The FGCSA Standard Operating Procedures call for 19 different chair positions to be filled. Then the SOP calls for full committees to be formed. We found this to be counter-productive as it's sometimes difficult to find motivated individuals willing to chair and serve on these committees. Many committees have similar roles and become redundant or work against each other. This year we are asking a number of committees to work together towards common goals. This message will highlight some of the committee objectives for this year. The Government Relations Committee is coordinating efforts to stay on top of any ordinances or proposed restrictions that may affect our business. Each chapter has a representative on this committee led by Greg Pheneger of the John's Island Club. This committee will help to organize efforts to represent our views dealing with issues as they come up. The Membership Committee is working with Ralph Dain, GCSAA Field Staff, and local chapters to identify potential new members as well as former members who have not renewed. A focus is being placed on how to better engage these superintendents as well as those who are current members. The membership committee will be working to better communicate services and benefits provided by the FGCSA to the locai chapters and their members. They will also be working with superintendents from across the state to develop ideas for new research projects. COMMUNICATIONS REPORT By J o e l J a c k s o n , C G C S Retired "What's Up, D.O.C." Joel Jackson, CGCS Publications: As I write this report, the first round of "finished" proofs of the copy and photos has been completed for the Fall 2013 Florida Green and we're waiting for the ad insertions deadline. On deck for the 2014 Florida Green Winter Issue we will journey from Juliette Falls GC in the rolling sand hills and oak trees near Ocala to the cypress heads and palm trees of Ft. Myers, as we visit with Stuart Taylor at the Plantation G&CC. In the new year we will also visit and learn about FGCSA Golf: Stuart Bothe from the Vanderbilt Country Club and Everglades GCSA shot a 71 to win the FTGA Individual Stroke Play Championship. Stuart joins XXX, winner of the Poa Classic and Deron Zendt, winner of the FGCSA Championship as qualifiers for the FGCSA Golf Team to compete at the GCSAA Golf Championships in Orlando in February. The remaining team members will be decided at the North Florida Fall Classic at Amelia Island and the Central Florida Crowfoot Open at Grand Cypress. Photo tips: If taking photos inside and using a flash, don't have your subjects stand right against a wall, but move out 56 feet away to avoid shadows showing up around their heads. Better still try some new scenic locations including nice landscaping or other interesting features. Get creative and have some fun with it. Communications: I wrote an article called "Putting Greens and Politics" for the Golf is Our Game newsletter which goes to pro shops in courses primarily from Tampa to Daytona Beach. It discusses the need for good science in ordinance making so we can still have good golf courses that are environmentally friendly. The Chapter Reporters corps is growing. So far, Andy Jorgensen, Seven Rivers; Kirsten Conover and Jeff Zimmerman, Everglades; Bob Coffey, North Florida; Brian Main, Palm Beach; Gary Chaney, Treasure Coast; and Christi Haley and Trent Inman, West Coast and I believe Chris Flynn, Central Florida have volunteered or where drafted into service. In the remaining four chapters Stuart Taylor, Calusa; Nick Kearns, Suncoast, Ricky Reeves, South Florida and Scott Scamerhorn, Ridge will be my "go-to" folks until I get official notice. If any chapter has some newsworthy meetings, education, events or awards presentation that have occurred in September, October or early November let me know and send info ad photos by November 13th.
