I kept getting four. Um, let's see, laughs, um, oh, yea, I dreamt about um meeting some new guy or something, well see, we're gonna, we're getting invited to ah a special dinner by, by a floor, on the east side, so I just dreamt about meeting some new guy or something, you know. (laughs), I don't remember nothing about it. Slept: Good. Subject #15 I didn't have one that I can recall. You know, is that what this is going to consist of, I mean phone calls every morning like this, what if I can't remember my dreams, like just now, you know, I didn't sleep too well last night, had a hard time falling asleep, will you be calling at the same time every morning this is a good time for me. I just can't remember, I can only remember that I wanted to dream, but I can't remember one. Also I didn't sleep well again last night. I only remember like the last part of the dream, do you want me to tell you about it? Ok, um, it was summertime and I was packing to leave the apartment. That's all I remember out of it and it was a very restless night again. Yea, I think I did, but I don't know what, I can't remember, you know, exactly how they go or anything, ok, I just woke up, let me think for a 79 sec, ah, ok, ah, usually most my dreams I was with this guy that I broke up with nine months ago and like we were at a boat show, (pause) and um another (pause) oh, it was, it was in color, I know that (laughed), if that makes any difference and I don't know, it was, it was like a pointless dream, I remember about the boat show and we were kept walking around and we kept separating and I kept looking for him and I kept thinking that he was gone, and all the time ah I ended up finding him again you know behind some boat or something and that's about all I can remember. Um, he had a workshirt on, a shirt from where he works and it was red and I remember seeing it. Slept: A lot better. Um, I remember I dreamt, I know I dreamt, but I can't remember what it is, cuz I remember turning over saying that I have to remember to tell you this and I can't remember what it is though. Slept: Um, real good. Yes I did, um, long pause, I'll try, I'm having a really hard time trying to remember what I dreamt. I got up earlier so I could think of it before you called, I fell back asleep, ah, (long pause), I just can't think of what it is now. If I think of it, do you want me to tell you tomorrow, like what (yea, if you can remember it by tomorrow when I call, you can tell me then, 0k) real good. Slept: Ah, very well. As soon as I woke up, I wrote them down so I wouldn't forget em. Ok first of all it started out like um, I was holding my little nephew and he was crying and all I can remember is that he um, it was like he had a cold or something, we couldn't stop ah, nobody could stop him from crying. The next thing I knew I was running across like ah, it was like a swamp trying to get away from somebody and I was like trying to find small pieces of solid ground to get across it and as soon as 1 get across there were 80 men coming like at me the opposite way and so I saw there were these two other little girls trying to get away, ok got some horses and ah, we started going to this place which was supposedly like a headquarters, as soon as we got in there, closed the door and there were other people in there and whoever was after us, like after everybody else, um, let loose some tigers and lions and the place was made out of like bamboo, had, had holes in it, tigers and lions just prowling around trying to get in, and we thought that we would try to um stop the men by doing something to them and those guys inside there get some bees and poisoned them and, and, we were going to let them loose and have them sting them, but as he was taking the container out to let them outside to go and ah attack the men, he dropped it and all the bees were inside the place with us, so we couldn't go out because there were tigers and we couldn't stay in there because there were the bees, and after that it ah, my dream switched again and I ended up, like it was my ma's and my aunt's, we were having a birthday party for them and my cousin and I which I, I think you call her next, she's in on this, too, we had made shirts, matching shirts for our mothers and we got our names in the paper and that a big article that we made matching shirts and that was it. Slept: Very well. I don't remember this morning, I was up late studying, I didn't have too much sleep, and I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not 0k? Slept: Well, what little I did, it was pretty good. Ok, um, I only remember bits and pieces and one time when I was at home my mom had three boxes of pudding, it was lemon, chocolate, and vanilla and I remember grabbing, I was late for a ride back and I remember just grabbing it, the lemon because my roommate really likes pudding, but I never made it, I just kept carrying it around in my purse and um another 81 time, I'm not sure where we were, if it was a wedding, no it couldn't have been a wedding, it was lots of people we were sitting, off in the audience, there was a whole lot of ah girls and they all looked the same they all had short blonde hair, they were tall and thin, they had no expression on their face, and they'd walk down the ah aisle and when they'd stop, they turned a different color, but the first one that walked down the aisle, like when she stopped, she turned yellow and just everybody started ooing and ahing just like it was you know, the fireworks, I don't know what; you know, the other colors were I just remember the first one, and um another time-- another thing was that um, this guy I've been going with came up here this Friday to get me cuz my grandma died, and that's it, like I really feel bad because I used to have some fantastic dreams; and now, but the thing is there's nothing, I don't know, it's, it's usually like the more sleep I get or the better I feel, um, um, with sleep, the more I remember the dream, like I haven't had more than five or six hours of sleep every time you called, I hOpe I get some really good ones. I can't remember anything, I know I dreamt, um (long pause). Really well, but, sigh, I've been up late again studying, I've had exams really, for the last two weeks, so I'm sure that has something to do with it. Subject #16 Um, you know, do you want names? It doesn't matter, ok, well I dreamed bout my friend named Jerry and I don't know who this young lad was in my dream but ah (smacked lips), we were getting ready, we were waiting for time so that we could go to this basement or something and we was going to take a piss, also as I was ah sleeping I was also dreaming that I wasn't, I hadn't had a dream, you know, and then when I woke up and I 82 was combing my hair then I, you know, it came to me that I had dreamed—- um I slept kind of restless in the beginning. Yea, I dreamed um, I was in a class, I think I, I don't know what kind of class I was in all right that's all I dreamed, I was in a classroom, sitting in a class, that's all. Slept: Pretty good. No, ah, uh, (I asked her if she wrote any dreams down for me from before). No, cause I, I can't remember anything from last night. Slept: Last night, bad pretty rough. (Did you write down your dreams from yesterday?) Yea, I wrote it down do you want it now? Oh, ok, yesterday, let me see, well, that night we went out tozaparty and everything you know, so like I had dreamed about the party which (pause) when I dreamed was a whole different situation, within the party, it was just different completely. You know, then what it really actually happened, and what else, and ah, it was scarey, I had a nightmare, I'll put it that way, but I don't remember, I know it was a nightmare. Cuz it scarred me and I woke up in my sleep. That was the night before. Last night, let me think (long pause) I can't remember, right now, but I know I did dream because I remembered it earlier, when I woke up, but if I recall I'll write it down, ok? Ah, like if I write it down, you all are going to call us next week also, right? Cause I was wondering like, you know, today we're going to see, and I was wondering if I take the written one to her or anything but I'll give the written one to you, so are you calling me tomorrow? Slept: Fine. Ah, what's the dream? I dreamed I was on the beach, (pause) and we had a party, yesterday's dream was ah, I was downstairs in Dee Dee's room and we did some work, that's all I recall, just in her room messing around. Slept: Pretty good. 83 Ah, all I remember is ah, being at a ball, that's all I remember. Slept: Fine. Sigh, don't recall any. Slept: Good. Ah, let me think, what'd I dream about? I remember being at a friend's house it just happened about the summer, and I remember going to a restaurant eating, that's all. Slept: Pretty good. Yea, I dreamed I was in an accident, a car accident me and my friends and we was gone, (laughs) it's just that we was, we died I guess but I woke up, at the time of the thing and then, what else did I dream about? I don't remember after that, I had a lot of dreams, I think but that's the one I remember right now. Slept: Good. Subject #17 Um (long pause), I don't remember right now. Slept: Um, I, I, slept pretty well. Um, no I don't recall, I recall one from yesterday though, it was about cars. How'd you sleep last night? Pretty good. Yea, um Saturday, I dreamed about cars, wait, it was cars, Friday it was shoes and um, I dreamt about ah being at a shoe store trying on shoes and seeing a whole lot of different shoes in boxes. And this morning I didn't dream last night I don't remember, at all. Slept: Ah, pretty well. I can't remember right now. Slept: Um, good. No, ah, huh. Slept: Real good. Um, (pause) wow, no, I can't remember it. Slept: Real good. Yea, I dreamt um, yesterday, that I was, um, in a wedding. (How about last night's dream?) Nothing. Slept: Good. Ah, yea, I dreamt that I was going to a party and ah, I saw a whole lot of apartments and things, that's all 1 can remember. Slept: Real good. 84 Subject #18 Ah, (pause), (laugh). It was really crazy. We were walking, from Akers, and we got lost, some place, by the railroad tracks, then we came to a street that said East Grand River Campus. It was really weird. We didn't know where we were. Um (pause). Then my girlfriend was going to climb on this tower to see where we were. Um, (pause), it was really weird. Uh, and I woke up. I can't remember anything. Ah, (pause), ah, I can't remember what I dreamed last night. It was (pause), ok, (pause), it was (pause), there were four of us. (pause), and was, me and this, three other, friends that live on the floor. We were out on this boat out in the water. And I, think the water was really, really deep. (pause), and there's a picnic table, (pause) out in the middle of the water, and the water was flooded or something, (pause). And there was somebody, with a body, and here we are getting the baby stuff off this picnic table, with this boat and these people. Um, I don't remember how it ended. Let me see (pause). Uh, (pause), he and this girlfriend of mine on the floor went to the Olympics, and we were watching the downhill or something and decided they were gonna run it, again because something happened. And, I didn't have any shoes on so I couldn't go up the chair lift yet. There was a lodge to get my shoes on. This guy, that (pause), like I knew him when I went to grade school, (pause), he was there. He wanted to talk to me and every- thing. And we set around talking and then um, (pause). What happened? . Ha, and that's where it ended. Uh, (pause) I can't remember, I slept really bad last night because, (pause). Like I woke up four or five times during the night and I can 85 remember that I dreamed, but I can't remember what it was that I dreamed about. Ah, (pause), I can't remember any of them. Oh, I know what it was, (pause), I got a leather coat from my boy- friend for Christmas, and he had to take it back, because the color was coming off it. And so in my dream, he got me this new one. (pause). And it was really ugly, and it had like, (pause). You know how they have, those gauze tops and they have those little mirrors sewn into them. Well it had little mirrors into the back of it (pause). All over the back of it. Uh, (pause). Okay, (pause), I have to go and pre—enroll today and I had a dream last night that I went to pre-enroll and didn't get any of my classes. Ah, (pause). Let see, (pause), if I can remember. My roommate and the girl nextdoor and I, (pause) we were in like a big lecture hall. There are all these people. But they were away from us. They were divided away from us. By this big portion. And there were these little people throwing little darts at us. So we were trying to (pause), they were throwing them at my roommate. She was all tied up. So this friend of mine and I we kept deflating all the arrows or the what do you call them? Darts. And I untied my roommate and we were all throwing darts at each other. We got on the bus and we left. And for some reason I keep thinking that were these little people throwing them. For some reason, I keep thinking these little people were little green men. 15 it possible to dream in color? (pause). Because for some reason people have always told me that you couldn't. But I can remember these people, as being little green men, in my dream. And that's all I can remember. 86 Ah, (pause), oh (pause) I know I had a dream. But I can't think of what it was. (pause). Oh (pause). I know what it was. A friend of mine (pause) I was in the women's I.M. for some reason, and a friend of mine, who I haven't seen for a real long time was over there too. And I got to see her finally, because, like I haven't seen her since Christmas. (pause). That's all. Subject #19 Oh, (pause), ah, I can't only remember a part, I really can't put it together. Ah (pause). I was sitting in a house some place in a house with my roommate and there was some animals, rabbits, 1 don't remember what they were. Ah (pause). They were trying to eat each other. Um, they, me and my roommate went to the store. Ah, (pause), and there was red stuffed rabbit. Ah (pause), (laugh), it's funny, there was Santa Claus and I remember, I wanted a candy cane. Ah (pause). And he gave us one. (pause). Oh, that's all I remember. Ah, (pause). I can't put it together. Ok, (pause), let's see, my roommate, had a class, at the I.M. building at night. (pause). And, I, had, I don't know, I went over with her to the I.M. Um, and she didn't want me to wait outside because it, was at night, so she went in and she took us somewhere, (pause), to some room or some- thing, it's like it was, between the pool and the gym. And I was waiting in there for a while, while she was in her class, and it was somebody's office. And while I was waiting this lady comes in and she is the basket- ball coach. (pause) and she is really, and looks like a man, and she starts talking to me about basketball and she is really upset with it, and she tells me all these things and she wants me to go out to shout for it, and everthing, and she (pause) just, keeps talking about it, and she keeps asking me about sports auxleverything, (pause) and (pause) and (pause) 87 I don't know (pause), I finally talk her out of it, and cause she won't leave me alone, and I finally just left, and stuff, because it just kind of, (pause) wasn't very much. That's all, about I can remember. I had um, I don't know, couple other dreams, but I just can't remember them completely. I am, afraid, I didn't have any dreams last night that I can remember. Ah, (pause), I don't know, I can't remember, I, (pause), remember. (pause) I think I had one or something, (pause). A little part. But I can't remember it. I woke up 5 minutes ago and I have been trying to remember but I just can't remember. Ah. (pause). I can't remember. Ah. (pause), okay, (pause) probably a long one. Okay, (pause) um (pause), I was (pause), my cousin and my cousin's wife, (pause), ah . should I tell you their names? Nancy. Ah . . . they are already married and they have been married for a long time. But anyway, Nancy decided she wanted to get married again and they have a Wedding. (pause), a small Wedding and she wanted to get married in Las Vagas in one of the little chapels. So she wanted to go there. So they asked my parents to take them to the airport. 