The snowbirds have flocked back to Florida and I am sure that everyone's course is a lot busier than it was just a few months ago. It has been busier over the last few weeks on the government relations side of things. Several bills have been moving around committees in the State Legislature that pertain to all of us in terms of fertilizer usage. We appreciate those of you who have been diligent about contacting your perspective legislators asking for their support of our green industries. Recently, Florida's Environmental Resource Commission voted to adopt the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's (FLDEP) version of the Numeric Nutrient Criteria rule as a substitute for the US EPA's NNC rule. The battle is far from over, but the FLDEP version contains an overwhelming amount of scientific research by I FAS and "real world" sampling and testing data that will be hard to dispute when coupled with the financial impact of the complying with the EPA rule as written. We have also made excellent progress on the Golf BMP Certification process. We are close to finalizing presentations that will be used as a review for taking the 3-part examination. It is not required that you attend the presentations prior to the test session, but it is highly encouraged. The Seven Rivers GCSA will be hosting one of the first full-day training sessions on March 22nd at the UF/IFAS Plant Science Research and Education Unit in Citra. The event will be open to everyone and will cover all three sections of the review of the BMPs followed by the complete certification exam. The Florida Reception at the GCSAA Conference and Show in Las Vegas is only a few months away. Be sure to follow the registration process that Jennifer will be sending out shortly and send your RSVP so you do not miss your chance to attend. This event will give everyone an opportunity to visit with fellow superintendents, industry partners and supporters of the FGCSA. Thank you to all of our Reception Sponsors! This is always a hopeful time as we begin a new year. It is full of potential and possibilities for personal and professional growth. The FGCSA is going to be investing time in strategic planning over the next few months to maximize it's value and services to it's members and sponsors. I look forward to seeing many of you in 2012. FEBRUARY 1 4 F T G A REGIONAL SEMINAR VERO BEACH FEBRUARY 2 1 Time sure does seem to fly; I'm not sure if it gets worse the older I get or the busier I become, but I can certainly say that it doesn't matter what I am doing it feels like another new year is here before I know it. It seems like it was only a couple of months ago that I was sending you e-mail after e-mail about the FGCSA Reception in Orlando. Lucky you, it is that time for me to bombard you again about the Reception in Las Vegas. We are excited to hold this year's reception on March 1, 2012 at The JET Nightclub in the Mirage Hotel and Casino from 7-10pm. It will certainly hold up to last year's event. I am asking that all superintendents who are planning to attend the FGCSA Reception register via the FGCSA website. If you DO NOT register you will not receive a wristband or invitation. Wristbands and invitations will only be mailed to those superintendents who register. You will be unable to enter the The JET without a proper wristband. Please go to www.floridagcsa.com and click on the information tab and then Reception. A prompt "Superintendents to RSVP click HERE" will be displayed. There you will find a link to complete a registration form. You may also type this URL directly into your browser: http://www.floridagcsa.com/ReceptionLasVegas. However, you are responsible for reporting accidental or unauthorized discharges into bodies of water, especially those waters that can leave your property. So while we may not be in the application paperwork stream, you need to find out under what situations you may need to take action. On November 29, 2011 Olde Florida Golf Club lost one of its own, Nathaniel "Nathan" Tutt. Nathan was 34 years old at the time of his passing. Nathan began work at Olde Florida on May 23, 2007 as an assistant superintendent. Nathan was employed in that capacity until March 20, 2011 when he returned to Franklin, Tennessee to be closer to family. A month prior to leaving Olde Florida, Nathan was diagnosed with Stage NIC Colorectal Cancer. A baseball-sized tumor was removed, but the cancer had already spread to his lymph nodes. He immediately began chemotherapy treatments, but after a dozen treatments the cancer had spread throughout his body. His wife Hillary, two-year old son Gavin and three-year old daughter Elena survive Nathan. They truly were the loves of his life. In 2007, as part of the application process to Olde Florida Nathan sent me a cover letter that I re-read this morning. In Nathan's letter he included a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt that read, "Believe in yourself. You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you stop to look fear in the face." The quote is very apropos of how Nathan lived his life. Nathan was a passionate warrior, but in the end the cancer was too strong of a force for him to overcome. Nathan held a bachelor of science in agronomy from the University of Tennessee. Prior to being employed by Olde Florida Nathan worked at Grey Oaks Country Club and The Legends Club of Tennessee. I will provide any further details or wishes of the family to Tom as they become available. Sincerely, Darren J. Davis Golf Course Superintendent DarrenJDavis@aol.com Jim Shaffer with the toys collected at the annual "Seven Rivers Toy Drive" event held at Juliette Falls. One thousand dollars worth of gifts were donated to the Citrus County Family Resource Center.
