President's Message by Paul Crawford We have one of our biggest gatherings of the year coming up on May 13, 14, and 15 in Naples. Activities begin with an educational seminar on Friday afternoon and the FGCSA board meeting in the evening. Saturday is the Granny Horn Tournament followed by the banquet with Sunday being the day for the Poa Annua Tournament. Definitely a weekend full of education, camaraderie and, of course, a little golf. Anyone who has not attended this event at the Naples Beach Club should consider coming. The Everglades chapter does an outstanding job. It is important to know that you do not have to play golf to attend the other events. You can pick and chose what you would like to do. There is also Paul Crawford plenty for the family to do while you are busy with the sponsored activities. We also have a full weekend the first of August when the Central Florida chapter hosts the Crowfoot Open. Both of these events are great opportunities to get to know the other superintendents in the state. I encourage everyone of you to try to make it to one of these weekends (or both). You will be happy you did. If you need any GREEN S H E E T Editor: Tom Benefield, CGCS P O Box 1783 Hobe Sound, FL 33475 (407) 546-8033. News Coordinator: Mrs. Marie Roberts 1760 N.W. This money comes from the rebate programs sponsored by some of our suppliers throughout the state. Any companies considering this should contact our office. We would be happy to sit down with you and discuss a program. Once again, guys, don't forget to support the people who are supporting us. It's one big cycle and it is up to us to keep this going. Thank you to the people who have helped out and sent in articles to the Florida Green. We will accept full length articles but most important are the 2-3 paragraph segments that are grouped together with a central theme in each issue. We will be sending out Florida Green staff writer golf shirts to those superintendents who supply these for us. These particular articles have been very popular with the golf superintendents and we need your help to keep it going. So when Tom or Marie call you, help us out and send in your part. See you at one of the summer events. REMEMBER: Next FGCSA Board Meeting is scheduled for Friday night, May 13th, at the Naples Beach Hotel. All FGCSA members are invited. Seven Rivers Golf Course Superintendents Association hosted this event which grossed $44,000 according to Glenn Oberlander, Tournament Chairman. The approximate net income will be close to $30,000 and will be donated directly to the Envirotron Equipment Fund. The Seven Rivers chapter can be proud of this tremendous accomplishment. The Envirotron Golf Class would like to thank all sponsors and participants who graciously donated their time and money. A special thanks goes to the Ace Sponsors who donated $2,500 each to the event: Helena/Vigoro; Pro Equipment; Tresca/Jacobsen; and LESCO. Again this year, World Woods Golf Club General Manager Stan Cooke donated their courses which were in immaculate condition thanks to superintendents Steve Hritsko and Bob Wagner. Golf results were as follows. Low Net winner of the traveling trophy was the team sponsored by Glen Lakes G&CC consisting of Dave Craighead, Andy Padova, Rick Sadler, and Ralph Glover playing on the Pine Barrens course. The 4 4-man scramble Low Gross team winners were Mike Cook, Steve Anderson, Mike Anderson, and Glen Gabriel. Meanwhile on the Rolling Oaks GC, the Low Net winner with a 62 was Mack Baugh while Pat Fitzpatrick captured Low Gross honors with a 73. In addition to the golf, lobbyist Mike Goldie gave an update and fair warning about the upcoming battle over water use that will be waged here in Florida. The program also included an update by Dr. Bert McCarty who invited everyone to vist the new Envirotron and see some of the studies already underway. The Awards ceremony was preceded by a Bar-B-Que dinner of chicken and ribs while the scores were being tabulated. The FGCSA would like to add their congratulations to the Seven Rivers chapter members who donated a considerable amount of time to pull off this major event. Everyone involved can be truly proud of what was accomplished. Mike Goldie talks to the group while Glenn Oberlander, Tournament Chairman, rushes off to attend to more details. The Green Sheet Envirotron Golf Classic $30,000 Raised for Envirotron Equipment Fund Entrance to beautiful World Woods Golf Club, host of two successful Envirotron Tournaments Low Net Winners from Glen Lakes G&CC were Dave Craighead, Andy Padova, Rick Sadler, and Ralph Glover. May /June 1994 5 FGCSA Chapter Activities CHAPTERS EARN RESEARCH DOLLARS AT TELEVISED EVENTS It all began back in late January of 1991 when the Palm Beach chapter was asked to help ESPN with the LPGA event at Wycliffe CC in Lake Worth. They did such a good job for ESPN that they were contacted by NBC to cover the PGA Championship in April of that same year. And then the ball started to roll! During the past three months, three of our local chapters have acted as spotters or scorers for NBC and CBS for tour events throughout the state. This is fast becoming a major fund raising coup for turfgrass research! The networks must provide their own communications personnel and this is where the local superintendents come in. The networks appreciate the fact that superintendents are "quality volunteers" who know the game and the golf course. The Central Florida chapter has worked the Bay Hill tournament for the past four years and this year added the LPGA event at Grand Cypress to their schedule. They have also been asked to work for CBS during the upcoming LPGA Spring Championship. The chapter uses a crew of approximately 16 - 20 volunteers to get the job done. The North Florida chapter received $2,500 for helping NBC during the TPC at Sawgrass last month. It must be noted that NBC requires their volunteers to walk with the group, as opposed to CBS which prefers that the volunteers be stationed at each hole throughout the course. So you can see that volunteering for an NBC tournament is indeed hard work. In April, the Palm Beach chapter earned another $2,600 by working the PGA Seniors Championship at PGA National. This chapter also uses a core of 16 - 20 volunteers and there is always a list of superintendents waiting to get on the list! When you realize that the team of volunteers must commit to work all four days of the tournament, you begin to see what a large personal commitment it is for a busy superintendent to make. Palm Beach chapter members Paul Crawford, Danny Miller, Dale Mitchell, Brent Hawk and Andy Lemmel relax in front of the NBC trailer. The FGCSA salutes the Central Florida, North Florida and Palm Beach chapters for their dedication to the sport. They have earned a reputation of being savvy, knowledgeable spotters during the coverage of these tournaments and have opened up a new source of revenue for other chapters to use. We hope all chapters will respond positively when contacted to work a tournament in their area. And it is a lot of fun! 6 The Green Sheet FGCSA Membership News JOB CHANGES Newly Certified Superintendent JohnBautc is leaving Breakers West GC to begin construction of the Royal Westmoreland GC in St. James, Barbados Scott Hamm, our latest FGCSA certified superintendent, has been working in the golf course industry since the age of seven when his father built Turkey Run Golf Club in Waveland, Indiana.