50 we were going to the airport. So we took them to the airport, and we go inside, and (pause), ah, (pause), everything (pause), and . . . uh . . . we were waiting . ... and I don't know. I was sitting. I went with some friends from school and everything, and (pause) I don't know, (pause) we are sitting, (pause) in the terminal but there are a lot more people there (pause). A lot more friends and stuff. My parents and me are sitting down. Over . . . like right down . . . an . . . um . a little ways down from us was a like a main terminal there were . there were a bunch of people there. They were dressed up . . . like stuffed animals like in costumes . . . uh . . . they were all furry and 88 stuffed and they were all furry and, and they were putting on a show for little kids and stuff and one of them had a . . . a beach ball, and one of them came down by where we were sitting and one of them came down after it to get it and like, it came right by where I was sitting. And . . . I had like, an . . . um . . . I was sitting down and like a stuffed animal, like a green dragon that was sitting between my legs on the floor and one of them comes up and he was really, he was like, he was like 20 or some— thing and he came up and my dragon started to bite his arm or something. And it was like a stuffed animal. I don't know, anyway he came over and he was wrestling with us and I don't know he looked at me, as this is really weird. Ah, ah . . . anyways he looked at me, he stared at me for a second and, it's really funny (laugh), he got over and he kissed me and said, ”My Fair Lady," and he went down and there were about six people sitting on the bench with me, and he kissed everybody on the cheek and he went and went back over where they all were. Anyway, . . . and then, I don't know we were waiting, an, (pause) and for the plane, and (pause), I don't know another one of my cousins was there and I was talking to her and then, (pause), um, (pause). Let see (pause) and another thing, they were waiting in the terminal, for the airline. Brown airlines, and everything was Brown. Like, it was brown carpet, brown panel, and everything that wasn't brown. It was just completely, it was really weird. So anyway, we were waiting for the plane. And, I don't know, all of a sudden they called the plane and then, I don't know the next thing I remember is, (pause), like (pause), I was . . . an, all of a sudden . . . um the plane-- was inside the building and we were inside the building, where the plane was and these really huge doors opened, and it's we were on a cliff or 89 something and we were, up in the sky. Cause, when the doors opened I could see clouds, and the sky and stuff. You couldn't see anything else. It was like you were up high and then the plane goes right out of the air and I don't know, but I was right on the plane, and the next thing it was, (pause). I don't know a friend, my suitemate from last year, and I was talking to her and stuff. And it was just kind of strange. But then right after that, (pause), um, ah, (pause). Like I looked out the window. I don't know, we weren't flying and we were going really fast, and I looked out the window and we were going down like a road and we were in it, and we were in a tunnel. And it's like there is a cling over us and there is mountains there is mountains on the ceiling. Like it's all rock and stuff, all round but it's ceiling over it, like in a tunnel. But the lanes actually going thru there, like a tunnel. But there are cars coming the other way. Like you know. There is a median. And everything is a two- way traffic. But the airplane is going down the road with the cars in the tunnel, in this mountain. I don't know it's really strange. I don't know that's about it. I couldn't remember any this morning. I don't know why. Well, (pause), I can't (pause), I don't know, its really kind of funny, cause I had a couple of, (pause), I don't know if you could really call them dreams, I don't know, (pause), ah, (pause), I woke up a couple of times but I have a test today and I kept waking up thinking about it. Thinking all stuff, and it's this physiology test. And, I kept waking up and I was thinking, (pause), running through all the systems and stuff. So that's all, (pause). I don't know. I studied for it all day yesterday and it must be why. Cause that's all I did, but I really didn't have any other dreams. 90 Um, (pause), okay, (pause), um . . . let's see. . . . I don't know. This is really weird. All right . . . um . . . my roommate and I got involved in a . . . uh . . . in a money making deal. I don't know. It was like an experiment or something, and we were supposed to put money in ., we kept like, we were supposed to put in $1,500 a piece and we would get money in return. And with more money we'd make money in the process. We didn't know exactly what it was and we went to this place and put in our money. And I don't know . . . like um, an apartment an apartment building and there were about ten people in there. And they had, done the same thing. And . . ., ah, . . . I don't know . . ., the guy said he's gonna do the preliminary. Part or something . . . anyway we're all sitting there and he . . ., he opens . . ., he had this little box like a little computer box. It's got all push buttons on it . . . and he pushed a button and a door would open like. To a bedroom, or another room. We can all see in and there was, a boy laying on the bed. He's about, I don't know . . ., he's about 14 or something and he's lying there. And the guy pushes a button and um, . . . the boy sits up and then he pushes another button and the boy say's "Hello" I am dead. I am dead but . . . um, . . . and the man that was pushing the buttons, he said that . . . um . . . he had . . . ”he has taken, my soul is gone, but I am dead, and I am . . . I can do all these things." I don't know. It was really strange. You know. He was really pale and everything, and he was all . . . his face was all bruised and then like the guy would push buttons and the boy would do all these things like . . . he was like a rabbit, . . . like. I don't know. (pause) He'd push. . . . It was really gross. lie pushed the button and . . . well he would, he went out and took his liand and he pulled on his forehead and the top of his head opened up. 91 You could see like his brains and stuff and then he did it to his stomach. And he pulled his stomach open. And you could see inside it. It was really gross. And after that we were really disgusted. And after that we got up and left, and it was like, . . . sort of like, like a whole differ- ent continent or something like that. Ah, . . . ah . . . I . . . I didn't really, didn't have any . . . I didn't get much sleep. Um . . . I didn't have any dreams today. Subject #20 Oh, . . . let's see, I remember something about saccharin and food and drug administration was having a trial. Ah . . . Ok. That's all. Ah . . ., let see. From what I remember, it was about a pan . . ., ah, let's see, . . . ah, . . . um, that's all I remember. Um . . . or . . . ah . . . oh . . . , am . . . there was something that looked like a bug, ah, . . . a very small body to it and had like legs, very long. Ah . . . and all together was really small like a pin head, . . . ah . . . and what happened was it filled up like a ballon, and it turned into a head. Ah . . . and it had this yellow . . . it has veins on the head, eyes and bones. Ah . . . see I am there and someone else, and . . ., the whole thing is the other person is blowing smoke in this face is taking the smoke and blowing it back . . . that's it. Oh let's see, I remember dreaming. Let's see . . . oh, I really can't remember. Um, . . . yea, . . . ah, I had one about going on a trip . . . um . to a sunny place like California or Florida. With me and my boy- friend, and two other people and ah. . . . We were driving in the car and 92 we hit kind of a peninsula and we stopped. And there was a beach that was all rocky and ah, there was a lot of people and we decided to go down a ways to another spot, to a sandy beach, and that's the whole thing. Ok, . . . ah . . . let's see. All I can remember was that . . . um, we were at a house that we were visiting. . . . Me and my boyfriend. I think and um . . . the woman there was pregnant and, ah . . . she was acting pretty strange. Um . . . let's see . . . and I think at the end I thought I was pregnant. I am not sure. Ah . . . I can't remember any. Uh . . . let's see . . . all I remember was, um . . . for some reason. I was in a boat out in the ocean and we were going . . . someplace. Where we can pick up 27,000 tons of lead . . . that's all. Subject #21 I don't remember any of my dreams. Slept: Good. I didn't have any last night either. Slept: Sound. Yea . . . I had a dream. (laugh). I dreamed, that last night, ah ha . . . I dreamed of an Indian Sacrifice. . . . It was really weird. There was a big hanging . . . no . . . a big frame thing, and they had an Indian was tied on it. And there was a frame thing, and they had the ceremony . . . um . . . you know they took it apart piece by piece . you know . . .each hog and everything and afterwards my friends and I sat around and discussed economics chapters. Slept: Good. I didn't have any. Slept: Good. Can't remember them. Slept: Good. I dreamed like . . . uh . . . like, my relatives live on a farm up north. So I dreamed, I went up there this summer, and worked in the drugstore there. And, when I was there, it was really boring. For me. You know, I was really different. I just realize how different I was from all the people there. And that I got really excited. You know when- ever someone from home came up to visit me. Whenever they came, we had parties and stuff like that. Slept: Sound. Subject #22 I can't remember anything. Slept: Really good. OK, I dreamed I was on a bus . . . that's about it. Slept: Good. 94 Ok, Saturday morning I don't remember any, and Saturday night the only one I remember is um, I was walking in the woods with my dog. And my dog got lost. And I just kept calling my dog, and I lost him. I was really scared, and I can't remember how it ended. It must sort of faded out I guess . . . those . . . are the only ones I remember. Slept: Good. Um . . . ok . . . I know I dreamed. Because I woke up . . . and I remember dreaming. But now I can't remember it. So do you want me to write it down. I know I will remember it later, cause I always do. Slept: Good. Subject #23 Um . . . ok . . . I know I dreamed. Because I woke up . . . and I remember dreaming. But now I can't remember it. So do you want me to write it down. I know I will remember it later, cause I always do. Slept: Good. No, I didn't. Well, I don't remember what I did last night. But I did yesterday I think, that . . . ah . . . ah . . . wow, is that weird. I dreamed that, I got an apartment with this girl, that lives next door to me. (laugh) It was like a house, but was an apartment . . . but it really looked just like a house. That's about all I dreamed. Slept: All three nights slept good. Sound. Uh . . . I can't really remember where I was. Uh. We have this park by our house. Big you know. And I just remember I was out there. (laugh) Uh. I don't know. I can't remember anything. But I slept sounder than I have slept in a long, long time. Slept: Sound. Um . . . I didn't dream anything. Slept: Good. 95 I dreamed that I went home but it wasn't home. It was like different peeple. It was like people I use to go out with, had the same name, but they looked different. Slept: Good. I don't remember anything. Slept: Good. Saturday night I dreamed that like I was back in high school . because I was with all the kids I used to hang around with in high school like we were doing queer stuff. Like we were walking all over and like messing around, like around, like behind McDonalds and stuff like that (laugh). It's really weird stuff, but I never used to hang around McDonalds, ever before (laugh) . . . but, um . . . and like we were running all over in the dark. It was weird. (laugh). It was really weird (laugh). Slept: Good. Subject #24 Uh . . . I can't remember anything. Slept: Really good. Um. I only can remember one dream for this weekend. That I went back to my high school, but it really wasn't my old high school. That's all. Slept: Sound all three nights. I dreamed I went someplace, but I wasn't sure where it was. The people seem really strange. That's about all. Slept: Good. All I can remember is that I was taking a test. All I can remember is writing and filling the blanks. Slept: I am not sure because some- times it is cold and I wake up. I didn't dream anything . . . I don't remember. Slept: Not as good as usual. Disturbed sleep. Um . . . I remember being home for the summer . . . that's all. Slept: Good. 96 No, I don't remember anything. Slept: Good. NO . . . I didn't dream anything . . . I can't remember. And they had a coon with them. A raccoon. A dog . . . and ah, I don't know, they were runnin' down my Old street . . . and I was helpin' 'em. That's about it. I don't remember any other ones. Mmm . . . ahh . . . we were travelin' around down south . . . by car, the whole family. An' ah . . . I don't remember too many specifics . just ah like my brother an' I were crawlin' around (3 see) an' ah (5 sec) that's about it. Oh, I had a good one! Well, we were ah--we all got done playin'--ahh . some kind of game or somethin', an' ahh . . . we were sitting in the Munn Ice Arena . . . and we're looking at this schedule and waiting for 99 something, and then it turned into be the science building all of a sud- den because they had test tubes and everything all over Munn Ice Arena. An' ahh . . . then we came and got the janitor and he turned into a pro- fessor.--He told us we couldn't be there but we were supposed to be there anyhow. . . . Ahh, an' then ah he wasn't real happy--he was a real nice guy, so he helped us out--we were lookin' at the schedule, and tryin' to find something . . . an' ahh . . . then all of a sudden ah, . . . Mary Platt, the girl . . . who lives across the hall was there too . . . I don't know where she came from . . . she was sittin' there--she's real calm and everything and I look up and there's this big tornado outside the window . . . an' ah . . . I thought Mary--we'd better get out of here pretty fast--it's comin' right at us, so I thought--we'd better get down by the river--I mean the-~the cellar, in the basement. An' ah, Mary was just sittin' there--she didn't wanna' . . . move--she's sittin' right in front of this window—- . . . practically draggin' her along and then she disappeared . . . an' it--runnin' down through the hallways as fast as I could . . . an' all-~the whole place turned into my junior high school. Well not mine, but another one in town. An' ah . . . I kept runnin' down these stairs an' I was runnin' so fast . . . I--flew down the stairs . . . practically. An' ah . . . I don't know--I got in the basement an' I sat down . . . an' ah, I never felt or heard the to--tornado I just woke up. Ahh yes. . . . Well, in today's dream I was travelin' through EurOpe. (Unclear for 4 sec) nothin' much special happened. Oh--last night was good I dreamed I was dying . . . an' ah . . . I was just layin' there you know an' first I was . . . you know I didn't believe 100 it . . . an' then ah--later on you know how much you . . . 