Tit y esc* Qreen £heet ^^ ^"fS/NTENO^ Volume I, Part III, March - April FLORIDA GOLF DAY Saturday, April 2 0 , 1 9 8 5 Again in 1985 the Florida Golf Course Superintendent's Association in conjunction with Governor Bob Graham will be sponsoring the second annual Florida Golf Day. This event was implemented in 1984 to encourage golfer participation in the funding of various turfgrass research projects and junior golf programs. The continued improvement of quality turfgrass that are utilized for golf courses is greatly enhanced by the continued efforts of researchers throughout Florida. The very simple fact that these programs need supplemental funding is how the concept of Florida Golf Day originated. The people that benefit the most from these improvements are the golfers that spend a great deal of time taking divots from the fairways or rolling the putts over smooth greens. Florida Golf Day gives the golfer from either private country clubs or the daily fee operation a chance to financially contribute to these turfgrass programs. Golf course superintendents and club professionals are being asked to use their ingenuity to create a format for golf tournaments or events that can assist in raising these needed funds. In 1984 golf courses were able to raise approximately sixteen thousand dollars to assist the University of Florida in Bermudagrass Decline research and mole cricket updates. This year on April 20, 1985 we expect a great deal more involvement from our concerned golf clubs and superintendents throughout the state of Florida. Many clubs last year conducted closest to the pin contests on Florida Golf Day and we will again encourage these efforts. Kevin Downing from Mariner Sands Country Club will be the tournament chairman and can be contacted at 305-283-7500, extension 210 for further information. proclamation State of Florida Executive Department Tallahassee W H E R E A S , the S u n s h i n e S t a t e e n j o y s a c l i m a t e w i t h m a n y o u t d o o r s p o r t s a c t i v i t i e s ; and compatible W H E R E A S , the b e a u t y of F l o r i d a ' s golf c o u r s e s is a g r e a t a s s e t to the c o n t i n u e d s u c c e s s of t o u r i s m and r e l a t e d d e v e l o p m e n t in o u r S t a t e ; and most W H E R E A S , F l o r i d a is a s h o w c a s e for some of our b e a u t i f u l and c h a l l e n g i n g golf c o u r s e s ; and country's W H E R E A S , the F l o r i d a Golf C o u r s e S u p e r i n t e n d e n t ' s A s s o c i a t i o n , r e p r e s e n t i n g o v e r 415 i n d i v i d u a l s w h o are i n v o l v e d w i t h the m a n a g e m e n t of F l o r i d a ' s golf c o u r s e s , is r e s p o n s i b l e for e d u c a t i n g its m e m b e r s in all a s p e c t s of golf c o u r s e c o n d i t i o n i n g and m a n a g e m e n t ; N O W , T H E R E F O R E , I, Bob G r a h a m , by v i r t u e of the v e s t e d in m e as G o v e r n o r of the S t a t e of F l o r i d a , do p r o c l a i m A p r i l 20, 1 9 8 5 , as GOLF authority hereby DAY in F l o r i d a and e n c o u r a g e all c i t i z e n s to take a d v a n t a g e not o n l y of o u r b e a u t i f u l c l i m a t e , but a l s o the o p p o r t u n i t y for c o m p e t i t i v e sports activities. GOVERNOR ATTEST : The FGCSA Delegate View of 1985 GCSAA Election The original concept of organizing the FGCSA was to consolidate the votes held by 9 Chapters into one Florida Block. Although the concept has adapted other more far reaching goals, the fruits of our labor in the past was very evident this year at the GCSAA conference. The Florida GCSA carried 252 votes, which is by far the largest voting Chapter in America. The Florida GCSA delegate job is to personally interview and seek out information concerning each candidate running for national joffice and to review other topics that will require a membership vote at the GCSAA annual meeting. After gathering as much information as possible about each candidate and topics, the delegate organizes a presentation to be given at the Florida GCSA Board of Director caucus that is usually held about 1 hour before the election. The candidates are then chosen by a majority vote of those board members present. The delegate then votes for the candidates that the Florida GCSA Board felt were the best people for the job. The gathering of information and interviews with the candidate took place in the candidates state suites, on the show room floor and in discussing views with people I have met over the years. It is amazing how much attention you receive by carrying 252 votes. The election for president this year (as in years past) was run by one candidate unopposed. Eugene D. Baston, CGCS from Alabama, is the 1985 GCSAA President. Mr. Baston spent some time as a golf course superintendent in Florida back in the 60's. He will be an excellent president. The Vice Presidential election was between two very qualified candidates. Riley L. Stottern CGCS from Utah and the present Sec./Treas. of GCSAA Donald E. Hearn, CGCS from Massachusetts whom is currently on the Board of Directors. This was a difficult choice. Both men have done an outstanding job for GCSAA and will make good future presidents. The Florida GCSA knew Mr. Hearn better than Mr. Stottern