NEWSLETTER OF THE FLORIDA GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS ASSOCIATION The Green Sheet is the official communications newsletter of the Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association. The purpose of the publication is to aid members with current, up-to-date, news-related items which can benefit the good of the Association. A special thanks must be given to Estech Fertilizer Co. for their advertising support to cover operating expenses. 1988 FLORIDA GOLF WEEK IS HERE! April 3rd through April 9th has been designated as FGCSA 1988 Florida Golf Week. THE BEST YET! The 59th International Golf Course Conference Breaks All Records Over $22,000 has been raised during the past two years through the efforts of dedicated superintendents who have held various fund raising events at their respective clubs. It is worthwhile to note that we are talking about approximately 50 superintendents at only 50 separate golf clubs! Can you imagine how much more money could be raised for research if more superintendents were willing to support Florida Golf Week? It is really a simple format. The golf club sponsors a closest to the pin contest, blind bogey tournament, putting contest, or whatever type of fund raising event you, the superintendent feels is appropriate for your particular golf club. The funds raised are then sent to the FGCSA for presentation to the Florida Turfgrass Association's FGCSA Endowment Fund which we initiated in 1987. So please get together with your club professional today to decide an appropriate date during Florida Golf Week to hold a fund raising event at your club. Remember, it is one of the only times that the individual golf member is able to contribute to turfgrass research. For posters and additional information or assistance, please call Joel Jackson, 1988 FGW Chairman, at (305) 828-3663, or the FGCSA office (305) 692-9349. • No, this is not your practice putting green, rather this is one of the more innovative equipment display booths. Note the detail of the aerified carpet complete with plugs. See page 4 for more details on the conference. President's Message The GCSAA conference and show at Houston, Texas was well attended by interested and concerned golf course superintendent's, club owners, commercial distributors, company representatives, club owners, commercial distributors, educators, and everyone else associated with the golf course turfgrass industry throughout the State of Florida. All agreed this conference and show was the best and largest to date with 13,000 + attending. Florida was well represented by superintendent's serving on GCSAA committees and as speakers on the educational program. The educational programs, the equipment and product display at the George Brown Convention Center was the largest to date and was first class. The educational seminars were excellent and well attended. The programs on southern turf management and environmental issues was most timely, interesting, and informative. We must become more involved with the associations controlling pesticides as we are vitally concerned with their safe usage. Strict regulations are here to stay and will become even more restrictive in the very near future, especially in Florida as rapid growth and development further taxes our natural resources, especially water resources. We must communicate these critical issues to our owners or club officials and strongly recommend that all safety procedures involved in the safe use of pesticides by law as implemented. Our industry as a whole has a good record of concerned involvement and compliancejwith all laws that effect our environr I kno\^ ¿erintendent's and club officials | e l y concerned with all ; they should be. FCCSA BOARD MEETING New Jacket, New Directory, OLD BLAKE The 1988 FGSA Board Meeting was held on Sunday, February 7, 1988, in the HyattRegency Hotel, Houston, Texas. President Dick Blake opened the meeting with a moment of silence for William Wagner, Otto Schmeisser, and Dr. G Horn. TAX EXEMPT STATUS: Joel Jackson reported that several chapters have not sent in their year end Financial Statements. Any chapter which does not comply with this regulation will be unable to use the FGCSA Tax Exempt number. GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS: Cecil Johnston gave a report on hazardous waste, governmental regulations, and water management. He noted that since there is no site for hazardous waste disposal in Florida, he will investigate the alternatives presently available. A discussion was held regarding the possibility of hiring someone to attend Water Management District meetings and other related environmental concern seminars. It was felt that this may be appropriate in the near future. FGCSA JACKET: The FGCSA has adopted a new light green blazer as the official FGCSA jacket. More details will be available. Dan Jones stated that the FLORIDA GREEN and the GREEN SHEET will be professionally screened by a journalism professor for a nominal fee. MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR: Marie Roberts reported that the 1988 Membership Directory has been mailed to FGCSA superintendents. It is up to the individual superintendent to inform the FGCSA office of any change in mailing address. EDUCATION COMMITTEE: Tom Mackanos reported on the USGA Turfgrass Information File at Michigan State. For $75.00 a year, an individual can call the File directly and receive a printout