Government ber 1990) Relations Briefing, (GCSAA Novem^ Research Committee Report More equipment recommended for research green The FGCSA Research Committee met Nov. 16 at Palm Beach National C o u n try Club. Attending: Kevin Downing, Ray Hansen, Mark Jarrell, Paul Crawford, Bill Rayside - Estech, John Foy and Chuck Gast - USGA; Monica Elliott and Marcus Prevatte - University of Florida. M a r c u s Prevatte p r e s e n t e d s o m e samples of encroachment that has started on the green. Kevin suggested that Jerry Broome should be contacted to check on the problem. It was also suggested that Chuck Gast visit the green next week when he is in the area. A discussion was held on the fertilization program that is currently being used on the green. N and K: 2 lb/mo. in winter = 1 lb/mo. starting June 1 = Total 12 lbs. 6 lbs. 18 lbs. It was decided that 18-20 pounds/ 1,000 sq. feet w o u l d meet i n d u s t r y standards. Equipment for green Kevin led a discussion on the equipm e n t that will be needed to properly maintain the green without having to rely on borrowed machines. It was decided that we should have three different hand mowers so that adjustments do not have to be made for the three different cuts that will be done. It was also decided that the following equipment should be acquired: 1 . C u s h m a n . A letter should be sent directly to the C u s h m a n h o m e office in Lincoln, Neb. regarding a utility vehicle. 2. G r o o m e r . Rather than get an attachment for the current hand mower, it was decided to purchase (or lease) a second mower with groomer attachment from Debra. 3. Verticutter. A third mower (Toro) that would include the verticutter attachment with three verticut reels would be requested. 4. Aerifier. Rather than try to purchase an aerifier, it was decided to contact an aerifier service in the early spring. Proposed research A. U of F Research: USGA Proposal (Mobility and Persistence of Turfgrass Pesticides in a USGA Green) (if approved) would be performed on the entire Northeastern section of the green (50' x 100'). This would not include the 50' x 30' leg that was not fumigated. Dr. Elliott p o i n t e d out that only diazinon has been used on this section and we must be sure that chemical usage be closely monitored. B. FGCSA Research: 1. Green Fertilizer Programs Objective: Evaluate current nitrogen sources of fertilizer for use on a putting green. The studies would be for one year a n d w o u l d be f o r n i t r o g e n s o u r c e comparison only. The P & K would be standardized. Each plot would be 6' x 10'. There would be four replications d o n e on each product. This would guarantee true evaluation rather than simply a demonstration. Cost would be $100/plot/year for a total fee of $400/ product. T h e s e w o u l d be b l i n d evaluations with initial results available after 6 m o n t h s . Findings would be published in FGCSA publications. N o endorsements will be made by FGCSA or IFAS. Evaluations would be done visually and by clipping weight. Kevin suggested that we could begin these tests as early as February but that l e t t e r s s h o u l d go o u t t o f e r t i l i z e r companies as soon as possible. 2.New Product Testing Monica suggested that this type of testing could be performed on the 30' x 50' leg on the northeast corner of the green. She also suggested that we get copies of the research being done at Clemson on Sustane and Roots and also the work being done by Dr. Vargus at Michigan before beginning any studies of our own. Some biological products that might be considered for testing are Sustane, Ringer, and Milorganite. H o r m o n a l products such as ATS and Eco-Soil might also be looked at. It was decided that we should not do any polymer research on the green. This type of research should be performed on the other plots at the Fort Lauderdale site. 3.Putting Speed Analysis Kevin would like to see some 6' x 10' plots devoted to putting speed analysis. Plots should be at 3/16 and 5/32 and should be be three categories: double cutting; groomed; alone 4.Miscellaneous Preventive programs will only work if y o u k n o w t h e p r o b l e m (disease, nematodes, insects, etc.). 328 will always have a problem when it is mowed too low. FGCSA green dedication It was suggested that the FGCSA green should be dedicated during the Fort Lauderdale Field Day set for the last Thursday in March. The Field Day will be in two parts, preferably ornamental in the m o r n i n g and turf in the afternoon. Golf Ventures has been contacted to provide a suitable plaque for the dedication. Kevin suggested that we ask Golf Ventures to list all the construction c o n t r i b u t o r s o n t h e p l a q u e with a separate area recognizing the efforts of the FGCSA and its affiliated chapters in the fundraising efforts. The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 GCSAA seminar attracts 48 to Ballenlsles at J DM The FGCSA Education Committee co-sponsored a successful GCSAA regional seminar at Ballenlsles CC of JDM Club in Palm Beach Gardens Nov. 13. Dr. Raymond Schmidgall, associate (Continues on next page) National Convention Regional seminar (from previous page) professor f r o m Michigan State University, presented a very informative and i n t e r e s t i n g e i g h t - h o u r p r o g r a m on "Budgeting and Forecasting." He stressed the use of budgets as a guideline, the different types of budgets and the process of accumulating data relevant to a good budget. The seminar was targeted for golf course superintendents and included a segment on how to present your budget to the board. The 48 attendees were presented extremely useful packages of material that could be used in setting up and maintaining a budget at their clubs. All certified s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s attending the seminar earned .7 CEU's for participating in the program. The Education Committee would like to thank those who attended the seminar as well as those who took the time to fill out a survey to decide on a topic for next year's regional seminar. GCSAA is h o n o r e d to present this award to Mr. Campbell." Campbell forged USGA/GCSAA link In his n o m i n a t i o n for the Old T o m award, Campbell also was cited for his efforts to tighten the b o n d s between the USGA and GCSAA. During his presidency, the