ELLIOT NEWLY CERTIFIED Congratulations to CECIL JOHNSTON AND USDA-Supported Research at Fort Lauderdale TOM BENEFIELD Dr. Monica L. Elliot has recently been awarded a $46,000 research grant for a one year period by the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Competitive Research Grants Program. The title of the grant is " A n t i b i o t i c P r o d u c t i o n by Rhizosphere-Competent Streptomycetes". Monica is located at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, University of Florida - IFAS. Streptomycetes are bacteria that naturally live in all soils. They produce a volatile compound that provides soil with its characteristic odor. Some bacteria, including the streptomycetes, live on (colonize) the roots of plants (rhizosphere), and as is the case with mostthings in nature, some bacteria are better at colonizing roots than others. Monica's research program at FLREC focuses on these rootcolonizing bacteria and their potential use as biological control agents of soilborne pests. • SUPERINTENDENTS NEEDED Pine Meadows G&CC. He is currently extremely active as Government Relations Committee Chairman for the FGCSA and was instrumental in getting Hoelon registered for turf use in Florida. He has been a member of the GCSAA since 1984 and currently is a Nominee for a Directorship of the GCSAA (see related article elsewhere in this Green Sheet issue). Cecil is married and is an avid sailor. m EXCERPTS: from 1989 FGCSA The 1989 meeting of the FGSCA Board of D i r e c t o r s held in c o n j u n c t i o n w i t h t h e FTGA Conference was called to order by Vice President Ray Hansen at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October7,1989. Ray announced that he was chairing the meeting because President Joel Jackson was undergoing heart surgery in Orlando this weekend. The minutes of the Crowfoot Board Meeting were approved. The T r e a s u r e r s r e p o r t was also approved. Secretary/Treasurer Tom Benefield reported that all chapters had paid their state dues. There are no 1989 members from the Gulf Coast chapter. He reminded all chapters that they must send in additional dues to the state monthly as new members join their local chapter. The FGSCA prorates dues to 1/2 after January of each year and most local chapters offer the same schedule. However, each local chapter is free to set their own policies regarding prorating. Tom discussed the possibility of another chapter forming in the Tallahassee area and is also pursuing a small chapter in the Pensacola area. FLORIDA GREEN: Dan is working with Larry Kieffer on the Winter issue to be sure that it does not duplicate Golf Course Management. Larry announced that he would be printing an additional 5,000 copies of the Florida Green Winter issue to be distributed at the GCSAA Conference. JanLark Communications will be taking over the publishing of the magazine with the Spring issue. At that time, the Florida Green's reserve will be placed in a separate FGSCA interest bearing account. GREEN SHEET: Mike Bailey reported that Estech is continuing to support the newsletter 100%. He urged all External V.P.'s to send in any local news to the office on a monthly basis. MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY: Marie Roberts reported that the Membership Directory has been printed and should be ready for mailing to all members in the next two weeks. FGCSA Membership Cards and window decals will be included in the package. EDUCATION: Chairman Walt McMahon reported on the seminars scheduled for the next fiscal year. The Committee is putting together another seminar on Irrigation to be offered to local chapters in January. Representatives from the local Water Management District will speak at these seminars on the water shortage problems in that area. He also stated that the C o m m i t t e e is s t u d y i n g the possibility of offering a seminar on computer software to be presented by TRIMS. The FGCSA is complying with their wishes by co-sponsoring a Regional Seminar in November 1990. DUES INCREASE: Ray Hansen led a discussion on the local chapter feedback to the intended dues increase for the 1990-91 fiscal year. The Florida Golf Course Superintendents Board of Directors voted to raise the Association's yearly dues to $ 5 0 . 0 0 / y e a r beginning with the 1990-91 fiscal year. Walt also announced that there would be another Mechanics seminar this year. The Education Committee would like to co-sponsor a GCSAA Regional Seminar in November 1990. He suggested thattheseminar be scheduled in Palm Beach because the turnout in that area has been the largest for all seminars in the past three years. A motion was made to allow the Education Committee to co-sponsor a Regional Seminar with the GCSAA for November 1990. The motion was approved. MEMBERSHIP: Cecil Johnston i n t r o d u c e d Robert Giehls, a superintendent from the Tallahasse area. He stated that though their members are small, there is a group of superintendents who believe a separate chapter could work in Tallahassee. Travel time to the Jacksonville area makes it impossible for them to belong to the North Florida chapter. CERTIFICATION: Ray Hansen reported that Cecil Johnston and Tom Benefield are our newest Certified Golf Course Superintendents. The GCSAA has attempted to standardize their accrediation of seminars to reflect .1 CEU for each credit hour. They encourage all superintendents in the Certification process to attend GCSAA seminars. Buddy Carmouche CGCS representing Everglades Chapter was the first to pass motion for a dues increase, realizing state support and benefits of association. the the the our GCSAA: Mike Perham reported on his visit to headquarters