PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE An era is drawing to a close with the passing of Bill Forrester on July 21st and his old friend Jack Abbott who preceded Bill by a few months when he passed on to greener pastures in March, 1972. Bill Forrester was the respected Golf Superintendent at Weston, for close to 30 years. He was an active member of the O.G.S.A. and was secretary for many years. I personally remember Bill Forrester as a helpful neighbour in my early years at St. George’s. His spontaneous response to my problems somehow made the job easier. Jack Abbott, former Superintendent at Islington and Rosedale, I had the pleasure of meeting only on one occasion in 1963 during the O’Keefe tour nament at St. George’s when he strongly urged me to join the O.G.S.A. - Louis Cole completes 50 years service at Burlington Golf Club. - Norm MacDonald retires from York Downs át the age of 76. - Bill Bluett recently retired from Mississauga Golf Club. As I am comparatively new to the O.G.S.A., I am not qualified to deal at length with the above impressive group of men -- there is no question that they helped considerably in the forming and growth of the O.G.S.A. and there were others whom I have never met, deserving of mention. The point of this message is: — The Ontario Golf Association celebrates their 50th Anniversary next May 4th, 1973 when they propose to especially honour Canadians and former Canadians because of their genuine and outstanding contribution to the game of golf in Ontario. This is the opportunity for us to make our recommendations. May we have your suggestions and ideas at the next meeting? : Wm. Hynd. HIGHLIGHTS OF ....... Greens Chairman/Superintendent and Pro/Superintendent Golf Tournaments This year the Greens Chairman/Superintendent Golf Tournament was held at Brantford Golf & Country Club, July 21, 1972. It turned out to be a great success and many thanks to our host Vince Piccolo and Brantford Golf & Country Club. The weather cooperated beautifully., as it was a sizzling day in the upper 80's. The golf course was in fine shape as the scores indicated. The winners of this year’s tournament, from Georgetown Golf and Country Club were Superintendent Bob Hall and his Greens Chairman John Armour. For winning, they received a beautiful golf bag for Bob and a great Toro rotary mower for John Armour, his Greens Chairman. The entry from Summit Golf and Country Club was second. Superintendent Bob Lamb and his Greens Chairman H. Davie. To the Associate members who cooperated with us in donating prizes and monetary donations, go many, many thanks for their support of this fine tournament. Without their support, it would be quite a financial strain. On August 25th at Islington Golf and Country Club, the Pro/Superin- tendent Golf Tournament was held with Paul Dermott as host Superintendent and Jim McKitterick as host professional. Even though we had a torrent of a rain the night before, the course proved to be a great compliment for Paul as it was in fine shape. We had a terrific dinner of barbecued steak and all the trimmings. A field of 39 teams from across Ontario enjoyed a day of fine fellowship and fun, and to top it all off at the end of the tournament, a tie for the lead had to be broken by a playoff. Whitey Jones and Bruce Butterworth from Aurora Highlands beat Bobby Breen and Tony Wozniak, from Malton, when "’good ole’ Whitey" birdied the second hole. Many thanks to the professionals and their organization for the effort and cooperation they gave in helping to organize this event and of course to our hosts, Paul and Jim and Islington Golf and Country Club. "Symposium '73" On January 4th, 1973 our Annual Symposium will again be held at Northwood Golf and Country Club with Gord Witteveen as our host. In the past, this Symposium has proven to be most interesting, enlightening and informative mostly because of the frankness of the various papers and materials, which are presented. I am sure we can count on Dr. Jack Eggens to be our very capable and congenial master of ceremonies again this year. Final details for this event will be worked out very shortly and just as soon as the programme is finalized, we will let you know. Just a word here to those people who might be receiving an invita tion in the near future to be speakers on the programme. Don’t hesitate! Accept it! Meet the challenge head on. I think you will be pleasantly surprised in yourself.....
