Crowfoot Open Crowfoot Open Report The 21st Crowfoot Open began Saturday, August 2nd, with the FGCS A Board Meeting and Election of officers. Officers for the coming year are Joe Ondo - President, Mike Perham Vice President and Darren Davis, Secretary Treasurer. Next year the event will officially become the Larry Kamphaus Crowfoot Open in his memory and an award will be presented to an individual in our industry in his honor. The banquet this year was a Hawaiian themed pool party at the Grand Cypress Villas. Emcee and host, Tom Alex, prayed for no rain and handed out door prizes to all those who held a winning ticket. Tom also presented Vilma Kamphaus and her family with a special gift in Larry's memory. An 8:00 a.m. shotgun start was the order of business for 120 players on the New Course at Grand Cypress on Monday. Low gross superintendent this year is Chris Cartin who fired a fine 69 and won a spot on the state team in Anaheim, California, in 1998. Finishing second was Mark Hopkins and third was Buck Buckner. First place superintendent in the net points division was Ron Rood with Chad Sartain second and John Lammrish third. In the commercial division, first went to Ken Ezell with Dick Bessire second and J. R. Gall third. In the net points, first went to Kent Busser with Gary Ray second and Will Cassidy third. The team chapter championship came back to Central Florida chapter. Members of the winning team were Chad Sartain, Chris Cartin, Tom Diggens and John Lammrish. Tom Alex and his staff had the course in excellent shape and all the facilities at Grand Cypress were enjoyed by all who attended. Special thanks to Lisa McDowell and her parents, Bob and Jan Lloyd, for their help at the banquet and with registration. Jim Hagstrom, tournament coordinator at Grand Cypress with the scoring, and all the employees who helped. As usual, a special thanks go to all the Platinum sponsors, Diamond NEW FGCSA OFFICERS: and Gold sponsors for their continued support in making the Crowfoot Open the success it is. Another great job by Vilma Kamphaus President: Joe Ondo and the Crowfoot Committee on another successful event. It was hard this year to stay focused without Larry being there but his spirit was there and he will continue to be remembered and honored for all future "Larry Kamphaus Crowfoot Opens" to come. Thanks to all the participants and hope to see all of you next year. September/October 1997 Vice Pres.: Mike Perham Secretary/Treasurer: Darren Davis 3 Minutes of FGCSA Summer Board Meeting The Summer 1997 meeting of the FGCSA Board of Directors was called to order by President Dale Kuehner, CGCS, at 1:00p.m. on Saturday, August 2,1997, at the Grand Cypress Resort. All officers were in attendance. A roll call of chapters indicated that four chapters were unable to send a representative to this meeting. Coastal Plains. North Florida. Ridge and SuPCQast chapters were not represented. Other FGCSA members attending the meeting were Past President Mark Jarrell, Florida Green editor Joel Jackson, Committee Chairmen Mike Mongoven and Steve Pearson, FTGA President Roy Bates, Buddy Keene from Gainesvilee CC, Craig Weyandt from Stuart Y&CC and FGCSA lobbyist Mike Goldie. Golf Agronomics Donates Another $6,000 to Turfgrass Research Dale Kuehner announced that Golf Agronomics representatives Dale Mitchell and Richard Colyer had presented a check in the amount of $6,000 to the FGCSA Research Fund as proceeds of their rebate program for the year. This check brings the total amount donated to the FGCSA through this program to over $30,000. Dale Kuehner thanked them for their generosity and continuing support to the Florida superintendents. The first order of business was to clarify that the By-Laws of the FGCSA call for a three year commitment to the Board by External Vice Presidents. Several chapters have not been able to keep this schedule and it has resulted in a situation where we have 5 new Externals coming on the Board at the same time. Chapters were requested to adhere to this three year policy. SECRETARY/TREASURER: Mike Perham reviewed the minutes of the Spring board meeting and the minutes were approved. Mike then reviewed the budget worksheet with attention being paid to a few items that needed clarification. The first item was the solicitation from the Florida Golf Alliance for seed money to establish an association for the golfing industry. Dale Kuehner explained that the group was looking for $2,000 from each of ten different golfing associations who would then be Founding Members of the Alliance. The function of the Alliance would be to unite these associations under one umbrella to provide a voice in the industry. Most of the other associations already committed to the group are widely known "high profile" associations such as the Club Managers Association, PGA, LPGA, and the FTGA. Additional funds to operate the association would be solicited from other "high ticket" associations, rather than individuals or individual golf clubs as the former Florida Golf Council tried to do. Even though Dale was willing to admit that he is a bit skeptical of the eventual worth of the association, he stated that we should try to support any association that promotes our issues. Dale made a motion that we send a representative to their organizational meeting with the $2,000 seed money. The motion was seconded by Gary Grigg and Geoff Coggan and approved. The final invoice for the 1996 Public Relations video was not received by the end of the last fiscal year so will have to be included in this years budget. We also have to allow an amount for postage to all golf courses in Florida, even those who do not have FGCSA superintendents. A discussion of a possible Web site during this fiscal year was put on hold for awhile and no funds were allotted. A version of a Benevolent Fund was discussed and it was decided to increase the awards and flowers line item to allow for flowers to be sent in the event of the death of a member of spouse of a member. External Vice Presidents would have the responsibility of calling the FGCS A office to report of any deaths in their respective chapters. The GCS AA Chapter Planning Session as discussed at the Poa Board Meeting was approved. It was decided to reserve November 7th and 8th for the Fall Board Meeting followed by an all day session on Saturday, the 8th. Marie Roberts was directed to contact Grenelefe Resort to make arrangements for meeting rooms and a block of rooms for External V.P.'s for Friday night. It was decided that the FGCSA would cover the expense of the meeting room and meals for Friday night and Saturday and that the local chapters would cover transportation and