for the Publications Committee meeting. He stated that the staff has increased to 42 employees and that the new building is currently being c o n s t r u c t e d to r e l i e v e t h e overcrowding. BOARD MEETING RESEARCH: Kevin Downing gave a slide presentation showing the progress that has been made and also illustrates the other research projects that are going on at the Fort Lauderdale site. He distributed a d r a w i n g of t h e proposed composition of the green and stated that half of the green will be for research and the other half will be devoted to product evaluations, overseeding trials, etc. The green will be called the Otto Schmeisser Memorial Research Green. Local Golf Course Maintenance crews diligently work on construction of the IFAS Research Green at Fort Lauderdale this past month. A turf technician must be hired to maintain the green to golf course playing conditions. The technician w i l l also have o t h e r t u r f maintenance responsibilities as dictated by the Research Committee and the IFAS staff in order to help the staff get facility in better condition to attract more research. Since the cost is expected to be between $12 and $15/hour for a 30 hour week, the FGCSA Research Committee will need at least $22,500 a year for maintenance. The Fort Lauderdale Research Green will be funded by the FGCSA Research Committee as a state project. The South Florida chapter has donated $13,000 to the project already. West Coast chapter reported that they had approved $3,000 for the green, Everglades chapter reported that they would also donate $3,000 to the green. Palm Beach chapter reported that they would donate $8,000 (which includes $5,000 currently being held by the FTGA from last year). South Florida reported that they would be donating another $10,000 to the project as soon as they receive their funds back from the FTGA. This makes a total of $24,000 to be added to the FGCSA Research Fund which will be enough for the next fiscal year. Kevin reminded the Board that this is a state-wide project and hoped more chapters would donate to the project in the future. If the project proves successful, other greens will be built in other parts of the state. Chemical companies and others requesting product evaluations may enable the project to be selfsupporting within 5 years. FTGA: Central Florida expected to donate approximately $2,000. Everglades is donating $4,500; Palm Beach - $3,000; South Florida expected to donate approximately $3,000; Treasure Coast $1,000; and the West Coast chapter $5,000 to the G. C. Horn Endowment Fund. The FGCSA will bedonating $2,300from Florida Golf Week. Ray hopes that the FTGA will realize that we will continue to support their projects but that we are committed to the research green as a state-wide research project which we expect to be extremely beneficial to all Florida superintendents. POA: Buddy Carmouche reported that due to scheduling problems, the G.C. Horn Tournament will be moved to another club in the Naples area but that the Poa Classic will continue to be played at the Naples Beach Hotel. CROWFOOT: Joe Ondo reported that the Crowfoot Open nriay be played at Bay Hill Club next year. The facilities at Grand Cypress have g o t t e n very high and the Tournament Committee is definitely considering other sites. GOLF: Since Hal Hicks will be unable to play in the GCSAA Tournament, Joe Ondo will replace him on the state team. BY LAWS: The Board voted on the change to Article II, Section 1. A motion was made to change the w o r d i n g to t h e f o l l o w i n g : Application for membership in This Association shall be in conjunction with application for membership in the applicant's local Superintendents Association. Any superintendent or assistant superintendent who becomes a member of a local Superintendents Association must become a member of This Association at the same time.'' The motion was approved. GCSAA C O N V E N T I O N : Cecil J o h n s t o n suggested that all chapters might consider electing the State Voting Delegate (Tom Benefield) as their local chapter Voting Delegate. This would insure that all FGCSA members would be voting with the state without having to sign a Voting Affidavit. Cecil announced that there would be a C o n f e r e n c e and Show Committee Meeting in Orlando on October 26 and that the GCSAA would be inviting all interested Board Members to a dinner on October 27 to discuss plans for the Conference. Rick Walker announced that he has sent letters to all superintendents in the Central Florida, North Florida, Ridge and Treasure Coast chapters r e g a r d i n g p r o v i d i n g playing privileges to GCSAA members during Conference week. He also reported that his committee would like to distribute tee gifts with the FGCSA logo to those playing in the GCSAA Golf Tournament (approximately 600 golfers). A motion was made for the FGSCA to donate $3,000 toward a tee gift for the GCSAA Tournament, The motion was approved. Mike Bailey suggested that we contact the GCSAA regarding a d i s c o u n t rate f o r one day admittance to the GCSAA Show for Continued on next page m e c h a n i c s and o t h e r crew members. If there is enough interest, he would like to see the FGCSA provide bus service to Orlando for crew members who wish to take advantage of the discount day. GOVERNMENT RELATIONS: Cecil Johnston quickly reviewed his current material on the Endangered S p e c i e s , Water M a n a g e m e n t Districts, equipment wash area, and the use of Hoelon. This is a very important area and Cecil requested additional members to serve on this committee. NEW BUSINESS: Mike Bailey reported that the Palm Beach chapter is t r y i n g to c