From The Great Western Cook Book by Angelina Maria Collins (1857) & Mrs. Lincoln's Boston Cook Book by Mary Johnson Bailey Lincoln (1884): Many recipes call for a pickle pot or a firkin (a water-tight barrel) for making pickles. This example is a ceramic crock, which is still used for pickle making today.