the room charge for their External and any other officer they may choose to send. In order to allow for the above items to be included in the budget, Mike polled the chapter Externals for a commitment to the budget. Everglades committed $6,000; South Floridacommitted$2,000; Palm Beach committed $1,500 and Central Florida chapter committed $2,400. Since four chapter Externals were missing from the meeting, it is assumed that more chapters would be making donations later in the fiscal year. A conservative $ 12,000 was included in the budget under chapter donations to allow for a balanced budget. South Florida also announced that they would be donating $12,000 from the proceeds of this years Expo to the Research Fund in support of Marcus Prevatte at the Fort Lauderdale site. AWARDS: Gary Grigg will be presented with the 1997 FGCSA Distinguished Service Award at a meeting of the Everglades GCS A in the near future. South Florida has already presented thenPresidents Award to Alan Weitzel at a July meeting and the Suncoast chapter is honoring Mack Baugh with the Presidents Award at an upcoming chapter meeting. FGCSA Summer Board Meeting Minutes PUBLICATIONS: Joel Jackson is the editor of the Green Sheet which will continue to be funded by Golf Ventures for this fiscal year. It is time for a call for articles for the Fall issue of the Florida Green. We need more input from superintendents. It was suggested that Mike Perham, as the new Publications Chairman, call a meeting of the Publications Committee before the next board meeting in November. EDUCATION: The educational seminar at the Poa was well attended and was well received by those superintendents participating. There are two GCSAA Regional Seminars planned for Florida in the next two months - one in Palm Beach in Augustand the second in Tampa in September. Both of these seminars have good pre-registration numbers. The North Florida chapter and the Central Florida chapters also have co-sponsored Regional Seminars coming up this winter. MEMBERSHIP: Dual enrollment verification process for new Class A, B and C members was reviewed. CROWFOOT: Joe Ondo reported that there are 124 players signed up for the New Course at Grand Cypress. Once again there are more commercial members than superintendents playing in the tournament. The Crowfoot Committee has decided to change the name of the Tournament to honor the memory of Larry Kamphaus. The Crowfoot Committee would also like to establish an annual award to be given out at the Crowfoot Awards Banquet to someone who has been involved in a local chapter. Details will be worked out before next year's event. GOLF: Joe Ondo reported that the FGCSA Golf Tournament will be held at Southern Dunes on Saturday, September 20th with a 1:00 p.m. start. Chapter teams will be made up of five members with the best four counting for championship. Individuals may also register for the tournament. The winner of the tournaments will receive a free entry into the GCSAA Annual Championship in California. Jim Torba has already qualified for the FGCSA Team by his win at the Poa in May. FTGA: FTGA President Roy Bates discussed the new programs that the FTGA has implemented in the past few months such as the billboards and public service announcements. He reported on the upcoming FTGA Conference and asked for support from all superintendents. The weekend begins with the GCSAA Regional Seminar "Lake and Aquatic Plant Management: on Thursday, September 4th, with Friday reserved for the fishing and golf tournaments and other elective turf tours planned for that day. That means that the annual barbeque will be held that night at Simmons Ranch. Saturday morning the Concurrent Educational Sessions run from 9:00 to noon at the Convention Center. The Show itself begins on Saturday immediately after the FTGA Annual Meeting at approximately 1:00 p.m. The Presidents Receptions will be held that night and then the Showroom opens again for a short day on Sunday from 9:00 - 3:00 p.m. The University of Florida Turf Coordinator search is winding down with the final candidate negotiating salary schedule with the U of F. They have asked for financial support from the FTGA and the FGCSA in helping to fund this position over and above the salary. The figure needed is still negotiable and Mark Jarrell will keep the Board aware of the course of events in the next few weeks. If the FGCSA is to help fund the position, the money would come from the FGCSA Research Fund, not the Operating Budget. Roy also mentioned the research that is being done at the Belle Glade Center, particularly in St. Augustine and Bermuda grasses. FUND RAISING: Steve Pearson reported that the tournament scheduled for the Falls had to be cancelled due to lack of participants. GOVERNMENT RELATIONS: Mike Goldie gave a final report on the 1997 Legislative Session. He discussed water issues, minimum flows and levels, water management districts, state land and CARL land inventory, and the tax issue on power driven farm equipment. He noted that there will be a lot of changes being made in the legislators this next election time because the eight year limit goes into effect this year. Look for lots of new faces in your district. He was asked about any upcoming changes to the Florida State Constitution but forecasted that many of these proposed changes will not be adopted. GCSAA: Dale spoke on the upcoming Chapter Relations Meeting in Kansas during the weekend of September 5 - 7 (the same time as the FTGA Conference) . Central Florida, Everglades, Palm Beach and South Florida have already signed up to go. Dale asked that all chapters send a delegate even if they are unable to get a volunteer from their own chapter. Call Dale and he will try to get a board member to attend to represent those chapters who have no one going. Dale and Gary Grigg then discussed the upcoming GCSAA elections. Dale will again serve as Voting Delegate with Kevin Downing continuing as Alternate. Candidates were discussed. NEW BUSINESS: A discussion was held on the possibility of allowing students into the FGCSA. This would require a By-Law change to add a classification and would be permitted only if the goal is to promote professionalism. It was decided to table this item till another board meeting. The GCSAA has requested that all volunteers for GCSAA comm ittees m ust be recommended by their local chapters. This screening process goes into effect immediately. The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 p.m. •sft FGCSA Activities Local Chapter Leaders Stay Busy Chapter Delegates Meeting The 1997 Chapter Delegates Meeting will be held September 5-7 at GCSAA headquarters in Lawrence, Kansas.
