Copyright by GERTRUDE ANN HUISMAN HUIZENGA 1979 AN INDEX OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF SINGING BULLETIN 1945-1954 By Gertrude Ann Huisman Huizenga A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Music 1979 ABSTRACT AN INDEX OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF SINGING BULLETIN 1945-1954 By Gertrude Ann Huisman Huizenga The National Association of Teachers of SinginggBulletin, the official magazine of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Incorporated, was first published in 1944. From that time until the year 1955, the contents of The Bulletin were not indexed either in The Bulletin itself or in any other scholarly index. In 1955 The Bulletin first was indexed in The Music Index. In 1966 The Music Article Guide also included The Bulletin in the periodicals which it covered. In 1969 the International Repertory of Music Literature Abstracts first included abstracts of articles in The Bulletin. Many libraries hold copies of the early years of The Bulletin (Volumes 1 through 10, 1945-1954) which are not indexed anywhere. Fur- thermore, these same early volumes have been reissued in two bound vol— umes by Johnson Reprint Corporation of New York and London and are cur- rently available to the public. It was to make the contents of these volumes more readily acces- sible to scholars and teachers of singing that this dissertation was written. It is an index covering Volume 1 (October 1944) through Vol— ume X No. 4 (November 1954). The index has been divided into two parts, the first of which is an index of authors of articles contained in The Gertrude Ann Huisman Huizenga Bulletin. The second part is a subject index of the articles in The Bulletin. Such things as membership lists, directory lists of chapters, chapter notes, competition notices, etc. are not included. Editorials, reports on workshops and conventions, and letters to the editor are in- cluded only if they appear to be of universal rather than dated or local interest. The subject index is not limited to key words in the titles, but includes key concepts, persons and/or topics mentioned in the arti- cles as well. Both indexes are arranged in alphabetical order and fre- quent use is made of cross-referencing. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A word of thanks is in order to Mr. Gene Greenwell, who first called to my attention the need for an index to the early volumes of The National Association of Teachers of SinginggBulletin, and to Dr. Edgar L. Kirk, my faculty advisor, for his support and assistance dur- ing the writing of this dissertation. I also wish to acknowledge my deep gratitude to my good friend, Dr. Beverly Jane Klooster, for her invaluable encouragement and help throughout the duration of the project. Finally, I wish to thank my husband Everett L. Huizenga for his encour- agement and support which enabled me to bring this project to a success- ful conclusion. ii Introduction . Author Index . Subject Index Bibliography . TABLE OF CONTENTS iii Page 18 87 INTRODUCTION The National Association of Teachers of Singing was organized in Cincinnati, Ohio, in March of 1944. The first issue of The National Association of Teachers of Singinngulletin, termed the Official Maga- zine of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Inc., was pub— lished in October of that year. From the time of the first issue until the year 1955, the contents of The Bulletin were not indexed either in The Bulletin itself or in any scholarly index. In 1955 The Music Index first included The Bulletin among the periodicals which it indexed, and The Bulletin has been included there to the present time. Since 1966, when the first issue of The Music Article Guide appeared, The Bulletin also has been included in that index. Finally, in 1969 RILM (Inter— national Repertory of Music Literature) Abstracts first included ab— stracts from articles in The Bulletin. Many libraries hold copies of the early years of The N.A.T.S. Bulletin (Volumes 1 through 10, 1945-1954) which are not indexed any- where. Furthermore, these same early volumes have been reissued in two bound volumes by the Johnson Reprint Corporation of New York and London with the permission of The National Association of Teachers of Singing, and are currently available to the public. Since no index of these early years of The N.A.T.S. Bulletin is available, the material contained in them is largely lost to scholars. It was to make the contents of these volumes more readily accessible to scholars and to teachers of singing, who have added the reprints of early Bulletins to their libraries, that this dissertation was written. It is an index covering Volume I (October 1944) through Volume X No. 4 (November 1954) of The N.A.T.S. Bulletin. The index has been di- vided into two parts, the first of which is an index of authors of ar- ticles contained in The Bulletin. The second part is a subject index of the articles in the journal and the death notices of National Asso- ciation of Teachers of Singing members. Such things as membership lists, directory lists of chapters, chapter notes, competition notices, .353. are not included. Editorials, reports on workshops and conven- tions, and letters to the editor are included only if they appear to be of universal rather than dated or local interest. The subject index is not limited to key words in the titles, but includes key concepts, per- sons and/or topics mentioned in the articles as well. Following are several examples: Tibbett, Lawrence Vibrato rate of "The Physiology of Vibrato.’ Westermann, Kenneth N. IX, No. 3 (Jan.-Feb. 1953), p. 18. Vocal cords Motion pictures of "Falsetto—The Key to the High Voice." Noss, William E. V, No. 3 (Jan.-Feb. 1949), p. 5. Vocal pedagogy Tongue action, exercises for "Tongue Action and Diction." MacCollin, Paul. IV, No. 4. (Feb.-March 1948), p. 3. Wind instruments Effects of study on vocal production "The Effects of Wind Instrument Training Upon Vocal Production." Charles, Henry. III, No. l (Sept.-0ct. 1946), p. 3. For the author index, authors are listed in alphabetical order. Where no author is given, the article is listed under "anonymous." If the author was given in the journal as N.A.T.S. Editor or any of several ‘_m -5- N.A.T.S. committees, these are listed as author(s). Following the au- thor's name, the title of the article, the volume number, date and page of the journal are given in that order. Following are examples: Anonymous. "What the Vocal Teacher Expects of the Pupil." VII, No. l (Sept.-Oct. 1950), p. 9. Arkebauer, George Gerhard. "Phonetics," V, No. 3 (Jan.-Feb. 1949), p. 6. Armet, Hollace E. "American Song Literature — The beginnings of American Song," VII, No. 5 (April-May 1951), p. 12. For the subject index, the major subject categories are listed in alphabetical order. The articles under a subject heading are listed in alphabetical order according to title, following the practice of The Music Index. Also following the practice of The Music Index, articles ' and "the" are ignored in the process of alphabetizing the such as "a,' entries. Following the title, the author, volume, number, date and page(s) are listed in that order. Where subheadings make the nature of an entry clearer, such subheadings are also listed in alphabetical order. Cross-references are used where deemed appropriate. Following are sev— eral examples: Vocal pedagogy Scientific approach to "Empirical Method Versus the Scientific." Wollman, Anna M. IX, No. 4 (March—April 1953), p. 20. "The Key to Coordination." Lester, John. VIII, No. 2 (Nov.-Dec. 1951), p. 4. "Standardization of Voice Studio Terminology." Hobart, Henry. VII, No. 3 (Jan. 1951), p. 9. "Teaching Objectives." Taylor, Bernard, VIII, No. l (Sept.-Oct. 1951), p. 6. Since singing, the voice, vocal pedagogy etc. are the main inter— ests of the journal, a great many entries could be made under such sub- ject headings. If there are extensive entries which may be clearer if entered with subheadings, the category may be listed independently rather than under the heading of "Singing." An example of such a cate- gory is "Breathing." Such entries are then cross-referenced under "Singing, breathing" with the note: "See Breathing." AUTHOR INDEX Adler, Kurt Herbert.
