GRIGHTMIRE 485 - 9742 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Together with our second Newsletter, I hope that Spring has arrived at our golf course, and instead of the white snow we see some green, and hope fully snowmold free grass. I take this opportunity to wish all of you a very successful and trouble free season. At our last Annual Meeting, the membership had set aside funds to support turf research in Canada. All of us know the importance of research. Without it, it would be impossible to maintain our golf courses in the condition the golfer demands and expects. Up until now, we have been doing quite nicely with the results of research done in the U.S., but now we have the brains and facilities right here in Canada. What we have to do as an Association is to show that we are interes ted and our Universities will come up with results! The University of Guelph has now sent out a request for support of a Research project, involving the evaluation of slow release nitrogen material for turfgrass production, and to assess the measurement of nitrate nitrogen in the tissue as an indicator of the level of nitrogen sufficiency for good colour, density and disease resistance of a turf mixture. The following Associations have been approached for support: R.C.G.A., Greens Section. Canadian Golf Superintendents Association Nursery Sod Growers Association Ontario Golf Superintendents Association Ontario Landscape Association Ontario Garden Maintenance and Landscaping Association. This project will be conducted at the Preston and Elora research station over the next two years under the direction of Dr. R. W. Sheard, Associate Professor of Soil Science, and Dr. J, Eggens, Assistant Professor, Horticultural Science Department. Funds amounting to approximately $10,000. over a two year period would be required to carry out this project. The money set aside for research at our Annual Meeting for the University of Guelph will go to this project. The financial situation of our Association will not allow any more support for this year, but this will come up for review at our next Annual Meeting. One way to increase our finances is to get new members. Most of us know someone who is qualified to join our Association. So let's make an effort to get them to join us. Membership forms are available at all monthly meetings, or through our office at 31 Diana Drive, Downsview, Ontario. John Arends, President. THORNHILL COUNTRY CLUB Monday, February 22nd saw a most successful meeting held at Thornhill Golf & Country Club with Dave Gourlay as ourhost. The Curling session in the morning saw a team skipped by Al Beeney from North Halton Golf Club, and consisting of Roy French, Bob Hall and Jack Kostegin defeat John Stoughton, Paul Dermott, Bob Heron and Doug Heron in a closely played game that saw some well played shots. After lunch we gathered to see some interesting film shot by Dave Gourlay on his trip to Phoenix, with Gord Witteveen, and myself. Keith Nisbet then presented a lot of slides taken by Bob Moote on a recent trip with brother Dave and Keith Nisbet, along with other American Superintendents. The trip took them through England, Scotland and Ireland for two weeks inspec- ting golf courses and enabled them to get in a little golf as well. Everyone enjoyed the films and slides and the informal chatter and discussions. We proceeded upstairs to a regular business meeting followed by a very nice spread of chicken, meatballs, sandwiches and coffee. I am sure everyone enjoyed themselves and our thanks to Dave and Thornhill for such a gracious time. By Ross Haines NEXT MEETING PORT COLBORNE COUNTRY CLUB APRIL 20th 1971 HOST: BILL ROBERTSON PORT COLBORNE COUNTRY CLUB HOST: BILL ROBERTSON The Port Colborne Country Club wasfounded in 1929 on 100 acres of Wainfleet Township. Initially, it was a nine hole layout until construction was completed on an additional nine holes in 1956, on 50 acres of land purch- ased 10 years previously. Eventually, with the increased play on this popular golf course, it was found the greens and tees were too small and the decision was made to rebuild. Bob Moote was called in to design a new layout and during the period 1961-69, nine new greens were completed under Bill's supervision, the rough fill obtained by digging lakes on the course. New greens are sodded or stolonized to C 15 which was propagated on the course. Tees are merion and recently the new W'9 tee sodded to Fykling with pleasing results. Fairway mixture on new areas is Kentucky and Creeping Red Fescue. Cutting height of greens is 5/32, tees 1/2, and fairways 3/4. Bill Robertson came to Port Colborne Golf Club in 1949, after two years working at Lookout Point. He maintained the golf course at the beginning with 2 men and himself. He now has 5 permanent men and 4 students. Membership has increased from 300 to 850 which indicates a progressive club. R. C. G. A. All in all, it proved to be quite a successful conference indeed and the people who were responsible for organizing it should be well pleased with the results of their efforts. The registration this year was just over the 400 mark, a little down from the last time we were in Montreal, but I'm sure all the snow they got just prior to the Conference had something to do with it. Barry Tomlinson arrived from England five years ago with an agricultural degree and worked on a Dude Ranch outside Hamilton for four years as Farm Manager. He decided he would like to try his luck in the golf course maintenance business in 1970, and was offered jobs at St. George’s and Board of Trade in the Spring of 1970. He attended the R.C.G.A. Conference at Seaway Hotel March 1970, met Casper McCulloch who offered him the post of Assistant at Banff Springs, which he gratefully accepted. As of March 1st, 1971, he is now Superintendent at Banff Springs, upon the retirement of Casper McCulloch. Best of Luck, Barry! COMPETITION - SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR A number of years ago, Gord Witteveen brought up the idea of some form of competition to stimulate interest in the profession of golf course maintenance, the idea never got off the floor.... The Scottish Greenskeepers' Association are showing the way by initiating SCOTLAND’S GREENSKEEPER OF THE YEAR COMPETITION in 1969. It appeared to be a tremendous success! There were 6 runner up prizes. The following are points of interest from the winner, McKelvie's Course: 1. Exceptionally good condition. 2. Weed free throughout. 3. Drainage excellent. 4.