'an I just decided I was so . . . I wasn't . . . scared or nothin' I just didn't wanna' die, an' I was so mad--I didn't wanna' die, . . . an' ah . . people kept—-like ah, they--asked me like how do you wanna' go there's two ways an' . . . one way we sprinkle this stuff over ya' before you die. The other way we pour this . . . 33g_bowl of soup--you--it looks like yogurt all over ya'. . . . So I had them pour this stuff that looked like yogurt all over me. An' I lay there cryin' and bawlin' you know. (half laughs), and then people would come to visit me . . . an'--an' I don't know--I just woke up. An' then I had another dream. An' this one was about John Denver. An' we were just sittin' there talkin' and walkin' around. An' ah . he--oh the-~he noticed I had a few of his records sittin' out in my room. An' ah . . . I said yeah, I like his music . . . I don't know. That was a short one. And there was somethin' else if I--I could just remember what it was . hmm (3 sec) well if I remember I'll tell ya' later. Mm . . . I don't remember dreamin'. I can't remember dreamin' anything. Subject #4 Ahhhh--I really don't even remember anything, I know that. (Laughs) Ah you can have 'em all. Ahh--if I remember 'em. I really don't remember 'em really. That's really crazy. All right? Mmm . . . I have my dreams . . . uh--I'm having a hard time remem- berin' any . . . I don't even know if I'm havin' any. 101 Yeah--um—-um, I--can't--I'm having trouble rememberin' 'em (said w/a half-laugh). A--and so--(laugh)--and this morning's the same--sorry. Ahh wow--well, I remember some yesterday. I went back to sleep. And yesterday. . . . Wow let me think for a second--to gather my thoughts . . . ah . . . one. No this is from yesterday. Well afterwards--well--after you woke me up I went back to sleep. Oh let me think . . . one ah--let's see I had two. I was playing . in a rock group how's that? And--that's very vague both of 'em are very vague. (laugh) an' another one . . . ah, oh, this might be hard to take (laugh) ah . . . I was making love with my aunt--how's that. And today maybe when I go back to sleep I'll remember what I was dreamin'. All right? Subject #5 Hold on a second. Mumble. Mumble. This could be a while--I have a very good memory. All right, where do we start here. . . . The first that I can remember . . . I'm at my sister's beauty shop. OK--I guess I'm just there to pass the time. (I do that a let all the time any- way (said quietly). Uh . . . but these six guys come in . . . and had stolen some food or something but they were all complaining that they hadn't stolen any eggs and they were yelling at each other . . . um, they left again . . . and a lot Of stuff went on in between . . . uh before they came back but . . . um . . . (I didn't--I don't really remember any- thing. It was the first dream I had I believe. Um.) Ihgg--right after that—-you know--whatever--um, I had a--this burning thing to ah . remember--I had put this paper and pencil down there and it was I don't 102 know part dream or whatever, you know--ah I gotta get the paper to do it and ah . . . I . . . start moving around . . . ahh, then I--I looked up and ah . . . it was a . . . big (garbled) girl standin' there she musta been about . . . 6 feet tall or whatever you know, you see something . and ahh she was . . . wearin' a blue denim skirt and this--a MSU type T- shirt . . . and I stared at her for awhile and then I realized that it was ah . . . just things in the room . . . I thought . . . that were forming the girl ahhh . . . (unclear) I really don't think . . . (said quietly) then the next thing I can remember . . . ah I'm in some sort of a room or 3333 thing . . . and ah . . . I go in 333 room and--it's--some sort of a grggp thing and they're doing some kind of physical fitness type deal I did some stuff in there and ah . . . then I walked in another room, and ah, I'm being interviewed for . . . conference and thing . . . ah . and my roommate's in there and this other girl and they're being interviewed by a woman . . . and she asked us to do ah . . . these ah-- these ah . . . president's council fitness thing --it's just to describe it. Ah . . . then she has a--a sheet and she's writing these things down or somethin'--there's 10 of 'em or something and ah . . . ah, my roommate does something . . . and--for some reason I'm 222) and ah everytime I look at her . . . recording sheet she's writing down some outrageously low . . . ah--numbers, or whatever it was . . . um . . . we were just talk- ing-~I don't remember what we were saying and I leave the room and go down the hall from where I had come from in the first place and I ah . knock on this one door and the man comes from somewhere. We talk and I . don't remember what we say an' ah . . . I . . . go to the door just to the left of that and it's the bathroom or something. I think it 33 the 103 bathroom and ah . . . I . . . get--I don't know--I walk in--next thing I can remember I'm returning back to the room where we're being interviewed. And she's asking Dave some question about ah . . . oh what--oh what have you done here at the university so far or something and he's answering some intellectual smart-ass . . . which ah . . . I'm sure that the woman doesn't understand (laughs) 323 I look at the physical sheet again and she's got me down for some other ridiculously low things and I start push- ups over by the E223: And I return, I sit down . . . and an . . . the other girl in the room is answering some kind of question . . . and then I--the next thing I'm sitting on the bed there . . . and ah . . . it's like a ggrm room or something and ah . . . I'm sittin' there waitin' for . her to give me my question about the same thing and people start coming in the room. And ah . . . then she asked me a question and I answered her kind of like ah, "I'm a . . . first-term junior here, n' . there's some garbage goin' on--a business major, n' some other gar- bage n' ah." . . . Ah . . . these people are laughing or something. It's like half the crowd with me or whatever . . . and ah . . . she's laughing, she's standing over there . . . by the door, in the middle of all these people. Uh--then . . . she's-~I finished talking n‘ . . . she's the one in the room and we're just . . . talking informally--type and ah . about the last I can remember about that--then there's another one. I'm not sure where it starts. I'm standing in a room looking out the window . . it sort of seems to be like south complex and I'm watching this football game and the two teams are playing with this big yellow glider. Hold on a second, the alarm just rang (laughs). Um . . . let me see. . . Oh! The alarm just rang . . . (quietly) the alarm just rang. Uh. 104 Big--playing with big yellow glider playing ah--some sort of football. And ah--one of the teams is dressed in pprhipf--well, they're dressed in just . . . regular type clothes. The other one is wearin' these blue shirts all wearin' the same thing and white lettering on it. I--couldn't remember what I said. I was watchin' through the window and then ah . the one team must have scored or somethin' and the team farthest away throws--throws it off like a kick-off. And . . . the next thing I know ah . . . the guy catches it and there I am right next to 'em. And I'm sort of half—heartedly blocking for him and then he's . . . sort of tackled by the guys and he laterals off to a guy who lives on my floor . which is dressed in regular clothes . . . and there's some others there--ah--around that I know. And we started to block for him an' ah-- they were--we're all in street clothes . . . an' ah--now--he's tackled and the ah . . . then the game is under some kinda' artificial light or some- thing it's like, it's ahh . . . kinda' like indoors. And we're walking back to the huddle and ah . . . a guy is tripled with last year--beginning of the year,--he's telling me of his ah--blocking techniques where he (unclear) and hits him in the groin and ah . . . they asked him if he was wearing a protective cover or something. And then in a way he sort of and then I have . . . these like water--big like waterfalls-really broad, coming down in sort of a mountain an' ugh--this voice is going--ah--recall! Recall! Recall! or something--I think you got me scared to death about-- ah--remembering my dreams. Umm . . . I think that's about it. Um . . . I went to bed kinda' . . . late last night and I took 333 thing . . . but I'm having kinda' trouble recalling it--it's sort a' hazey, so . . . I guess I'll just-~have to try to work on it (laughs) and 105 get it to you tomorrow . . . ok? That's about the only thing I can remem- ber dreaming 'cuz . . . the ah . . . I don't know, it's just. . . . Ah . I remembered it--I was like--there was--the first day--I remembered it before . . . and ah . . . I didn't bother to write it down . . . and I . .2. it just sort of--I don't know, um (4 sec). Sorry . . . nothing (said quietly) No--no, one, thing with this is ah . . . I have sort of a . photographic type mind like in class and things . . . mostly from lectures and ah . . . (mumble) I do a lot of thinking type things at night, which is like kinda'-~picturesque . . . and ah . . . and the problem with first night, of course, I wasn't . . . very tired . . . I've been tired ah--the last couple nights, and ah . . . that gets in the way of dreaming an' I . find it hard to distinguish after awhile (laughs) what's ah dreaming and what's thing cuz I—-I worked at the RHA concert . . . and ah . . mm, sort Of'--tell you some things about £333 . . . which ah . . . (mumble) absolutely Erpg, you know they were word for word--oh, I don't know what to say. At least I got one this time (breathy laugh). That's about the only thing (mumbled). Um . . . there's um . . . I'm in my room, and ah . I guess I--for some reason I'm working for a radio station . . . and ah . I'm supposed to be studying for a test . . . and they said I had to work the midnight shift to um to study for the test. So--I get on my bicycle . . . and ah . . . I ride all the way over to Conrad . . . an' . in there, and ah . . . all the people work there are people I know . from around for different reasons, and ah . . . when I walk in, somebody's on the air already, so I walk out the back . . . it's not 106 related at all to anything (mumble--2 see) an' I'm out there an' ah . two other guys come out that I know. (3 sec) An' I started--I said you know--this guy--one guy says he doesn't wanna work his time . . . so instead I say the hell with it--I'll work his time . . . an then ah--so I go inside . . . and . . . I start fiddlin' around with the--the--the records just that I'm playing . . . and all the records like are . . . are arranged like this super (unclear word) thing--they're like cereal boxes. Ah. So there's somebody else on the air up there and there's this one girl who . . . you really can't understand very much--and ah' . . . there was this going on and then she finishes and she screws up in some way she has some record on and it went too long . . . and--we have to start . doing all kinds of garbage and-—and then finally ah . . . she finishes and she starts doing something strange--I don't know she . . . there was like a big chalk board . . . inside the ah . . . the station--she starts erasin' it and starts doin' somethin' ridiculous. I don't know what it was . . . so ah, I'd run back over on the other side and try an' get some records decide to put because she's not doin' much of anything . . . and ah--I grab about three or four, they're all these-~they're all cereal boxes . . . and I run back over to the . . . other side . . . and ah . meantime she leaves the room, she goes in the other room for some reason I think that it's like--it's my ah . . . little sister. She's goin' to the other room in the house and she turns up music in the other place really loud and ah--news going, and ah . . . or--she--there's--she turned on music and there's a station coming in through the other side that's ah the news like I--I think it's ten O'clock . . . and ah, that goes on, and . she turns the music up really loud and the . . . feedback through 107 the--through the ah . . . microphone ah . . . the air on this station . so, I reach in and I open up this cereal box an' . . . I'm fishing in and finally I pull out this one record which is something I know. It's ah . . . new album . . . and ah I'm looking at it and I'm looking for the one song that I know--I saw 'em in concert and I saw them playing (said quietly) and I'm looking in the hope . . . this really strange title and things on the ah . . . the album title. It's like in Spanish or some- thing an' . . . you can't tell what anything is you look like on the out- side of the box an' you get inside an' it's really (unclear) third song so I flip back over and look at all these dumb Spanish titles and I count down to the third one (breathy laugh) an' I put that down--on an' ah. . She turns some music on in the other place and she leaves . . . an' then--an' then the phone rang. (breathy laugh) Nothing (breathy laugh). Nothing (breathy laugh). Um . . . um, ah (mumbled). Oh yeah. Ok, the one thing was kinda long and . . . it's just to write it down so I kinda remember how 'bout if I write it down and sort of give it to you tomorrow? . . . so . Cuz I'm gonna' fall asleep. (laughs) Cuz I'm gonna' fall asleep on the phone. (laugh) Nothing (laugh). Subject #6 Hello, yea, I usually remember, but, I can't really remember anything from last night. Slept: Pretty deeply. 108 Hello, yep, hi. Ah, I don't remember them. (Pause). Hello yep it's me, hi Sandy. Um, let's see, (pause), I don't remember 'em again. (Pause). Slept: Ah deep again. And he, ah, he just turned off the light or something when she came home, and she started yelling at him, and that was it, sort of. And then, (pause), I saw some guy here from my floor, somewhere else I don't know where it was, it looked like New York City. And ah, I asked him if he wanted to go to Lizzard's. And um, he said it was too early or something like that. And I said it didn't matter because I didn't have any money anyways. And then, and then [had a dream that the experimenter called it was this experiment, and asked me to name all the people who were in the dreams, the dreams I had. Those are the ones I remember. 