'x‘ Al D—q 0. 1 17""! “V ‘- lNTBODUCTION The purpose of this thesis is to submit an estimate for the cost of construction of the afore stated project as prepared by the author, and to compare this estimate with that of the successful bidder, and also a comparison with the actual cost. In this thesis it is desired to show the fundamentals of estimating and to prepare an estimate by the carrying out of the fUndamentals. There are two general methods used in preparing an estimate; one is to summarize all of the costs involved in a unit quantity, and to multiply the number of units by this cost. The other method is to calculate the cost by total quantities, the quantity of each class of work is computed as before, but the cost amounts for materials, for labor, and for equipment are kept Separatethroughout the estimate. The first or unit quantity method was used by the author, as the same was used by the successful bidder. It should be noted that the original estimate, as pre- pared by the successful bidder was prepared at a time two years previous to the author's estimate. During this two year period, cost of labor andmaterials have advanced considerably. Therefore, in the preparation of this esti- mate, cost were computed on the same basis as of the origi- nal estimate and not of the costs at the present time. Labor costs were then computed by adding a percentage to the cost of materials, arriving at unit cost for labor and materials. An example of this would be in the case of stonework; the cost of the stone per cubic foot was obtained from the successful bidder-~The Detroit Cut Stone Co., to this was added a percentage of the cost of the stone——estimated as the cost required to lay the stone. On the following pages can be found an estimate pre- pared by the author. Also included is an estimate prepared by the successful bidder, along with some of the actual costs involved in the construction of the project. There- fore, in the forthcoming pages, a general comparison can be made between the author's estimate--the successful bidder's estimate-~and the actual cost. Any differences in the successful bidder's estimate and the author's estimate may be considered to be almost entirely due to a variation in the quantities of material computed, as the same unit prices were used in both esti- mates.
