Perhaps John Campbell’s visit in March kindled some latent thoughts on this idea. Anyway, Dave Gourlay has initiated some inquiries and it already looks quite appealing. Firstly, the cost can be contained within $500. for a 17 -20 day visit. The number in the tour would be limited to 40-50 Association members and wives. The best time in the off season would be in March, right after the National Turf Conference in Montreal in 1973. . While the tour would be highlighted by golf at many of the renown courses, much time mould be allotted to sight-seeing, from Southern England to the Scottish Highlands. An educational meeting mould be arranged with the British Superintendents at one of the Research Stations and this would entitle you to consider this as an Educational tour. Further facts and information will be forthcoming. Anyone with ideas and interest in this event, please contact Dave Gourlay. . . NOTE: CHERRY HILLS CLUB WILL HONOUR O.G.S.A., WESTERN ONTARIO GREENSKEEPERS, AND C.G.S.A. ASSOCIATIONS DURING THE "OPEN". PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The late spring has been particularly galling this year. On the 17th of April, the temperature was 68 degrees, the greens were mowed, and we were on the move following six weeks of below normal weather -- but it was not to be. It looks like the ski resorts are having the last laugh after a disastrous start to their winter season. I attended the formation of the Ottawa Valley Turfgrass Association on March 27th. Elected were Superintendents - George Payne - President H. Mongeon - Vice-President Les Kelly - Secretary-Treasurer Harold Hannaford - Director. 46 people were in attendance including Dr. George Smith, G. Witteveen, W. Cordukes, Ottawa - re Turf research, R. Moote, D. Gourlay, who were included on a lively panel discussion regarding winter problems. We of the O.G.S.A. wish the Ottawa Valley Turfgrass Association every success. We have a common goal, may we always work to help each other! Congratulations to Messrs. Wyllie, Arends, Dermott, Haines and Heron for the uniting efforts in preparing an O.G.S.A. booth at the recent "Golf '72" Show. This was an admirable display which indicates the versatility and artistry of the group. Lakeshore Landscaping very kindly donated the plants on display, an dour thanks also to them. Wm. Hynd. UNLESS THE HOST SUPERINTENDENT SO WISHES AT HIS CLUB. PLEASE RESPECT THIS RULE!!! r « REPORT FROM ROSS HAINES On April 11, 1972 a combined meeting with the Ontario Golf Superin tendents Association and the Wester Greenskeepers Association was held at Cherry Hills Golf and Country Club. The day was cloudy but warm. The course was too wet for golf and was not open for play yet. A large turnout of members enjoyed lunch of monstrous-sized hamburgers and french fries and a dinner of roast beef. As you know, Cherry Hills is host this year for the Canadian Open which will be held from July 6th to 9th inclusive. Most of us were very anxious to see the course; and so; following lunch, our host for the day, Charlie Behm, showed us slides of the work which for the most part was com pleted last year in order to accommodate the Open this year. We then proceeded out onto the course for a rather sloshy inspection of the new ponds, new traps, new tees and new sod which comprised only part of the work he must accomplish for the "Open". The greens were looking forgeous that day. They had come through the winter free of disease and were just freshly cut; Our thanks to Charlie Behm and Cherry Hills for showing us a great time and our best wishes for the coming golf season. DON 'T D.ON'T. FORGET!!! FORGET! ! I -- If you want to attend the Canadian Open this year at Cherry Hills, you must pay the admittance fee wh en entering when the gate. But you are entitled to a full refund if you take your ticket to the tournament office, which will be located upstairs in the clubhouse, and present your membership card.