0k yep, bye. Hello, yep, hi. Ah, I don't remember them. (Pause). Slept: Very deep. Hello, yep. Hi, whew, all I can remember is just one of them, I was just on a beach walking around. Just nothing going on really. Slept: Good. Hello, hi, no, not that I can remember from last night. I remember one from yesterday though. My suitemate and roommate and I were going to have a picnic. He said he'd buy the food, if I'd buy the bread. It was wierd. Slept: I slept well. Hello: yep, hi. Let's see, no I don't think so. Slept: Pretty good. 109 Hello, hi. Nope. Slept: Oh, pretty good. Hello, hi. Um, not that I remember. Slept: Pretty good. I remem- bered one little place that I dreamed from yesterday. Yea just um, I put some pictures from our walls on the bulletin board, my roommate didn't know it. And I dreamt that I came back one day and he had them all put back where they were, all over the room. Ok, bye, bye, Sandy. Hi, yea, I don't remember anything from last night. Sorry. Slept: Pretty, pretty good. Hello, yep hi. Um, no, but I remember one from yesterday. Let's see, um, I was going to take this test in this big building with all these rooms. And I sat down with this one test, there was just a few people there, it turned out that it was the wrong test. So I wandered around some more and, I went in this other building, I mean this other room, same building; and I saw this guy who I knew from last year, and we were talking. And he just said that um, he started meditating or something like that and that he didn't like it. And then he said he was looking for this girl and he showed me her picture, and I said I didn't see her. And then um, I was looking for my test more, the room, and um, I saw my advisor from last term, and asked him the room, he didn't know. And then I walked around that building some more, and then I don't remember what else happened. Slept: Ok. Hello, yep. Hi, nope, nope. Slept: Pretty good yea, you too, bye bye. Subject #7 Yea, no afraid not, I, I slept just like a rock last night. Sorry. ok, bye. 110 Hello, this is Tim. Yea it is. Um, not that I can remember. It's unusual but, ok yea. Slept: Solid. It's rare for me. That's why I usually, I don't sleep as soundly as I have during the last couple of days. I usually wake up several times during the night. Lately I've just been gone, you know? I drop off and I don't wake up again until the morning. 0k, yep, bye. Hello, this is Tim. Yea. Um, this is going to really be chaotic. I'll try to get it across to youi Well it started out that um, I was back home, and I was working at a store that I worked at during the summer, a grocery store; and I was just about ready to go for lunch and I was going to pull my time card out and ah to fill in my time for lunch, and it was in a completely different place than where we kept our time cards. I pulled out a card, and it had my name on it, but it wasn't my time card. For some reason I took it to mean that this is something like my boss was keeping track of the days I was missing. And there was a place on the card and it had a date on it, and then it had something written in it, and it was scratched out in ink, so I kept looking at it really close and it said watching T.V. or something. And I said, but on this date I was here. You know? That was the other day that I missed all the time. But any- ways, I kind of forget about that. I was waiting for my dad to come and get me, and so I can't really remember the time lapse in there; but all of a sudden I was at home. And ah, ah we were eating, what we had were those ah, those frozen meat leaves that come in ah aluminum foil pans. Ok, we get done eatin', and I have about half of it left, and my mom says, "Well you can take it back to the store with you, and eat it on break." And I say, “what is this," I didn't really want the thing, and I say, 111 "well ah, I don't have time to eat it on break and she says, "You don't have time!". And so everybody was kidding me about that cause, for some reason I think that I, I'm thinkin' in my head that I have a 15 minute break and a 10 minute break, during my job, ok? Then ah, that finally settles down, I just kind of let that lie. I'm not going to bring any- thing back, and I go downstairs and I've got about 20 minutes left before I have to go back to work, and I go down into ah, what used to be my old bedroom: and it still is my old bedroom and my stuff is just like it used to be. And my roommate's down there the one at college, he's never been to my house or anythin'. Um, so I'm talkin' to him, and ah, we come out of the bedroom and there's a knockan:the door, and it's this old man: And I don't know, we had quite a long conversation with him, but somehow he gets across to us that well one of the things is, his arm is broken, and another thing is he doesn't have any money and he doesn't have anyplace to stay, so he's kinda beggin' or something. He, at first he, he tries to get some money from us, asking for some money, he asks us in a really indirect way though. He doesn't really come out and say it, like you say, well you know we're college kids, we don't have any money." We're just renting this place, you know? And ah, somehow ah, I get the idea that he wants to stay there with us or something. And he starts tryin' to do stuff for us, and it's right in the middle of the winter; he says "man it's hot in this place, I think I'll Open the windows for you. So he goes around and he opens all the windows, and wow it's getting colder than heck inside, and I, and I asked my roommate, "who Opened these windows?" And he said, "Well, he did." And I says, "I'm getting really fed up with this guy," because this guy's really a leech. So 1 say, I grabbed the 112 guy by the arm, I can't remember if it was the one that was broken or not. And I said, "ok mister so and so, go and, go an' close all these windows, and then you're going to have to leave, ok?" And so he's goin' to close all the windows, this is the really strange part. The time I'm just about to escort him to the door, I think, well he, he like changes you know, like sometimes you can change people you're with. Like he changes into a eat, all right? And so I'm puttin' this cat out the door, and it has a broken paw, and I toss it out there in the snow, and I look down at it, it looks, it looks really pathetic. It's paw broken, it's--it's ah hair's standing up, really looks cold. And I'm thinkin', it's probably going to die or something. And so I'm lookin' right at it's eyes, it's eyes are the same colors that his were, and I say, ”oh wow, you can stay." 50 I go and grab him, and when I say that, the cat's eyes just about bulge out, but I go get him and bring him inside, and I lie him down on the couch. By ah, well we have two other cats, well really we only have one, but ah, ok? And I said well it's about time I go to work, so I go upstairs and my dad's there; and I say ”Dad, I got another eat!" And he says, POh really." And I'm really afraid that, you know, that he's not going to like that idea at all. Well he says "let's go downstairs and see it.” So we go downstairs. It's surprising me, he doesn't seem too, too ah mad at the idea, but he says, "Let's see him." I show 'em to him, and ah, I say well he has a broken paw. He says, "Oh he does," and he grabs right a hold of one of his ah, one of the cat's arms and I say, "God, that was a really mean thing to do, why did he do that, you know, that would have really hurt. How would you like it if someone did that to you." And so then I woke up. That was the end of that. Slept: Ah, last night, well lately 113 I've been keepin' a lot of late hours and it just seems like I've been sleepin' late. It's so rare for me to sleep as hard as I've been sleep— ing lately. Now should we keep track of dreams we have during the day? And stuff? Ok, yea, ok, bye. Hello, yea. Oh yea. Yea. Ah, let me think, ah I dreamed I was here at M.S.U. and ah, but the way they had the residence hall set up was a lot different. And they had, well Brody anyway, had a great big swim- ming pool in the middle of it in a great big square. And then the halls themselves were ah, were like a hotel that went all the way around it. And ah, there were a lot of people, and they were all sunbathing all the way around the hotel all the way around the pool and it was really packed. But I wasn't, I was walking around kind of like the edge of the water. And ah, then I had to ah, I had to like go in and sign up for like a room. What they did, you didn't keep any room for any long time, it's like you had it for 2 or 3 days I think it was, and ah so I went in and they had a lot of different lines, they had a lot of small lines with maybe about eight or nine people in each; and I could see about two or three of them. So I got into one of the lines and then I remembered that I had to sign up and tell them two people. My roommate was going to be gone for the weekend. This was kind of strange but like he had a ah, there was like a girl from his home town that was supposed to come up and stay, in the room with me, which was really wierd that I you know I didn't I really didn't even think of it so . . . I was standing in line and ah, there were a lot, a lot of couples in line and stuff you know a lot but, ah um I was looking at them and none of them were looking at me, and so that was kind of bummin' me out. And then it was strange, right 114 about the end of my dream I saw two girls were homosexuals, and they were walking along hand in hand and I thought that was really kind of ironic because both of them were pretty nice looking, and I thought that wow you know, I'd just as soon be with either of them for that and I didn't know. Ok. Slept: Good, I slept from like 8:00 to 11:00 and then I got up and stayed up to 3:00 and just went back to bed at 3:00. No, I'm sorry I didn't. Slept: Pretty good. Hello, yep. No, afraid not. Slept: Pretty good. Hello, hi. Yea. One the other day. It was really strange. I was back in my home town and I was at ah, the yard of my grandparent's old house. I haven't been there in about 10 years. Anyway, um, it was really ah, beautiful day outside and all of my family and relatives were there. And ah, (pause), we were all out on the lawn, and ah, ah, we had all these frisbees, and they were all made out of foam rubber. And ah, well there were three sizes, small ones, medium ones, and large ones. (Pause), ah, we had like, kind of like a game starting up. We were like ah throw- ing frisbees at one of my grandfathers, and he would throw them back. It really didn't really seem to bother him, and he started throwing them right back. It was kind of like crossfire frisbees. But, it didn't really bother him, he wasn't scared or nothin'. We didn't do it to be mean. It was like a game or something. I don't really remember what I dreamed last night. Slept: Fine, pretty decent. Ok, bye. Hello. Afriad not, you know, I have 'em, but I can't I just can't remember. I can just remember so few things about 'em, I can't, they don't really go together or anything. I can just remember like one par- ticular instance and I can't remember you know, the whole story to it. Slept: Ah, (pause), all right, not real good. 115 Hello, hi. Yea. No, I didn't remember anything from last night. If I take a nap this afternoon, I can tell you the dream I have tomorrow. Slept: Good. Hello, yep. Nope. Slept: Um, not real good, ok but nothin' great. I woke up a couple times. Yep, bye. Hello, yea, um, no. Ok. Slept: Good. Real well. Subject #8 Hello. This is Chris, yea, yea I did. First of all, I was on a bus, and I was coming back up to school, and I stopped at all these dif- ferent places to take all these tests; and my neighbor, it was, was the one lady that was giving me these tests. And um, I don't remember, and another part oh um, oh I can't remember. (pause) Let's see, um we stopped at a lot of stores on, on the way, in little towns. But it was really wierd cause, um, I don't know it was just really different. Ok. Slept: Pretty good. Ok, bye, bye. Hello, hello, yea. Hi. Um, yea. It's sort of mixed up, but most of it like, I was driving with my girlfriend and we were driving past all these police, and um we decided we wanted to be one too. And so we did, and somehow I had, I had killed somebody, and this, this guy was at was chasing me and this was when I was a cop. He was chasing me and he was trying to kill me; but my girlfriend got him before he did. (laugh) It was kind of wierd but . . . I remembered something from last night too. The night before. Um, I was talking about coming home, coming back up here on a bus, well I had gone home; the reason I went home was because my brother had been, I have a 6 year old brother he had been bitten by a spider and I had to go to this old shack where this old lady lived and 116 get this potion or something and bring it back and give it to 'em. And um, I, the spider was in the shack, and] had to go by him to get it, and come back and give it to my little brother. And that, that, that, I don't know it didn't fit too well, but that was right before I got on the bus. Slept: Um, pretty good. I didn't get much sleep. Ok, bye. Hello, yea, um yea, I have to think a minute though, 'cause I was sleeping. Um, I was in 3, oh gosh, a big hotel like well, um um, every- one was taking finals, and everyone had to like ah, they were like com- peting to see who could get out of the place. It was like they couldn't leave the hotel. It was really kinda wierd, but, um. I'll probably remember more this afternoon tomorrow. Slept: Not too good, I kept wakin' up. Ok, bye, bye. Hello, yes, hi. Um no! I can't remember any of 'em. Um gosh maybe I should take your phone number and if I do I could call you back this afternoon. Oh ok, ah ah. I think that would be the best because I remem- bered something from the night, the night before. Um, it's not connected with the other part but I remember um, my mom was havin' like ah this party, this dinner party or somethin'. You know, it was really vague but she was havin' this party with a lot of people and friends over and ah, she made me wear this red knit dress and she, she introduced me to all her friends like you know, this is my daughter Chris, the college stu- dent. And, and that's all she said you know, and I got really upset. That that's all she cared about you know, I just left. And I got mad, you know but it was really funny because these people, it was like she was, you know, like she was showin', showin' me off you know; but um, it was really funny there was one little part, it wasn't really connected with the other parts. 117 Really good sleeping. Hello, hi. No, I didn't have one today, but I remember one from the night before. My mom and I went shopping and then suddenly I was riding on a tricycle with a smock dress on. TTKNII went to my swimming lessons, and I saw a child on a leash. I couldn't believe it. I started yelling at the pe0ple with the kid at the tOp of my lungs. 