Once again, the events will be held at Grand Cypress. I am sure Tom Alex and staff will have the place in great shape once again. I forgot to ask Tom but I do not think the Georgia Superintendents are having an event at Grand Cypress the same weekend, so I am sure we will not have to cancel. If you have not attended the Crowfoot or have not attended recently you should, it is a great time. At the same time Craig Weyandt will be leaving the FGCSA Board after serving his year as Past President. Craig has done an excellent job for us over the years not to mention that he stayed an extra year as President, something that had not been done in many years. My year as President was certainly bitter sweet. It was tough to see Marie Roberts leave after 24 years, but we are fortunate to have found Jennifer Innes to take her place. It was also a good move for the association to officially make Joel Jackson our Executive Director after all he has done for us over the years. I hope that by now most of you have registered for the upcoming FTGA Conference and Show to be held at the PGA National Resort & Spa from September 16th - 19th. This year's format has been slightly changed in hopes of growing the numbers of attendees. Dr. Bryan Unruh from the University of Florida has once again done a fantastic job with the educational programs. There is certainly something for all aspects of our industry. The keynote speaker this year will be NFL All-Pro middle linebacker Bill Bergy who played for the Eagles from 1974 - 1980. We look forward to seeing you there for this excellent opportunity for continuing education, and catching up with old friends. At the last FTGA Board meeting held in Orlando the FTGA decided to move forward with proposal from the University of Florida to update the Economic Impact Study for Turfgrass that was last done in 2002. When this study is completed in will give an updated look at the impact GREEN SHEE Editor: Joel Jackson, CGCS (407) 248-1971 (fax/phone) E -mail: FLGrn@aol.com News Coordinator: Jennifer Innes 1296 NE Oceanview Cir. Matt Taylor that not only golf courses have on the economy of Florida but the entire turf grass industry. Unfortunately this information has been needed too often this past year to defend turfgrass. We have used the information on issues ranging from water shortages; dealing the losing Methyl Bromide and explaining the benefits of urban turfgrass in light of multiple local fertilizer ordinances. Well this is my final message. It seems like it's been a long time coming. I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the summer, and make it a point to attend a few more chapter meetings next year to help support our association and our golf industry. Government Relations Report: Local Fertilizer Ordinances Jacksonville/Duval County has drafted a local fertilizer ordinance for adoption by the county commissioners. Green Industry representatives are generally pleased with the draft as the ordinance used a lot of the language and science contained in the model ordinance in the State Fertilizer Task Force recommendations. Golf courses were directed to follow the BMP Manual for Golf dated 1998 from UF/IFAS. We wrote and suggested that they might want to cite the updated version that was published in 2007. Look for more counties and cities to seek to enact fertilizer ordinances. Stay vigilant to local meetings and discussions and be prepared to present the BMP alternative for science-based, practical and proven environmental protection when applying nutrients. Your voice must be heard to help make a difference. Water Restrictions and Conservation Year round landscape watering restrictions are being discussed on a statewide basis among the 3 water management districts in peninsular Florida with two-day per week in the summer and one-day per week in the winter months. While these one size fits all restrictions are easier to administer they often don't reflect the soil types, rainfall distribution or other climatic differences from north to south or east to west in the state. It's a start, but we still need flexibility to keep landscapes healthy. Proper watering scheduling by homeowners could save a ton of water if they would only get educated and care enough to be more vigilant. There is increasing talk about restricting reclaimed water use on golf courses to divert more reclaimed to residential irrigation and get them off potable water. Before they go cutting off the effluent to golf courses, they need to assign a usage permit for adequate gallonage to serve the courses that have been safely disposing of their waste water all these years. Nemacur - The EPA, responding to a request by Bayer and members of its distribution system, have extended the deadline for sales of Nemacur already in the warehouses. The new date for all sales to cease is November 30, 2008. 