From Directions for Cookery by Eliza Leslie (1840): Today this item is often called a gravyboat. Miss Leslie however, indicates that this sauceboat might also be sent to the table containing stewed onions or chitterlings instead of gravy or a sauce. This sauceboat dates from the mid-late 1800s.
