Knock on wood, here's hoping that none of you have to go through disaster recovery this year at all. With the clubhouse expansion and repairs comes changes to the course, especially holes near the club that now has a new footprint. Relocating irrigation and drainage lines and other infrastructure is just part of the planning and adapting that goes on with major projects, and I guess the same can be true for our associations. As we undertake to dig deeper into our Strategic Planning in order to strengthen the FGCS A for future growth and development, we must seriously plan and adapt and look beyond the ways we have always done things. As the world changes and the demands on our time increase we need to find new ways to attract young members, keep older one energized and appeal to wide variety of generational differences from Baby Boomers, Generation X and the Millennial or Gen Y as some call them. Each group has a different frame of reference for their thinking about work, play and associations. Not one is right or wrong, better or worse, just different. Discovering how we can keep our association growing and relevant as these generations overlap will be a challenge not only for the FGCS A but all trade and professional associations. We just completed our annual meeting in Orlando, and I'd like to welcome new board members Nancy Miller from the Calusa Chapter, Wayne Kappauf from the Everglades, Rip Phillips from North Florida, Tom Barnett from the Ridge and welcome back for an encore Kevin Downing, who is serving out Pete Powell's remaining term. We were disappointed that Greg Kriesch decided to resign as incoming Vice President, but we all know and understand that work and family comes first. We wish Greg well and thank him for his service on the board. Since we just kicked off the Strategic Planning initiative a year ago and the hurricanes did back us all up a bit, the current officers have been approved by the board to continue in our same roles on the Executive Council with Joe Pantaleo as Immediate Past (jREEN SHEE Editor: Joel Jackson, CGCS (407) 248-1971 (fax/phone) e-mail: FLGrn@aol.com News Coordinator: Mrs. Marie Roberts 1760 NW Pine Lake Drive Stuart, FL 34994 (772) 692-9349 (772) 692-9654 (fax) (800) 732-6053 (Florida Wats) e-mail: fgcsal23@bellsouth.net The Green Sheet is a bimonthly FGCS A newsletter printed as follows: Jan/Feb, March/April, May/June, July/August, Sept/October, November/December. LCraig Weyandt President, Matt Taylor as Vice President, myself as President and we welcome Shane Bass, CGCS from the Coastal Plains chapter as our new Secretary/Treasurer. When I stop and think of how far we have come over the years and how many working relationships have been forged between the FGCS A and the FTGA, UF/IFAS, the Florida Fertilizer & Agrichemical Association, Florida Sod Growers Cooperative, Florida Department of Agriculture and the various Water Management Districts, I know that we are moving forward and we need you to help keep the momentum going. I hope that you will continue to support your local chapters by attending meetings, events and serving on committees or just hosting one of those monthly meetings. Sure work can get tough at times and you have to make sure you have things covered, but participating in associations can help you forget your troubles for a day and be in the company of those who have also walked a mile in your shoes. Who knows, you just might learn a new idea that can help you solve a nagging problem. Last chance to register for the 2006 FTGA Conference & Show on Sept. 12th - 15th at the Hyatt in Bonita Springs. See page 7 for details. Director of Communications Report What's Up D.O.C.? by Joel Jackson 1. Government Relations: Breaking News (Arsenic/MSMA - The Fight is Over) On Wednesday, August 9, 2006 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a reregistration decision that MSMA, DSMA, CAMA, and Cacodylic Acid (organic arsenicals) are ineligible for reregistration. The decision was published in the Federal Register and supporting documents are available online (links below). There are 60 days for public comment and to file objections, ending October 10, 2006. The EPA summary is remarkably brief and unambiguous. In its decision, all uses of MSMA, DSMA, CAMA, and Cacodylic Acid are ineligible for reregistration. EPA intends to take action to revoke tolerances and to cancel the registrations of pesticides containing MSMA, DSMA, CAMA, and Cacodylic Acid, see http://tinyurl.com/ jjjaw or http://www.epa.gov/oppsrrdl/ reregistration/methanearsonic_acid/ MSMA is an herbicide used for grass weed control in bermudagrass and zoysiagrass turf, as well as in some cool season turfgrasses. In bermudagrass turf in Florida (e.g., golf courses and sports fields), MSMA is used for postemergence control of grass weeds, especially