2. The weather was much better this year and a great time was had by all. Congratulations to the winning boat in the Heaviest Kingfish category as well as the Top Boat Category - The "One & Done" captained by Mike Carver, with crew members Jason Maret, David Tandy, Mike Robertson, Jimmy Lane and Brian Sanders. The total pounds caught were a whopping 239 pounds with the Heaviest Kingfish weighing in at 44 pounds. The winner in the Heaviest Dolphin category was the "TeriAnn" captained by Bob Jacks with a 33 pound Dolphin. Crew members were Matt Schad, John Spiwak, A J White, Bill Rayside and Tim Whitaker. There were no Wahoo to be found this year. FUTURE OF GOLF TOURNAMENT ANOTHER GREAT SUCCESS By Steve Pearson The 28th Annual 'Future of Golf' PBGCSA Fund Raising Tournament was held Saturday, June 7th at The Falls CC. A new record of 39 foursomes(156 players) was basking on a beautiful, sunny but windy day at The Falls CC which had undergone a total greens renovation the previous summer. Now playing on Mini-Verde bermudagrass greens the players were tantalized with new green speeds and contours. As usual, the monies raised by the players and sponsors will be going to worthwhile benefits in turfgrass research, student scholarships and junior golf. The Palm Beach Chapter is proud in keeping to its tradition of raising substantial proceeds for these causes. Net proceeds for this year should again be close to $25,000. like to thank all of the sponsors who give generously each year, this year we are especially appreciative in light of the struggling economy. Minutes of FGCSA Spring Board Meeting Minutes of FGCSA Spring Meeting The spring 2008 Board meeting of the FGCSA Board of Directors was called to order by President Matt Taylor at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2009 at the Naples Beach Hotel. All officers were present. All Chapters were represented. The Chapter Representatives were: Calusa; Nancy Miller, Everglades; Wayne Kappuaff, Central Florida; Gary Myers, South Florida; Kelly Cragin, Coastal Plains; Shane Bass, Suncoast; Bob Wagner, Seven Rivers; Mark Kann, Treasure Coast; John Curran, North Florida; Rip Phillips, West Coast; Bill Kistler, Palm Beach; Kevin Downing, and Ridge; Tom Barnett. Others attending the meeting were: Craig Weyandt, Immediate Past President; Tim Hiers, Past President; Joe Pantaleo, Long Range Planning Committee Chairman; Jennifer Innes, Association Manager; Joel Jackson, FGCSA Executive Director; Casey Pace, FTGA Executive Director; Bill Tyde, President, Suncoast GCSA and John Gallagher; member Palm Beach GCSA. Minutes of the FGCSA Winter 2008 Board Meeting were approved. Fertilizer research Fund Project Report - Tim Hiers presented to the Board the Fertilizer Research Fund Project. The project will bring in $1.00 per ton of fertilizer. The participating fertilizer company will send to the FTGA office every four months a record/list of fertilizer purchases (in tons) by their customers. The FTGA will then send an invoice (strictly voluntary) to that customer at a rate of $1.00/ton to be remitted to the FTGA and deposited in the Fertilizer Research Fund. This new plan will cost less money per club than previously planned and it will be easier for the participating fertilizer companies to participate. Bob Wagner motioned for the board to approve the project as presented. The Board approved the new project and it will be enacted in September with full implementation in January. Benevolent Fund - A motion was approved for the Board to provide maximum assistance to Dan Jones and both custodial children for their college fund. Much consideration was given for Dan and Irene's many years of service to the FGCSA and the Golf Industry, i.e. setting up and operating the Florida Green for over 13 years, a major funding source. In addition an addendum to the Benevolent Fund was introduced and motioned by John Curran for approval. The Board unanimously approved. The change in wording will read as follows: "...In addition, discretionary donations or gifts would be considered upon the death of a member, spouse's relative, or nonmember, but involved in the golf/turf industry. Any FGCSA member/nonmember in the golf/turf industry or surviving spouse, each child or custodial child is eligible for assistance. The Board also approved a motion by Kevin Downing allowing funds that were donated by the FGCSA to the West Virginia GCSA in memory of George Beljan, father of Jan Beljan, to move from an Operating Account donation line item to a Benevolent Fund line item. Financial Statement - Bill Kistler presented the current financial statements. Gary Myers motioned for the financials to be approved. The Financials were approved. The First Draft of the 2008/2009 Operating and Publications Budget were introduced. The Florida Green will work on reducing costs in the upcoming fiscal year by removing the cover gate-fold and going to a self contained mailing format. The new format will be on 801b paper. Jennifer presented the Board with figures of the current production costs and the anticipated production costs in the new format. The Board agreed to begin cost saving measures with the Fall 2008 issue. A letter will be mailed to the current advertisers announcing the change and the additional advertising opportunities that will become available; inside front cover ad space. In addition, ad rates will increase this year to respond to rising costs of production and postage. Additional donation line items were discussed with some concern and discussion over our donation line items. These items will be tabled until the budget is completed and the availability of funds assessed. Jennifer will also find out the anticipated