It has been cultivated from very early times for its rich seeds. The field pea differs but little from the garden Pea except that it has violet colored flowers, while those of the latter are White. Peas may be separated into two classes on the character of the seed,--those having smooth seeds and those having Wrinkled seeds. The second class are richer and are more likely to decay in wet ground, hence they are less adapted for early planting than the first class, Peas are also classed acccrding to thelr manner of growth, as climbing, half-dwarf, and dwarf, and as to season,--early, second early and late, The Pea is one of the most variable of our garden vegetables, and when left to themselves varieties soon lose their characteristics. Soil, climate and other local conditions are prime causes Of variations. Many so called varieties are Only strains Of some leading type and are not distinct enough to be recognized by descriptions, This explains why there is sO much confusion in varieties, especially in the dwarf or extra-early sortse | The soil in the plot used for this experiment was a quick, sand loem. The peas were planted April 26, 1900, in twenty foot sections, each having two rows six inches apart. The double rows were forty-two inches apart from center to center, The seeds were planted in the rows at intervals of about two inches. An abundance of rain caused a larger per cent of the seed to germinate, and the vines to make a rapid, vigorous growth, a Faw wes Rae ‘A-2l, anew early pea from Gregory.