goosegrass, crabgrasses, and tropical signalgrass. Most use of MSMA on Florida golf courses is reportedly by spot treatment. Foramsulfuron (trade name Revolver), diclofop-methyl (trade name Illoxan) and metribuzin (trade name Sencor) are possible herbicide alternatives to MSMA for goosegrass control, used individually or mixture, depending on the situation. There are no a l t e r n a t i v e s e l e c t i v e postemergence herbicides available for control of mature crabgrass and tropical signalgrass weeds. Other methods for controlling grass weeds in bermudagrass and zoysiagrass turf include preemergence herbicides and cultural management, the use of mowing, watering, and fertilization practices to reduce goosegrass infestation. Methyl Bromide Update: The Critical Use Exemption for use of Methyl Bromide on golf courses has been filed with the EPA. We are awaiting the results of EPA's review for the inevitable questions that likely will come. Even if accepted and forwarded we do not know if the International Body will approve the application. Because of the lengthy process this exemption is for 2008. Fertilizer Issues: Articles continue to appear in newspapers around the state about the reduced use or bans on fertilizers and reduction of nutrient loading in Florida's waterways. Local governments aren't waiting for Florida's DEP new watershed non-point pollution Clean Water Act. The best way you can keep sanity in the rush to judgment is to promote the Green Industry BMP Manuals available through IFAS and Dr. Trenholm and your local County Extension Office. These manuals provide officials with a logical way to look good environmentally and use science at the same time. What a concept! The Golf BMP manual is not far off, but likely won't get to the printer until the end of the year, and it's an election year so promote BMPs at local commission meetings. It's up to you. Talk to your club officials and influential members. 2. Allied Associations: FTGA - A search committee has gone through 44 resumes and narrowed down a list of possible candidates for Executive Director to four people. Interviews have taken place and final decision and negotiations are underway. This may be a good training session for the FGCSA to look for replacement of our staff in a couple of years. GCSAA - If you have been paying attention to emails and magazines you should know by now that GCSAA is proposing a Dues Pricing Strategy to avoid the huge increases. The gist of the plan is to review the needs and revenues and if warranted annual dues increases will be limited to 2.5 - 3%. A dues increase will not be automatic annually, but will be based on a board discussion with input and based on current needs. Bob Randquist reports that GCSAA's CEO Steve Mona will be the guest speaker at the Annual Palm Beach/Treasure Coast Joint Meeting on October the 11th at the Boca Rio Golf Club. FNGLA - At the 2006 FN ATS Show in Orlando, on September 28th, the Florida Farm Credit and the Ag Institute will host it's 3rd Annual Candidates Forum for gubernatorial and cabinet candidates to present their Ag and Green Industry platforms. I have sent letters to all candidates and sent sample letters to all chapters that invites the candidates to appear and present their views. We are using this opportunity to join forces with the larger Ag commodities on common ground on fertilizer and pesticide use in the face of increased media and local government attention. 3. Education: There is one place you definitely need to be in September (12th to 15th) and that's at the FTGA Conference and Show at the Hyatt Coconut Point in Bonita Springs Registration information is available at www.ftga.org. Click on the Conference and Show button for a registration form. The Summer 2006 meeting of the FGCSA Board of Directors was called to order by President Craig Weyandt at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28th at Grand Cypress Villas. All officers except Greg Kriesch were present. All chapters were represented. Others attending the meeting were Joel Jackson D.O.C./Florida Green editor; Mike Goldie, Lobbyist, Suzanne Moraco, Morgan Stanley, Joe Ondo, FGCSA Past President; Tim Hiers, FGCSA Past President, Chris Neff, North Florida GCSA and Marie Roberts, Association Manager. Craig Weyandt began the meeting with an announcement that Secretary/Treasurer Greg Kriesch has reluctantly resigned his position on the FGCSA Board due to the time constraints and tremendous pressure of his job as his club members take over his club. Joe Pantaleo announced that the Executive Board has decided to extend their term of office for an extra year to assure continuity on the board. Joe will remain as Past President; Craig as President and Matt Taylor as Vice President. The Secretary/ Treasurer position will be filled after the election of officers