While Orlando is still the number one location for the conference, Las Vegas was no small affair. There were a lot of excellent seminars offered in Las Vegas and the trade show has to be seen to be believed. I find every year that the most educational aspect of the conference is seeing golf courses in other regions of the country and talking with superintendents from around the world. It is amazing what you can learn and the ideas that can be gained from this type of interaction. If you were not able to attend the show this year I highly recommend attending next year's conference. It was good to see so many people from Florida at the show. Our annual reception was an overwhelming success again this year. We had approximately 500 people attend our party. I would like to thank Paul Crawford for organizing another great event — keep up the good work, Paul! One of the main functions I performed at this year's conference was to represent Florida at the GCS AA annual meeting. In the last Green Sheet I expressed my opinion on the bylaw issues that were going to be voted on at the annual meeting in Las Vegas. No surprises occurred at this year's annual meeting. All the by law initiatives passed except for the new C classification. I was happy to see that I was not the only one who thought this was a goofy idea, hopefully it was put to rest once and for all. In the election of officers Paul McGinnis, CGCS, was elected President, George Renault III, CGCS was elected Vice President and David Fearis, CGCS was elected Secretary/Treasurer. The following were elected as directors: Tommy Witt, CGCS, Michael Wallace, CGCS, and Samuel Snyder VII, CGCS. Now that the GCSAA conference is behind us it is time to look forward to the summer. The FGCSSA survey results should be in your hands or will soon be there by the time you read this. I want to thank Paul Illgen for the hard work he devoted to this year's survey. Our public relations video should be coming out in the not too distant future. Hopefully it will be ready by the time the Poa GREEN SHEE1 Editor: Greg A. At our last board meeting, the idea was brought up to look into the feasibility of starting an FGCSA web page on the Internet. At the very least we want to set up an e-mail account for Marie to help make correspondence easier. If you have any thoughts about this, please contact your chapter's external vice president or me and share them with us. I hope that this year's season has been a good one for you and with any luck may we have good weather throughout the summer. NOTE: The next FGCSA Board Meeting will be held on Friday morning, May 16,1997, at the Naples Beach Hotel This will be the weekend for the Everglades chapter to host this year's Poa Annua Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 17th and the G. C. Horn Tournament on Sunday, May 18th. Make your plans now to attend this popular family affair. The Green Sheet Local Golf Course Superintendent Chapters Plan Major Fundraisers in March and April Fifth Annual Envirotron Tenth Annual SFGCSA Turfgrass Exposition Golf Classic The Fifth Annual Envirotron Golf Classic will be held on Monday, April 21 st at the World Woods Golf Club in Brooksville. The field is limited to 144 players on the Pine Barrens and Rolling Oaks courses. Registration begins at 8:30 with a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start for the 4 person Handicap Scramble event. This tournament has generated more funds for the University of Florida Envirotron research equipment than any other fundraiser thanks to the generosity of the World Woods ownership and the hard work of the Seven Rivers chapter members. Last year's Envirotron Golf Classic raised $45,000 with overall research contributions totaling $132,500. The tournament fills up early so if you have not already sent in your registration form or your sponsorship application, please call Glenn Oberlander of the Seven Rivers GCSA at 352-795-7017 today. 14th Annual Suncoast Scramble The Suncoast GCSA will sponsor their 14th Annual Suncoast Scramble on Tuesday, March 18th at Misty Creek Golf Club in Sarasota. Tom Crawford will be the host superintendent at Misty Creek. Proceeds from past tournaments have now totaled over $70,000 which have been distributed to turf research, turf student scholarships and the Sarasota and Manatee Junior Golf programs. Suncoast Scramble teams consist of golf professional, club manager and golf course superintendent from area clubs who team up with a Suncoast chapter supplier. Anyone who is interested in playing in the tournament or making a contribution as a sponsor should contact Tom Hilferty at Tatum Ridge Golf Links. March/April 1997 The South Florida GCSA will be hosting their Turfgrass Exposition on Thursday, March 13th, in conjunction with the University of Florida Turfgrass and Landscape Ornamentals Field Day in Fort Lauderdale. This popular event is the major fundraiser for the upkeep and maintenance of the FGCSA research green and turf plots at the Fort Lauderdale site. