Great job Shane. In addition, thanks to all our Directors that has volunteered their time to represent their chapters. We would not have been able to succeed or position the state of Florida within the GCSAA and our allied association task groups to the degree of success we have achieved without their time and support. The same goes for many of you who have represented the golf industry at local meetings on the issues. I hope everyone who attended the Crowfoot Open came away with some great information from the seminar and low scores on the golf course. Speaking of great education, don't forget to take advantage of the opportunity to obtain valuable CEU's for your pesticide license and PDI certifications during the 57 th Annual FTGA Conference and Show. Not to worry. The FTGA has put together an excellent education program, trade show, golf and fishing tournaments, and of course, the ever popular Corn Boil. The keynote speaker will be Tim Rosaforte. Many of you may remember Tim from his on air interviews and comments during the U. S. Open. FTGA has put this package together at a very affordable price. I invite you to come to Palm Beach Gardens at the PGA National Resort and Spa September 16 th - 181 Take this opportunity while you're there to meet Peter Snyder, FTGA's new Executive Director. By now plans are in place and preparations are being made by many to overseed your course for the winter season. I also know many of us will not be overseeding this year for a variety of reasons; budgets, reduced water usage, personal preference. Whichever option you choose, I hope everyone has a very successful and busy season at your club. If you are approached about having to register, please contact the FGCSA and/or Mike. Arsenic Threshold Levels - There is word on the street that EPA may be in the process of lowering the health effect threshold level of arsenic in the soil. This could affect golf courses, especially in the mix/load areas. We will be sitting in on some allied association meetings to discuss possible talking points to present to EPA to protect our interests without sacrificing environmental safety. 2. Allied Associations & Industry News: New FTGA Exec Director Peter Snyder has been hired by the FTGA to be their new Executive Director. I had coffee with Pete on Monday, August 10th in a This year's winners of the Crowfoot Open were: (1-r) Jim Torba in the Superintendent Division with a score of 70 and John Swaner from GASH in the Supplier Division with a score of 73. Jim also won a spot on the FGCSA State Team for the GCSAA Golf Championship in February. Minutes of the FGCSA Summer Board Meeting The Summer 2009 Board Meeting of the FGCSA Board of Directors was called to order by President Shane Bass At 9:00 am. Friday , August 7, 2009 At Disney's Osprey Ridge Golf Club.. All officers were present. All Chapters were represented. The Chapter Representatives were; Calusa: Nancy Miller; Everglades: Bill Davidson; Central Florida: Mike Stem; South Florida: Marcus Prevatte; Suncoast: Mark Todd and Darden Nicks; Ridge: Jim Rowland; Seven Rivers: Mark Kann; Treasure Coast: Roy MacDonald; North Florida: Rip Phillips; West Coast: Kevin Sunderman; and Palm Beach: Steve Pearson. Others attending the meeting were: John Foy, USGA; Todd Lowe, USGA; Jennifer Innes, Association Manager; Joel Jackson, FGCSA Executive Director; Ralph Dain, GCSAA, Suzanne Moraco, Morgan Stanley; and Mike Goldie, Lobbyist. Minutes of the FGCSA Spring 2009 Board Meeting were approved. President, Shane Bass introduced the guests and they gave reports and updates to the board. USGA - The USGA is partnering with the Central Florida GCSA by helping to provide the education for the Crowfoot Open and looks forward to continuing this partnership. The USGA also announced that there will not be an increase in TAS visit fees for 2010. The USGA has an upcoming Women's mid-amateur event in Ocala and 2 more events next year. GCSAA Update - Ralph Dain updated the Board on the progress of the Golf Preserves project. There has been and will continue to be a series of conference calls discussing the future of this project. The current focus is Colorado as grant money is being sought through Colorado State. There are still specifics that need sorting and the science behind the calculations needs to be determined and supported. The GCSAA will host an environmental session at the GIS this year from 3-5 on Feb 8th. Housing is currently available on-line for hotels participating in the GIS housing block. The GCSAA deadlines for award nominees are approaching. The deadline for the Excellence in Government Relations Award is Oct. 15th, The GCSAA Legacy Award deadline is August 15th and The GCSAA Environmental Award deadline is Oct. 18th. The GCSAA is also currently promoting Get Golf Ready facilities. A leadership Academy will be held Sept. 910 in Lawrence for interested chapters and the Chapter Delegate Meeting will be held in Kansas City - the deadline to register is August 17th. Ralph also shared with the Board the New York Times article that appeared August 5th giving good press to the environmental and water conservation of our industry. Financial Statement - Gary Myers presented the current financial statements. The 4th quarter financial reports were approved; however, the 2009/2010 budget was not approved as drafted. Jennifer and Joel will discuss and make some line item changes and email the Board the revised budget on Monday for approval. Morgan Stanley - Suzanne Moraco presented to the Board an update of the Morgan Stanley Account. Overall the FGCA account has seen an excellent return of 6.94% since inception. This is a typical all weather portfolio so it has managed to continue showing a good return even during this tough economic time. Executive Director Report - Joel continued to stress the importance of our Association and its members