Presite What a Show! the players and the matches was interesting and the insider comments were priceless. GCSAA promises to have it on video soon. Sorry more of you folks couldn't make it this year but it was a good one. The numbers were noticeably down at both the golf tournament and the conference and show, but still there was a pretty good turnout considering the economic slump we're in. New Orleans looks like it is recovering well from all of the devastation of the hurricanes a few years ago. There was a memorial statue of a "scrap house" in a tree across the street from the convention center paying respects to the casualties and survivors of Katrina. First I would like to thank all of the sponsors who sponsored the reception I thought it was a good time, and we really appreciate you stepping up this year. Alright, I'm going to make another bid to get you guys to go to the FGCSA web site and answer the BMP checklist question. It is just going to help us know whether you have done the list or not. If there is still a number that have not done it, maybe we could do a tour around the state on BMP training where we fill out the checklist at a class and get some CEU's for our pesticide licenses and GCSAA PDI education points. There are no right or wrong answers. It's an assessment of where you are in the checklist. But we need to know the numbers before we can start using them in our favor. President's Message By Shane Bass, CGCS And what can you say - the best golfers are in Florida! I'm not one of them, but how about Seth Strickland winning three times now and two back to back, I don't know about you guys that compete in the Championship Division but I would like to see a three-peat in San Diego. Congratulations Seth. To: The Calusa GCSA From: Ms. Cher Hollar Subject: My Sincere Gratitude I am humbled by your expression of graciousness and generosity that Kamryn and I experienced at the Phil Hollar Memorial Golf Tournament. Phil was lucky to be part of such a group of fine men and women. Because the gift was for the family, I chose to use the proceeds to help pay off Kamryn's and Logan's college student loans. That will benefit them by increasing their monthly I have always been somewhat envious of Phil's occupation. Where else can one spend days in such a beautiful environment with great people? Thank you most for caring about Phil. It was very evident that you are a brotherhood. That part of our (my) life will be greatly missed. I Will Miss I will miss watching for the wind and clouds on a cold winter's night. I will miss watching the rain gauge wondering if the 18th fairway will flood. I will miss waiting for the ospreys to return to their nest for the season. I will miss the moonlight from the golf cart while setting the clocks. I will miss watching the sprayer truck deposit the foam to track his rounds. I will miss looking for the nematodes, grubs and algae on the greens. I will miss making the rounds for the water usage counts for SFWMD. I will miss the before sun wake-up calls to beat the golfers. I will miss watching golf carts being fished from lakes. I will miss the joy from a well-placed drive. I will miss the "next time" comment after a slice or hook. But most of all I will miss the person who allowed me to experience this piece of heaven. Sincerely, Cher Hollar (Editor's Note: The Calusa GCSA raised $5,080.00 for the Hollar family at the Phil Hollar Memorial Tournament.) Minutes of the FGCSA Winter Board Meeting The Winter 2009 Board Meeting of the FGCSA Board of Directors was called to order by President Shane Bass at 12:50 p.m. on Friday, January 16th at Disney's Osprey Ridge Golf Course. All officers were present. All Chapters were represented. The Chapter Representatives were: Calusa, Nancy Miller; Everglades, Wayne Kappuaff; Central Florida, Mike Stem; South Florida, Kelly Cragin; Suncoast, Bob Wagner; Treasure Coast, Greg Pheneger; Seven Rivers, Mark Kann; Palm Beach, Steve Pearson; West Coast, Kevin Sunderman; Ridge, Tom Barnett; North Florida, Chris McCranie Others attending the meeting were: Kevin Downing, Palm Beach GCSA President; Ralph Dain, GCSAA Field Staff,; Todd Lowe, USGA; JohnFoy, USGA; Mike Goldie, Lobbyist; Jennifer Innes, Association Manager; Joel Jackson, FGCSA Executive Director Minutes of the FGCSA Fall 2008 Board Meeting were approved as written. Government Relations - Mike Goldie updated the Board on the new Senate; there has been a proposed 2.8 million budget reduction. The state is working hard to find additional revenue sources; tax internet sales, logo branding, offshore dock stamps, etc. Fertilizer issues - some sponsors want a total preemptive package. Nurseries are looking at the Florida Friendly Yards. The DEP is potentially adopting the program. The senate will meet early next week to finalize ideas. Fees for inspections will be doubled - the state needs these programs to be selfsustaining. There will be 3 weeks of working committee joint sessions of representatives and senate. This would be a good time for representatives of the FGCSA to meet with new senate and congressional members; Feb 2-6, Feb 9-13, and Feb. 16-20. USGA Update - John Foy updated the Board on the USGA, reiterating the USGA's support for the Association and Industry. Please communicate to your chapters that TAS service is out there. The USGA is gathering information for cost cutting opportunities without affecting the golf courses. The USGA will also be employing some cost-cutting measures in house; the Green Section will be available on-line only. The USGA will also discontinue regional meetings but will newly offer wi-fi meetings - a great opportunity to dial in and have a 1-02 hour presentation (eventually offering CEU points). Currently this is only available to TAS subscribers. There is also current discussion of discontinuing the paper publication of the Green Section. GCSAA Field Office - Ralph Dain The GCSAA has discontinued regional education programs and the Superintendent Leadership Series. Numbers for the GIS show are down this year. The GCSAA is anticipating a 10-15% decline in participation. Next year the show format will change; Wednesday and Thursday will be the Show only with education on Monday, Tues' and Friday. Treasurer's Report - Gary Myers presented to the Board the Publications and Operations budget reports for the first quarter. Gary requested a forecast column be included in future reports. The budget