I have or had prostate cancer and decided to have it removed rather than the other alternatives such as radiation. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. It is also the second leading cause of cancer death in men. There are a lot of statistics surround the survival rate based on a lot of factors. I have been told that my survival percentage is 90 to 95%. The key is catching it early. In my last message, I talked about visiting my dermatologist twice a year to get checked for skin cancer and that all of us should be checked regularly because of working out in the sun as we do. I also would recommend getting an annual physical. This is how my cancer was discovered. I had a physical in December. My PSA test was high and he recommended I see an Urologist. I saw the Urologist and he recommended that I have a biopsy performed. They did the biopsy and on January 31, my Doctor told me that I had prostate cancer but, it was early and curable. To soften the impact, he actually told me it was early and curable before he told me I had prostate cancer. I was taken aback at first but quickly accepted it and was ready to move forward. I immediately told him that I was a "One and Done Guy" and wanted removal. He understood but, I still needed to meet with a radiation oncologist. The radiation oncologist I met with told me that he would opt for removal if it was him as well. I went back to my doctor and was ready to get it done. I am writing this on Tuesday and surgery is scheduled for Thursday. The surgery is pretty significant and the recovery will take some time, perhaps several months for full recovery. My doctor has told me that I have several things going in my favor that can be passed on to any of you that join this club in the future. Early detection, positive attitude and Continued on page 3... On a more positive note we should all offer congratulations to Thomas Vlach, CGCS at TPC Sawgrass and Chris Flynn, CGCS at Marriott's Grande Vista Resort for being honored with Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards for 2010 in the National Resort Category. They were presented with their awards at the Golf Industry Show. I will see several of you at the May Board of Directors Meeting and the Past President's Dinner. May/June Green Sheet 3 EXECUTIVE BY JOEL DIRECTOR'S JACKSON, REPORT C G C S 1. Legislative update: At last report the House and Senate Fertilizer Model Ordinance bills (HB457 & SB606) were still making their way through committee hearings. While UF/IFAS, DEP, DACS and Water Management District fertilizer guidelines all stress feeding turf and landscapes during the "active growing season," activists and local politicians keep pushing for the right to ban fertilizer use in the growing/rainy season. The "home rule" advocates in the Association of Counties and League of Cities will put extreme pressure on state legislators to not usurp their powers to make emotional decisions at the local level. EPA's Numeric Nutrient Criteria: No solution yet to the Numeric Nutrient Criteria maze of lawsuits. The date to enact keeps getting pushed back while the debate goes on. While cities and counties join the lawsuits citing EPA's faulty science they then ignore science to promote their own local bans on fertilizer use. Always working both sides of the street! Local Fertilizer Ordinances: Some counties on the verge of enacting ordinances are taking a pause until the state model ordinance debate is over in Tallahassee. Collier County continues its discussions on their ordinance with more Environmental Advisory Committee meetings being held. We continue to hold out hope they will recognize green industry and golf BMPs in their final draft. NPDES: Some progress appears to be made in not including traditional terrestrial pesticide application in EPA's sweeping effort to implement a burdensome permitting program for the application of all pesticides "near" a body of water. Congress has come down in favor of having applicators follow approved FIFRA guidelines and not let this alteration of the Clean Water Act to take precedence over FIFRA regulations. Action Alerts: We have been forwarding and sharing a few more Action Alerts from GCSAA lately due to the NNC, NPDES, and Chlorothalonil actions taken by EPA. The numbers of response DO CARRY WEIGHT and show that we the end users are watching our government bureaucrats as they regulate our businesses and livelihoods. I ask you to please take the precious few minutes that it takes to submit your comments. A few clicks and your name and address so your voice can be united with others in defense of our industry. 2. Association Business: GCSAA and Allied Golf Associations will once again be making their annual trip to Washington this spring to educate politicians about the Golf Industry. At a time when the EPA seems to be legislating/regulating, without accountability to the voters, the We Are Golf effort is critical in providing balance and information on the issues. People often ask, "What is my association doing for me?" It's hard to put a dollar amount on value of the advocacy by the GCSAA and others. But it is and has made a difference. Outreach & Education I Government Relations: On March 27th, members of the FGCSA participated in the annual spring Regulator Tour. This joint effort headed by the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Assn and other Ag Associations to provide federal and state regulators to visit and see first and the operations of the Ag and Green Industries that they oversee. The tour goes from Ft. Myers to Clewiston, and always begins with the golf tour on Mondays. The group also sees, sod farms, nursery operations, citrus, cattle, dairy, sugar cane, vegetables and mosquito control operations. • FROM JENNIFER'S DESK...