listing articles that are registered with the File on any particular turfgrass subject. FTGA CONFERENCE: It was suggested that the FTGA use an Evaluation Form similar to the GCSAA for all workshops and seminar speakers. It was noted that the workshop rooms are over-crowded but Mark Jarrell stated that this was due to cost factors. Don Kooyer stated that the North Florida chapter is lobbying to have the FTGA Conference moved to Jacksonville in the near future. RESEARCH: A discussion was held regarding USGA Greens versus non-USGA spec greens. The FTGA is expected to hold a seminar on this subject at the 1988 conference. The FTGA has awarded a grant to the University of Florida to study better quality Bermuda Grass/Bent Grass. They are also willing to fund short-term research projects and are seeking suggestions from any superintendent for this type of project. PUBLIC RELATIONS: The FGCSA will purchase a copy of the GCSAA cassette tape, "Golf at its Best" for use by local chapters. FUND RAISING: Joel Jackson is the Chairman of the 1988 Florida Golf Week Fund Raising Program. FTGA RESEARCH FOUNDATION: Bob Yount would welcome any opportunity to speak to any golf club or related group on any scale. GOLF: The FGCSA #1 team finished the GCSAA Golf Tournament in a tie with Carolina's. (See related article in this issue for details). MEMBERSHIP: THE FGCSA will waive any fees for the last three months of the fiscal year to any assistant superintendent whose superintendent is already a member of the FGCSA. CROWFOOT: The 1988 Crowfoot will be played on the new course at Grand Cypress sometime during the beginning of August. LONG RANGE PLANNING: Ray Hansen suggested that the scope and responsibilities of the FGCSA Executive Secretary be expanded to include local chapter activities such as typing and distribution of minutes and local newsletters. The Board agreed with the concept but decided that this was an Executive Committee decision. Texas A&M is releasing a new heat tolerant Bent Grass. They are in need of 550 square feet of green space for this project. If interested, please call Tom Burrows, Education Chairman. THE GCSAA is targeting their research towards safe chemical use rather than trying to solve regional problems. Ray Hansen noted that an individual can become a member of the GCSAA's Golden Key Club with $100 donation. Don Hearn, President of the GCSAA, thanked the FGCSA for our fund raising projects and was very appreciative of the $6,000 that we are presenting to the GCSAA Scholarship and Research Committee. Dan Jones presented him with a bound copy of the set of 1987 FLORIDA GREEN magazines and a framed picture of the latest FLORIDA GREEN cover depicting the Houston Conference. SEMINARS: Tom Burrows announced that the FGCSA will sponsor seminars at the POA Annual and the Crowfoot Open this year. There will be a Bent Grass, part II seminar sometime around the first week in September. BY-LAWS: As a result of our recent By-Law change, the annual meeting of the FGCSA will be held at the Crowfoot Open in August. The FGCSA will distribute crests embossed for Directors, Committee Chairmen, and Editors. The FGCSA will provide CGCS crests for all newly certified superintendents who purchase the new FGCSA jacket. Candidates are needed for the GCSAA Board from the state of Florida. We would like to have a representative on the GCSAA Board in time for the 1990 Conference and show in Orlando. DESK TOP PRINTING: Dan Jones suggested that the FGCSA look into purchasing a desk top printer to be used for the FLORIDA GREEN, GREEN SHEET and local chapter newsletters. (Editor was found peddling The Green Sheet in Houston) PRESIDENTS MESSAGE.. .Con't. from page 1 be realistic and consider FACTUAL INFORMATION even if a few facts spoil a good story. Always remember that people, even us golf course superintendent's and golfers are still a part of the environment and involved in the ecology of life. My evaluation of this years GCSAA conference and show is the same as our own Florida GCSA. Increased growth, progress, involvement and commitment by our members, PROFESSIONALISM. "More Florida superintendent's are becoming involved in both GCSAA and Florida GCSA and more want to be involved as we prepare for Orlando in 1990" Our Florida GCSA board meeting was well attended, very positive and productive. Just like the GCSAA our association grows more progressive and professional thanks to those concerned members who contribute their time and talents to the advancement of our goals towards improved standards for the entire golf and turfgrass industry and our profession. P.S. Yes, even the bus service at Houston was good. • DAVE OLIVER STRIKES AGAIN The Woodlands Inn, King wood Country Club, and Raveneaux Country Club hosted the 1988 GCSAA Men's and Women's Golf Championships in Houston, Texas. Conditions were not ideal as rain interrupted play the first day and cool temperatures greeted all golfers the second day to test their shotmaking skills. In the team competition, Florida's#1 team and Carolina's #1 team tied for low gross honors. Florida's #1 team was awarded the first Frank Lamphier annual trophy for low net team and Carolina's #1 team was awarded the low gross trophy. The Florida #1 team consisted of Fred Klauk, Glenn Klauk, Gary Smith, and Joe Ondo. Florida's #2 team won fourth low net. In individual competition, Dave Oliver won his second individual title shooting a pair of 73 to edge Fred