2. My dad and I went looking at houses and then my dad started talking about five fire engines. After we went to look at houses, my mom and I went to visit my ah, grandma at the nursing home. My grandma really is in a nursing home, you know. And . . . Slept: I slept good. Hello, hi. Um yea. Um, this ah, mostly about my sister, and um, she had these people who she played with, and they took care of her. She was like, I don't know, more or less like ahead of 'em. And it, I was following her and we went through all these different caves. And every time I got close to her, they wouldn't let me talk to her. And then finally I snuck into one, and I, I went up to her and I just shook her. And then I told her that she, she was gonna, she was gonna live with me. And that's about it. Pretty good. 0k, bye, bye. Hello, hi. Um, not that I can remember, but I can remember some more from last night. Ok, um, first of all, let's see, I went back to sleep after I talked to you. Um, let's see, my boyfriend and I were in my old boyfriendkshouse (exclaimed) and um, ok Mike is the one now, and Tim was the one before. And Tim's dad came up and told me that my dad was going to get me because he was really made at me. And um, so he came to get me and he told Mike to go away, and then Mr. Tobin, Tim's dad, and Tim brought me to this big ah, like train station. And Tim said, ah, like, 118 you had to, you have to marry me and um every thing is all set and you're never gonna see Mike again. And ah, I was really mad and I said that I hate you, I don't even like you anymore; and ah, I go, I've been with Mike for a really long time and we're gonna get married. At it was just wierd, then I just ran away, and he said well you're not gonna see him anymore, because we don't want you to. (Pause). That's about it. I'll probably remember some from last night but I just woke up and I'm kind of yech. Slept: Well not too good in the beginning and then once I got to sleep I was fine. Ok, bye, bye. Hi, Sandy, um, I can't remember the ones from last night but, I remembered the ones from the night before. Um, I was comin' up here next year to go to school and, I went um apartment hunting. And I went to my friend's house and she was a close friend of mine, she had an apartment; but she wasn't going to let me stay with her, and she had extra rooms and everything. And then ah, an old girlfriend of mine got married, and that's about all. Slept: Um, pretty good. Ok, bye. Oh, hi. Yea I did. I dreamt that I got a job working for this guy who was really rich. He had a really big house, and he had all his friend's over all the time. I was I guess, kind of like the maid. He let me use one of his sports cars so I could go over to a friend's house. I went to a girlfriend's house. At the time I had been seeing her brother. We kind of broke up, and he wanted me to come back. But, then I just left. 2. This is one I had the night before. I was trying to find an apartment for next year. My girlfriend had this really big apartment and she invited all these people to stay over at it. She was a good friend of mine, but she said I couldn't live there. Slept: Pretty good, I didn't get much sleep last night though. 119 Hello, yea. Um, yea. Um I dreamt that my boyfriend came and picked me up in this real old, beat up, dusty car and let's see um, gosh I can't remember. Um, and I was livin' with these people takin' care of um and no, I was livin' in this like dorm or whatever and everyone was makin' a lot of noise so I had to go to my R.A. and tell her about it. I don't know nothing made any sense last night. But if, I remember more, I can tell you about it. Slept: Fine, ok, bye, bye. (She will record Saturday's dream and tell me about it on Monday because she went home for the weekend.) Hello, ok, first of all it starts out where I was walkin' into this place and it's like a big covered mall. But like what it is on the side there's all these different restaurants and bars, and there's like little streets inside: but the whole thing is covered. And I walked in um with my boyfriend and some of my other friends, and we went to all the dif- ferent ones; and we ended up in this one place. And as I walked in ah, he--he bought me some roses and when we walked in there were all my friends there and um, then it skipped to where; he and 1, Mike and I were drivin' in a van. And um, he got mad about something. I don't remember what, and that was the end of that one. And then it skips to a part where we were um, we were driving to a movie, and we went to the drive-in. And we were sittin' there watching the movie, and then his dad was talkin' to us on a CB radio, and we don't, we didn't even have one, but he was; and um, we were talkin' to his dad, and that's where it ends. Slept: Pretty well, I didn't get that much sleep at all, but it was good. Ok, Ok, thanks a lot. Bye, bye. 120 Subject #9 Hello, um which one, speaking. Hum, hum, not that I can remember. Slept: Um, not too good. My roommate had the heat on too high. Oh, um, I'm supposed to tell you I am leaving Thursday afternoon for the weekend. Yea. Ok, hum, hum, goodbye. Hello, speaking, um, um, no, but yesterday afternoon I did. Have one. I don't know, yea, the whole thing, I just remember a part that I went to like a house and it was a familiar house to me, and there was like a party of some type going on and there was a baby crying, and it was crying really hard, and nobody cared, nobody ever went to see why the baby was crying, or anything else, (pause), . . . and then I got a phone call. Slept: Very hard. I was kind of tired 50. Hello, um speaking, oh hi. Yea I did. Ok, Friday night I dreamt that, have you seen the movie, The Other Side of the Mountain? I was in her place. (Pause.) Um, and that was the only one. No not that that I can remember. Very seldom do I remember any of my dreams. Slept: Fine. Um, um. Ok, bye, bye. Hello, yea, um, um, nope. Slept: Pretty good. Ok, bye. Hello, um, um, nope. Slept: Fine (nasty). Hello, nope! I got at all (?) Slept: Fine! (snotty) Hello, yea, um, um, nope. Slept: Fine. Ok, bye, bye. Hello, hello, yea, yea. Nooo. (smart alecky) Slept: Just fine. Hello, hi. No. Slept: Just fine, no problem what-so-ever. (I said, what?) She said, no problem what-so-ever. Ok, bye, bye. 121 Subject #10 Hello. Now I can't remember them. Now I can't, I'll try tomorrow, I got up a little earlier than usual. All right, bye. Yes. Do you want me to say them? Ok, there was one dream where I was getting a paper back from a professor. It had a big check on it. Ok um, another dream I was 2. I was doing homework. And my dad told me and my sister to go upstairs, and my sister got in a big fight with me and broke a balloon (laugh). And there was one where my older sister got out an electric guitar, she melted her guitar case. And that was about it. Slept: Pretty good, restful and deep, that's what I'd say. Hello, hello, um yea um I just had one um pulling I was pulling a lot of purple stemmed plants with no flowers. I don't know what kind it is (laugh). Um then 2. I was reading an article that was written in German and shoot, that's all I can remember right now. They're kind of short, er once. . . . Slept um once I get started sleeping it was good. Oh and um, do you know if there is a meeting in Baker Hall. She said there was a feedback session at Baker Hall. Just recently, so you'll let us know about those. Hello, uh, uh, um, yeah, um there was a dream that I had to learn some music. 2. And I dreamed that I went on a trip to Disney World for a weekend, that was it. Slept: I must have slept pretty deep. Hello, hello, hi. Um yea, I wrote them down because I got up early. I was dreaming about pigeons. 2. And then there was this girl that I haven't seen for like since the beginning of last term. And I dreamed she got married. And that's about it. Slept: Ah. All right. 122 Hello, hello, oh hi. I can't remember any of them because I was sick. It was really hard for me to get to sleep last night. Ok, that's ok, you can call early tomorrow if you want, because it might be better then. I'm really sorry, ok, Ok. Bye. Hello, I can't remember a thing. Slept: Um, really good. All right, all right. Let's see, um, all I have today are one dream that I remember and it was me and the girl across the hall, Cindy were in this house that looked like a dorm, or a dorm that looked like a house. I'm not quite sure which one it was but anyways Fonze from Happy Days was, was sitting at this long banquet table with all these people, and we said something to 'em. We were yelling something down to him from the balcony, he started chasing us, so we dodged into a little room (laugh). That's about the extent of it. That's about it. Slept: Um, last night, I slept pretty good. Hello, yea hi, hi, um I just got done, and I can't remember what it was. Do you want me to tell you like tomorrow morning or something? When you call? Would that be all right? Okee doke, I'm sorry. Slept: Pretty good. Hello, um, um hello. Not last night, I didn't but I've got one from the night before. Does everybody have dreams or does it kind of go back and forth? Um, um, wow. Let me think, (pause). Just a second I wrote it down. (Pause) . . . how about if I look for it and give it to you tomorrow? All right, is that all right? Slept: Um, last night? Pretty good. Ok, bye, bye. Hello, um yep. Let's see if I can remember 'em. Yesterday morning, I had a dream about dorms again, instead of floors. There was a big 123 German Shepard in the dorm. 2. I also remember working at a stove, and I looked down and my hands were all cut up, and bloody. That's all I remember about that. Slept: All right. . Hello, hello, um, just a minute, I have them and then I forget them now. And then, oh well, cripe, I'm getting bad. Slept: Good. If I remember my dream, I'll let you know. Subject #11 Hello, I can't really remember my dreams from last night. Oh, what if, what if, I might as well tell you I don't remember anything now. Um I'm sure trying. But, uh (pause) yea, ok sure. I'll try and dream tomorrow. Ok, bye. Um not really, however, I thought of that um, I--I--I, rarely remem- ber my dreams anymore, um, I--I, can I can remember, I can remember, dreaming about once this term, but I don't remember it, but thought that um, I would, I--I, would be glad to, to tell you one of my dreams that I had a while ago that I remember pretty well, um, I—-I didn't, I didn't have it up at college. Yea I just wanted you to know that it wouldn't be last night's. What do they do with these dreams oh, ah, ah, right. Um, ah I woke a little early and uh (laugh), so I suppose I could've cut it short but, I'll try to explain it as best I can. Then I should I'll just start? Wednesday morning she was getting a tape recorder ready. Ok, um, ah, it was kind of an unpleasant dream (pause), and it was ah, kind of irrational like they all are. I--I dreamt that there were a group of about a dozen people and ah, they were, they were planning some kind of vacation, oh, it's kind of short, um, they ah, they all, each person there were maybe a dozen, each person um (pause) ah, drove ah drove a station 124 wagon. So that there were about a dozen station wagons (laugh) and they, they drove on a trip and they, they went to a to a beach, and I remember that it was ya know, it was on a sea; and ah, they, they, they put the station wagons in a line down the beach, um (pause) they were in a line and towards the sea, and ah (pause) um and what I remember then was that, that--that night, that they were all, they were all sleeping, you know, in the back of the station wagons in sleeping bags and facing outwards, towards, towards the sea. So that their, the window was open, and that their heads were exposed and ah. I remember, I remember there was some guy and it was really black out, and it was the middle of the night and every, everyone is sleeping, is sleeping, and um, he is, he is kind of ah (pause) um I, he is really harmless looking ah gee (laugh) he reminds me of ah, ah, I don't really remember a real harmless looking guy, but ah, but what he did was ah, he went down the line of them you know, them sleeping in the back of the station wagons and he (laugh) and he, he cut the cut their throats, I'm not, I'm not making it up (laugh). Um (pause) and um I remember that I remember that as he went down the line, and he he had a very sharp razor, and he cut their throats, and I noticed as he did this, to each person, they looked like, they looked like wooden manikins (pause). Ok, I, I don't remember when I had that, I had I still remember it pretty well. Um at the time I, I had this, I was having, I think for a few nights an extremely violent dream. They were just very unpleasant (laugh). I don't remember, I was having them quite a few nights, I was worried. I know I have trouble remembering my dreams like these days, see because is there anything I can do to remember them? So in other words I can set an alarm at 3:00 a.m. Yea, ok, my whole day um demands my time, you know, with homework and not the night. I'll try. 125 Hello, yea I'm Gerald oh, whew, oh boy let me think (laugh) just a minute ok, let me get on some bathrobe--well, ah you, you called um, was it you that um called yesterday morning. Oh yea, oh boy, I didn't even get a chance to set an alarm for 3:00 in the morning cause I didn't have an alarm clock ah huh (bad recording), they, they both have alarm clocks you know whew, I'm going to try and get one for tonight. Can't remember, um no I guess not. Hi, hello. What's the matter, Ok. No, I ah I woke up in the middle of the night (laugh) and ah, I still couldn't remember anything (laugh). Slept: Oh, not as good as, as the night before. What do you think? Are you going to be calling next week? Oh, (laugh) I guess I have a meeting this weekend. Ok, bye. Hello, yea. Hi, um, just a minute Ok. (long pause) Well um, I don't remember, but ah you called yesterday morning, right and um I think I--I--I sort of remember dreaming ah, the night before, it sort of came to me, ah, later, sometime after you called. But (laugh), I-—I, think I did have a short dream, um, but it was obscene (pause). Um, well, um. (I asked ifhe remembered it.) I guess so, um I'm talking out here in the hall, and it looks like someone is going to go by (laugh, pause). So what else is new (pause). Well, well the dream was sexual in nature (laugh, pause), and ah, ah, um it was homosexual in nature, ah, ah, ah, um it's not much. There's not much, I mean there's not much to the dream, ah, I was, I was involved, and that's it. Yea, but, I'm not, I'm not, ah, gay. Did that help any? Slept: Oh, pretty good, I guess. 