I would like everyone who has seen the FGCSA promo tape, "Golf is Good for the Environment and You", to give Darren Davis a call and tell him what a great job he did. This tape presents a look at the benefits that golf courses provide to people and the environment. We all know the good things that golf courses do, but Darren can give you some ideas on how to get the word out to people who don't know or think otherwise. Please call Marie Roberts if you have not received the tape. I just viewed GCS AA's new tape, "Assuring Golf's Value". It is an excellent tape on why golfers play this game and how our role as golf course superintendents is responsible for this. Please give GCS A A a call if you have not received this tape. I hope everyone is getting Golf and the Environment from GCSAA. It is an excellent source of information that benefits all of us. Let's use all the sources of information we have and promote our profession as best we can. fft FOR SALE Toro Varitime II Central with 4 face plates. 36 complete satellites and 10 non-complete satellites. NOTE: We would like to hear from other Florida superintendents who have also received any of the GCSAA Specialist Certificates this year. The Green Sheet FTGA Conference FTGA Conference The45th Annual Florida Turfgrass Association Conference was held in Tampa September 5-7. Friday's fishing tournament and research golfing tournament raised over $ 11,000 with an additional $9,000 raised by the Toro Corn Boil that night. More than 300 FTGA members and supporters took part in the Com Boil and, as in past years, got the weekend off to a great start. Saturday's Award Luncheon again featured Florida superintendent chapters' annual donations to the FTGA Research Fund. Leading the list was Seven Rivers chapter which presented a $45,000 check from the proceeds of their Envirotron Tournament. Other superintendent chapters making Mike Swinson, left, Seven Rivers chapter president, is shown with donations were: Everglades Ronald Kitchner, Barbaron, presenting the $45,000 proceeds of the chapter - $4,000; Palm Beach 1997 Envirotron Tournament to Roy Bates, right, FTGA President. chapter - $6,000; Ridge chapter $2,500 and Treasure Coast chapter-$1,000. Charlie Campbell from DowElanco received the "Wreath of Grass" Award and David Barnes of Greg Norman Turf Company was elected president of the FTGA. After the luncheon, the Showroom floor opened with 200 exhibitors occupying 365 booths. The FGCSA booth included a continuous showing of the new superintendent public relations tape that has been sent to all FGCSA members. Also included in the Conference was a 3-day schedule of more than 25 workshops and educational sessions. November/December 1997 FLORIDA GCSA Marie Roberts shows the FGCSA Public Relations Tape to Craig Weyandt, Treasure Coast board member, at the FGCSA Booth 3 Educational Opportunities EDUCATION EDUCATION EDUCATION GCSAA Regional Seminars FTGA Seminars Two GCSAA Regional Seminars will be co-sponsored by local Florida chapters in the next few weeks. The first seminar will be a two-day event scheduled for November 20th and 21st sponsored by the Central Florida chapter in Orlando titled, "Managing People for Peak Performance and Job Satisfaction" and then on December 4th "Improving your Negotiating Skills" will be offered by the North Florida chapter in the Jacksonville area. The FTGA has announced their 1998 schedule of regional conferences. The all day conferences will be held in January and February in various areas in the state with plenty of Florida pesticide core and L&O CEU's and good education for all who attend. "Managing People for Peak Performance and Job Satisfaction" is a two day 1.4 CEUs interactive seminar that will introduce you to the principles, perspectives and skills you need to manage people, including yourself. The seminar, based on the GCSAA book, Human Resource Management for Golf Course Superintendents, will focus on commitment oriented management, leadership, motivation, communication, disciplines, performance evaluation, recruitment and training. The material in this seminar will also prepare participants to take section six of the GCSAA certification examination. The course is taught by Thomas Maloney, senior extension associate from Cornell University and Robert Milligan, Ph.D., agricultural economist, Cornell University. "Improving your Negotiating Skills" will be taught by Chuck Palmer, attorney, Troutman Sanders. Negotiation is a form of communication we encounter on different levels each day. This oneday seminar 0.7 CEU will improve your negotiating skills by discussing strategies, styles and techniques, and will give you the opportunity to practice the basic skills. Employment contracts, with emphasis on salary and raise negotiations, are specifically addressed. Both of these seminars stress the business management side of golf course maintenance rather than the hands on, day-to-day maintenance of the golf course itself which is the primary focus of the FTG A Conferences in the next article. These GCSAA seminars will illustrate the type of situations that often cause a superintendent to have a problem with his club members as well as those on the crew. The strategies learned in these seminars may someday save your job! For registration information, please