Klauk and Michael Orren by two strokes. Other Florida superintendents who won prizes were Hal Hicks, 5th low net and Gary Smither, 7th low net in the Green Flight; Fred Klauk, 1st low gross, and Steve Wright, 6th low net in the Black Flight. In the long drive competition, Dave Oliver and Tim Hiers finished first and second to win a set of irons and a driver for their efforts. A special thank you goes to the South Texas GCSA for being great hosts and for a job well done. Joe Ondo • When Certified Knocks At Your Door For all of you interested in being a Certified Golf Course Superintendent, I . would like to give you some ideas of what to expect when your two attestors pay you a visit. This of course is part of the certification program and the attestors must be certified. You have the choice of which two superintendents will be making the visit. The GCSAA will give you and your attestors a question and answer sheet covering different aspects of your career. How long have you been a superintendent, previous work experience, schooling, your involvement with the local and national association, your present budget and other related areas. After these questions have been answered your next step is to have a walk through your maintenance building. This includes inspection of equipment, offices, fertilizer and pesticide storage, pump stations and controllers. After this was completed I had two electric carts ready to go for the golf course visit. We went hole by hole to look at greens, tees, fairways, roughs, sand traps, etc. We also looked at the clubhouse area and nursery. I found this to be a very rewarding experience. You are in the company of two highly respected Certified Golf Course Superintendents and many topics are covered. We exchanged ideas of different turf grasses, chemical usage, fertilizer, heights of cut, shade problems, drainage, different types of mowing procedures, equipment and much more. You can expect the visit to last around two hours. I felt we all had constructive ideas to contribute to each other. This visit can be conducted before or after your written test. Your next step is to compile all your study material and notify GCSAA three weeks in advance of the test date. The attestors gave me a great deal of encouragement and suggested I should not be upset or discouraged if all the sections were not passed. Many of the applicants did not make it on their first attempt. After my attestors left, I sat down in my office and had a good feeling deep down inside of what I am trying to accomplish. It made me proud to be a golf course superintendent and to be associated with such fine gentlemen. Thank you Richard Blake and Glen Klauk. Well, it's time to hit the books! Kenneth T. Andersen Superintendent Broken Sound Golf Club P.S. Congratulations Ken! Since writing this article, Ken has just become certified. • WALT: Florida's 1st Eight Florida superintendents became certified during 1987. Yount, VP of Development Florida Turfgrass Research Foundation • USGA® In Memory; UPCOMING EVENTS GREEN SECTION CONFERENCE Bill Wagner Otto Schmeisser In cooperation with the Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association and the Florida State Golf Association We lost two great individuals in the turf industry just recently: Otto Schmeisser, golf course superintendent at the Everglades Country Club in Palm Beach passed away on January 26th 1988. so fitting for that Tuesday to ironically be the day of the month for the Palm Beach Chapter Golf Course Superintendent Association meeting Otto was the son of the famous Hans Schmeisser, a leader in our turf industry, for which the Hans Schmeisser Scholarship Award is presented annually at the FTGA conference in Tampa, for a turf grass student at Lake City C.C. Otto was the superintendent at the Everglades Country Club for the past ten years where upon he was also the superintendent for ten years respectively at both the Indian Creek Golf Club in Miami Beach and the Gulf Stream Country Club in Delray Beach. Otto is survived by his wife Trudy and four daughters Chris, Katie, Karen and Kim. He will be missed by all of us. On another sad note we also lost another great leader in our industry, Bill Wagner. Bill had fought a long hard bout with cancer and passed away on Friday, January 29 1988. Bill had been the Golf Course Superintendent for Tequesta Country Club for the past 27 years, the Past President of the Florida Golf Course Superintendent's Association, and Past President of the Florida Turf Grass Association. Bill was the kind of fellow when you would walk up to say, "hello, how are you" he would always smile and respond, "just fine, how are you". Even if he was in great pain, he always turned the topic over and talked about the more positive things in life. As a member of our family's church in Tequesta, I remember Bill coming to our house on a social call one afternoon, because our father had just been in the hospital. (We did not even know him as a golf course superintendent but rather as a friend in the community.) Ironically, my brother David, later on worked for Bill part time on weekends changing cups, before he pursued a golf course career along with myself. Now as we look back 15 years, we remember him as both a leader in the turf industry and a leader in the community as well. Bill is survived by his wife Joan and two daughters, Susan Early and Peggy Wagner. A great loss to our community and we are saddened.