o l l e c t donations for victims of Hurricane Hugo in the Carolina area. The Board suggested that the chapter contact a superintendent in the Carolinas GCSA to coordinate their efforts. HURRICANE HUGO Disaster in Charleston, S.C. and neighboring towns. The Florida Golf Course Superintendent Association is asking for your donations to help fellow S u p e r i n t e n d e n t s , and employees in the Carolinas. MEMBERSHIP SERVICES The 1990 FGCSA Membership Directory has been mailed to all Class A and Class B members of the FGCSA. A current FGCSA membership card and the new window decals are included in the package. Please call the FGCSA office if you have not received your Directory. • FROM THE DESK OF RUSS MITCHELL "Everybody Gets Wet" As we enter the traditionally dry season we must consider making the most of our limited water supply. South Florida has been dry all fall which increases their problems. Regardless of location, the basic problem is the same. We must make our water as efficient as possible. To do this, I believe wetting agents are the answer. More and more supt. are installing direct injection systems for their irrigation. In this manner, the entire course is receiving water plus a wetting agent to help penetrate hydrophobic soils and once through the surface to help retain that moisture. There are several quality products for this purpose. Even with these systems, you probably need to supplement on greens and tees. LDS. It sounds like a drug, but what it is, is a pain in the superintendents backside. Localized Dry Spots are a common and a hard to control problem. On golf course greens this can occur regardless of the amount of water the green receives. The symptoms are more pronounced when the temperatures are high. The cause of LDS is a formation of an organic acid around the soil particles. This mainly occurs in sands just like in a Florida green or a USGA spec, green. I personally believe this helps to trigger the Bermuda Decline which is prevalent in late summer and fall. This disease as you recall is of the Fusairum family and likes high heat, high humidity and high nitrogen fertilization. Also very important to this disease is dry soil!. SOUND FAMILIAR? Has anyone ever pulled a core sample from a LDS on a green one hour after a one inch rain and found the soil underneath dry as dust? I have and it wasn't thatch either, because some times there was none! Dr. Karnok at the University of Georgia found out in tests that it requires 64ozs of aqua-gro L per 1000 sq. ft. to wash off the coating from the sand particles. Not only would this be expensive to do, but he found he got quite a burn on his bentgrass green. Luckily his tests proved that at rates without burn, he greatly reduced the symptoms of LDS. He also got similar results with several other wetting agents. One of these products which tested was unusual in the fact, it is totally organic, made from cactus. The material worked as well as any other product at a 16oz rate and was the only product that would not burn at any tested rate! No matter what you use, get on a program and stick to it year round and I think that you will more than offset your material costs by the lack of other problems related to LDS... As the FTGA Golf Tournament prepares to move to another location, Sun City Center Golf Club hosted the 1989 Event. Dave Oliver avenged his one stroke loss last year with an outstanding 68 on the Palms Course to win the President's Cup. Dave, from the Treasure Coast chapter, is on a winning streak after also taking the Crowfoot Open Championship. We wish him luck in the next Tournament — the prestigious GCSAA's 1990 Golf Championship in Orlando. The West Coast chapter team consisting of Lynn Sloper, Frank Cook, Tom Benefield, and Bert McCrimnon won the team event this year. Low net at the Palms was won by Gerald Marquardt with a 62; at the Lakes by Dick Leminister with a 75; and at the Oaks by Q. P. Hudson with a 64. Other low gross winners were Scott Zakany at the Lakes GC with a 73 and Dave Frye at the Oaks GC with a 78. CONFERENCE & SHOW The 1989 FGCSA Distinguished Service Award was presented to TOM BURROWS at the FTGA Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, October 10th. Tom was recognized by his peers for his outstanding achievements as a golf course superintendent. Suppliers revealed some new equipment that's not even out yet. Tom graduated from Penn State University with an A.S. degree in Turf Management. Aftergraduation, he served as superintendent at Glencoe GC for 6 years and then, in 1967, moved to the Playboy Club in Wisconsin and New Jersey where he built four golf courses. Tom has been a member of the Treasure Coast GCSA since he first moved to Florida in 1972 as superintendent at Mariner Sands CC, Stuart. He moved to Turtle Creek Club, Tequesta, in 1974. He is now serving the turf grass industry as a golf course consultant. Mark Black sits atop a new mower he tried to drive home, the only problem: "they pulled the keys" JmjDO Tom has been extremely active in the FGCSA, serving as President of the Association from 1984 to 1986. He breathed new life into a struggling association that now is one of the top chapters of GCSAA both in voting strength and in research d o l l a r s d o n a t e d to turfgrass research. He established the Membership Directory, hired a permanent secretary for the association, and was instrumental in the growth of the Education Committee. Tom has been a member of the GCSAA for 30 years, and has served as a committee member for the FTGA and the Musser International Foundation. • Pat Kearney, left examines a new green encroachment device that seems interesting for contaminations.
