Chapter Reporters: I'm looking for people in the various chapters to act as "reporters" or "correspondents" to send in short reports on the outcomes of all the chapter meetings and events that I can't possibly cover. We need to communicate more often with each other and record the awards and presentations and share the "take away" points of local chapter education sessions and "aha" moments and ideas generated at chapter meetings. The Green Sheet and Florida Greens and our Facebook page are places we can do that. If you're willing, please let me know. We'll give you credit and may even create a category in the Florida Green masthead for Chapter Reporters. State Representative Steve Crisafulli, who is the Speaker Designate, held a meeting with stakeholder groups and outlined his plan of action to rein in the numerous types of fertilizer ordinances being proposed around the State of Florida. Representative Crisafulli outlined a bill to create a 13-person task force made up of all stakeholder groups. The task force will meet over the next 2-% years to resolve the fertilizer issue using science. During that period of time, while the task force is meeting, local governments cannot pass a fertilizer ordinance except the Model Ordinance. The 2013 state legislative session ends on May 3rd so there is not a lot of time to pass this proposal. The FGCSA will have a seat on this task force. Along those lines photos taken with smart phones are fine. Just don't send them in Small or Medium size formats, use the Large option for the best resolution. I want to thank folks like Lee Crosby and Bob Toski, who currently take photos of Suncoast and Everglades events and share with me to use in our publications. They have been doing this voluntarily for several years. Thanks guys! Other Communications: Sure like to see more FGCSA members "Like" our FGCSA Facebook. It's a friendly format to receive updates on what's going on and seeing photos on topics rather than just words all the time. This was the 16th year we have partnered with the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association for this pro-active advocacy opportunity. FLORIDA GATEWAY COLLEGE (LAKE CITY) ANNOUNCES PROGRAM CHANGES Starting in the fall, 2013, the Golf Course Operations program is returning to a twoyear format, which is how the program started in 1967. This will reduce the cost of the GCO program and reduce the amount of time a student has to be on campus, which should help in recruiting. At the same time, we are suspending operation of the turf equipment program until we can develop a strategy to operate it as separate program. Over the last several years, most of the turf equipment students have been pre-GCO students, so we were really not graduating many equipment technicians. Just suspending this program, gives the college the opportunity to keep the donated equipment and parts and maintain the curriculum in our inventory of classes while we think through other options. the recruiting we are doing. Recently, Bruce committee that monitors our programs, Witt has been communicating with high so we would never enroll more students school golf coaches and players and than we can successfully place, but now attending high school golf matches to interest we need to increase student numbers in them in our program. Sincerely, John R. Piersol Director of Golf & Landscape Operation We have a strong industry advisory During the Central Florida GCSA's Vendor Expo in March, UF/IFAS professor Dr. Bryan Unruh discussed the results of the latest nutrient management research and how light intensity studies might change some of our turf management practices. When talking to person interested in getting a formal education in golf operations, please be sure to emphasize that the GCO program is now two years and for current and potential technicians that the turf equipment program is just on hold. Those students who have the ATD in Turf Equipment Technology and who want to work towards the AS degree in Turf Equipment Management (TEM) will still be able to do so as the second year of TEM is mostly general education and business courses. Some other positive changes include the development of several GLO courses for online delivery. We have botany, agricultural chemistry, soils & fertilizers, irrigation, and materials calculations developed now, and we are working on landscape plants. After those, we want to develop a turf class and a pest control class for online. These courses along with the general education requirements would allow a student to take general courses at a local college and enough online with FGC that a student could potentially have to be on campus for only one year. Plus, a student who earns our AS degree in GCO can articulate that to the Bachelor of Applied Science in Business Administration through Saint Leo University all in four years. This is a great combination. We could use recruiting help from both alumni and others to supplement On April 11th, GCSAA Director Darren Davis and Florida Field Rep Ralph Dain made a "State of the Industry" and "GCSAA Member Resources" presentation at the Central Florida Assistants Academy meeting.
