VOLUME XIV, PART 6, NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 1998 NEWSLETTER OF THE FLORIDA GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS ASSOCIATION For his continuous service to the FGCSA, 1987 Past President Scott Bell (right) receives the 1998 FGCSA Distinguished Service Award from current President Michael Perham, CGCS, at the Treasure Coast chapter's September meeting. Scott is the superintendent at Bent Pine GC in Vero Beach and currently serves as Assistant Editor of the Florida Green. Also representing Florida were Jeffrey Brown (Ridge GCSA), Randall Bushway (Palm Beach GCSA), Thomas Crawford (Suncoast GCSA), Wayne Estey Jr., CGCS (Treasure Coast GCSA), Jim Goins (South Florida GCSA), John Lammrish (Central Florida GCSA), and Dale Walters, CGCS (Everglades GCSA). It should be noted that, after the year 2000, failure by a chapter to send a representative to the Chapter Delegates meeting for two consecutive years would result in the loss of that chapter's right to vote by delegate in the annual GCSAA election. Meeting highlights included a 44meet the candidates" section which served notice that the field of candidates is very strong this year. There are six superintendents running for the office of director. They are David Downing II, CGCS (South Carolina), Joseph Emmanuel, CGCS (Kentucky), James Nicol, CGCS (Minnesota), Timothy O'Neill, CGCS (Connecticut), Samuel Snyder VII, CGCS (Delaware), and Mark Woodward, CGCS (Arizona). "This is without a doubt the strongest field of candidates that we have had run for the board in my tenure as a voting delegate," stated Kuehner. All Florida chapters have been sent a Voting Delegate Statement which must be returned to the GCSAA office by November 1 st in order for your chapter to vote in the February election. If you have any questions on this form, please call Dale Kuehner. An impressive association update was given by Steve Mona which outlined GCSAA's current strategic initiatives as image, environment, chapter and career opportunities. Some of the programs described by various GCSAA staff included the First Tee Program which provides economically disadvantaged youth with the opportunity to play golf; the Environmental Stewards Award Program; and the GCSAA Membership Standards Initiative. The goal of this particular initiative is to increase the value of the superintendent in the eyes of the employer and influential golfer, increase compensation, job security recognition, and job opportunities. Again this year, those representatives who had never been to the GCSAA headquarters came away with a feeling of renewed respect for their national association. The Green Sheet Director of Communications Report What's Up D.O.C. by Joel Jackson 1. Government Relations. A. Pesticide Review Council: The meeting in Immokalee on September 11th was interesting in a couple of ways. Dr. Keith Solomon gave a talk on using probability models to evaluate risk in pesticide use. Larry Hammond of Dow AgroSciences gave the group a presentation on all the testing and results found in the re-registration of 2-4,D. It is the largest selling herbicide in the world and 3rd largest in the USA. No relationships to cancer were found in yet another round of animal testing. In humans, the compound and metabolites are expelled from the body within 10 to 36 hours. Surface water is the hot button issue and the St. Lucie basin will be scrutinized heavily. Using data from the Dade County experience, regulators hope to set up a working model for investigating and solving point source pollution that can be applied generally for creating BMP's and solving problems in all basins. B. FQPA: Attended another FQPA Working Group meeting on September 24th. A subcommittee will look at creation of a data collection format that will protect confidentiality, but will also provide use data for future assessments which are sure to come under FQPA. Golf and urban use data will not be collected at the present time since EPA is focusing only on food crops right now, but we need to face fact we may need to provide factual basis for claims of low risk and exposure in golf applications. Group called for associations to endorse FQPA mission statement and letters to Congress in support of LaHood House Resolution 290 calling for EPA to abide by implementation guidelines in the Act. And this just in from IFAS: EPA's current "best effort" at evaluating aggregate and cumulative exposures from forty organophophate pesticides indicates that even by themselves, several of these chemicals overflow the available "risk cup" by factors of ten to 50. When these exposures are cumulated for the entire class of chemicals, the Agency's current working data produce anexposure estimate that appears November/December 1998 to be more than 100 times higher than allowed under the Food Quality Protection Act's health-basd standard for pesticide regulation. (Editors Note: All the more reason you need to be heard stating your concerns about the