because of our members involvement with his committees in GCSAA. Riley Stottern was elected by a vote of 2123 to 1197. The election for director consisted of a very class group of individuals for candidates. Our association would have been in good hands no matter who was elected. Since Donald Hearn was defeated in the Vice President election he was nominated from the floor to run for Director. Steven Candenelli from Connecticut was also nominated from the floor to run for Director. This brought the number of candidates to 6 with 3 to be elected and 1 to be appointed to fill Riley Stottern's position on the Board. The Florida GCSA felt the best candidates for the job were Donald Hearn, CGCS, Mr. Dennis Lyons CGCS, Colorado, and Mr. Gerald L. Faubel CGCS, Michigan. The GCSAA membership body elected Mr. Hearn, Mr. Lyon and Mr. John Segui CGCS, Pennyslvania. President Baston then appointed Mr. Faubel to fill Mr. Stottern's spot on the Board. The newly proposed Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws were voted down by a two-thirds majority. The main concern of members on the new proposal was the changing of the name to Golf Course Superintendents Association, basically removing of America. I feel extremely confident with the new Officers and Board of Directors and look for good things to happen in the CGSAA Future. Sincerely, Don Delaney Florida Turf-Grass Association Tom Burrows, President Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association Turtle Creek Club Tequesta, FL 33458 Dear Tom: Anticipating an increased work load as we attempt to improve an already highly successful Turf Conference and Trade Show, the FT-GA Board has seen fit to make a slight change in responsibilities — changes dictated not by failure in the past but rather by a desire to involve more qualified persons and, in turn, have those individuals concentrate their efforts on specific portions of the total program. Each segment is critical and of equal importance in our desire to reach our ultimate goal of being recognized as the best regional Turf Conference and Trade Show — not only recognized as the biggest but as the one that offers the most to its members and attendees. With that in mind, I wish to inform you of the command structure of the Conference and Show and to solicit an immediate effort on your part to supply committee chairmen with your ideas and needs. I will be General Chairman of the Conference and Show. Dr. Ed Freeman will chair the Conference Committee. Ed will have three sub-comittees under him — Mr. Ralph White will chair the General Sessions Committee; Dr. Bruce Augustin will chair the Concurrent Educational Sessions Committee; and Dr. Charles Peacock will chair the Workshop Sessions Committee. Along with Ed, Mr. Gerry Millholen will chair an Events Committee and Mr. Michael McLaughlin will chair the Show Committee. Gerry's committee will handle the golf Tournament, social events, entertainment, annual meeting, etc. Mike's committee is self-explanatory. I would hope that the superintendents will have requests and suggestions to make to the three conference sub-committees. Consider the fact that we want these sessions to cover a wide range of subjects and to be of interest and value to the beginner as well as the qualified experienced veteran. Charles Peacock's committee will handle a new segment of our Conference-Educational workshops during Show time. These sessions will be by advanced registration and will be limited to a maximum of 30 and will be repeated. The hours will be such that an attendee can first visit the show, go to the workshop, and then again have time for more show. Of course time is of the essence. The first Florida Cooperative meeting of the Committee chairmen will be Extension Service held January 18, 1985. Although this will be a program structural meeting; I hope each University of Florida Institute of committee will have met and developed some Food and Agricultural Sciences basic program content. 2-4-D AND PHENOXY HERBICIDES — The Florida Dept. of AgriculMy desire is to put together a Conference ture and Consumer Services has new and Show which can be aggressively regulations on the use of 2-4-D and other marketed in Spring and early Summer. phenoxy herbicides. Jerry W. Reddem, CGCS, golf course superintendent at the Imperial Golf Club, Naples, Florida, received the Leo Feser Award for 1984 from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). Redden was selected for this award over 24 other golf course superintendents from around the country who had also written for the Association's magazine. His article, "Bulkheads Can Be Beautiful," was published in Golf Course Management magazine, April 1984. The Leo Feser Award is presented to a golf course superintendent and GCSAA member who has, in the past year, authored the article in Golf Course Management magazine that the GCSAA Communications/Awards Committee judges to have been the most outstanding superintendentwritten article. The award, which has been awarded on an annual basis since 1977, recognizes not just the author's literary efforts, but his or her contribution to higher levels of professionalism and the welfare of fellow superintendents. When notified of his selection as the recipient of the Leo Feser