at the Annual Meeting to follow this board meeting. MORGAN STANLEY REPORT: Our Account Representative, Suzanne Moraco, gave a review of our MS Fund Solution Account. She reported that our funds continue to be allocated between stocks and bonds as allocated by our Policy Statement that was done in 2004. Our funds have grown at a 15.31% net return with the original $150,000 investment now standing at $173,000 as of the end of June. She reviewed several of the components and made a suggestion that we substitute a 4-star Fidelity Diversified Fund for one of the components that was not performing as well. TIM H I E R S ' R E P O R T ON THE FERTILIZER PROJECT: FGCSA Past President Tim Hiers began his discussion by thanking Erica Santella anad Dr. Laurie Trenholm for their work on the landscape BMP's that were used at the meeting held in Fort Myers on July 17th regarding Fertilizer and red tide. Tim then gave the board a progress report on this fund-raising project. He reported that he has met with the CMA for the second time and received their support to provide 15 CMA's to start the program at their clubs, sometime in October. He reminded the board that, at this time, only Harrells and Howards have been asked to participate in the program which was done for the convenience of the program. Long range planning for this project may include chemicals as well. Tim will be the point person for questions. Plans call for an annual DVD to be made to show the actual research projects that are being funded by the dollars raised. LOBBYIST REPORT: Mike Goldie discussed some of the agricultural programs such as the $ per box tax by the Department of Citrus and noted that the funds sent to research will carryover for more than a year. He also discussed the state catastrophic fund and warned that large increases are coming soon. Some of the private insurance companies are staying in the state but raising their rates by a larger percent. A National Catastrophic Fund or last resort insurance will be the driving discussion in the next legislative year. Mike also discussed the upcoming elections. Minutes of the Spring Board Meeting were approved after noting that Craig Weyandt, not Darren Davis, will prepare the letter regarding the 2007 FGCSA dues increase. Craig Weyandt then presented a letter from former GCSAA President, Bruce Williams, requesting support of an Endowment for funding of the GCSAA Chapter Leaders Symposium. After some discussion, there was little support for this request and the item was tabled. FINANCIAL STATEMENTS: Vice President Matt Taylor presented the financial report. Matt discussed the deficit in the balance sheet for the 2005 2006. He noted that the $22,000 deficit in the FGCSA Reception line item was a planned use of the extra funds that the sponsors had donated to the reception during the past ten years. This cleared out the entire amount of extra funds from the sponsor money. Matt presented the proposed budget for the Operating Fund for 2006 2007. He noted that Mike Goldie's fee will be supplemented by the Florida Turfgrass Association this year resulting in a lower line item for us. After a discussion, Shane Bass made a motion to approve the budget and the financial reports. Bill Kistler seconded the motion and the motion was approved. DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS REPORT: Joel discussed the methyl bromide and fertilizer issues that are continuing throughout the state. PUBLICATIONS: Joel reported that the Summer issue of the Florida Green has been printed and is now in distribution. He asked all Externals to work on getting their members to send in an article for the Hands On Topics for the coming year. Marie Roberts reported that advertisements for the 2007 Membership Directory are coming in at a good pace and reminded all Externals that August 10th is the deadline to send in all membership renewals. All renewals reported by the 10th will be assured of their listing in the 2007 FGCSA Directory. Any renewals received after that date may also be included if the final draft of the directory is not complete before receiving these late renewals. AWARDS: Chris Neff reported that Alan Weitzel has been presented with the 2006 Distinguished Service Award and that Dan Hall, Jr. will receive his President's Award for Lifetime Service from the Everglades chapter. The qualifications for the new Marie Roberts Lifetime Service Award will be included in the 2007 FGCSA Membership Directory. BY LAWS: Mark Kann presented the following amendment to the FGCSA By Laws:"A golf course superintendent is one who is entrusted with the management and operation of the tract of land defined as a golf course, including involvement in construction and maintenance of golf courses and related equipment." The amendment as presented by Mark was approved and the ByLaws