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with the equipment demonstration beginning at 8:00 a.m. This year's equipment demonstrators include Kilpatrick Turf, Hector Turf, Florida Coast Equipment and Pifer, Inc. Immediately following the equipment demonstrations, the crowd will move to the suppliers display area where 30 turfgrass suppliers will have the latest information on pumps, fertilizers and pesticides on hand in their booths. After lunch, the turfgrass field day and landscape ornamentals seminars will provide more education to participants who will earn CEUs for the days activities. The South Florida chapter is expecting a large crowd this year and invites any superintendent who has not attended in the past to make this the year to come see the green that your research dollars are supporting. 6th Annual Ridge Invitational The Sixth Annual Ridge Invitational Golf Tournament will be held on Monday March 3rd at the Grasslands G&CC in Lakeland. This tournament offers a Chapter Challenge to all other FGCSA chapters to take on the mighty Ridge golfers! This is your opportunity to have fun playing a great golf course while helping your peers raise money for turfgrass research. Last minute entrants should call Roy Wilshire, Ridge chapter president, at 941-688-3863 THE Activities Planned for March and April The USGA will be hosting their annual USGA Regional Conferences on Monday, April 14th at the Orlando Airport Marriott and on Thursday, April 17th at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott. The all day seminars begin with a 7:30 registration and adjourn at 4:00 p.m. and offer CEU's for Certified Superintendents, club pros, club managers and Restricted Pesticide License holders. Featured speakers include USGA Agronomist Chris Hartwiger who will explain the ten myths of turfgrass management; John Ribes who will speak on Creating a Master Landscape Plan for Golf Courses; Dr. Charles Peacock from North Carolina State University will speak on Protecting Natural Resources on the Golf Course with Best Management Practices; and representatives from Indian River Club in Vero Beach will discuss their cooperative effort with the Audubon program. The afternoon program includes Dr. Ronnie Duncan, UGA Experiment Station in Griffin will speak on Paspalum's: The Right Choice for the Environment; Dr. Wayne Hanna will discuss new high quality Bermudagrasses; Dr. Monica Elliott will give an update on Bermudagrass Research in Florida; and Dr. Earl Eisner will discuss purchasing genetically pure turfgrasses which will be followed by a discussion on producing certified turfgrasses in Florida. As you can see, the USGA has put together a new and exciting program this year and all superintendents are urged to make an effort to attend the seminar in your area. This seminar is offered for your convenience each year and it is your responsibility as an informed superintendent to make an extra effort to attend or send another representative from your club to bring back this valuable information to your crew members. 3 FGCS A Winter Board Meeting Minutes The Winter 1997 meeting of the FGCS A Board of Directors was called to order by President Dale Kuehner, CGCS, at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24th, at Bay Hill Club in Orlando. All officers except Greg Plotner, Past President, were in attendance. North Florida, Ridge and West Coast chapters were not represented. Other FGCSA members attending the meeting were Past President Mark Jarrell, Committee Chairman Steve Pearson, Florida Green editor Joel Jackson, and Committee Chairman Mike Mongoven. Valent U.S.A. donates $10,125 to Research President Dale Kuehner introduced Peter Blum of Valent, USA who made a presentation of the proceeds from the 1996 Valent Right Course Program to the FGCSA Research Fund. He presented a $ 10,125 check which represents 50% of the rebate; the same amount was donated to the FTG A from the proceeds. Minutes of the Fall 1996 FGCSA Board Meeting were approved. Michael Perham reviewed the current financial statements for all FGCSA accounts. He discussed the advertising income on the Membership Directory, keeping the reception under budget, the shortfall in dues income, and asked for a progress report on the video. Darren Davis reported that the video should be done by the Poa and we should receive a final invoice from Epic before the end of the fiscal year. Mike also discussed the need to update our Job Description file. Descriptions are needed for the Publication, Education, Membership, Research, Public Relations and Long Range Planning Committee Chairmenship positions. Current committee chairmen were asked to submit a Job Description by the May board meeting. GCSAA AFFILIATION/CHAPTER INCORPORATION: All chapters have filed their Florida Incorporation papers. All chapters except Coastal Plains, South Florida and Treasure Coast have signed the Florida GCSA agreement. Five local Florida chapters have completed the requirements to be recognized as GCSAA Affiliated Chapters. All other chapters are on a 3 month probationary status and were urged to get their paperwork in if they choose to be a GCSAA affiliated chapter. PUBLICATIONS: JoelJackson reported that the Winter '97 issue will be available at the Las Vegas Convention. He and Larry are communicating with more e-mail and downloading directly to each other's computers. The covers for the next two issues have already been shot. Joel is, again, looking for more input into the Hands On section. Marie Roberts reported that the 1997 FGCSA Membership Directory has been mailed to all members and to advertisers. This year's profit on the directory is -$11,000. EDUCATION: Darren Davis reported that he is willing to help coordinate the GCSAA Regional Seminars for