methods and science that EPA is using in making these determinations!) (2) On October 15th Joe Ondo and I also went to Gainesville to partcipate in an industry wide working group with the Dept of Horticulture Review Committee. The object is for commodity groups to provide input on the responsiveness of the Dept's education and research to the needs of the various groups it serves. C. Florida Golf Alliance (FGA): 2. Chapter Relations: Covered (1) the Distinguished Service Award and Presidents Award presentations at the Treasure Coast Pro/Supt event on September 1st; (2) the West Coast Bud Quandt Torunament on October 12th; (3) spoke at the North Florida Chapter meeting on October 13th; and (4) Florida GCSA Golf Championship on October 17th. The Officers of the FGA elected yours truly as the Secretary for the FGA. Former Secretary Ann Palmer of the LPGA Sprint Titleholders resigned to take a job out of state. The FGA is supporting a total golf economic impact study being conducted by two professors at Florida State University. Letters of invitation to join the FGA are being sent to all organized golf associations in the state. 3. Allied Associations. 4. Media Relations: A. FTGA: There was a great turnout at the Greg Norman Turf Research Tournament at the Medalist Club in Hobe Sound. David Barnes announced that $8,000 was raised. Maybe we can get a few more celebrities involved in fund raising. The attendance at the Conference and Show in Tampa was up over last year which was a goal, but certainly there was room for more to come and participate. Next year turf professionals from all industries will have a unique opportunity to see the Envirotron and Turf Research plots in action as the Conference and Show moves the the campus of the University of Florida. The trade show wil be held in the O'Connell Center and very affordable hotels are located nearby. FTGA and FGCSA held a joint Board Meeting October 23rd. B. IFAS: (1) Joe Ondo, Cary Lewis and I attended a joint meeting on September 2nd with the FTGA Board and Deans Waddill and Jones f r o m IFAS. We discussed the Turf Coordinator's role and the university's suport for that role. We left feeling assured that the administration is on the same page with us at last. Now we trust, but verify subsequent actions. The FTGA is mandated to provide a plan or goals so progress and accomplishments can be measured. (1) Sent news releases: to the St. Pete Times on the West Coast Bud Quandt Turf Research Tournament; to the Vero Beach Press Journal on the Distinguished Service Award to Scott Bell and President's Award to Jim Callaghan of Treasure Coast; to the Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald on the South Florida Missing and Exploited Children tournament; and to the whole network on the GCSAA Regional Seminar on Wetlands. (2) Added thirteen new contacts to the golf media network. Watch Your Mailbox The 1998-1999 FGCSA Membership Directory is currently on its way to all members. Please check your listing to be sure it is correct. The 1999 FGCSA Survey is also in production and should be sent to all Class A and B superintendents by the end of November. Please take the time to complete the survey and return it to the office as soon as possible. The survey is only useful if as many members as possible are included. 3 Local Chapter Sponsors Successful Charity Tournament 35th Annual Bud Quandt Research & Benefit Tournament Pasadena Yacht & Country Club, St. Petersburg 35th Annual Bud Quandt Tournament Committee Members These great events don't happen without time and effort on the part of volunteers. The event raised $13,000 this year for the Center. Mike Christiansen, Director for the National Center wrote a letter to GCSAA President George Renault praising the South Florida Chapter for their steadfast support for the past 14 years, "These guys work ceaselessly and get very little recognition for the good works that they have done. Their golf tournaments and silent auctions over the years have netted our organization well over $100,000, and they have earned the undying gratitude of the National Center. . . They are tremendous ambassadors for your organization and they bring honor to it." Singled out by Christiansen for special praise were: Bill Entwistle, Sr., the "founding father" of the event; Bill Entwistle, Jr., Flamingo Lakes GC; Bob Klitz, CGCS, Orangebrook GC; Dale Kuehner, CGCS, Colony West CC; Bill McKee, Oak Tree CC; and Bryan Singleton, Riviera CC. The South Florida GCSA is proud of the hard work and dedication that these members have given in support of this tournament. The team from Miami National GC led by superintendent Bob Burns won the low gross division with a match of cards at the score of 59. Bob's teamates were Ramon Perez, Chris Schmidt and Paul Blockens. The team of Paul Thompson, Mike Tchebanoff, Mark Owen, and Brian Moldehauer took low net honors also in a match of cards at a score of 61. The Tournament Committee wants to give special thanks to all the Eagle