Ry Lyman Carrier, 1.902, Michigan Agricultural College. THESIS Cattle breeding, although one of the most important and profitable branches of Arriculture, as a science dates from comparatively recent times. The first steps towards improving the conmon wild stock were made about one hundred and fifty years ago. But these attempts were made by a few individuals with widely different ideals in view. This together with various climatic conditions and the many purposes for which the animals were produced has led to the multiplicity of breeds and the variety of types existing in some of the so-called pure breeds today. The one thing that has done more perhaps than any other for the improvement of our cattle and the fixing of distinct types has been the organization of the various cattle breeding associations and the publishing of their Herd Registers. As might be expected the idea of co-operation and organization in connection with cattle breeding originated in En;land where the greatest improvements have been made, The first registry to be published was the English Short Horn Herd Book in 1822. This was followed by the American Short Horn Herd Book in 1843. Since that time there have been twelve Other cattle breeding associations, the Devon, the Galloway, the pereford, the Polled Durham, the Red Polled, the Aberdeen Angus, the Holstein-Friesian, the Dutch Belted, the Guernsey, the Jersey, the Ayrshire, and Brown Swiss established in America. Each association has two general ohjects in view, viz., to keep animals of a particular breed from being crossed with animals of other breeds or inferior stock and to decide on an ideal type Of animal which all of its members strive to attain in their own herds. The qualifications of animals for reyvistry in the various assOciations are as variable as are the breeds themselves. When the associations were first organized individual excellence counted for as much or more than did the breeding but as the breeds in- creased in numbers this plan had to be discarded and now nothing but the progeny of registered stock regardless of merit, is recorded in the herd books. Two of the dairy cattle associations, the Holstein-Fresian and the Guernsey Cattle Club, have advanced registeries which record only such females as have made. extraordinary milk and butter fat records and such males as are closely related to several cows eligible to the Advanced Registry and which possess high individual merit. The qualifications of animals necessary for registry in the different herd books are as follows: American Short Horn Cattle Breeders Association, Pedigrees must give the name, color, sex, date of birth of animal, name and address of breeder and owner, name and herd book number of sire or his pedigree, name and pedigree of dam with volume of her record in one of the herd books of the association or of the English Herd Book.
