It has been quite an eventful year, both as individual Superin tendents and/or as an Association. The most unique characteristic of this year's growing season was again unusual climatolo gical conditions. The first three months were above average in rainfall totals. In the month of June, a large portion of our membership received rain on 20 days in succession. This was contradicted by a stretch during July and August when the majority of the Province received less than one half inch of rain over a six week period. The weather is all part of the game, but an important aspect is "to manage" when the controls are somewhat out of our hands. Other observations in 1974 we: the ever increasing costs for supplies and materials, this fact, together with labour increases will assist in keeping the future ever so challenging. In 1974, we celebrated our 50th year as an Association, certainly there are still general problems we as a group must overcome, regarding remuneration, image, sincerity, etc., but I feel strongly that the original eleven members of the O.G.S.A., back in 1924, would be quite envious of most Supers' positions in to-days recreation conscious Society. The next 50 years can only realize tremendous financial and satisfactory im provements in the Golf Course business. Technological advancements will continue as in all other businesses. This is the time of year when new positions are opening. All members should be aware of the salaries in the area, and be sure to maintain the standards. Also, be extremely cautious of job descriptions and make sure all phases of the job responsibilities are very clear. The winter educational Seminars, Symposiums and Con ferences are quickly approaching and there is always something to be gained from each and everyone, so do your best to attend these functions. R. You MUST make reservations with Bob Hall, call him at 889 - 8105 GUESTS WELCOME NEWS NEWS NEWS Norm MacDonald one of our oldest and most beloved members passed away recently. Norm was superintendent for many years at the old York Downs G.C. until they relocated and rebuilt the present course where he was until his retirement a few years ago. Norm is best remembered by myself for his story telling of the old days, which I could listen to for hours on end. He was revered by his fellow members and will be missed greatly, witnessed by the fact that 6 of his fellow superintendents acte d as his pallbearers. Jack Harris another member of long standing will be retiring from his position os Superintendent of Hamilton Golf and Country Club as of January 31 st next year. Jack has made many friends across Canada and the United States and has been attending conferences regularly for many years. He also is a great golfer and is more often than not, on the winners list. Jack will be devoting more time to his own course which he has built during the past few years. We all wish him well! Stu Mills of London Highlands was the successful candidate that will be following Jack Harris at Hamilton G.C. Congratulations to Stu!
