This tinned wire framework acted as a stand to hold freshly baked pies. Once placed inside the rack, air could circulate around the entire pie more easily and the pie would cool more quickly than if it had been left on a flat surface. Cooling racks were made in many different styles and were often advertised in turn-of-the-century catalogs. Today reproductions of these racks are readily available.
