Faculty of Color Art-Based Testimonios in Computer Science Culture
This art-based testimonio research study uses artistic elicitations to understand the experiences of faculty of color in computer science (CS). The study explores the disciplinary culture of CS at both the profession and department level. Although some frame CS and other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines as race- and gender-neutral spaces, I and others argue these spaces are rooted in whiteness and dominated by men, which makes it important to understand how faculty of color experience and navigate these spaces. Fifteen faculty of color participated in art-based testimonios study. The art-based testimonio entailed engaging with an artistic elicitation prompt and participating in two testimonio interviews where they shared their testimonio by using their artistic elicitation response (e.g., drawing, photo, and/or song). The findings highlight how the CS culture is rootedness in whiteness and exclusion at both the profession and department context and that both areas shape how faculty of color experience and navigate the discipline. Ultimately, this study has the potential to shift the computer science discipline.