126 Well, I'd a just as soon that you call at this time anyway. I mean, I mean ah, it's kind of alarming you know, that, that ringing (laugh). Yea um, oh 4:00. Oh I have a real mixed up schedule too. Um, let me see, like on Tuesday and Thursday, I--I have a class that ends at 3:00 and then I go to a class at 6:00. So I--I, usually stay there in the middle of campus. Maybe you should, um, no, no ah if I ah, I'll sure tell you if I had 'em. I mean ah, I--I, wouldn't care how obscene. I--I don't know why I don't, I--I went to the meeting on Sunday, and ah she just spoke to me for a few minutes. I hope it's fine with the people who give the credit. Ok. Slept: Um, I could have slept better, but my, my roommate ah, he ah well he opens the window at night (laugh) and the room was like a refrigerator and, ah, I, I didn't have enough blankets. If he does that tonight, I'm going to pound him. Ok, I'll--I'll be ready. Bye. Hello yea, hi, oh, ah. Pardon me. Ah, oh what time is it? Um oh, I don't remember right now (laugh). Ok, bye. Slept: pretty good. Hello, hi, oh, um, ah, no I think I slept pretty good. Um, hum, I don't remember anything right now (laugh). Slept: Pretty good, yea, how are you? Fine, sorry. Hello, hi, ah, whew, ah, um. I don't know. Um (pause), um hum (laugh) oh. Not that I remember. Um, as usual. Slept: I slept pretty good, just good. Ok, and if I remember anything I'll tell you tomorrow. Hello, hi, ah, oh, ah, um (pause). You know, um, I'm about the only person in this room that doesn't dream. But I, it doesn't make sense. There is no end to the dreams that they have (pause). Slept: Um, good. 127 Subject #12 Hi, I was up all night, I just got off work, I work on Sunday nights and every other weekend. Do you want me to tell you about something, I dreamed before? Ok, well I'll see what happens tonight. You can call me at this time tomorrow. I'm really sorry. Ok, bye. I can't remember my dreams, not that I can recall really um whew, I don't know I'm going to have to practice. I occasionally but, but it's I don't know um. She said that if, if you do do it frequently, you I guess, like if I do it more often like through this experiment, I guess a little more frequently, um I'll just have to concentrate on it before I go to sleep. Slept: All right, sorry, Ok. Hello, hello, yea, hi Sandy. Um yea (pause) um let's see, I dreamt I went out west with a couple friends of mine and um let's see, I don't know we just, I guess maybe it's just anticipation of a trip this summer, and um, we just went camping. I can't remember who it was though. Um (pause) and let's see (pause). It's really strange um I think we flew, that was really, instead of driving or anything. And um, let's see, what else. Um I can't think of anything else. Slept: Um pretty well, deeply like sleep. Like usual, that's why it took so many rings. Ok have a nice day, bye, bye. Um, hello, um yea, let me think for a minute. Um, yea I did, as a matter of fact um, who, it was a bad one too. I um, um, I dreamt that ah, I got sick, and I, it was a bad one. Um, let's see, something hap- pened that I couldn't go to my classes. And ah, I missed my test, do you know what I mean? And then I wasn't able to do any of the work. And all, I couldn't even finish up the term. Whew, I don't like that idea. Um, 128 let's see if I can remember anything else. It's really hard to remember when their compounded um, let's see. Sometime when you really think hard, you can think of them. Um, gosh (pause), I don't know if I can. 0k. Slept: Pretty well, thank you. Hello, yeah, hi, um, not that I can remember, oh unless I was dream- ing about Organic Chemistry, I might have been but, I have a test today. Good luck, ok, yeah ok, oh, bye, bye, good luck. Um, hello, hi, yes, yes, yup. Um I can only recall um, I don't know, maybe 1, maybe I'm just imagining it. But, I recall for some reason a harpoon. But I really don't know how it relates. Slept: Um, real good. Hello, yea, how ya doing. No I didn't, I worked last night. Just recently. Ok thanks bye, bye. All right, oh I you know as a matter of a fact, I thought I missed your call because you see I worked last night also. I was, every other weekend, I work Saturday and Sunday. Every other, other weekend, I work every Sunday. So I um thought that. I see, I got back to my room about 7:30 or so and I thought maybe I had missed your call or something. Ah not since um, like um, Saturday morning. No, I haven't kind of because I'm studying pretty intensely for two exams on Wednesday. Did you, I hope they went well. I can hardly wait until the time when I can, I can say the same. Ok fine, I'll sleep tonight I'm sure, there's nothing that can stop me. Ok, bye, bye. Hello, what's up. Um, let's see, hum, ooh (pause) um (pause) um, God they're so hard to think of. What did I dream of? (pause) Um, (had I really can't remember again. All right. Slept: Real good, ok, bYe, bye. 129 Hello, yea, yea, um (pause), hum (pause), Organic Chemistry is really on my mind. Um, it was kind of a restless night um, I really don't remember. Ok, ok, bye, bye. Hello, yea, um, let's see. Oh (pause) um (pause) let's see, um (pause) um I dreamt that I was playing some tennis (pause) um I think it was with some friends, or doubles or something like that. Um, I don't think it was just singles. Um, I don't know, I--I was playing a little better than I usually do. Um (pause) I think that's all I can remember. Slept: Pretty good, I needed it. Hello, yea, um (pause) hum, whew (pause), Oh (pause), um, whew (pause) um, I dreamt that like (pause) I don't know, it's like a little too vague. I can't quite remember. Slept: Really good. Subject #13 Hello, uh, uh, hi Sandy, um (laugh) I don't know, no—-no, I've been awake for a little while and I can't remember them. Let's see. I did have um, let me think, I can't remember yea, what happens if we can't remember them? Ok, ok, all right. Ok. Yea, I did. I had it was really wierd ones. I didn't really, I got up earlier this morning and I wrote a couple things that I remembered. Is that ok if I do that? And also like you called yesterday and--and I couldn't, I couldn't, I didn't have any dreams and I went back to bed and you know then when I woke up, you know, then I had one then. Do you want the to tell you that one? Ok. 1. Well um yesterday, the one I had it was really my roommate and I were standing on the stairwell out by our Inoom, and from, we could see him, you know, across, the thing and he had .sigmalled her down. And I went with her. And I, I don't know, and she “E15 gone then and I was going down the hall and I opened up the door, 130 or and knocked on this door to go into this room, and it was the wrong room, but like I couldn't see, I was trying to open my eyes and I couldn't see in this room. And they were telling me that I was in the wrong room and then so I then I went in and they said it was next door, so I walked over there, you know, and my roommate was sitting on the carpeting, and the room was like all changed around, all the furniture was moved out of the room, it was real neat and stuff. And like instead of talking to me, they were just ignoring me. It was really strange. I was getting mad at 'em. And then that's all I remember. 2. And then the one today, it doesn't really make much sense at all. I was standing at my house at ah, ah somewhere um, I was waiting to be picked up to go to something my orchestra director from when I was in high school was going to pick me up. And my dad kept calling me to to make sure I was home at 5:00 p.m. because he needed the car. But, I wasn't even taking the car, but he just told me to have it home. And then like they came and picked me up in this blue station wagon and my girlfriend was there, but she doesn't even play in the orchestra, but we were going anyways. And we went to this place and it's I think it was kind of like a gym or something. We were like sitting around the edges, you know, just waiting. I don't know what we were waiting for. And then um, there was some other people over on the other side, and then there was like a table. They were, they were going to call up the three winners. There was some kind of contest, these three girls, I don't know what it was. And they like read off their nanws. And then one of the girls wasn't even there, and then, the other (Hie, you know she must it was supposed to be, I guess it was some kind of 1Haauty contest or something. She just walks up and, you know, sat down 131 at this table. And, a couple peOple like, we didn't even know what was going on. We just kind of laughed at her. And that's all I remember (laugh). It sounds pretty wierd. I had a whole bunch of them last night, but that's the only one that I can remember. Slept: Pretty good. Hello, yea um, um, um, I was just having a dream now. Let me think, um I hate that when I wake up. Because then I forget 'em. Um, I was going somewhere in the car or going back, I'm trying to think and I was with a girlfriend (pause). Well, where did we go? Well we were getting ready to go shopping and something had just happened before that. It was really strange, but I can't remember what it was, I don't know, I'm not very helpful. Slept: Pretty good, slept better last night. Okee doke. (Called her back, wasn't there in morning.) Hello, Sandy, this doesn't make very much sense, but I can remember being in my house. I don't know when and, anyhow, and my mom was there and she was like check- ing off little things that we were doing. I can't remember what she, what it was she was checking off. And my best friend from high school was there, and um, she kept wanting a ride home, and I kept forgetting to give it to her. And I finally did at the end. And, and, there were other people there. I can just remember little things about it. Like my little brother was there and he was playing some dart game with a friend of his. But, they couldn't understand how to do it. And I was trying to show them how to do it. And then, um, my boyfriend was there and, um, he was telling me about somebody at school he knew, that was getting married. And it ended up that I knew the girl who this guy was marrying, or something, something real dumb. And, just little things kept happening, and then that's all I can remember. But, I just remember being in a house. Slept: 132 Pretty good. I found I can remember my dreams better if I lay around and think about them. Hello. I just had one, I remember a whole bunch of guys. Oh, let me think (pause). Oh gosh now I can't remember. I think there were a bunch of guys doing different things. It was so familiar just a few minutes ago. A bunch were going somewhere, but now I can't remember where. Oh. I just can't remember now, cause I woke up in the middle of it. Slept: Good. Hello, yes, hi. Um yea, I did. Let me think a second, um, I know I did. (pause) I can't think of them. Maybe I'll remember tomorrow. Slept: Yeah, fine. Can I tell you about them tomorrow? Bye. Oh, that's Ok. Yea I did. 1. I had one from the other day too. I just remember a little bit about it. I didn't tell you when you called, I think it was Monday or so. I'm um I wrote this stuff down. All I remember about that, was that um that I was at the swimming pool at home and my girlfriend was there and there were a whole bunch of kids running around swimming and stuff. And they kept begging us for food, and that's all I can remember about it. Then I had one this morning. 2. I was eating. I was at this big dinner with my parents and a whole bunch of relatives and stuff, were there. And um, um my mom and dad were there and they were giving me some kind of food to eat. It was like albatrose or something really weird, and it tasted really terrible. I remember that, and um then some, some guy there had made this fantastic desert, something weird, but I remember all this stuff. I wrote it down. And something was really great about this desert. And then, um, Oh, and then my cousins who were there um they were um, asking me about what they, what we gave 133 them for Christmas or something, and I couldn't remember what we had given 'em. And um, we didn't even give them anything, but in the Spring we had given them these seeds or something. They got really mad because I didn't remember what I had given 'em. And then, then I guess that's about all. Oh then, I kept, I thought they had a little brother or some- thing, and I was asking people where this little boy was; but I, I was afraid to ask or something because I thought, I don't know what happened to him. But they don't even have a brother. I don't know what happened to him. But they don't even have a brother. I don't know what it's about. 3. Then I had this other dream, this is really weird. A dream that you called me up and said something about the bad news that was going to happen tomorrow. And I, I asked you. I didn't know what you were talking about. You told me that the people who were doing this dream experiment were gonna die. And then I answered, this girl came to my door and I answered it, and she was all upset about it because she had heard about it, and everything. And then, um, these, more peOple started coming and, all these people who were supposed to be doing this experiment were coming to my room, and I didn't even know who they were. They weren't the people that I had ever seen before, but then I woke up. But something about we were going to die or something. It was really weird. That's all I remember. Slept: Good I think, I don't remember. Hello (she was in the bathroom for a minute). Ok. I'm sorry you had to wait so long, ok um, when I woke up I was having a really good dream and then as soon as I woke up, I couldn't remember. All I can remember is that my older brother was there and um, and we were, um, going some place to a house or something in the car, and then there were a lot of kids 134 there, and that's all that I can remember. Slept: Oh, ok after I got to sleep. I couldn't get to sleep last night at all. Okee doke, bye, bye. Hello, yea, um, yea I did, but (pause) I can't remember now (laugh), sorry. Slept: Isn't it bad when you call us up and we can't remember our dreams? Does that happen to a lot of other people? Yea, yea, ok. All right, ok, bye. Hi, ok I don't remember very much, I just remember that um, I was having one, but as soon as I woke up I forgot it. Are you calling tomorrow too? Slept: Good. Ok, bye, bye. Hello, yea, I can't remember, I feel terrible I can't remember them any more. I'll call you back later if I can remember them. Slept: Fine. Called back later: Ok, um this was after you called this morning, I went back to bed for a couple of hours, um, and when I woke up I can remember that I dreamed that it was raining really hard outside, and all of a sud- den there was this great big flash of lightning, and we were waiting for like, I remember that there were other people around, and we were waiting for like a thunder and nothing happened. And we went outside, and there was like a light on one of the buildings and it was like shooting out water, I guess lightning had hit this building or something, and this water was spraying out all over. And then, the dorms started to flood, and then there was this water piling up all over the side. And I remem- ber my, we went over to this other building, and my parents were in, it was like one of the other dorms, and my parents were in it, I don't know what they were doing there. And that's all I remember. 135 Subject #14 Hello, this is Karen, hi. I don't know, I'm just trying to think about it (laugh). Let's see. God, it's just so horrible, I have dreams all the time and now I can't think (pause). Let's see (pause) (laugh) (pause) l. I had a dream about me and my girlfriend, but now I can't remember. All I can remember is that like we were in the room, you know, in the dorm room; but that's all I can remember, I know we were talking about something (pause). That's about something (pause). That's about it though (laugh) uh, uh, I'll just think about it because like usually I dream all the time and I usually remember it. You know, so maybe if I concentrate more on it, maybe tomorrow I'll remember more on it, maybe tomorrow, I'll remember more. (laugh) Um this is fine. Ok, sounds good, good bye. Hello, this is Karen. I remember my dreams. I was with my girlfriend and we went downstairs to my brother's floor, and I shaved Mark Solek's eyebrows off. That's it (laugh). I know it was kind of wild, but um a couple of nights ago he came upstairs and we were talking about his eye- brows, you know, it was really weird because, and you know, they connect in the middle of his head. You know? So that was probably why I was dreaming about it (laugh). Slept: Sleep, um pretty good. I went to sleep really quick, I was really surprised. I woke up this morning at 7:00 for because I wanted to remember then you know, and then I just sat in bed and thought about it, and then I wrote it down. So I'd remember when you called, I had a dream, and as soon as the phone rang, I woke up, you know how you wake up so shook up that everything just went out of my mind. That's good yea. Ok, bye, bye. 136 Hello, no I didn't have anything to dream. I was just thinking about that now. But they weren't too hard to think about. But all the dreams that you know, all dreams, the dreams I told you, they're all the dreams I have like just before I wake up. And now like now I woke up, you know, about an hour ago, and just laying around. And I didn't have any dreams, it was because I woke up, you know, cause I was just wondering if there was like a difference. Yea, if there was two kinds of dreams that you have, well I'm sorry I didn't have anything to dream today. I'll see you tomorrow. Slept: Ok, good. Hello, yea oh, hi. I'm ok, ah, ah (laugh). I had a dream, um that my girlfriend and I received a package. And we were all excited, but there was nothing good in it (laugh), (long pause). How is everybody doing today? Are they remembering? Slept: Real good. I've been sleep- ing good all week, I've been going to bed really, really fast. Hello, yeah, oh hi how are you. Ok. I can't remember today's dream, but remember yesterday when you called, after you called, I went back to bed and I had a dream. So do you want to hear that one? Ok. It was a good one. Um I had a dream that we were sleeping, me and my girlfriend and that my other girlfriend Nancy came up and she woke us up. And it was really late, and she was supposed to wake us up early, but it was late. And we were mad at her, and I said, "Well Nancy, why didn't you wake us up earlier?" It was last night, and she goes "well I didn't think it mattered." 