I hope that everyone that made the trip out to Vegas had a good and productive experience. The whole event started with the FGCSA Golf Team winning first place in the GCSAA Golf Team Championship. Congratulations to the team of Deron Zendt, Steve Bernard, Bob Harper, and Steve Wright. Joel and Jennifer attended some chapter executive sessions early in the week and were able to pick up some great ideas that we can utilize for our Association. They also met with the Carolinas GCSA who is working on setting up the Rounds-4-Research Program for 2012. The program will provide an online site that will auction various golf packages for numerous golf courses to raise money for research. The CGCSA are finalizing the details and will get back with us soon. The Florida Reception, despite a late notice of location "name" change, was a fun time. The event provided an opportunity for everyone to enjoy some fun, food, drinks, and conversation and plenty of seating for tired feet. Thanks to our Industry Partners and Sponsors for helping us put on a great event. Thanks to attendees' generosity, we were able to raise over $1,000 for the Benevolent Fund. To cap off the week, Darren Davis was appointed to a one-year term as Director with the GCSAA. Congratulations, Darren. In the coming months, numerous chapters that will be hosting golf tournaments that will raise funds for great causes including turfgrass research. I hope you will all consider participating in these events and help contribute to raising critical funds to help support our industry. Having just returned from Las Vegas, I am eager to get back to work and share with the Board much of what I learned during the GIS. I attended a Chapter Executive's Session and an Editor's Session. These sessions are so valuable, as I not only get to learn from my colleagues through their stories of successes and failures, but I get reinvigorated in my role in the association. There is so much technology at our fingertips these days and trying to assess what is valuable to our association can be a little overwhelming! Listening to these other chapters and their experiences helps to identify those areas that can prove valuable to our members. Over the next couple of months I will work hard to integrate our website with Facebook. Log on - check out the Florida Golf Course Superintendents page and become a fan. You will be alerted of events, legislative issues, and as well as be able to post pictures of your chapter events to share with other FGCSA members. I also want to take a moment to thank our very generous Industry Partners and Reception Sponsors (listed on the following page). Without their support our annual reception would not be possible! This year's was no exception. The reception was held at 10AK in the Mirage Hotel and Casino. The venue proved to be superb and over 300 of our members attended! It looked like everyone who attended had the opportunity to mingle with their colleagues and have fun. Thank you for taking the time to RSVP - this is one small step that makes my job in planning the reception that much easier. I will continue to work to serve your needs. If there is something you would like to see the FGCSA do for you, please let us know. We are here for our members! Of course, we said YES! Maybe it just took this "Headline" event to finally bring us all together, to hear our individual stories and to realize how much we rely on each other for our daily business and the success of the whole golf industry. Post Legislative Session: are off and it's back to our work-a-day routines. One lesson that we've heard before but was re-emphasized by Senator Nancy Detert's aide as she toured our FGCSA display was to invite your state legislators (Senators and Representatives) to a chapter meeting when they are out of session and back home. Or invite them for a tour of a course with several of your key chapter leaders to discuss and show how we perform our BMPs and effective stewardship. We have bullet point handouts on the Economic and Environmental Impacts that can be made available anytime you need them. GCSAA Conference & Show News: The very good news from Las Vegas is that Darren Davis; current President of the Everglades GCSA is now a member of the GCSAA Board of Directors. Darren and Voting Delegate Dale Kuehner, CGCS waged a very competitive and successful campaign in which four candidates (two of which were incumbent Directors) were running for two open spots on the board. After all votes were cast Bill Maynard had a little over 6,000 votes, Rafael Barajas had a little over 5,000 (both incumbents), Darren had around 4,500 and Mark Jordan had 800. Maynard and Barajas retained their seats on the board, but since Director Keith Ihms was elected Secretary/Treasurer that created a 1year vacancy on the Board. Newly elected president Sandy Queen, CGCS convened a short meeting of all officers and directors and Darren was appointed to fill that vacancy for 201213. Darren says he expects that he will likely run for election for a full term again at next year's conference, and he thanks all those that supported him for Director. Meanwhile, this was Dale Kuehner's last year as the FGCSA Voting Delegate. Dale and family are moving back to the Pittsburgh area to run the family's golf course up there. Dale has had a keen passion for the voting delegate position and his continued involvement in GCSAA committees over the years has kept him in constant contact with chapter leaders all across the country which has been invaluable in leveraging votes for the candidates that the FGCSA has supported over the years. Dale, on behalf of all FGCSA members I sincerely thank you for your time and service to our association. You will be missed. Don't M i s h e FGCSA Poa Annua Seminar May 18th 8:00am - Noon Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club In collaboration s T USGA. Regional Meeting Staying the Course: Golf Course Maintenance in 2012 It has undoubtedly been a tough few years for golf courses in Florida. Some things are better and others are still a challenge. What issues face golf course maintenance in 2012 and how do we continue to move forward? Working together to overcome these challenges is in everyone's best interest. Team work is essential. Join us on Friday, May 18th at the Naples Beach Hotel as we present challenges and solutions for staying the course in golf course maintenance. Be sure to check the FGCSA website for updates and registration forms: www.floridagcsa.com Follow us on Facebook and Twitter: https://www.facebook.com/FGCSA https://twitter.com/FGCSA USGA Regional Golfer Meetings Coming in April As USGA agronomists, we hear and see it all. A common concern is always how to get golfers and course officials to understand why basic golf course maintenance practices are so important. Times have changed, and we all have less to work with and more to answer to. Doing more with less, or even keeping basic levels of maintenance practices in place is more important than ever, and yet is harder than ever. We invite course officials and you to attend a Regional Golfer Meeting to hear USGA staff discuss basic golf course maintenance practices, why they are important, and what's going to happen to the golf course if these practices aren't accomplished. A USGA Rules Official will also be on hand to discuss changes in the Rules of Golf. This is a good opportunity to have course officials hear from an unbiased source, and to have all their questions answered. Registration for the April, 2012 USGA Regional Golfer Meetings will be emailed to superintendents in the next few days.