contact the GCSAA Education Department at 1-800-472-7878. Support your local FGCSA chapter by attending the seminar your Board of Directors has scheduled for you. 4 SCHEDULE: January 13th Lake Worth January 14th Fort Myers January 15th Tampa January 23rd Sanford February 17 Jacksonville The FTGA has gathered speakers from professors at Auburn University, North Carolina State University, University of Georgia as well as our own University of Florida. Other speakers will come from Bayer Corporation, Terra, TruGreen Chem Lawn, United Horticultural Supply and other related turfgrass companies. Topics will include, but are not limited to, Coping with Regulations, Weed Control, Pesticides, Entomology, all with the goal of helping your crew maintain and grow healthy turf. Every seminar will not have the same group of speakers but the content of the seminars will be similar. See the FTGA brochure for the program in your area. For registration information and to receive a copy of the brochure, call the FTGA at 1-800-882-6721. The Green Sheet Dress Code GCSAA Publishes Dress Code If you are planning to attend any of the seminars on page four or are signed up for a GCSAA Seminar in Anaheim, please take the time to read the following. At their summer meeting, the GCSAA Board of Directors approved an education committee recommendation regarding a dress code for all GCSAA seminars, including conference seminars and chapter-hosted regional seminars. As you may recall, a dress code already exists for several conference events. The new seminar dress code is intended to help promote the professional image of golf course superintendents through professional attire. Accordingly, the new dress code for conference and chapter-hosted seminars is: "Casual business attire (slacks and collared shirts for men, similar attire for women); jackets are recommended." • Welcoming Reception: Semibusiness attire, such as an opencollared shirt with sport coat for men, and similar attire for women For your reference the dress code for other conference events follows: • Victory Reception and Banquet: Business attire such as suit with coat and tie for men, similar attire for women • Trade show and educational sessions: Golf casual attire • Opening Session and Environmental Session: sport coat and similar dress for women • Gala Reception and Dinner: Coat and tie • Golf Tournament/Golfing events: Golf casual attire, such as golf shirt or sweater and casual slacks, no jeans. & 1998 Poa Schedule Set Mike Mongoven, Everglades Chapter President, has announced the schedule for the 1998 Poa weekend at the Naples Beach Hotel.. Palm Beach chapter won this year's event by one stroke over the team from South Florida. Members of the winning team were Mark Henderson, Steve Bernard, Jack Callahan, Jeff Klontz and Glenn Landgraf. Joe Pantaleo and his South Florida team got a little satisfaction as they won low net honors and Joe won a spot on the state team in Anaheim by winning low gross honors with a hard fought 75. Winning second low gross was Buck Buckner in a match of cards with Roy MacDonald after both shot 767. Bob Harper won low net honors with a 69 and Bill Griffith finished second, Shot of the day was made by Marty Clark with a hole in one on #14. Congratulations! Also winning a spot on the state team was Mark Hopkins who qualified by having low average in two out of 3 of our events. Host superintendent, Bayne Caillavet, had everything in great shape for our second event and General Manager Denny Snyder and his staff made us all feel right at home with help in scoring and a great lunch. Hope to see more chapters participate next year. 6 Joe Pantaleo, right, winner of the Low Gross Category, is all smiles as he poses with the rest of his South Florida team (from left) Eric Knudsen, Ed Miller and Bob Harper. FGCSA Chapters Join with GCSAA in Planning for the Future Together Eight Florida superintendents joined the 106 representatives at the 1997 Chapter Delegates Meeting on September 5-7 at GCSAA headquarters. A brief outline of items discussed included: • The membership standards initiative was unanimously supported by the chapter delegates. Chapter delegates were asked to present the conqept of a membership standards initiative to their chapter members and ask for their commitment. A preliminary plan will be developed in 1998. • GCSAA invited management companies to headquarters to discuss the role of the golf course superintendent • Chapters interested in developing their own Web sites have the option of asking GCSAA to host their sites. Chapters would be responsible for the maintenancc fees and database development. • Education: GCSAA Regional Seminar rebate reimbursement program will be eliminated while the 20 paid participants will continue to be the minimum registration requirement. The Etonic Leadership program was reviewed. The FGCSA will participate in this program at the Poa seminar in May. The FGCSA will hold its own "Mini Chapter Relations Meeting" on Saturday, November 8th at Grenelefe Resort from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. GCSAA COO Joe O'Brien will facilitate this meeting which would probably include many of the items mentioned above plus all other items of concern to the long range planning of the FGCSA and its local chapters.