50 well I thought, no big deal. So I thought well I'll go to breakfast now. And she looks at me and she goes, "Well, I'm sorry we're not. I'm going now, I'm going to go to a baseball game." (Just a minute please.) Ok, and I'm back. And um, so, then she got up and she went to the baseball game. And me and my other girlfriend we just sat 137 here, we were really mad. She pimped us. So that was it. Slept: I don't even remember, I went to bed kind of late last night. Hi, huh, hello, not that I can remember right now. Slept: Um good (laugh). Thank you. Ok, ok, ok, bye, bye. Hello, hi Sandy, how are you? Ok. Um yeah, but I can't remember today's but I remember yesterday's, ok? I dreamed that Sherrie, my girl, girlfriend down the hall was going home because she was sick, and she was leaving for good, like she wasn't going to be back, and she had all her suitcases packed and stuff like that. And that was it. Slept: Average, I just went to bed. Normal I guess, ok, all right, bye, bye. Hi, what happened today? That's what I thought. Something like that. It happens to all of us. That's good that you didn't call until tonight because I remember my dreams now. All right, are you ready? Ok well I had a dream that we were in my room, and this guy that I don't even know, but like I see 'em all the time. He was in my room, and he was killing all these bugs and I was screaming. And there was all kinds of bugs, like bugs I've never even seen before. There was like this bug, yellow and black striped one and stuff. And my roommate was sitting on the chair talking on the phone, and she didn't even care, and I'm screaming and this guy was killing all these bugs. So that was it. Slept: Um how I, I don't know, I don't even remember anymore it takes me awhile to fall asleep. But then I sleep really good. Hello, hi, no, I did, but I can't remember 'em. Slept: Crummy. Ok, bye, bye. Yes, I did. I was on campus athLELLL,‘but nothing was the same. I remember walking by the Chemistry building with my girlfriend and she was 138 dressed up really fancy, and I was just dressing in jeans and stuff. I remember the bus just passed us by, and we were waiting for it. That's all I remember. Slept: Real good. Hi, yes, I don't remember very much, I just, ah, remember that um, my girlfriend and I were in, I thought it was like a kitchen but then we were taking a shower. It was a round table like a cafeteria table, and we were just sitting around it. And I don't remember what was going on or nothing. That was all. It could have been in a home or it could have been in the cafeteria, I can't remember. Slept: Um, good. Hello, yea, hi, no I just woke up, and I can't even think of anything right now. Oh that's a bummer. Slept: Real good. 0k thank you, good bye. Subject #15 You know I really don't remember (laughed). I know that probably doesn't help you much. I just can't remember. Slept: Comfortable I guess-—maybe deep. Um, um, jeez, it was a, I don't know if it was a dream or not (laugh), um, something about a high school friend. Came up here and started going through my stuff, trying to find out what the situation was or something or other. Yea, kind of, um, like she came up and started going through some of my stuff, you know, and oh gosh I haven't spoken to her in about 8 months, well she hasn't spoken to me and trying to find out what the situation was between me and ah my boyfriend, and then you called (laugh). Slept: Oh, all right I guess, pretty good. I've been waiting from about 6:30 for you to call. Well, just Wednesday's I have an 8 o'clock so it doesn't matter now. But ah, no I 139 can't remember anything you know, like I even set my alarm early to see maybe if I could wake myself up for something but I can't remember anything at all, sorry. Slept: Oh, pretty good, sound straight through. Ah, dream lady (laughed). Gee, um, it was kind of weird, ah I even got up in the middle of the night to turn on the light because I thought I was running out of time for something, um, sigh, I don't know, it was just like, I was running behind and I just was in such a hurry to catch up with everything, and I was oh you know, all upset because I was getting behind, I jumped out of bed and ran to the phone or ran to the door or something, I don't remember, my roommate said I was crazy, she turned on the light and said what the hell's wrong with you (laugh). About two in the morning, so ah, I don't know, that, that's about all I can remember. It was I was, just you know uptight cuz Iwas behind or something, ok? Slept: Oh, pretty good, otherwise. Ah, oh, jeez, sigh (heavy), Jesus, I'm trying to remember, I can't remember anything, yawn, um, Jesus, you know, something about home, shoveling snow. I remember that and trying to crack up my sis. (Yawn) And I don't remember anything else, ok? Slept: Pretty good. Hum, oh, hum, jeez, I can't really remember, anything, um, gosh, I can't (laugh), sorry. Slept: Pretty solemnly. Um, shoot, you know I don't remember any dreams but, sigh, I didn't sleep too well, um I started talking, talking in my sleep again, my room- mate thought I was nuts (laughs). I don't remember exactly what it was I was just constantly talking, she woke me up, she finally told me to shut up, ok? 140 Oh, Jesus, I missed you yesterday morning. No, I haven't been dream- ing at all, I don't know what's wrong but I can't remember anything, is that good or bad? Oh, all right, then I won't feel bad about it. Um I slept pretty good. Oh, ah, jeez, I didn't get into bed until late last night. Ah it's because a quiz, this morning, I've got a test this morning and I dreamt that I failed it, pretty bad, (sigh), paper's flying all over the place but I failed it (laughs), but and that's about, I don't know I felt really bad about it, other than that. (long pause) Slept: Pretty good. Subject #16 I don't know, I was walking down the street with some girl and I don't know the alarm went off, yea, that's all I can remember. Slept: Oh, pretty good, yea. Um, yea, I used to run ah cross country and I dreamt that I was racing through a field ah, with a bunch of people and I don't know it was all mixed up 'cuz ah, I don't know like space and time they are all mixed up 'cuz people weren't there and it was a different place and stuff. Um people, people that I used to run with (pause), well people were there that I never used to run with from up here that used to be in high school and ah I'd run in a field that I'd it was near like my house but I'd never run there before. Slept: Real good, I don't know, I woke up ah like before the alarm went off but I slept, you know, ah, I don't know real good 'til then. Hello, this is Dave, no I didn't dream anything and I slept really poor, yea I got and called and nothing was there. 141 Ah, I--I, don't think I, well, I think I dreamed, dreamt, but I don't remember anything. I don't know, I slept good though, so, sorry (laughed). I called Dave at 7:20 a.m. and his roommate told me that he had already left the dorm because he had a test at 8 o'clock. Um, yea, I dreamt I was, ah, going to testify in court and ah some- body shot me with a shotgun and, it wasn't too good, I woke up (laugh) but that was it. I don't know she said ah, my dreams are going to take on a new meaning but that, that didn't happen too much for me. Slept: Um, good. I, no dream though. I don't know. I didn't dream last Wednesday either so. Slept: Like a log. Um, I don't know, ah, I was on an island, with a whole bunch of peo— ple um, it was during ah, World War II and ah I don't know 'cuz ah what else, it was, I don't know, it was pretty much a regular life it was sort of weird, um it was a lot of people, 'cuz, I don't know, ah were afraid of people, ah, people landing, I mean, like you know, ah, ah, yes like Ger- mans landing or something you know, and ah, I don't know, that's about it. How'd you sleep? Um, good. Ah, no, ah, I didn't have any dreams, (pause), I really feel like I've let you down, haven't had too many dreams. Oh yea like this time, this one time I don't know, I'm not sure if it was even a dream, there was this lady who walked in and I don't know I felt like I was supposed to stand up and, but I didn't. I don't know if it was a dream or what. Slept: Good. 142 Subject #17 Um (heavy sigh), I can't think of one (long pause), you know, I didn't have one. Sorry. Slept: Oh, I don't know, I don't know. Um, let's see, I was thinking, I was dreaming about my next door neighbors and um they built, they have a pool and they um they built, they put it inside and I was thinking about my little, oh um my little brothers and I were like over there and we were helping them like building this garage up over tOp in the pool and stuff and we were like cleaning up all the mess around in the garage over the pool and stuff like that. That's about it. How'd I sleep? Yes, real good. Um, see, I was dreaming about my cousins, they were, they were over visiting me, my cousins from California, and a friend was over, you know. I can't even picture the room that we were in you know, and um and we were just over and um then my sister came over and we were visiting and just talking around it was about 11:30 at night and we were just sitting around listening to albums and stuff like that. Slept: Oh, not real good not too bad, just you know, kind of half and half. Um, numbers, numbers, numbers, that's all I thought, dreamed about last night because I got a math test this morning (laughed), and that's all that's been in my head all night and I slept really terrible, ok? Um I was dreaming about floods, yea, that's it. Slept: Really good. Um, no I can't remember right now, in my interview Friday I talked to um, the girl over there and I told her I had problems remembering in the morning, so, she said that if I could remember later on like I do often, to jot them down and tell ya the next morning, OK? Slept: Real good. Lhu I got yesterday's wrote down here, see yesterday I was, I was thinking about my chemistry lab a little bit, and then um we were doing 143 some hitchhiking and we were going to Lewiston, and we got in back of a truck and there was a bunch of tires in the back of the truck and there was a blanket in back of the truck and Off we went and then really the only thing I remember about this morning right now is we were ah we were plant- ing some plants and that's all I can remember right now maybe I'll remem- ber some more later. I'll write it down ok? Oh, ah, me, I'm just sleep— ing and I don't talk good when I'm sleeping. Slept: Really good. Um, I really, I don't think I had any dreams last night 'cuz I was just, I've been thinking about this test that I got, I really, the night before a test, I really, that's all I think about and I don't sleep very good either. Subject #18 Oh, I tried to remember it (yawned), I know I had one, oh no. Slept: All right. Ok, hold on, I got to take the thing outside so I won't wake up my roommate. Oh yea, I dreamed about ok this moon, you know how, you know how the full moon is? Ok, when it's big and orange I get scared of it so, it's true but it was in my dream, so ah I was dreaming that pieces keep on adding on and on to it and all of a sudden it blew up and stuff like that (long pause). Ok, let's see, another part um, that's all, I had other dreams but I forgot them too. Slept: Pretty good. Ok, I--I, was at this party 'cuz we're giving one this Saturday, our hall and this dude that's in my 082 class kept following me around and but I didn't see him, you know, I wasn't paying attention to him, I noticed he was following me around and at the end of the dance I turned around and he had, ah the same tee-shirt I had and I started screaming, that's all I can remember. Slept: Pretty good. 144 Ah, let's see, oh, I, ah, I had two. Ok, the first one, I was dream- ing about this class and we were talking about what the German's did to the Jews and that's all I can remember, and the second one was ah, this is, this is, this is weird, ok, ah, I had this dream before in the hospital, when I was in the hospital, my um father's, oh, where we used to live, the backyard was used as a dump for a dump where they cement, right? So every- body would bring in their little truck loads and dump it. So ah, there was this you know what a pegasus is, don't you? A pegasus, half man, half horse, oh, all right, lived next door and he came and became and ah, he came to our, our, house while I was bringing everyone to the little nest, see my father gave me the job of cleaning the stuff up and piling it, the stuff in a heap, so he gave me this long slimy mop to do that, anyway he came over to my house and said hi to both of us, he was, he was a, he was a, he had a white man's face but it was a black face and he had green teeth and all that stuff so he said hi to us, the pegasus, um, so as soon as he walked away my father said that's my kind, now that's my kind of man, I couldn't understand that for nothing, that was the end of my dream. Slept: Pretty good. Yea one, short one, Ok um, I was dreaming about, ah, one of my friends took me over to this friend, dude's house and the dude looked like he belonged in the 19th century because he had that kind of face and all that so we were talking for a while and all of a sudden he pulled out, pulled out this white thing looked like one of those big stogies and lit it up and it was weed (laughed), that's all I remember. Slept: Good. Ah, no (heavy sigh). 