will be changed accordingly. EDUCATION: The board approved a suggestion to continue to apply for a GCSAA Superintendent Leadership Series seminar for next year's Poa. It was also mentioned that the webcasts offered by GCSAA are convenient and helpful and can be used by any GCSAA member. FINANCIAL: Chairman Joe Pantaleo made a motion to approve Suzanne Moracoa's suggestion to substitute a 4-star Fidelity Diversified Fund in place of one of the components in our portfolio that is not performing as well. The motion was approved. He also discussed the possibility of closing the Bank of America Reserve Account and investing the balance into the Morgan Stanley account. John Curran made a motion to close the Bank of America reserve account and transfer the funds to the Morgan Stanley account. Bill Kistler seconded the motion and the motion was approved. Joe then suggested that the FGCSA Finance Committee should meet to discuss Long Range Planning on the future re-organizing of the FGCSA. GOLF: Joe Ondo reported that the FGCSA Championship will be held at Southern Dunes on October 7th. All chapters will be invited to send a team to the annual event. Joe also announced that there are 160 players signed up for this year's Crowfoot. There will be two separate tournaments played on Saturday this year. suggestions were made at the meeting and Craig Weyandt and Kevin Downing will continue to work on restructuring the funding of the position. Matt Taylor reported that the FTGA has approved funding of Dr. Kenworthy in the amount of $40,000 to be divided among the FTGA, the Palm Beach GCSA, the FGCSA and the Florida Sod Growers Co-Op. Craig reported that Bruce Witt from Lake City Community College has begun his study on culturally diverse workforce and will be asked to send us a report for the Fall Board Meeting. MEMBERSHIP: All Externals were asked to remind their Chapter Secretaries and Treasurers that their chapter membership lists and FGCSA dues are required to be sent to the FGCSA office by August 10th. They must also be reminded to continue sending updates on a monthly basis of all members who pay their dues after Aug. 10th. BMP: Joel announced that Mike Thomas is still proofing the manual but feels that it will be ready for print soon. FTGA: Matt Taylor reported that there will be some major changes to the FTGA staff. Mike Smith has been given a six month contract to run the 2006 FTGA Conference & Show at the Hyatt in Bonita Springs. The education at the Show is even better this year and the FTGA is looking for a big turnout. Matt also reported that the FTGA will be supplementing the FGCSA monthly payments to Mike Goldie this year. We will pay Mike's monthly fee and then bill the FTGA for 50% on a quarterly basis. Matt requested that all Externals ask their chapter members to call Matt with their thoughts on research ideas that could be pursued by UF researchers. GCSAA: The GCSAA Chapter Delegates Meeting is scheduled for October 13th 15th. Be sure that your chapter representative has made his reservation with the GCSAA. Dale Kuehner will continue to be the Florida GCSA Voting Delegate with Darren Davis as Alternate Delegate. Joe Pantaleo is the Chairman for the FGCSA Reception in Anaheim and will be announcing the site for the reception in the next few weeks. SURVEY The 2007 FGCSA Survey questionnaire needs to be sent to all members before the end of November. Since there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m. to prepare for the Annual Meeting. Joe reported that the GCSAA Championship will be a three day event in Palm Springs in 2007. Winners from the 2006 Poa, the Crowfoot, the FGCSA Championship and the low average in these 3 events will qualify as members of the 2007 Florida team and have their entry fee paid by the FGCSA. RESEARCH: Craig Weyandt reported on the July 11th meeting at the Fort Lauderdale Research & Education Center to discuss the manner in which the technician's position is funded. Currently, Gary Pederson is employed and paid as a subcontractor by the FGCSA under the direction of Dr. John Cisar. All those present at the meeting agreed that Gary was doing a fine job. Perhaps no one else in Central Florida knew Larry Kamphaus better than Scott Welder. Welder literally began with Disney from the ground up as he worked for Buena Vista construction helping to carve Disney out of Central Florida's boonies west of Orlando. Welder has worked on all 99 holes of golf at Disney and even met his wife Doris "on the job." Welder, like so many superintendents, is an avid fisherman and helped to found and is still a member and past president of Disney's Bass Fishing Club. Welder also served on the board and is a past president of the Central Florida GCSA. Congratulations and thanks again for over three decades of service to the golf industry in Central Florida.