Award, Redden reacted with, "Last year at the GCSAA Conference in Las Vegas, when I talked with the magazine staff about writing an article, I never dreamed that I would receive such a high honor for my writing. This might inspire other superintendents, who are thinking about writing for the magazine, to talk with the GCM staff at Conference to obtain a few pointers. Who knows? They just might be the winner next year!" This was Redden's first attempt at writing for a magazine. Sand Bagger Wins Again Joe Johnson (E. R. Jahna Sand), led his Scramble Team to victory in the January South Florida Superintendent's meeting at Miami Springs C.C. On the first hole he sank a parsaving 10 footer. On the next hole Joe holed a wedge shot for an eagle. He followed up with four birdie putts from 35 - 50 feet. And, then he played a knock-down, pitch-and-run shot from behind, under a tree, to a severely elevated green, four feet from the hole, for another birdie! Joe is available for Scramble Tournaments with his 20 handicap as your "D" player . . . how about as the "A" man??? Please send all responses to: Mike Bailey, Communications Committee Chairman, 19642 Trophy Drive, Boca Raton, FL 33434. On The Road To Recovery: Mr. Tom Burrows is enthusiastic to report that his son, Scott, appears to be on the road of recovering from a most severe automobile accident. It was feared Scott might be paralyzed from the neck down for life. After being at the Craig Institute in Denver for the past two months, a hospital specializing in spinal cord recovery, it appears that Scott will probably receive most of his mobility back and perhaps only have a slight limp when walking. This case is such a rarity as Tom states 4 'Usually only 1 out of 300 who are admitted to the Institute are fortunate enough to walk again/' The next time you see Tom, you'll know why he's sporting such a big smile! FLORIDA GOLF DAY IDEAS Saturday, April 2 0 , 1 9 8 5 One of the most successful methods of participation from the membership would be to conduct a closest to the pin contest. Last year various clubs displayed numerous pieces of turf equipment, turf pests, fertilizer products or publications that demonstrated the complexity of our business. With this material visible to the members it will help convince them to donate to the project. A poster advertising 4'Florida Golf Day" is now being printed and will be distributed to clubs through either the President or external Vice-President of your local chapter by March 15, 1985. This informative poster will help advertise to your membership or golfers and should help stimulate their knowledge of your event. Please take time to work out the details with the golf professional and make this a successful program. A question that always seems to arise is: "We like the concept but can't hold the tournament that day, is it possible to run it at another time?" The answer is definitely, YES. The purpose of the day is to create a general awareness of the golf course management business and help raise funds for turfgrass research from the direct benefactors which are the golfers. Feel free to conduct your event any day that is convenient for your club. All funds should be sent to: Kevin Downing C.G.C.S., Golf Course Manager, 6500 Mariner Sands Drive, Stuart, Florida 33497. These funds will be compiled and then turned over to the Florida G.C.S.A. Board. Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association 1985 Winter Meeting J.W. Marriott Hotel Washington, D.C. NEXT MEETING: POA ANNUA CLASSIC Ornamental Horticulture Program The University of Florida, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, and Broward Community College are offering courses for interested people in horticulture and turfgrasses. The program is intended to allow students who hold an AA degree to complete a baccalaureate degree in Ornamental Horticulture. The horticulture courses are also available to students majoring in other areas of science who would like to include these as electives. A second phase of the program will provide in-depth extension programs for problems concerning nurserymen, turfgrass managers, landscape technicians and such. This training will consist of workshops, short courses and training programs but will not earn credits toward an academic degree. For those turf managers who have interested individuals the second phase of the program will probably be of the most benefit since they do not require as much time and it is geared more to the working professional. The courses available for academic credit will be mostly for those students who are going for a degree. If anyone has any questions about the programs, call the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center: (305) 475-8990. GCSAA 56th International Conference The Equipment Show Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies opened the way for vendors to display many new products. Tom Burrows accepts the Distinguished Service Award on behalf of the Jimmy Blackledge family. Jimmy died in 1982 after a lifelong commitment to leadership in the turf grass industry. Opening Ceremonies set the tone for a feeling of utmost professionalism within our industry. Lecture Rooms were filled to the max with intent listeners taking home more knowledge.