Florida this year so that there are no conflicts. Palm Beach would like to hold a seminar in early August and the FTG A is planning to sponsor one at their convention in September. At this time these are the only Regional Seminars planned for 1997. Other chapters should check with Darren before making any final decision on their topics and dates for Regional Seminars. The GCSAA needs to be contacted well in advance of your planned dates. POA: Darren announced that the Poa weekend is scheduled for May 16,17,18 at the Naples Beach Club. The FGCSA board meeting will be held on Friday morning. Darren has a seminar planned for Friday afternoon. Saturday is the Poa tournament followed by the banquet on Sunday evening. The G. C. Horn Tournament will be played on Sunday. MEMBERSHIP: Chapter figures were distributed. This is the time for all local chapters to hold membership drives to get those superintendents who work at small clubs and are not members of the GCSAA. If they become members of a local chapter before July 1 they will not have to join the GCSAA. All Class A and B superintendents who apply for membership after July 1st must also be a member of the GCSAA in order to be eligible to be a Class A member. It was suggested that this notice be put in the March/April issue of the Green Sheet. GOLF: Joe Ondo reported that the Interlachen tournament was a financial success with over $4,000 being donated to the FTGA for turfgrass research. Interlachen donated the golf and the Central Florida chapter paid for the food so that all funds raised go to research. Joe stated that several Florida superintendents have registered to play in the GCSAA Golf Tournament so he hopes to have at least 3 Florida teams. The FTGA will continue to hold a scramble format for their tournament so Joe is again planning an FGCSA Team Tournament at Southern Dunes to use as a qualifier for next year's GCS AA Florida Team. The format at Southern Dunes will be 5 man chapter teams with best 4 out of 5 scores counting toward chapter championship. FTGA: The 1997 FTGA Conference and Show will be held September 5th through the 8th with plans for a GCSAA Regional Seminar on Thursday, September 4th, Friday golf followed by Com Boil at Simmons Ranch, and the Show on Saturday and Sunday. The FTGA has cancelled their present contract with Mac Vicar. The FTGA Board was unhappy that the firm was not aware of a water situation in Sarasota County or, if they were aware, they had not alerted anyone to the problem that existed. The FTGA may consider rewriting the contract with more specific responsibilities. FGCSA Winter Board Meeting Minutes GOVERNMENT RELATIONS: Joe Ondo, Tim Hiers and Kevin Downing attended another Golf Summit meeting at Grenelefe which was not well attended. Report on the meeting should be coming from Roy Bates or the FTG A office. A comprehensive review of the UF turfgrass program will be held in Gainesville on February 19-21. Paul Ilgen reported that members of the Seven Rivers chapter will attend to represent the FGCSA. Paul Ilgen then distributed a copy of the St. Pete Times which had a headline criticizing golf courses re. water study and runoff problems. A discussion was held regarding the SWFWMD and how best to handle the situation. Paul will try to head off any more of this bad publicity. Mike Mongoven discussed the water quality study that is being conducted on five Dade County golf courses. Each golf course will have 3 shallow well sites, one near the mix/load stations. The question is, what are they looking for? Mike will continue to monitor this program. FUND RAISING: Mark Jarrell reported that in addition to the funds received by Valent, other companies are continuing to look at rebate programs. CIB A has discontinued their nationwide program. Mark discussed the new program at Milton and the help that Jeff Ball is giving in that part of the state. Mark feels the best avenue for fund rasing continues to be to work through our legislators to get more money funded for turfgrass. PUBLIC RELATIONS: Darren Davis reported that the video script has been reviewed by ten superintendents, changes have been made and is now back in the hands of EPIC. Final review of the tape will be done by a PR firm before the tape is approved. Darren expects it to be mailed in early summer and should be completed by the end of our fiscal year. GCSAA: Dale Kuehner, Voting Delegate, announced the slate of officers for the GCSAA election. After some discussion it was decided that the FGCSA would support Dave Fearis for Secretary/Treasurer with Tommy Witt, Michael Wallace and Sam Snyder for Directors. Any chapter that is opposed to this slate should call Dale by the end of next week. Chapters who were not in attendance at today's board meeting will be contacted by fax. Proposed by-law amendments were discussed with pros and cons presented for the dues increase and the new proposed Class C-V. Some chapters were against both of these amendments and Dale will do his best to vote according to the wishes of the majority. SURVEY: To date we have received about 300 completed surveys. Replies can be accepted and tabulated through the middle of February. Survey results will be mailed to all Class A and B members sometime before the end of March. 