145 I didn't even have, I--I kept forgetting them (laughs), Ok. Slept: All right. Um, oh, I can remember these two people were fighting, that I know in the cafeteria, so I broke it up and the other girl who was a little crazier than the first came after me with a knife and I slammed her door in the back doors um, I slammed her hand in the back doors and I beat her up good 'til she was in the hospital for a little while and her mother came up and started some stuff in front of my door so I kicked her butt too, that's the end of my dream. Slept: All right. Oh, let me see, um, I had a dream about that march that ah OBA sup- pose to be putting, doing today, it's just a march, I mean like there were some policemen standing outside and that was it. Slept: All right. Subject #19 Oh, let's see, I was dreaming I was at the coke machine getting some coke and there was this new manager and we didn't like him at all. Well, we drank a lot of cokes, we were ripping them off. Slept: Ok, light at first, couldn't get to sleep, then it was all right. Ah (heavy sigh), do you want me to call you at a later time? I don't know if I can remember them then if I can't remember them when I wake up. Let's see (sigh), ah, I can't remember any of them for last night. Slept: I slept good. Yes, I remember this one now. The, my friend and I were supposed to be driving a car but it wasn't a car, it was like, see we used to have three people in our room and our beds were bunked, so the car was like the three bunk beds, so then um, she parked it over on, over on the side street and left and I was just sitting there watching and there was this lady across the street in a, I think it was a laundry mat and ah she was 146 screaming and yelling and then this car pulls up and this girl jumps out, she lives across the hall from me, and it was her and then it was her mother in there and she was saying something about her mother having fits and then she took her mother out the laundry mat and ah got in the car then she started crying but ah she was mimicking this girl we used to play around with, the way she was talking when she was crying. Slept: Good. Yes, I did, I'm trying to remember 'cuz I woke up earlier this morn- ing and I had to go to the bathroom and I remembered it then and I said I was going to remember what the dream was, ah, (pause) I think it, it was (pause), (sigh), me and a friend were, we were going someplace, um (pause), it was a real common place like to a store or something, and that's ah, let's see, (pause), that's all I can remember right now. Slept: I slept good. Oh golly, ah, sigh, I don't know, for some reason since I'm doing this experiment, I can't seem to remember my dreams. Slept: Um, good. Ah, sigh, I can't remember anything right now. Slept: Good. Um, (heavy sigh), um, (sigh), ok, ah (pause). I dreamed that um, I went to ah, store, like a department store, like, you know Hudsons, to buy (pause), I don't know, what was I buying? I don't know what it was I was buying, and then um when I went by this counter, I don't know what they were, they started dancing around and talking to me, the objects on the counter and that's all I can remember of that, all right, how come I didn't hear from you yesterday. I went to breakfast and then I came back up and I, it was too late, I didn't know I had been gone that long, um, oh, 147 I stayed up all night um, Sunday to Monday, so I didn't sleep at all. Slept: Good. Subject #20 I dreamt about the experiment mostly that I can remember and it was really strange 'cuz I had other things mixed in it like ah (pause), I had to report to this woman um I don't know out somewhere and it turns out it was my mother when I got there and um (pause) that's like one segment and the next thing I can remember is um being in a car in a parking lot, it was sliding sideways and um (long pause), next thing was ah being in a cafeteria and there was a thing involved in this whole ad, I think that belonged to one dream because there was ah a feeling that I had that I kept being warned about this one person and it was a person that I thought about yesterday that I used to know when I was really little, he was kinda hyper, I don't know it was really strange, he was set apart from every- body and um (pause) I was aware of him in the dream and he was there but he didn't do anything, you know, so it was kinda mixed up that's about all I remember. Slept: Not very good. I've been thinking and thinking and I cannot remember this morning, um you know, I know I dreamt but I just cannot remember what it was about or anything, um, we were told that if that happened that later on we should write it down, if we remember, should I do that or is it not. Slept: Fine, really good. Um, ok, got a whole bunch, um, ok, I dreamed about my ah psych mid- term, that I had last night and can remember standing in Farm Lane's intersection where you walk across, you know, little pedestrian thing, and that's all I remember there and also I had this dream that I guess it was five to seven or something like that, that's what time my psych class 148 is but it was the day that I was supposed to have my, ah, two other finals and I hadn't studied and it was already five to seven and I'm going oh no, I didn't study, you know and all my finals are today and, the whole bit, and then I dreamed of this house that I was standing back and looking at it and there was smoke going by, that's all I can remember about that and I was at a party or something like that after a while and I think it was in that house, that's it. Slept: Pretty good. I can't remember anything, I did dream but I don't remember what it was. Yea, it didn't work that last day and I've been thinking about it, you know all day and I haven't been able to come up with anything. Slept: Good, really, you know, I was, you know, good. Um, ok, today I don't have anything, it's really weird, every other day (laughs), but anyway, yesterday I had a whole bunch, um, ok, I dreamed, um let me think back now, for a sec (laughs), um, ok back on a whole bunch of high school friends, and suddenly I'm looking through a yearbook and I dreamed of these apple orchards and I can't remember what I was doing in them or anything, I just remember being there, and (sigh) I was buying paper in a book store and I was out at White Lake where I used to live, we used to live on a lake it was in the back yard of our Old house, and I was on the swimming team and that's about it, you know, I was in a race and (laughs), the whole bit but that was all yesterday's. No, ah, uh, and I slept really good the night before and pretty lousy last night. Just a minute, I just woke up and I have to think, um, I remember yesterday's I remembered after the day yesterday, um, you know, the night 149 before's. I dreamt about (pause), um, Troy, the city that I live, my boyfriend is applying for a job there and it was all about their budget and if they were going to get it or not, the city that is and um, I was kind of anxious, that's about the feelings that I felt about that, ok and (pause), um, oh, I know what I dreamt, um about my boyfriend's baseball game here, there or um the intramural games, ah (pause), um let's see, I think I--I, didn't, nothing happened, I was just, you know, at the game and anxious, turned out ok, that's about it. Slept: Good. Ok, I can't remember a thing again, and um, also but I remember something from yesterday that I didn't tell you, um, ok, I it's really vague, I was, I remember now that I was being chased by somebody, um, I don't know who it was and ah, I went into this Turkish bath, it was um, a place where I was, you know, running away from the person, and that's about all I can remember but I was really scared, that's about it. Slept: Really good. Um, ok, I dreamt that I was babysitting for my nephew and um, in a department store (she sort of laughed when she said department store), and um, I think I was going to work there, I was thinking about a summer job, for the day and that was probably what I was thinking about and that's it (laughs). Slept: Good. Hi, ah, I don't remember again (pause), ok? I know I dreamt but I just, I don't know, just can't think of what it is. Slept: Oh, pretty good. Um, I just woke up again, I can't remember but I feel like, you know, I know I dreamt, could I possibly call you back again, like later today? 150 (About 15 minutes later, Marge called me back after she remembered her dream.) Ok, um, I was at this religious retreat, we were outside and there were three peeple, a guy, a girl and I and all I had to do was stand there and just let our bodies sway, and hit and let knock each other and stuff and um, and then afterward there was all this talk about being saved and I kept saying no--no, I don't want to (laughs), thanks anyway and um, and the phone rang, that's about what happened, we were at the inside then at this desk signing our names, you know, to what we did and um (pause), there was just a lot of persuasion there and I just kept saying no, that's ok (laughs), that's about it. Slept: Good, real good. Subject #21 Ah, huh, you know what, I don't know if this has ever happened before, I think it was the anxiety Of having to tell you that I dreamt, I woke up about 5 minutes ago and just sat there, yea, no, if I think of it, I'll tell you but, by tomorrow, you know, I shouldn't be doing that, I don't usually do that (I assured her that it was no problem if she couldn't remember her dreams), it was so weird though (laughs), I mean like I just you know, all right I just woke up like 5 minutes ago. Slept: Fine. Oh, yea, wait a second and I'll get (long pause), ok, do I have to go into full detail for you? I can remember it if I can just give you a quick description, ok, um, let me see, um, I went to this deserted store, ok, people were after me, but not chasing me, I just had the feel- ing, ok (laughs). Ok, it was really weird, and then um I got there (pause), and like when I left they gave me this package and um I it turned 151 out to be a bomb (laughs), (there was a strange noise over the phone and she said), "what was that?" Ah, it turned out to be a bomb and then let's see it scared, this was earlier, it scared me, and then I woke up, I don't know how it finished, like I don't know if it, blew up or, or what, ah, hum, I'm losing my voice, you know? And there's more to what I mean, like um, you know, ok, there was three other people and we were in two separate cars (pause), um and I think that's about it but it, it scared me and so I don't know how it ended, 'cause I woke up. Slept: Fine, after that, no, I slept fine, ok? Ok, bye. Oh, yea, I gotta gotta cold, um, yea, I was skiing, I was at Aspen or something and there were, there was ah bunch of us, me and my friends and we went up to the top of this big hill and, I got really scared and I messed up half way down and I fell down and I broke my leg, yea, that's about it. Slept: I didn't go to bed 'til late, but real good. It was about, ok, I was sleeping, this is in the dream, I was sleep- ing and I heard a noise and um I got up and it was down in the bathroom so I went into the bathroom and it came from behind the shower curtain, so I opened up the shower curtain and there, this is really weird, there was a lady laying there with really long fingernails and she was um, petting our dog that had died like 2 years ago, and ah, it really scared me so I went to get my parents and their door was locked, and so I ran, she started chasing me, so I ran into my bedroom and I tried, and I looked the door and I tried to call the police and then I woke up. Slept: Very good. 152 Ok, um, I don't really remember everything, but it was just, um, I was dreamt that l was parachuting out of a plane and that's about it, but it was just the experience of um, the free fall and everything. Slept: Fine. Oh (long sigh), I don't know, you got me good this time (laughs). (Sally seemed extremely tired and almost in a daze, so I asked her if she thought about it for a few minutes if she'd be able to remember anything), oh, I don't know, but you can try it--LATER: Ok, I can remember about walking through the woods, and it being fall, but I can't remember what happened. Slept: Fine. How are you this morning? Oh, it went pretty good last night (laughs) it wasn't very exciting but, ah, I dreamt that, at home this summer seeing all my friends (yawns), again and just, um, doing things like um, oh God, we went, went out on a boat, went out to the bar at night (laughs), (sighs), that's just about it, just about seeing all my friends again. Ok? Slept: Fine, really good. Ok? I dreamt that a friend of mine and I went over to ah, for some rea- son, I don't know the reason why I went over to live in Rome, Italy and all the different stuff 'cuz they had like ah the currency and different lifestyles and different times they eat and everything and then (sigh) let me see (pause), that's about it except for um, I can picture the person, the girl beside me but I never like really saw her face you know, like I couldn't tell you which one of my friends it was, and that's that's about it, it was like, her face wasn't like if I looked at her face it wasn't black, I just don't think I ever really, you know, determined what friend it was, you know, I just that like they were there, ok? Slept: Fine. 153 I don't remember what it was. Slept: Real good. 1 just um, dreamt that it was summer (laughs), and that, you know, that's about it (clears throat). I'm getting a sore throat, Oh dear, yea, that's pretty much all. Slept: I'm getting a cold so it's so-so. Subject #22 I just dreamed that I was back in South Carolina, I really can't remember anything else. Slept: Like a rock (laughs). I can't remember anything, I think I'm still asleep, I--I, was rest- less most of the night and then I think I finally fell asleep about 5:00. Ah yea, I dreamed that ah I was down by the Red Cedar and I was with some friends and like there was something floating in the water, but I didn't know what it was or anything, that's all I remember. Slept: Pretty good. Do you want it just like ah, if we can tell you about it, do you want us to tell you about 'em, just tell you basically what it was about? Ok, ok well, I had two, one of them was, ok, I was, I was sitting in the room with ah my roommate and two of my girlfriends, and ah my roommate was high, and she when she gets high, she gets evil, she was looking at every- body really, mean, you know, we started laughing at her, so she hit me and I stuffed her under the couch (laughs), and then the other one is ah, I went home and ah, a lot of really strange things that happened like, they added an upstairs to our house and left half of the roof off, and ah (laughs), this did happen up there, and ah I was I left my suitcase at the airport the whole time I was there, and, some people from Michigan State were there that I know and never, you know, like be at my house and strange people were coming by and I was just talking to them. Slept: I 154 really slept good last night, I couldn't um, we had um, a couple of drinks so, it was a nice night. I don't remember anything, if I remember, I'll write it down. Slept: Good. Ok, my dream yesterday was ah, a beaut, and last night I dreamed that I was in Atlanta, and that was it. Slept: Good. I don't remember (sigh) ah, if I write it, if I remember I'll write it down, ok? Slept: Good. Ok, let's see, I didn't give you one for, I just have, I have the night I forget and I didn't write that night, and that's I dreamed about this band, and I had the same dream again last night (pause), yea, it's Mother's Finest, this group I know and they have an album coming up so I reckon, I'm waiting for them to send it to me (laughs). Slept: I slept really nice. Yea, I dreamt about my, ah, my girlfriend's sister coming again, that's it. Slept: I slept pretty good. Huh? I don't know. Slept: I'm still asleep. Subject #23 Oh, I dreamt about the test I'm about to take, this morning, that was it. Slept: Restless. Ah, yea, I dreamed about traveling (pause), home, in Detroit. Slept: Very good. Oh, my dreams, oh, ok, um, this is for last night then, right? Last night I don't recall (pause). Slept: Oh, good. Ah, I didn't dream, tonight. Slept: I slept good. 155 How you doing? Yea, mm, yesterday, I can remember what I dreamt, I clreamt about my grandmother. Dreamt last night about taking a long trip. II didn't know. It was just a trip, well, everything was just foreign to the. Slept: I slept good. Ok, um, last, I wanted to tell you about my um, my dream from yester-