costs for the Spring regulatory Tour so we can create a line specific item in the Budget. The Executive Board will work on filling in the remaining line items and will present a completed budget to the Board 30 days prior to the Annual Meeting for changes and/or tentative approval. External V.P's were reminded to communicate to their chapter Secretary/Treasurers that a list of new members needs to be submitted to the FGCSA office by August 15th for inclusion in the Membership Directory. Chapters will no longer send in a check with their lists, but will be invoiced by the FGCSA office once the member's names are received. The Chapter's were reminded that the FGCSA dues will increase to $80.00 this year. LRP - Joe Pantaleo updated the Board on the Long Range Planning committee. The FGCSA is currently on track investigating new website design possibilities and also moving forward with the planned Membership dues increase as well as the advertising rate increase. We will continue to investigate cost cutting measures as well as revenue producing ideas. Executive Director Report - Joel Jackson will continue to work on an Environmental Position Paper which will emphasize recognizing and promoting the BMP manual. Information was presente to the Board for review and comment. « ....Continuation of Spring Board Minutes Joel felt we need buy-in and support from the major golf associations in order to move forward with this project. (CM A A, Florida State Golf Association, Golf Course Owners Association, PGA sections) Water restrictions - movement on FGCSA proposals to modify water allocation methods has been slow. Water consultant Bruce Adams has proposed filing a variance laying out our rationale, evidence and proposals for the methodology which will provide more equitable and sustainable water allocations. Publications - Kevin Downing offered an idea to include a Board Member's Golf Pro tip in the magazine to include more about the game vs., the course in the magazine. Joel will explore the suggestion. Since the Florida green was discussed at length during budget and Long Range Planning discussions, nothing more was presented. Membership Directory Ad sales from the 2009 Directory have begun. We have already secured advertisers and more insertion orders are arriving daily. Reception Report: The final reception financials were reported to the Board. We ended up just under $6,000.00 over budget. We budgeted accurately for food and drinks, but because of the nature of this year's reception there were some unanticipated costs. Paul Crawford did an excellent job with planning and managing the reception and, most importantly, Marie enjoyed her send-off. Next's year's reception will be held in New Orleans. Jennifer submitted a proposed location but will investigate its proximity to the hotel and any safety concerns. She will also look into using busses to transport guests back and forth. Projected figures will be inputted in the budget prior to the Annual Meeting. Education Committee - Mark Kann presented the Board with a list of upcoming educational opportunities. Specifically the Seminar on Friday May 9th with Tommy Witt and the UF/IFAS Turfgrass field day an May 21st. Financials - Craig presented to the Board the Morgan Stanley Account financials. In lieu of the economy the account looks good with only a minor decline in value and the changes to the portfolio that were made last year have proven to be positive. Membership Wayne Kappauf presented the current membership data. A reminder was made to all Chapters to prepare for membership renewals and new members. It will be interesting if membership numbers will change with the increase in dues and the current economic climate. It was discussed whether any of the chapters have used the T.A.N, memberships to help tap into the 30% of non-members. This is something the Chapters should re-evaluate. that are occurring at UF/IFAS are not disproportionate to the University cuts. Most of the cuts will occur on the admi n side. The FTGA Conference and Show planning is in full swing. It will be held September 16-19 at the PGA National Resort and Spa with an "Accelerate Your Business and Profits" theme. This year an Awards Luncheon will be held in which all participates are encouraged to attend. In addition, this year's Corn Boil will be held off-site at a unique hunting/sports lodge on Thursday night, Sept. 18th. GCSAA - A letter of recommendation will be submitted by the FGCSA to the GCSAA nominating Bob Randquist to run as Secretary/Treasurer of the GCSAA. SOP Manuals - Updated SOP Manuals were handed out to the Board. Turf Grass Workshop - The USDA is sponsoring a Turf Conference on May 1314th in Orlando. This is a great opportunity for our industry to unite and present our needs for basic research in the future. New Business - Kevin Downing requested a copy of the local chapter's budgets to bring to the GCSAA to show and discuss the realities of the local chapter's abilities to take on projects, donate funds, hire staff etc. FTGA- The FTGA is working hard to revitalize the association to its roots and core values by increasing membership. Currently the FTGA has 800 members. Casey also reported that the budget cuts The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 pm.
