The purpose of this thesis is to show what may be done to modernize an obsolete water power plant in respect to the replacement of the turbines and generator with new vertical units. Because of the limited time, and complete lack of accurate data regarding weights of generator and turbines, this discussion must of necessity be confined to the selection and placing of the units rather than to the details of their actual installations / The plant choosen for this thesis is a Hydro Electric Plant, designed by William.G. Fargo of the Fargo Engineering Company. Jackson, Michigan and built by the Commonwealth Power Company in the spring and summer of 1906. The plant is known as'tebber Dam, and is located on Grand River. Lyons Township. Ionia County, Michigan. The plant consists of four pair of 50' horizontal turbine on one shaft rated at 5000 Hpt, at 164 ReP;M.'with a head of 26', one AC Generator rated at 3300 Kr., 7200 V'EL.. and all necessary electrical accessories for connection to a large power system. There are three factors. outside of cost, to be considered in the modernization of this plant: (a) The stream flow, or hydrology of the region. (b) The number and kind of units to be installed. (c) The method of installation. 103961 2. Each of these steps depends wholly upon the one proceeding it. The rainfall data for this region is suite complete, extending over a period of sixty seven years (1864-1932). Figure 1. shows the yearly precigation in inches with a mean of 31.45”. Figure 2. shows the monthly precipation in inches, with a mean of 2.52“ for the years from 1916 to 1925 inclusive. This period corresponds with that for which stream.floi records are available. Figure 3. shows the frequency of the annual precipitation, with the mean precipitation prevailing about 43.5 percent of the time. Figure 4. shows the average monthly runoff in C.F.3. for the years 1916 to 1325 inclusive, with a mean of 972 C.F.3. fhis occurs 29 percent of the time, as shown on the freouency curve of runoff. Figure 5. The area drained by the Grand River and its tributaries (Red Cedar and Looking Glass Rivers) is approximately 1530 square miles, and is camposed of many kinds of soils, with varying topograghy. Because of this, the runoff curve shows a very poor dependable flow below normal. so prediction of future flow can be made by some paring the monthly precipitation curve, Figure 2. to the Average monthly runoff curve because of irregularities occasioned by special soil conditions, previous weather, and general topography. Figure 6. shows that a few billion cubic.feet of storage is possible, but because only a small pond exists, only about 700 acres on day to day storage is possible. About 45 million cubic feet of water with a 1.51 drawdown, is used at present. The next step is the selection of size and number of units to be installed. The size of the units depends upon the capacity of the old installation; the purpose for which the power generated is to be used, and the water available. The power is supplied to a large 'super-power system, therefore making it necessary to Operate the plantat mamimum capacity only when sufficient water is available. The capacity of the turbines of the present plant is 5000 Hp., and with an overall efficiency assumed at 85%. The water required is 2000 C.F.S. allowing plant operation 14.+% of the time, Figure 5. Because of the small percentage of time of.maxmmwm Operation, it is best not to increase the plant capacity. By using two units, with one unit having automatic adJustable blades on the turbine, a large range of operation at high efficiency is obtainable. One unit wo41d require a 158" wheel, and this would require a coleete rebuilding of the penetocke and auger structure over the generator. A 103" wheel is ideal, as it exactly fits the old draft tubes. and the penstocks are large enough to easily accomodate the wheels in an open flame setting. The installations recommended by the writer is of Smith-Kaylan make, one unit having automatically adjustable blades, and the other hand adJuetable blades. One penstock would be left between the units, no that extra bearing in ' the form of columns, may be provided for by beams to be placed under the generators (not shown on drawing) to carry the extra weight on the generator room floor. The cost items of the modernization would be: 1. Removing old turbine and generator. 2. Sealing each bulkhead between penstocke. 5. Filling draft tubes with concrete, sealing head gates. and removing racks in penstocks #2 and #4. 4. New turbines, generators. and governing equipment. 5. Reinforcing the floor with I-beans over penstocks #1 and #5. 6. Building supports for floor reinforcing beams in penetocks #2 and #4. 7. ?1acing columns along superstructure walls to support crane track. 22. 8. New crane capable of handling new units. 9. Installing the new units and equipment in penstocks $1 and £5. ‘ 10. Making necessary electrical connections. The present structure as a whole, earth embankments, spillways, and power house are in good condition. Although great steps have been made in hydro power development and dams, this dam contains all modern features except the power generation, as has already been discussed. The earth enbanlments contain a core wall'set upstream from the center of the can. thus reducing the hydraulic grade line. The upstream slope sometimes is decreased to 4:1 on present day developments, as compared with the formerly common ratio 5:1. The spillway section is of 10 - 20 x 15 tainter gates and l - 60 x 5 beer trap capable of spilling more When 50,000 0.3.8. at full pond. The use of the bear trap has been discontinued,'and it is the writer's opinion it at the tainter gate capacity is one third greater than necessary. In conclusion it may be said that. with the increasing demand for electric power. this plant might be modernized at a very low cost as compared with the proportional increase in Ki .. hours delivered to the switchboard.