to support the BMP's. If industry trends continue it will not be long before Superintendents will be required to use the BMPs. Joel suggested now is a great opportunity for us to get in front of and shape this issue rather than react to it after the fact. That means that a unified state-wide push to get all superintendents to make some sort of commitment to the BMPs, like 97% of the Georgia's superintendents did on their Water Use-Conservation BMPs. Joel presented to the Board a draft letter from John Piersol seeking donations to support the development of a master plan for portions of nearly 1,000 acres on the Lake City Community College Campus to include a couple of golf holes to demonstrate how golf and the environment can co-exist by using innovative design and best management practices. Please take this idea back to your chapters for support. Government Relations - The Florida Legislature passed and Governor Christ signed the SB494 and SB2080 into law this year. These two pieces of legislation bring science based BMP language into the laws and require local governments to also explain and scientifically document their more restrictive fertilizer and landscape ordinances. Methyl Bromide - The latest word from Hendrix and Dail indicate that EPA has once again fast tracked it's decision making process of revising the MeBr label and there is good likelihood that turfgrass will come off the label possibly by the end of 2009. MSMA - The decision is final = the sale of MSMA in Florida will cease on December 31, 2009 of this year and use of existing stocks will be allowed in Florida only on non-vulnerable soils until December 31,2010. Publications - Florida Green - We are currently in need of hand on topics for the Summer 2010 issue. Cover story nominations are also needed from the following chapters no later than Aug. 15th; Calusa and Suncoast. Membership Directory - A second batch of Membership Directory advertising solicitation letters and insertion orders have been mailed out for the upcoming 2010 Membership Directory. A reminder to Chapters that a final list of member names along with club, class, address, etc. needs to be e-mailed to the FGCSA office no later than August 15th in order for the member names to be included in the Directory. Education Committee - Mark Kann reported this year's Poa sparked a new relationship with the USGA, which we look forward to continuing in the future. With the help of the USGA we were able to put together a strong program that was especially timely. The seminar was well attended drawing an even larger crowd than last year. Mark also provided a list of educational opportunities available throughout the year which are posted on the FGCSA website and given to all Board members. Mark is also serving as the co-chair of the Education Committee of the FTGA Conference and Show. Be sure to check out those opportunities on the FTGA website. G o l f - T h e FGCSA Golf Championship will be held at Southern Dunes on September 26, 2009. The deadline to enter is September 19, 2009. Registration forms are available on the FGCSA website. If you have any questions, please contact Joe Ondo at 407-657-7565. Research - Steve Pearson presented the Research Account Update. The final payment to the Dr. Crow Biological Control of Sting Nematodes was made. The FGCSA also contributed to the FTGA's Economic Impact Study which is reflected in the new budget year statement. New research projects will be explored. Membership - Jennifer presented to the Board the current Membership Data. We are still short approximately 350 members. Please remind your members the importance of renewing and also remind your chapters to get their up to date membership information in to the FGCSA office so that your members can be included in the FGCSA directory. Government Relations - Mike Goldie reported the Board that things have been quiet right now in Tallahassee. The legislature will resume in September. There have been several special elections throughout the state, but none that should have a direct effect on us. There may be some agencies calling representing the DEP regarding the local "Right to Know' policy. This pertains to chemical storage. Golf Course do not generally fall in the category that requires registration, but state agencies are looking for revenue (registration fees), so if you are contacted about possible registrations or fees give Mike a call so he can check it out. Awards - Nancy Miller recapped for the board the recipients of awards this year. They included: John and Shelly Foy Marie Roberts Award for Lifetime Service, Craig Weyandt - 2009 FGCSA Distinguished Service Award, Rick Tatum (Everglades) and Dale Kuehner (South Florida) - President's Award for Lifetime Service. Please be thinking about nominations for this upcoming year and get your nominations in before the Spring Board Meeting in Naples. FTGA- The FTGA Conference and Show is ready to go. It will be held September 16-19 at the PGA National Resort and Spa with Going and Growing Green "The Next Step" as the theme. There will be free educational opportunities available on Friday with the opportunity to earn Core pesticide license CEU's. New Business - Joel reminded the Board that FarmLinks has invited the FGCSA Board to their facility. He will speak with them further about a possible time frame, but the Board expressed interest. Joel also informed the Board that Keith Tolson of GeoSyntac would like to form a coalition of allied associations as the EPA moves to lower clean-up threshold levels of arsenic in the soil. Nancy Miller informed the Board that Dr. Berndt of Hodges University in Ft. Myers is working to get a turf grass program revived in southwest Florida. The meeting was adjourned at 11:10am. The Fall 2009 Board Meeting will be held at 1:00pm at Disney's Osprey ridge on Friday, October 16, 2009 with lunch at noon.