report was approved. Executive Director Report • Local governments are creating their own fertilizer ordinances at the end of 2008. Joining Jacksonville/Duval, Marion and Orange Counties, the City of Tampa is looking at a fertilizer ordinance that will still be covered under the BMP manual. We need to keep pushing science out to the local governments. Promoting and endorsing the BMP is the easiest way to show our industry's commitment. The water management districts were prepared to ratify the year-round lawn and landscape watering restriction of 12 days per week depending on time year and region. Dr. George Hocmuth has indicated that IFAS is also working on a sustainable funding program to provide a more consistent flow of research dollars. Several of us met with Dr. Hocmuth and Dr. Nell in Plant City to discuss names of potential donors who might consider endowment funding and estate donations to a perpetual Turf research endowment Fund. The GCSAA sent us a $3,000 grant for Chapter Outreach which will be used to help fund the FTGA Turfgrass Economic Impact Study. In turn we will work with GCSAA to meet some criteria and show how we used the grant money to further connect the golf course superintendent with the success and vitality not only of the golf course but the golf industry in Florida. Publications - We are currently evaluating ways to reduce costs associated with the Florida Green by investigating additional means of communicating. The Association will move forward to develop and explore possible new website design integrating the web and the Florida Green. Long Range Planning - The FGCSA will look into initiating a Grass Roots Giving program to seek research donations from individual members. Along with this, Jennifer will look into developing a tax deductible Research account separate so contributions can be tax deductible. She will update the board on the status of this account as information becomes available. The committee also heard our long time publications manager Larry Kieffer talk about the future of print publications and advertising revenue. Larry will prepare a test web site to see what kind of features we want and how we can leverage print and web communications to preserve our advertising revenue. Education Committee - Mark Kann handed out a list of past Poa Annua seminar topics and speakers and asked for input for the 2009 seminar in light of GCSAA's cancellation of the Leadership Series and Regional Seminars. John Foy volunteered to serve as the presenter for the 2009 seminar with a topic on cost cutting in hard times while protecting turf quality. Research - Steve Pearson sent a packet showing all the current research proposals the FGCSA has funded and has committed to fund to all the External VP's. Hopefully local Chapters are working to create a line item in their budgets making a commitment of research dollars to the FGCSA. Steve Pearson presented a check from the Palm Beach Chapter to the FGCSA Research Fund in the amount of $ 10,000.00. Matt Taylor has created a letter to send to major vendors/suppliers soliciting support for the Economic impact Study. Awards - Nancy Miller presented to the Board the two nominations received for the President's Award. Morgan Stanley - Matt Taylor presented to the Board the most recent Morgan Stanley account statements reflecting the changes Suzanne Moracco recommended to the Board at the Summer Board meeting. These changes seem to have proved effective - with the account not losing any money for that reporting period. Membership - Wayne Kappauf presented the current membership data. Our current membership numbers are only 8 short from last year. We have met our budget numbers and since October we have gained 64 members. There has not been a significant reduction in Assistants in light of the dues increase. FTGA - The FTGA Regional Turf Seminars are continuing. There are 3 more seminars still scheduled to occur. GCSAA - Joel Jackson will have Darren and Dale e-mail to the Board their recommendations for the GCSAA Elections. If your chapter feels differently it will be up to the chapters to let them know. The meeting was adjourned at 3:02 pm. The Spring Board Meeting will be held in Naples on May 7th at 1:00pm. Lunch will not be served at this meeting as the President's Dinner will be the same evening. The GCSAA Education Conference continues to be a vital resource for the golf industry as 5,258 seats were filled for 121 seminars. Content for the seminars focused on the professional development of attendees, including personal skills (finances, time management, quality of work/family life); leadership (teamwork, professionalism); communications (administration, management, scientific content, outreach); operations management (financial management, resource allocation, regulatory compliance); and resource utilization (staff, materials, equipment, golf course). An additional 50 hours of panel discussions, sessions and forums that touched on such subjects as the nation's economy, diversity, media/public relations, environmental compliance, etc., were offered. "Continuing education has become an absolute necessity for golf course superintendents," Kuhns said. "Not only is it important for their professional development, but for the success of the golf facility as well. I believe the quality of the programs and the number of attendees is a testament to the importance golf course superintendents and employers place on GCSAA programs." One of the highlights from the GCSAA Education Conference was the 15th annual Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition, won by the Purdue University team of Jack Weatherway, Eric Haub, Eric Wanstrath and Chris Ulrich, ending Iowa State's streak of seven straight titles. The Turf Bowl challenged students from universities/institutions to identify turfgrass species, diseases, weeds, and insects, as well as answer questions on mathematics, growth, and development. The exam also allowed teams to collaborate for the case study portion and submit an essay that addressed business management facets of the golf course superintendent profession, while emphasizing the importance of communication skills. The third and sixth-place teams were also from Purdue, while Iowa State (2nd), Maryland (4th), Penn State (5th, 8th), Arkansas (7th), Tennessee (9th) and Wisconsin (10th) rounded out the top 10, as 309 students from 83 teams participated in the competition.