and Birdie sponors, Rayside Truck & Trailer and Eagle One Golf and all the prize donors. FGCSA Golf Championship Jim Torba, superintendent at the University of South Florida Golf Course, was low gross winner of the 1998 FGCSA Golf Championship. With the win, Jim joins Mark Hopkins, Chris Cartin and Buck Buckner on the FGCSA team for the 1999 GCSAA Golf Tournament in Tampa. The Westin Innisbrook Resort is the headquarters hotel for this event. The team from West Coast GCSA won the chapter division by edging out Treasure Coast by one shot. The West Coast team consisted of Cary Lewis, Jim Torba, Mike Wisher and Duane VanEtten. Other chapters entering the team division were South Florida, Palm Beach, Central Florida and the Ridge. Joe Ondo, Chairman of the Golf Championship, wishes to thank Bayne Caillavet and his staff at Southern Dunes GC for again hosting this event. Joe Ondo is also Golf Chairman for the FGCSA and is hoping to get several other local golfers to join together so that Florida may have a great representation in this year's tournament. Please let Joe know if you are planning on playing in the tournament and he will do some pairing up to be sure that a Florida team wins the event this year! Greg Norman Turfgrass Research Tournament Left to right. Greg Norman presents the 1st place prize to Joe Ondo, CGCS at the Medalist GC in Hobe Sound. Norman sponsored the August 31st event at his club to help raise funds for turfgrass research. David Barnes of the FTGA, who works with Norman, reported the event netted around $8,000. 5 FTGA Conference and Show Highlights 46th Annual FTGA Conference and Show Highlights Tim Hiers, CGCS, Wins FTGA's Wreath of Grass Left to right: FTGA President David Barnes presents Colliers Reserve superintendent Tim Hiers, CGCS with the highest honor of the Florida Turfgrass Association, the FTGA Wreath of Grass Award. Hiers, superintendent at Colliers Reserve in Naples and Past President of the FGCSA, was commended for leading the industry in environmental awareness and sharing the benefits of responsible turf management with the general public. Bonita Bay East superintendent, Matt Taylor (right) introduced Hiers and outlined some of his contributions to the industry. The 46th Annual Florida Turfgrass Association Conference was held in Tampa September 16th through the 19th. The opportunities for education, sales and entertainment were endless. On the Showroom floor the Sale of the Century, raffles and even a free lunch helped to bring in many attendees to see what the exhibitors had to offer. The entertainment started on Wednesday night at the Caribbean Cookout at the Radisson's Riverwalk and continued through Friday evening's Gala and casino night. For those who really wanted to finish off the weekend in great style, there was a choice of the golf tournament, the fishing tournament or the Busch Gardens tour on Saturday. The Awards dinner Friday night started with the presentation of the FTGA scholarship recipients which included five students from Lake City Community College and one from the University of Florida. Then Tim Hiers was announced as the winner of the prestigious Wreath of Grass award which was presented by his friend, Matt Taylor. Scott Wahlin, superintendent at Harbourside GC in Longboat Key, was inducted as the new FTGA President. FGCSA members played a big part in the FTGA Conference Educational Sessions. Friday morning was all FGCSA! Fred Klauk and Tom Alex gave a presentation on course preparations for major professional golf events in the Innovative Superintendent Session I. Cary Lewis, CGCS; Prentis Knotts, CGCS; and Steve Pearson, CGCS were featured in Innovative Superintendents Session II on topics ranging from employee training and performance evaluation to wildlife management. Superintendents Matt Taylor and Rick Tatum teamed up with USGA's John Foy to discuss the new varieties of ultradwarf bermudagrasses to a standing room only audience. 6 FGCSA Vice President Darren Davis was part of two Concurrent Session presentations — one on Golf Courses and Wetlands with Steve Beeman and the other on Turf Maintenance Facilities with fellow superintendent Matt Taylor. The Green Sheet GCSAA Conference and Show 1999 FGCSA Reception The FGCSA will hold its 1999 reception on Friday night, February 12th, at the Omni Rosen Hotel in Orlando from 8:00 -11:00 p.m. Due to the tremendous number of people who attended our last Orlando reception in 1996, we will be taking steps to ensure that there will be ample room for all those who attend. Invitations will be mailed to all FGCSA members in January. Sponsors have been solicited and we have already received a wonderful early response from our loyal affiliates. However, there is still time for any affiliates to be involved as a sponsor. Please call the FGCSA office if you have not been contacted to join with the Florida superintendents for this annual event. Entertainment has been booked and we again promise an evening that you will not forget.
