In nature, it certainly is not exact but leans toward the rough side. Two assua tions were aade to Justify the need for this proposed road network. The first was that there is enough through traffic on U.8. 16 free Grand Rapids to Detroit, and vice versa, to justify a two lane bypass, but not enough voluae to be able to disregard cost of location. For this reason. a aore direct route north of East Lansing, which would have elia- inated.nany of the curves, was not deeaed advisable because of poor soil conditions. . The second assunption was that the need for the south by-pass was aagnified by the existence of a county park located between'lhverly Road and 0.8. 28 near the Grand River. This route also serves traffic on U.S. 27- M 78 which is headed for U.8. 16 eastand further serves as a bypass for the n.s. 27 through traffic and the l-78 through traffic. The foraer is aade poss- ible by the utilisation and iaproveaent of Whverly Road as a connection road between the north and south by-passes. The large scale aap represents the entire route laid out. This was realised after a thorough reconnaissance of all the " outlying areas. The scale on this sap is one inch equal to fifteen hundred foot. Starting at the junction of this pro- posed route and 0.8. 16 in the east. successive ailes were plotted on the sap. Then, the horizontal scale was enlarged three tnaes and shall sketch naps were aade taking one aile at a tine. In order to show all existing features on the one hundred and twenty foot right away clearly, a vertical scale of one inch equal to one hundred feet was used. It was planned to roughly design the intersection develope- nents at 0.8. 16 east and west and also at M-78 north. but tine did not allow'ae to do so. A rough estimate of the cut and fill along the route also was not accolplished.