USGA launched major fund-raising campaigns to finance the d e v e l o p m e n t of Golf House and the establishment of test facilities for clubs and balls, as well as a long-term p r o g r a m for turfgrass research, notably in the area of droughttolerant grasses. Last year's conference and show, hosted by the FGCSA in Orlando, drew more than 17,3000, including nearly 1,600 from 39 foreign countries. Attendance at the Orlando show broke the record set the year before in Anaheim, Florida Golf Council orientation briefings earning support (Guest column by Nancy Oliver, interim executive director, Florida Golf Council) Over the past several months, the Florida Golf Council has continued to gather support f r o m the various disciplines within the "$5.5 billion golf industry." Indeed, there needs to be a voice for the industry, and that's exactly what the Board of Trustees intends to develop within the halls of government: a unified voice and a foreceful presence working positively with government. As m u c h as anything, the people who govern us need to be educated. They need facts and information about what good golf courses do for the environment and about what good golf courses do for our economy, not to mention the millions of dollars raised through charitable golf t o u r n a m e n t s in Florida each year. As Board Member Ed Seay pointed out at the recent Florida Golf Summit, we must d o c u m e n t these facts, using such sources as the USGA., the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, the Society of Golf Course Architects, the National Golf Foundation, and many research programs now under way throughout the country similar to the recently completed Cape Cod Study. The owners and operators of golf courses need to be educated as well. The myriad regulatory agencies in Florida, each with its own specific schedule and agenda, are continually considering proposed legislation and promulgating laws that affect the golf industry. The Florida Golf Council intends to m o n i t o r those meetings, public workshops, and legislative sessions to thus provide an early warning system for the more than 1,000 golf courses in the state. The Florida Golf Council is n o w conducting regional orientation briefings about its overall objectives. Individuals such as Becky Sauers, Jerry Pate, Ed Seay, Bob Yount, and Cal Korf are a m o n g those who have already hosted seven of these orientations. January meetings are currently being scheduled for the cities of Fort Myers, Naples, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Vero Beach, Sebring, Ocala and Gainesville. Anyone interested in attending these meetings is encouraged to contact m e at the Florida Golf Council at (407) 6880800. ^ Florida Golf Day raises $6,000 As a n n o u n c e d in the last issue of The Green Sheet, The Florida Golf Council had hoped to raise $25,000 in seed money by asking more than a thousand golf courses in the state to earmark $1 per r o u n d on Nov. 17. The results were to be phoned in during the Nov. 20 World C u p in Orlando, a day proclaimed by the governor as "Florida Golf Day." A total of $6,000 was collected "Personally, it discouraged me," says Nancy Oliver, interim executive director and the council's spokesperson. As indicated by her column, however, Oliver has regained her optimism. FTGA continues pine tree program; more courses needed The Florida Turfgrass Association Board of Directors approved the necessary f u n d i n g to enable Dr. Roger Webb of the University of Florida to continue his pine tree decline research in 1991 and 1992. W e b b has prepared a research protocol for this expanded program which includes 14 treatment and control categories. Data is needed f r o m at least 100 treatment sites statewide. Each Florida golf course wanting to participate should select a m i n i m u m of 140 trees to be injected (10 times for (Continues on next page) Pine tree decline study (From previous page) each of the treatment and control categories). Greater numbers of trees can be selected at individual sites as long as increments of 140 trees are utilized. Studies on injection methods, rates, product packaging, product formulations and fungicide chemistry will be conducted. Each participating site must contribute $5,000 to the Florida Turfgrass Research Foundation Pine Tree Research P r o g r a m to help f u n d t h e t r a i n i n g seminars and materials, the products to be used in different calibrations and the initial treatments on site. Cost for each additional 140 trees is $3,080 or $22.50 per tree. Participation (sign-up) information will be mailed f r o m the FTGA office to all interested superintendents in the next few days. Seminars will begin in January and February with tree injections beginning in the spring of 1991. All c o n t r i b u t i o n s to the Florida Turfgrass Research Foundation, a 501C-3 organization, are tax deductible. For more information, contact Bob Yount at the FTGA office, 407-898-6721. Glen Landgraf becomes Palm Beach GCSA's 18th certified superintendent Congratulations to Glen Landgraf who is the most recent FGCSA m e m b e r to become a Certified Golf Course Superintendent. Glen has been employed by Camino Del Mar, a privately owned 18 hole golf club in south Boca Raton, for the past nine years. He began as Assistant Superintendent in 1981 and was p r o m o t e d to his current position as Superintendent in August 1984. Glen passed the challenging GCSAA Certification Test in September and advises anyone planning to take the test to give themselves a m o n t h or so to prepare for it. He feels extra concentration should be given to the Financial Management and Organizational Management sections. Glen decided to take the time to study for the test because of his desire to keep up with the current trends in the golf industry while striving for personal advancement in his field. He is also continuing to work on his degree in Ornamental Horticulture at Palm Beach C o m m u n i t y College. W h e n he is not studying, Glen enjoys playing golf and carries a 4 or 5 handicap. H e and the professional f r o m C a m i n o Del Mar won the PGA Pro/ Superintendent Tournament at Windstar CC in Naples in 1989. Glen is married and has two young daughters. Glen has been a m e m b e r of the Palm Beach chapter for m a n y years.