1996 FGCSA Wage & Maintenance Survey Results ready in March CHAPTER NEWS: The Envirotron Tournament will be held at World Woods on April 21st. The field will be limited to the first 144 players. Last year, Seven Rivers chapter had to turn away about 60 golfers so everyone is urged to get their entry in as soon as possible. The Treasure Coast chapter is planning their Blue Pearl Tournament on May 10th. This tournament has raised over $20,000 in past years with most of the proceeds going to Audubon school programs. Everglades chapter is planning their Spring Seminar for April 25th with proceeds going to support Audubon school programs. Contact these chapters for reservation information NEW BUSINESS: The Florida chapter is one of 12 to undergo training on new computer software for GCSAA chapters. The training will be held in May or June and the chapter is responsible for the airfare only. The FGCSA will purchase a new computer system that will be capable of running the new program. $2,000 was earmarked for this equipment at the Fall 1996 board meeting but it was felt that we may need to increase this figure at the Poa board meeting after some research on prices has been done. In a related issue, Darren Davis suggested that we get prices on a Web site for the FGCSA. He also suggested that we reserve our call letters at this time. A motion was made by Mike Perham that we gather information on a Web site for the FGCSA. The motion was approved. Darren Davis, Mike Perham and Steve Pearson will follow up on this and present their findings at the next board meeting. Mark Jarrell discussed the Rohm and Haas Eagle Rewards rebate program which offers GCSAA merchandise to superintendents who buy their products. Mark is not in favor of this type of program and would like input from others on their feelings about this practice. A request from John Piersol of LCCC for assistance in promoting their mechanics program was discussed. There was not much enthusiasm for pursuing this but each chapter was urged to find one person in their chapter who could be a contact for LCCC. Mike Perham discussed financial concerns re. future dues increase for the FGCSA, expensing overhead items to the Florida Green to bring down our "paper profit" and other Florida Green advertising options. Dale announced that the next FGCSA board meeting will be held on Friday morning, May 16th at the Naples Beach Club. Meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m. Everglades Chapter to Sponsor Spring Seminar The Everglades GCSA will sponsor their annual Spring Seminar on Friday, April 25th at La Playa in Vanderbilt Beach. This year's featured speakers include Dr. Jeff Krans from Mississippi State, Dr. Joe Vargas from Michigan State who is the 1997 GCS AA Distinguished Service Award winner, John Piersol of Lake City Community College, Brian Scully the local IFAS Extension Agent, John Foy of the USGA, and Ken Mangum, GCSAA Board of Director from Atlanta. The all day seminar begins with registration at 8:00 a.m. and offers CEU's for Certified Superintendents and also for Florida Pesticide License credits. For directions and registration information, please call Jerry Bel yea, EGCS A Education Chairman, at 941-283-3989. Treasure Coast Chapter Hosts 4th Annual Blue Pearl Tournament The Treasure Coast GCSA will host the Fourth Annual Blue Pearl Charity Tournament on Saturday, May 10th, at Loblolly Pines CC in Hobe Sound. This year's tournament will again benefit the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Schools. Last year's tournament raised over $10,000. Treasure Coast schools have been sponsored by the TCGCSA and adopted by local golf course superintendents. Funds have been used for library books, native plant gardens, a nature trail, wetland creation and other environmental learning materials. Local superintendents work as an expert resource for the schools and facilitate grant requests. Anyone who would like information about the Blue Pearl can contact Bill Lanthier at 561-283-3644. 6 New FGCSA Members Thomas DeChant, Class A, Hunt- ers Green CC, Tampa Kevin Wilkes, Class B, Bardmoor North St. Petersburg. Past President Dick Blake Honored During Las Vegas Convention In commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the GCSAA's Certification Program, 15 members of the GCSAA were recognized for 25 years of excellence in the GCSAA Certification program during the GCSAA Conference in Las Vegas. The certification program was established in 1971 with an inaugural class of 47 superintendents. Of the original 47 superintendents, four have maintained their CGCS status by completing the CGCS renewal requirments five times and 11 are CGCS Retired. The Florida GCSA is proud to recognize Dick Blake as one of these 15 who were honored on February 10th. Besides his distinction as one of the inaugural Certified Golf Course Superintendents, Dick has shown his devotion and intense sense of responsibility to the turfgrass profession by serving as a GCSAA board member and working through the chairs to serve as President of the GCSAA in 1971. After moving to Florida, Dick accepted a position on the FGCSA Board of Directors culminating in his term as President of the FGCSA in 1987-88. This is a feat that will probably never be repeated by anyone. Congratulations and thank you, Dick! Dick remains an active member of the Palm BeachGCSA and is always ready to serve the FGCSA Board of Directors. The Florida GCSA is also proud of all of our more than 100 active Certified Golf Course Superintendents.
